Sometimes it feels like the more sure I am about a prediction, the more likely I'll be wrong.

Ah, well, makes the banner that much easier to skip.

I don't see what the problem is, Female Byleth already was part of a duo for Summer. They like to keep the Avatars even, as seen with Robin getting his Alternate Costume this Halloween, and with Male Byleth being part of a Duo, they are currently even. We'll probably get a Legendary Male Corrin as a Hoshido Noble soon so the Corrins will be equal.

Cool. It's still a bad idea. Looking at the comments from every official social media page FEH has, as well as unofficial places such as here and reddit, shows that. They're overloading TH, a lot of people are noticing, and a lot of people are tired of it.

I highly doubt that this site and Reddit is the majority of Fire Emblem Fans worldwide.

Didn't say it was surprising and I'm very well aware of both how much money TH made and why Awakening and Fates were overloaded. I've been playing Heroes quite literally since Day 1. Doesn't change anything. TH has still been completely overloaded, it was a bad idea with Awakening and Fates and it's been a bad idea with TH.

I don’t see how it’s a bad idea they are promoting characters from the most popular games from a business perspective. The vast majority of players  today now started from either Fire Emblem Awakening, Fates, or Three Houses. These are the games that are the most familiar to the majority of the audience, and thus are obviously more willing to spend more money on the characters they recognize. For the majority of players, this is a good thing that the games they recognize are getting more characters, and that means there is significant amount of more revenue being made from theses games compared to something like Genealogy of the Holy War, which was Japan-only and has little to no western audience. As someone who started with Fates and has only played the 3DS titles and Three Houses, I know for a fact that the only way I’m spending a lot of money if its characters from one of those titles. I couldn’t give a penny if it’s from any title that was wasn’t the 3DS or Three Houses, even if the character has an English Dub.

I'm pretty disappointed with this year's Halloween lineup. I'm really tired of Three Houses showing up everywhere. And they aren't even using TH characters that make sense, like Lysithea and Hubert, or even Alois and Mercedes.

Male Robin probably being the evil possessed Robin again is silly.

I really hope the TT+ unit is Nils or Awakening Tiki, but I'm expecting Nasir or Gareth.

It’s not very surprising though. Three Houses is the series’s best selling game, so of course they are going to put units from that series left and right. It’s the same reason why Fates and Awakening had the most representation as well: They are the games that sold the most, so they get the most representation. Keep in mind that this game’s ultimate goal is to make money.

As for Male Robin, they like to keep the Avatars even. I’m sure we’ll get a Legendary Male Corrin as a Hoshido Noble very soon.

I'll have to ultimately disagree, as there are still a number of games which aren't readily available outside of emulations and which by now have even less QoLs

You do have a point there. The first six games were never released internationally, which means there is an audience that never played them, meaning there is a reason to pick those up if you are not Japanese. In that case, if the next game had to be a remake, I wish for it to be a Japanese only title.

Alm earns the Royal Sword after he slays Desaix, pursuing him to his last defensive point. It wasn't simply his blood, but also his own actions that let him wield the Royal Sword. Even with the Falchion he had to pass through a set of trials to reach make it his to wield.

Through that logic, I could argue that anyone else ( Faye, Clive, Clair ) deserves the sword since they helped defeat Desaix. But even if they wanted to possess the sword, they couldn't  because they don't have the royal blood, which Lukas states officially states only Royalty can use it. The sword doesn't choose people based off merit, it chooses it based off lineage, in this case Rigelian lineage, meaning Alm's merits mean nothing if he doesn't have the correct blood. Here's a quote of that conversation, from firemblewiki.org.

