  1. A side effect of the lack of resistance is that Magic Water and the Magic Shield Staff are both useful to have around. 7 Resistance (degrading by 1 per turn) is very useful to have around in a game where Mages also don't gain Strength/Magic outside of promotion (except Wendel apparently, which I guess is another reason that he's a badass.)
  2. I really like how, for a first playthrough especially, FE5 has felt challenging without feeling like being thrown into a giant brick wall. The enemies that you encounter in this game really are scrubs so far (up to Chapter 6), but the scenarios that you're given and the restrictions that are placed on you with funds and dismounting and such make things tough. The result is that it makes maps feel approachable at first, until you realize what the "catch" is. Chapter 5 was a good example for me. There aren't many enemies in this chapter that hit especially hard on their own, but then you play on and the length of going around the arena starts to take its toll. This was the chapter that I found that a lot of the weapons I had been carrying through Chapters 4 and 4x were starting get dangerously low in durability, and I had to make hard choices about whether I wanted a unit I saw with potential to reach that next level up, or maybe use someone who I'd used a lot a little more instead. Rewjeo called FE5's difficulty "a bunch of smaller [aspects] coming together", and that's what I've felt from the game so far (and I'm not even at the point of the game where Fatigue and character choice is a factor yet). Honestly, the thing about FE5s gameplay that bothers me the most is the stat stuff that's hidden from you. I've found myself referencing the Thracia page on the site more than I did for any other FE thanks to things like supports and especially the PCC. Supports at least can be figured out kinda sorta if you understand the concept (although some would have thrown me off, like the one-way nature of many supports), but the PCC is something that seems really hard to figure out if you don't know about it already but can have a major impact on who you use. If this game were ever remade, I'd prefer that things like this be presented in a better way to the player, and in the case of PCC, possibly rebalanced.
  3. Huh, I didn't know the FE4 patch was that old. I got into the fandom between 7 and 8 (but oddly enough not due to Smash, I didn't even have Gamecube game access until I got my Wii back in '07, it was ads and stuff from Nintendo leaflets and game magazines that got me interested). I suppose that if Marth and Roy were in Melee in this hypothetical world (odd to think of since their inclusion in Smash obviously turned people towards the series in the first place), then FE6 might get translated. Marth's tale would probably get translated in FE3 since it had both stories. Related question: When was the FE6 patch first released? The readme says that it current form was a few years after FE6 and 7 came out, but I have memories of someone at my school playing a GBA FE game in English before FE7 came out. Were any early versions of it released during that timeframe, or am I remembering wrong?
  4. Oh of course not. At this point, ZSNES is pretty much my emulator for last resort situations, which very rarely happens.
  5. Oldish but I just got back to FE5 and am playing through Chapter 6 now so I couldn't help but notice. If you mean the conversation concerning Mareeta, I was able to trigger that just fine. Does this mean I'm using an "out of date" patch? (in quotes because I know that even the freshest FE5 patches aren't the sexiest things in the world). Maybe it's due to playing on SNES9x instead of ZSNES?
  6. I'm really shocked by the small number of people that recommended Blazing Sword as a good FE. But I suppose it's because the OP has already played an FE game. Regardless, I truly feel that Blazing Sword is the best game to get a newb acquainted with the series. It's a decent flatline in terms of gameplay and character interactions, doing those in a solid, but non-gimmicky/unique way. The difficulty of normal mode is usually seen as challenging but not crazy hard for the newcomer, especially with the tutorial portion of the game which, while annoying for veterans who want to redo Lyn's story on normal, is great at introducing newcomers to basic mechanics and skills that will help them for the rest of the game and set them up for other games in the series. It's also a solid introduction of the Support system, which represents the character interaction side of the series that's well loved. The only potential downside as a "Fire Emblem 101" game is the story which is pretty unique compared to what other FE games offer, having a conflict that's plays out differently from the usual "Prince taking back his homeland from evil" plot that many FE games have.
  7. As a person whose only been a part of 2 drafts (one for FE7, one for FE8, and neither was on Serenes), I'm actually really surprised that Save state abuse for solid runs is not only an allowed tactic, but one that's used often enough that you almost have to do it to stay competitive. As much as I enjoy the extra strategy and McGavering that Draft Runs can bring into the games, I still appreciate that luck element that can throw off your plans and make you have to think of something new on the fly. I'm not sure if coming up with a perfect plan before hand and then using the RNG and savestates to make it so would be nearly as fun to me. Of course, I'm a person who only comes back to Fire Emblem once a year or two, so that may have something to do with it as well.
  8. For the record, most of the more recent Megaten games have also had selectable difficulty modes, so I think there's a good chance that that will be in this game. It'd never happen...but it'd be so cool if it did.
  9. The PSX fantranslation of Tales of Phantasia is worth a look. It's the best version of the game that's in the English language, imo.
