  1. People act like Square does nothing with Xenogears even though they still make merchandise, include it in their mobile games, and still sell it. These uses aren't Nintendo-adjacent so Xenoblade fans tend not to notice. Meanwhile, Namco does nothing with Xenosaga outside of letting Monolith use KOS-MOS whenever they want.

My look into the franchise this thread loves so much has led me to this:

I'm not sure if I want to know the context. Still, we must show bobs:

So the Smash wannabe already has a character banned from tournament play. Amazing balance right there.

For some reason, I first read this as Sora being banned from tournaments before he was even released. I know he can cut through buildings but that would be silly.

    Who is it?

Asking because I'd be more convinced if Toph was that broken.

Toph is the game's Little Mac, of course she isn't broken.

  3. Hmm, I'm sure the Trails series doesn't have too many games to make sense of--

    Trails-Series-Timeline-RPGFan-v2-1093x15

How many games is that again? How many games are part of the main plot? Why do they have different names? Which game has the cutest girls? So many questions...

No I'm not playing any of them, this was a joke.

  4. Metroid Dread is finished with a time of 6:47:44 and 37% of items. I can't wait for the next mission to release in 19 years!

    Spoiler

Samus has now turned into Master Chief. I'm surprised by the developers' restraint, there's no Ridley or Metroid cloning program or anything (I guess Kraid made up for that). Though Samus is a Metroid now, so the series's title still makes sense. Is this what they meant when they said the game would conclude the relationship of Samus and the Metroids? "No Samus, you are the Metroids."

It turns out the Zebes Chozo were also Thoha, and we learn that Raven Beak is one of Samus's gene donors. Which leads to another Doom Slayer comparison (Doom Eternal DLC spoilers):

Raven Beak: Tell me...have you nothing to say to your creator...before you strike him down?

    Samus: No.

While it's interesting that Raven Beak was Samus's mission control the entire time, its mildly disappointing that the real Adam only had two or three lines the entire game.

But I'm wondering, what's up with the Chozo Archives? Are they tied to completion percentage like the Chozo Memories were? I got two of the ending images but none of the archives.

the character development is cut in exchange for… the girls wearing literally nothing instead of towels for some reason

Wearing towels inside a hot spring seems counterproductive. Aren't people supposed to use them to dry themselves afterwards? They might as well just go in fully clothed.

(While I know it's to preserve the characters' modesty, they should be wearing swimsuits if anything.)

mfw I join a small discord server, and one of the rules is "No homophilia". Which is quite a large oof, I think. Unless I misunderstand the rule.

I misread this as "No hemophilia" and wondered what they had against people whose blood can't clot properly.

  6. I'm pretty sure I'm at the endgame of Dread at this point, since I defeated the last E.M.M.I. and have what is presumably the last power up, but I'll probably finish it tomorrow. Though based on the bosses I've fought so far, I suspect beating the game might take all day. Dread lived up to Fusion's example in that respect.

    Spoiler

I enjoyed the E.M.M.I. chases so I was a bit disappointed that the last one went down in a cutscene, even if it shows how powerful Samus has become. Though the purple E.M.M.I. could hear you from anywhere so I suppose the developers couldn't top that.

The hardest boss in Dread is still easier than Diggernaught.

I've observed that Dread's bosses are more manageable once you've memorized and learned to evade their attack patterns, especially since the Flash Shift makes dodging easier. You'll usually die a lot before you memorize the pattern though. The Diggernaught's final phase is partially luck based which is why fighting it is particularly difficult.

  7. When you're minding your own business and a Chad walks into the room:

I'd also like to formally apologize to Quiet Robe for thinking he would be a villain. Some comments on the plot/gameplay of Dread after getting the Plasma Beam:

    Spoiler

I like how Quiet Robe contextualized the Chozo Memories from Samus Returns, how Raven Beak betrayed the Thoha because he wanted to weaponize the Metroids. So we know of at least three Chozo tribes: the one on Zebes that raised Samus and created Mother Brain, the Thoha of SR388 who created the Metroids, and the Mawkin warriors of ZDR. There are probably more in the Prime games, but I haven't played those. And Samus talks! In Chozo, but still.

Somehow I didn't expect the X to show up personally in this game, even though this is obviously a sequel to Fusion and Quiet Robe mentioned that ZDR previously had an X infestation. I assumed it was too late in the game to reintroduce them, and I would guess I'm around halfway through the game at this point. Maybe Raven Beak removed the X DNA from her at the beginning of the game and is going to clone all of the Fusion bosses (or at least Ridley), because you can never fight Nightmare enough times.