    Spoiler

"Tobin: Whoa, look at this. Hey, Alm!
    Alm: You find something, Tobin?
Tobin: I sure did. Feast your eyes on this baby! You think this is the treasure Desaix stole from Zofia Castle?
Alm: Well...it certainly looks important. Should we open it?
Tobin: Whooooooa! Check the sword! That is one impressive piece of hardware! I'm just gonna—
Tobin: Hng...! Whu... Huh? This thing weighs a ton! It won't...budge...
Lukas: This must be the Royal Sword of Zofia.
    Alm: What's that?
Lukas: Long ago, Rigel presented this sword to Zofia as a symbol of friendship. It's a very special treasure—only one of royal blood can lift it.
Alm: Hmm... Interesting. Here, Tobin—let me have a go at it.
Tobin: You?! Pfft, please. If I can't lift it, there's no way that— Huh?!
Alm: Sometimes I don't get you, Tobin. This thing's light as a feather. Was this all some kind of jape? Who put you up to this?
Tobin: But...but it wasn't a jape! Zero japes! I thought my arms would snap just trying to lift it!
    Alm: Hmm. But that means...
Lukas: By the gods... You can wield the Royal Sword! ...Hmm, what DOES that mean? Alm, are you...
Alm: ...... O-oh, come on. It's just some legend. You don't actually BELIEVE it, right? I'm sure everyone can use this thing! Well, except Tobin. And...um... Look, I'm sure the Zofian royals made up a story to keep folks from nicking it.
Lukas: ...Well, that didn't exactly work out now, did it? But perhaps you're right. Tales do have a habit of getting taller with time. Either way, it seems clear the blade belongs with you.
Alm: Are you sure? I mean, we could have other people give it a shot.
Lukas: It wouldn't work. You alone seem able to tame this legend. And we wouldn't want to see so fine a treasure wasted, would we? Take it.
    Alm: Well...all right...

I am referencing a lot of scenes around Act 3, where there is a plethora of evidence of his heritage, and he even has an argument with Clive about the fact the Alm knows that Clive has discovered some dark secret about Alms origin, and Alm goes out of his way to say that he wont press him on the matter. Until his willful ignorance kills his own father, he actively remains in the dark about his lineage.

Alm doesn't know that he's a royal though. The game implies it, but throughout his whole life as far as he can remember, he was a farmboy. He denies the strange signs of being royalty in Act 3 not because he wants to denounce his heritage, but because he's clueless about his birth and the signs contradict his life as a farmer which he has known ever since being a boy.

It mattered to Alm. When he first hears of the prophecy he doesn't believe it, and even after he learns it is his father's dying wish, Alm doesn't talk about it like its destiny, he talks about fulfilling that promise to the dead, and rescuing Celica.

Ultimately though, Alm eventually slays Duma sucessfully freeing Valentia from gods, which was described in Halycon's prophecy. Regardless of what Alm's feelings, he fulfills the destiny that Halycon proclaimed: The two brand bearers would save Valentia.

If the Yato wasn't conveniently passed on to Corrin's kid in heirs of Fate I might actually believe you. Corrin is a royal of Valla, and even claims that throne at the end of Revelations, and every other legendary weapon associated with the Yato, that power it up, are all wielded by royals too, even in Heirs of Fate.

Its never stated that the Yato requires someone to be a royal. You cannot deny the possibility that being a Royal is not a requirement for for lengendary weapons in Fates.

    1 hour ago, Seazas said:

Him being a royal doesn't destroy what he preaches, it only reinforces the best of both worlds otherwise what's the point of preaching that men have merit regardless of station if the game ONLY shits on nobles and ONLY puts commoners on a pedestal?

Alm didn't earn the right to the throne through merit. He inherited it from his father, who was the emperor of the nation. It was his birthright. Its true that Tobin and Alm get to be knights, but  Python and Faye ends up living a quiet life in the village, while Forsyth remains where he started , as a knight. And even if the game sucessfully shows that characters can rise because of their merit, its also gives the impression that one's birth is also important for determining merit, thanks to Alm's birth.

  7. 13 hours ago, Eltosian Kadath said:

He repeatedly rejects the idea of him becoming king. He willfully refuses to even learn the secret of his birth. He literally kills every other member of his lineage he meets. How much more fighting against his royal lineage does he need to do before you are satisfied?

That‘s not true. He does become King, under the title “ Saint King Alm “. No he doesn’t, he openly demands to ask Mycen why people are calling him a prince- never does he denounce his Royal heritage. It’s true that he kills his blood family, but that doesn’t matter. He still is destined to kill Duma, regardless of who he kills in the end. He commits a terrible sin, but he isn’t punished in the same way Celica is held as a hostage and has her party fighting terrors. Instead, Alm and his party continue their goal of slaying Duma. It would have made no difference if Rudolf died or not.