  10. I'm not sure how much effort it would take from you, but you could always do a fan-style patch with the fan localized names (Sheeda) and an official style patch with the European localized style (Shiida). I guess you could even do an American style patch too if you wish. Then again, I've had VERY little experience messing with roms and patching, so I'm not sure how viable that is for this game.
  11. Tempting...tempting...but I'm sure to make foolish mistakes. Unless it does seem to be too easy. I'm streaming my exploits now if you care, and I'll write up as chapters go by. Well so far, I just finished Chapter 3 and already lost Kain and Gordon. Kain got overwhelmed by a few of the pirates on chapter 1, and Gordon got criticaled by the Chapter 3 boss. I'm especially disappointed about losing Gordon. Between Bows being lighter in FE1 than in FE3, and that kickass Bowgun, it was looking like I'd actually have a chance to build him up. Made even worse since Kashim can't even promote in this game (not like the promotion gains to Horseman were particuarlly good, but it's something, and I REALLY wanted to promote a Sniper this time). Ah well, next time I play I get a mage. That makes everything better.
  12. I feel like playing Fire Emblem, and endurance runs are interesting, so lets do something almost masochistic and play through Fire Emblem 1 blind-ish.
  13. Barrylocke is trying a draft elsewhere

  14. Gotta say I love this game, even though I'm not the best at it. I'm stuck in BF 17, stubbornly trying to use Nietzsche and Roswell. I feel like Nietzche has the potential to be great, if only she can get a few more little stars, but unfortunately I didn't use her as much as I probably should have for her to get MVP's and such.
  15. I'm interested in hearing how they'll redo the Dark Emperor song.
  16. But being in a language that I can understand doesn't HURT the game any either, you know ;)
  17. And now I made it to chapter 16. Is it really as hard as I hear? Camus looks like he could be a tough boss to handle (for once) but Im sure I can manage him. Also, should I start going wild with Chiki's power, or conserve for a little bit? How fast can I expect those Dragonstone charges to run out?
  18. This, especially the last two. Dark Knights awesome too though.
  19. Oops. I had went under the thought that I probably wasnt even going to 10/20 most of my characters, so it'd be ok to promote them asap. but Kashim gained 4 levels in 3 chapters (promoted him at the end of chapter 10), so I guess I could have gotten more levels out of him... Is Est worth training up? I know her Miracle Sword+Star Orb helps alot, but is it still worth the time?
  20. Yeah, I certainly find him to be good...I just wish he had more speed than he does. (8 at level 10/5, only Marich ties with him as the lowest speed in the active party)
  21. That's true, but she also has more defense than all of my other active party units (except the recently promoted Navarre) which I guess isn't so important if you have low hp like she does. Ah well, I like her, and she's been good to me. And yeah, I never expect bow units to be AMAZING, but I usually have one in the active party. I loved my Sue in FE6. And I was expecting him to have issues with weapon level. Kashim may be the person that gets my manual, since the other people Im thinking about giving Royal Weapons to have the Weapon Level to support it. Everytime I start a playthrough, I always try to give Gordon his shot...but between his horrible speed and low movement, I just ditch him :/ Why do people uaually prefer Marich to Linda? Linda's been about on par with Marich (better speed/skill/luck, but she's frailer with less hp and defense) Is it just because he joins earlier? One more chapter and I finally get to use Chiki. I've been doing ok overall, but last chapter I wound up having to use a Warp staff to save someone that was in danger...but the enemy was only ONE space out of range of the closest unit EDIT: Oh, that location guide says that I get another in the chapter that I'm in. I don't feel so bad now.
  22. Thanks for the help, Im definitely enjoying my shiny new heros. And wow...Kashim really doesnt get much for promotion, and he's been pretty slow (he can still only double with iron bows, his str is really high and his skill is nice too though...) When do I get my first dragon whip? Because Sheeda and Katua are also at level 9, and ready to promote soon. (At Chapter 14 btw) ...And on a slightly unrelated note, is it just me, or do those 2 blow Kain and Abel out of the water?
  23. Well I made it to Chapter 10 in Book 1, and its getting close to promotion time for Oguma (2 levels to go) I know that in FE3, all stats but hp cap at 20. So would it be to my advantage to just promote asap, or should I at least get a couple more levels in before then. Since I barely use the arena (kinda scared of it in this game to be honest :/) how likely is it for characters to hit level 20 at this point, the midway spot? I know the next chapter has a knight proof that I'll probalby give to abel, so this question will apply to more than oguma soon. Also, how many mage promotion items are there in book 1? I'd like to promote marich and linda, and drop rena or wendel when one of those two promote (yes, Im using all 4 at the moment).
  24. I really enjoy this game, it's got a fair amount of difficulty at some points, and the story's interesting.
  25. Squirtle, Totodile, Treecko, Piplup. I know the whole fire being the preferred choice because they arent so common early on thing, but Water's always been my favorite type, and Totodile's actually my favorite pokemon period.