It was nice fighting Kraid again, but the game is going to explain what he was doing here, right? He can't be an X mimic because there were none of them on Zebes, and he would've been imprisoned in Elun in that case. I assumed Adam would say something like "Hey didn't you blow up that big lizard already?" but he didn't.

Speaking of which, this is a rare case where the Plasma Beam is obtained before the Wave Beam, just like in Fusion. I wonder how similar the final version of Dread is to the Dread that was meant to release on the DS, and if anything changed in the meantime. I think the Diffusion Beam was previously in Other M, so maybe it was originally created for Dread but was used in Other M first.

  8. Nevermind, you do have to go through Cataris at this point. I just wasn't looking hard enough.

The Phantom Cloak makes avoiding the E.M.M.I. easier, though the green one has a tendency to waltz into Samus and kill her even with the invisibility. And what does a bounty hunter have to do to get a Morph Ball on this planet? It seems the developers are holding out on it for longer than usual.

  9. Dread Suit Samus for next Smash Bros.? Though personally I might prefer the Samus Returns design as the default with the Dread Suit as an alternate costume.

I like how much more cinematic Dread is than the previous games. I've gotten lost a few times already, it being a completely new game and all, but I still found a way to beat the first boss. I reached Cataris, but something tells me I shouldn't be here until I get the Varia Suit. Though I'm sure a speedrunner will eventually find a way to not need it. I'll go back to Artaria and see if there are any other places I haven't visited yet.

  10. The E.M.M.I. spirit battle in Smash Ultimate

I'll pick up Dread later today, so then I can be terrified of the E.M.M.I. in their home series and in Smash! Speaking of which, I wonder if we'll get more spirit events after Sora releases or if the Spirits of Dread will be the last one.

  11. As an aside to Sora, I'm glad Doomguy's Mii costume managed to sneak in at the last minute. Now he's finally united with his friend Isabelle! Sakurai even acknowledged how Doom can be played on basically anything with a screen. The Slayer's costume might be the first one I buy. It's a shame that he was the only full costume in this wave though (and Splatoon has plenty of Mii costumes already), I expected a bigger finish.

As for what will become of the development team now...

...they're going to start working on Tekken again, so we can infer that the next game won't happen for some time now.

I don't really get the whole rebooting idea that's going around. What's the point? Cutting characters for the chance of a possible rework is a silly and drastic idea. There's nothing stopping the developers from currently altering Ganondorf or other characters moveset other than their own unwillingness to do so. You don't need a major characters cut for that. Unless they rework the core of the game to something that plays completely differently than what we have now, then I see no reason to not just work off of what they currently have, adding and removing characters as needed due to licensing or whatever.

I think the idea is that plenty of characters are going to be removed no matter what, so they might as well change up the returning characters/gameplay to make the next game better stand out from Ultimate.

  12. Pit, Rex, and Sora get along well with one another ever since the latter was invited to Smash, and they tend to annoy the more serious fighters with how upbeat they all are.

In the Ace Attorney universe, Maurice Leblanc wanted to write a story where his character Arsene Lupin clashed wits with the great detective Herlock Sholmes, but Iris Wilson declined to give Leblanc permission to use Sholmes's likeness. To get around it, Leblanc made his own copyright-friendly version of Sholmes named "Sherlock Holmes". Phoenix happens to be a fan of Leblanc's works, which is why he refers to himself as "Sherlock Holmes II" in Turnabout Samurai rather than Herlock Sholmes II. Of course, this is assuming that Arsene Lupin isn't an actual person in the Ace Attorney universe, though it that case Leblanc might be Lupin's biographer.

  13. Metroid Fusion is finished with a time of 3:18 and 47% of items collected, which is longer than my last playthrough but that's probably because it's been a few years since I last played it. "See you next mission," indeed. The next mission only took 19 years to be released! Though technically speaking, we got some previous missions during that time.

For posterity, my Super Metroid playthrough earlier this year had a time of 5:49 with 55% of items. Maybe one day I'll try to get 100% completion in both Super and Fusion, but that will have to wait until after Dread releases.

I simply would've made a save state before then.

That would be nice, but I'm playing it on the 3DS which doesn't have save states.

See, Sora being in Smash confirmed a fear i had: that it'll have no Disney content (a.k.a the literal other half of the franchise) so it'll feel half-assed. And i won't deny the effort that was put into this but it definitely feels like things are missing.