14 hours ago, Eltosian Kadath said:

Its more than just his lineage that lets him wield the royal sword, unlike Fates his swords don't magically fly into his hand, Alm has to earn it through his actions.

That’s completely untrue. The game shows us for a fact that only Royalty can use the sword, the game shows that’s true because Tobin tries to pick up the sword but he fails, while Alm successfully picks a hint to his birth.

Actually, the Yato chooses the person destined to bring peace to the world, not because they are a Royal, suggesting that the Yato doesn’t care about lineage.

  8. Oooh boy, time for an unpopular opinion! Remakes in general are my least favorite game. Instead of trying to take a risk with a new idea they instead cash in on an idea that is already safe and familiar to the audience. It comes off as a lazy move. If I want to purchase a remake they actually have to innovate it in a new way. The other issue is that remake often keep all the original problems that the games had instead of fixing it, probably for sake of “ staying true to the originals. “

Bear in mind it doesn’t solely apply to Fire Emblem games. This also applies to other games from other franchises as well. Look at Pokémon FRLG for example. While it’s true that the games add the Sevii Islands to catch the missing Johto Pokémon from Pokémon  RS,  it has one critical flaw that really hurts the game if not outright ruins it- The player can only use the original 151 Pokémon until they have obtained the National Dex and have caught 60 Pokémon, and they cannot trade with RS at all until post game is completed. This means if you want to complete a National Dex in Gen 3 you have to 100% complete FRLG even if you really don’t want to. To add insult to injury, you have to watch Chansey and Golbat’s trying to evolve animation fail every time until you obtain the National Dex unless you give them an everstone. So much had Kanto had changed over the years, like the Pokémon gaining new evolutions as well as the new types introduced in GS. Kanto also has a really bad type distribution as a whole: Too many Poison, Flying, and Normal types exist, while Dragon, Ghost, Steel and Dark are far too rare. The Dratini line is your only option for a Dragon type in the entire game, allowing Kingdra would have allowed for another option. The same applies to Magnemite since it’s the only Steel type line in the entire game. Having Steelix and Scizor would have had more options. The worst apart about FRLG is that there are 0 Dark types in the game at all until the post game even though had an option in Umbreon.

And when they had Let’s Go later on, they still did not have any cross evolutions introduced later on, even though Go was in Gen 4, which was when the majority were introduced.

I had similar issues with Echoes for “ staying true to the Originals “ for similar reasons. Atrocious Maps that are slow, and require tanking, cantors who summon enemies to make the process even slower, as well as simplified UI missing more the dynamic mechanisms like Pair Up, flexible class changes, and more than one inventory. And that’s not going into the mess of Echoes’s story, which has one character who solely exists to make another one look better despite already being a Mary Sue.

Now, that’s not to say that I despise remakes as a whole, there are remakes I do like, look at HGSS for example. While I love HGSS to death, there are still critical flaws to it. They still didn’t fix the awful level curve from the original GS, especially of the Kanto Pokémon which are really low-leveled Pokémon Wyeth you get there. And while you could obtain some of the new evolutions introduced in Gen 4, the majority could only be obtained in the post game in the remake, though unlike FRLG, you could trade to obtain them should you really want them.

Sorry if that sounded like a rant, but that’s my explanation for why I find remakes a subjectively lazy  move and tends to bank on the safe aspect of the fact that people know that it is something they enjoy. And why I don’t like them keeping certain flaws all for the point of “ staying true to the originals “. I’d much prefer a new FE title other than a remake.

The point about supports having no gameplay influence wasn’t that they were useless, it was that they felt useless. Which while I don’t agree with I can definitely see, because supports are so common that it’s basically just a matter of time causing them to increase- and therefore replacing the increasing levels of support with, say, increasing professor level would probably be almost indistinguishable.

As for paired endings he does have a point. I’ve lost track of the times where I’ve gotten an ending that I didn’t want- the fact that they needed to add the DLC lady is proof of that. And if you don’t have that and want to avoid getting supports you have to go way too far out of your way for my liking- avoiding pairing units on the battlefield, never letting them eat together. Sure it’s possible, and maybe it’s easy for some- but for me at least it’s really annoying (or would be if I actively tried to not pair specific people up- I don’t care about paired endings that much, though I know people that do).

As for skipping, honestly sometimes even the prospect of skipping supports fills me with dread and I procrastinate completing them. I’m a fairly patient person, but sometimes I get so many supports that I can’t even be bothered to press a single button to skip them. I have no clue if I’m alone on that front, but yeah.

Just because it feels like they have no effect doesn’t mean that they in function have zero effect. I really don’t know what to say if you find it so time-consuming to literally press a button once in order to skip a cutscene. It really doesn’t take much time at all. I guess you are more impatient than you think?

Also, the DLC lady being the only way to track relationships is false. If you check your character’s personal history page, it will show you the closet ally to that person from left to right, with left being the closest. That’s how I managed to see who were the closest prior to the DLC.

Two points kind of seem in contradiction there. I might not want Bernadetta and  Ferdinand to get married, but if I'm interested in getting those gameplay benefits,  then I am going to want them to get their A support. And from there it's basically Genealogy of the Holy War style of blindly keeping units close or away from each other in hopes that the support points dole out ina preferred way. Course I reject the whole notion of paired endings as being something worth caring about to begin with, but I do see the logic in not liking how the game takes the control away from you. And I think the developers knew that too what with making an exception for Byleth and letting you have an active choice there.

As for how to get characters to their ideal match, I never had too much trouble for my units to get paired up. It does require planning and some manipulation, like taking advantage of Axuillary battles and  the pair up to help increase support points. I did not get all the paired endings, and the ones I did not get were single endings, but I never found it that bothersome because Paired ending are purely aesthetic in this game, at least not to the point you guys are making out to be.

  10. I don’t get your complaints about supports. Supports in Three Houses do have a gameplay influence for starters, they help increase your gambits hit rates. That’s objectively true. I also don’t see how it’s any more difficult to pair up people for their endings compared to Awakening/Fates. Yes, you get to choose your final S-Rank support in those games, but that’s because children are a critical mechanic that it would be unfair for it to be automatic. In contrast, paired endings in Three Houses are only seen at then end and have virtually no impact on the campaign gameplay wise. I also don’t see how it’s more difficult to separate characters from gaining supports. If you don’t want Bernie and Ferdinand gaining support points, you can just have them not interact with each other by not serving as the adjacent, not doing Monasteries activities with them, or having them not be adjacent to each other fight. And if you really don’t want them have any supports, you cannot just play them. Granted Byleth is guaranteed supports with characters thanks to tutoring unlike Corrin and Robin, but you can choose Byleth’s paired ending in the end, so it doesn’t matter. Also if there are way too many supports to watch, you can always skip them via the + button on the joycons.

No, not enough dodge! We need Ferdinand with Alert Stance+, Sword Prowess 5, Sword Evasion+20, Wyvern Lord avoid+10, Immortal Corps battalion and a evasion ring.  That's over 100 avoid before you even factor in his actual stats. Absolutely unhittable. Dimitri could pull off too as his post time skip personal skill provides 5 more avoid than Ferdinand's. You also have two skill slots open, so you could toss on renewal and quick riposte to top up his personal skill and avoid getting doubled (though getting both of them in addition to Alert stance+ and Sword Prowess 5 would probably be impossible outside of New Game+ shenanigans)

Dimitri is a lot harder due to a weakness in Axes. It’s a shame Falcon Knight is gender-locked, since that would be the master class for him.

As for Ferdinand, is he still quite strong as a cavalier/wyvern in Maddening? I actually had to bench him a couple of times, because he was hogging up too much EXP because of how busted he became in Normal Mode CF.

Alert Stance stacks with Ferdinand’s personal skill and combined with an evasive ring, makes him an excellent dodge tank.

We must have a different understanding of peace - just because the big nations don´t outright go at it, having a rebellion within your borders and constant struggle on foreign borders as well isn´t a continent being peaceful. Claiming it to be seem akin sitting in an ivory tower.