To be fair, the Disney stuff has basically been filler in every game since the first. Final Fantasy is almost completely nonexistent in the recent games.

Because I grew up playing Star Fox 64 when my childhood still wasn’t buried alive. Plus he looks kewler with a sword in the Dinosaur Planet beta then he does with a staff in Star Fox Adventures.

That's Fox McCloud? But that's a different guy! Dinosaur Planet was originally unrelated to Star Fox so that should be a different character, unless he was changed to Fox before development moved to the GameCube.

  15. When you beat Nightmare with only 1 HP remaining

    9533546.jpg

but then a Space Pirate kills you before you can save so you have to fight Nightmare again

    29e56h.jpg

That aside, Samus discovered the secret Metroid cloning facility (back when cloning Metroids was a novel idea), so I'm pretty sure I'm close to the end of Fusion. I think I just have Ridley and the final bosses left before the game's finished.

  16. Illustration_-_Super_Smash_Bros_Ultimate

    Breathtaking, isn't it?

I for one am glad that Sora doesn't come with any non-KH original Disney content. Smash is a commemoration of the gaming industry so having Donald and Goofy show up would just be... weird. I'm sure Sakurai's adversity to non-video game characters is one of the reasons for that, we have enough people asking for Goku already.

Now that we have every character, I wonder why Koei Tecmo got basically nothing. Sure, they got an Assist Trophy and some spirits, but all that content was shared with other developers, there's no Warriors or Ninja Gaiden or anything. They didn't even get any Mii costumes for crying out loud. Considering how expansive Ultimate's content became it's strange that one of Nintendo's most consistent partners got nothing of their own.

  17. I can't believe Benice summoned Sora into Smash by playing Kingdom Hearts music. I'm mainly surprised that Haley Joel Osment is still voicing him; no union issues will stop the final character I suppose.

On the other hand, I can claim credit for summoning Doomguy's Mii costume. Rip and tear!

  18. Ultimate's three and a half year speculation period is almost over. If there are any last minute predictions/wishes, now is the time to mention them. I'm been satisfied with the roster since Pyra and Mythra were added, but I hope the last Mii costume wave includes Phoenix Wright (Brawler), Ryu Hayabusa (Swordfighter), the Doom Slayer (Gunner), and Shovel Knight (Swordfighter with music) assuming none of them are the final character.

As a reminder, here's the final presentation if you don't have it prepared already:

  19. I can't wait for Cat Mario voiced by Chris Pratt to be the final Smash character. Remember "because I'm a fan of meow-meow Mario" during the Smash ballot? It was a hint all along.

Rip and tear, until it is done.

  20. The NES classic Ninja Gaiden is called Ninja Ryukenden in Japan, because the developers thought the latter name would be too hard for English speakers to pronounce. "Gaiden" was picked for the title because it sounded cool, since it means "side story" despite the game not being a spinoff of anything. But oddly enough, Ninja Ryukenden was supposed to be called Ninja Gaiden to begin with, but was changed at the last minute because Tecmo's president felt it lacked impact.

On the other hand, the modern hack and slash trilogy is titled "Ninja Gaiden" even in Japan. The title fits better in this case, because those games are arguably a side story of Dead or Alive, which Ryu Hayabusa also appears in.

  21. Obligatory Nep:

Last night I had a dream where the last Smash Bros. character was a middle aged lady who was supposedly from Triangle Strategy, though her artstyle made her look like a Pixar character. I'm sure everyone in my dream was mad at Sakurai for adding another Square Enix character from a game that wasn't released yet. I remember someone (maybe me) posting this in response:

38c.jpg (Get ready to see this tomorrow.)

Also Gloria from Bravely Default II was present in some form, and people were wondering why they didn't make her playable instead.

  22. I can't believe it leaked that Mecha Crocomire is the final boss of Dread, I never expected him to come back.

As another thing about Fusion's bosses, it's cool that the bosses use the power ups you get from defeating them. It makes getting those abilities feel more rewarding. Speaking of which, I would like if Dread let you activate/deactivate power ups like in Super Metroid, but I don't expect it. Mix and matching different beams was fun.

Maybe now Metroid 1 is actually beatable... even if it sets your playtime to over 300 years.

  23. Ah yes, Speed Snek has reminded me of how troublesome Fusion's bosses are, but not in the sense of having multiple phases like the Diggernaut and Metroid Queen. From what I remember a few of them are difficult because they're aggressive and fast, which makes them hard to hit. I even died to Serris's Core X...

Reminds me of the time I accidentally took a dancing class in college.