You are missing the point. I said the nations are more or less at peace with each other. They are allies at this point of this stage of the game. Yes there are conflicts like skirmishes and bandits within the nations, but the continent has lacked civil wars between the countries for the majority of its years ever since Rhea founded the Church and Crest System. That's one positives of Rhea's crest system, it brought Fodlan stabillity and allowed the continent  and nations to flourish for more than a millenia.

    2) Why are people like this. For one your Dark Mage Xander example falls flat for a couple of reasons. First off, I can see two skills being somewhat relevant for Xander - Heartseeker wich is a lvl5 Dark Mage skill, which will be gained instantly upon getting a single level in said class and Lifetaker, which is a lvl 15 Dark Knight skill - which would take quite some time, but guess what, still got access to swords. Secondly, Xander has a SPD and RES problem - the Dark Mage class line fixes none of that in a fashion that other classes or even Fates mechanics itself won´t adress better than some ridiculously convoluted class path. To top that off, Lifetaker being useful is arguable - a neat skill to have sure, but Xanders most remarkable unit trait is he is tanky as shit. And Heart Seeker is almost worthless to Xander because 1. he doesn´t have accuracy issues and 2. Xanders other remarkable unit trait is uninhibited 1-2 range, so Heartseeker isn´t a particularly great choice here.

That's not the point. The point isn't whether Xander is a good Dark Mage or not nor does he benefit from the skills. The point is that significantly harder to grind for Skills in a game like Fates/Awakening because of how weapon locks apply, discouraging people to try get skills like Heartseeker on an Axe unit simply because it means grinding from weapon rank E while gaining the levels, making it much more tedious to gain the right levels for the skills. If you want a class that's more more " suited " to Xander, try his secondary Wyvern Rider. Its a great class set for him, including skills like Swordbreaker and Savage Blow he can benefit from, but most players won't bother because it means losing Siegfried and grinding for the weapon ranks which requires auxiliary battles which means grinding, which is severely limited on Conquest.

In contrast the Wyvern Rider, despite specializing in Axes and Lances in Three Houses, its still considered one of Byleth's best classes thanks to the amazing movement, canto, and the fact they can use Sword of the Creator thanks to the classes no longer have weapon locks.  That means if you are soley in a class to master the skills, its much easier since you can use weapon ranks you already have grinded instead delegating to the class specialities when trying to master a class for the skill.

    47 minutes ago, Imuabicus said:

This is all around ridiculous. 1) Uh, no? What´s it take to class change in most FE´s? A Master Seal of sorts and having hit level 10. Ogma + Master Seal = instantly useful (not to imply he wasn´t useful before). Even class changing to other class paths is easy in Awakening and Fates - get level 10 get correct Seal, done. Heck, as far as I can tell, for some games you have tier list discussions that even adress which units to early promote to make them short term useful, because their power spike is needed in the short term, but not long term. What do you have in TH again? Oh yeah reach the relevant level and then you may take your promotion - unless you didn´t manage to reach the relevant weapon ranks, in which case go back to school or enjoy the RNG and potential waste of promotional items. Not to mention in every other FE I have played myself you can reclass/promote directly on the map, giving the unit an instant stat boost and possibly better movement (I think most promotions do?).

The class change system is done as a nod to the school setting. And while its true that you have to risk a seal in order to gain a new class, Three Houses is a game where the level system does not reset to 20, rather the level remains the same and surpasses 20 mark. Because of this system, promoting into a higher tier class is not nessarily the best course of action, and the stat boost you get are incredibly small compared to other games. As a result, its not uncommon for many units to remain in Advanced or even intermediate for playthroughs. So there's no pressure to promote immediately to a higher tier class. Just give a bit more tutoring and try again.  Also if you really don't want to lose a seal, just save, and if you fail, turn it off.

    1 hour ago, Imuabicus said:

    1) Written by: Hard mode. I tried Lightning Axe Annette on Maddening and it was fun for the 2 chapters she had the accuracy for - no doubt my fault for messing up her build. But an excellent WR/WL looks vastley different from WR/WL Annette. 2) Really? Comparing two games that are almost 30 years appart, to make a point? The second part of that sentence I´m not entirely clear about. 3)

What's I'm trying to say that because of the tutoring system and the fact that most units start off as a blank slate and its true that units boons and banes in certain categories, nothing is stopping the player from trying whacky builds. That's one of my favorite part of Three Houses- it gives all you the flexibility to teach your students whatever subjects you want,  allowing for the potential for crazy sets. This is Three Houses telling you, " These characters are blank slates, its time for you to mold and train them to whatever role you need. " Being able to customize your characters in any way you want to fit is a staple of the RPG genere, and this is Three Houses way of doing it. Whether or not your crazy builds succeed is another question, but I myself have done builds that have use a character's weakness as one of the requirements.

I don't see why its odd to compare games who are years apart. People always say the recent FE games have terrible map design, and they should go back to something big and complex like Shadow Dragon or Genealogy. As for third point, I was just disagreeing with the units who you bench.

    2 hours ago, Imuabicus said:

) Ah basic unit variety. What every other FE game has inherently, we now declare a great feat of the game. 2) What, a Falcon Knight with Alert Stance being a great dodge tank? Never ever have I heard of that before. Immediately followed by mentioning the same unit build in two different camapigns... yeah no. Map reuse + same unit builds = boring game.

Did you even read my post on XY and why I love it and how its comparable to Three Houses? That is a grossly simplified explanation of why I don't find the map reuse of Three Houses an issue. In my post, How the player attempts each map varied depending on the two factors: The students they recruited and the type of class they are. Unlike a game like Awakening , Fates, or Echoes, where the player had a guaranteed set amount of units they would have recruited by each chapter, all in a certain class with a certain weapon rank. Not in Three Houses. A player might not have not a warp user to clear Chapter 16's map if they just used their default Blue Lions students without recruiting a single warp user, or none their units are a mage. But in contrast, if the player was using the default Golden Deer students to clear Chapter 16, the warp option is avalible thanks to Lysithea being a member of the house by default. To put the point simply, how each player approaches each map  and what strategies they use will be different depending on who they have recruited and what classes they are in currently in. And since the majority of the player units ( At least their chosen house ) will be a different role for each run due to starting as villager, it renders strategies that would have worked for all players in previous games due to each units already being in a pre-determined advanced class and being guranteed recruitments. That's why I find Three Houses reused maps not an issue- every time I play through the maps, its a different experience and I use different strategies and units.

Oh, what a pity. I always made sure I always returned lost items to students once I got them. It's a great way to develop points for the professor level as well as learning more about the interests of the people of the academy. That being said, I understand why you don't enjoy Three Houses. As I've stated above and is my main point still, Three Houses is a game that rewards you for getting invested into the world of Fodlan: its history, culture, people, and practices The more you invest, the better the rewards. Activities like returning items and minigames help you learn about your allies what histories they have and how Fodlan's current politics affect them. Obviously someone who just wants to go to battle with minor breaks and does not care about the history or current story of Three Houses in not going to like this game because it wants you to care about Fodlan, its people, and its future. And for those who invest in these people and social issues, they get the better rewards, which is a good thing because towards a play style that is enhanced by those features.

But I also didn't love it either. Admittedly, I did like the grinding aspect. XY is an easy game to grind money and exp in, and that made it pretty simple overall. But I didn't mind that.

Thanks! A potentially big reason why grinding is so easy in XY is because competitive battling became a lot more prominent when XY came out, with notable change being that Legendary Pokemon were guaranteed 31 IVs while the Destiny Knot passes down 5 IVs when breeding instead of three.

  15. Sorry about the late reply, my fingers were very sore from typing too much yesterday.

feel something is missing here... aren´t there bandits making the area unsafe, even for the next in line successors of the three major nations? Religiously motivated rebellions? A dark cult wishing to bring about the end of the continents major religion - at the same time a seemingly important factor in holding the triangle of great powers in moderate equilibrium? The very same dark cult who is already plenty active in Rheas very own base of power - intruding even on (one of) it´s most holy sanctuaries and fucks villages up by spreading angry-plague as well as turning students into monsters? Also the tension along borders, outside as well as within Fodlan, no?

Mostly at peace. Unlike other FE games, Fódlan is clearly has it nations at ease. There’s no major wars going on as of Part 1. Yes, there all small squirmishes throughout Fódlan that serves as a pre-cursor to Edelgard’s declaration of war, but until then there is no major conflict between the four powers until at said declaration.

This sounds like it almost exclusively has supports in mind. To which I say - anyone s-ranking anyone else in Fates/Awakening has a bigger impact on gameplay than any support has in TH.

Yes, supports also play a huge role in helping learning about their units in order to make decisions what gifts to give or what topics to discuss at tea parties. For example, by paying attention to Ashe’s supports, you’ll notice he loves tales of chivalry, so the book of chivalry would make an excellent gift for him. Supports do have a huge role in battle, notably they make gambits significantly more accurate, with the higher the support level, the better the Gambit Boosts. So saying supports don’t have any direct impact on gameplay is false.

    1) What´s your point here exactly? 2) TH encourages reclassing by placing certain skills or Combat Arts at the end of mastering a class. Tutoring sessions are a means to achieve that. Re weapon ranks: sure, and in intermediate and below I can see that somewhat - outside of the fact that you get bonus weapon exp when using the wepoan your class is strong in (I think - my mechanical knowledge of TH is limited at best). But as of advanced classes, using a weapon you do not have your Prowess/Faire skill equipped is probably/almost (?) always worse in accuracy, damage and crit. And don´t bother with but "muh effective damage" I´m hitting a horse/armor dude with magic before I bother with mano-a-mano combat. Also Knightkneeler/Helm Splitter with any lance/axe before I buy a Horseslayer/Mace/Hammer

My point is that it’s much easier to class change and be immediately more useful than compared to other games. For example if I wanted to make a Xander a Dark Mage in Fates, I would have to completely grind Xander’s weapon rank for tomes from the bottom without any of use of other weapons due to them being locked. It makes it so much harder to level him as a Dark Mage to the point that most players would skip it and keep Xander as Paladin despite the potential payoff of Skills from Dark Mage. In Three Houses, because the classes don’t have locks with the exception of magic and gauntlets, it makes it much easier to improve the ranks of things like weapons and flying skills by just battling in the class and not locking units to the classes primary weapons, which make it easier to gain levels and unit profiency ranks.

You still need Byleth to git gud at certain skills as well as stats - some of which can be harder to acquire than others (riding/armor/flying methinks). And the support increasing ain´t that easygoing either - some support levels are hidden behind Part 2 (not sure how relevant that is), not to mention for gifts you are running around the monastery like a madman looking for loot. Both of these things impact how easy or hard it is recruiting a character, which reflects badly on that freedom of recruitment. (I saw too late that you made that point yourself)

When I say player, I mean Byleth, who is an Avatar for the player. Yes, it’s take a while to grind for ranks and skills to improve students. That’s the whole point. And that’s why I say Three Houses rewards players who really gets involved in the Monastery and are willing to learn about Fódlan and the people who inhabit it. A game that makes you work towards goal and requires effort to unlock mechanics  isn’t bad thing at all, and in case, it’s a really good thing, because in the process you are learning about the students you wish to recruit and the rich culture, history, and social issues of Fódlan.

Yes it fucken does, especially when you have 4 routes. 1/2 of your game or more in the case of BE being the exact same every time - personally I think it´s an insult to players, because it feels like they looked at it and where like "Good enough for these idiots, lmao." Not to mention the recycling of maps, but that´s it´s own can of worms. And a potentially easy fix could have been to have the students of each house either take missions for shit going down in their very own homeland - not like there wouldn´t have been enough going on, from what I understand.

It does feel like a time constraint problem, but I don’t really think it’s that detrimental to Three Houses the repeated maps.

To explain why I don’t find Three Houses maps that bland despite repetition, I wanna bring up an analogy: In this case, Pokémon Y/X.

X and Y get a lot of hate in the Pokémon community for being too easy and the story being terrible. Despite that though, I still love XY and always have a blast replaying it despite how linear both the story and Kalos is. The saving grace of XY is its amazing diversity of Pokémon. It hardest Regional Dex to date, and there’s also many options available for team mates by the 1st gym. Here is a list on the top the head: Pidgey, Weedle, Caterpie, BunnelBy, Scatterbug, Fletchling, Pikachu, Panpour, Pansage, Pansear, Azurril, Litleo, Riolu, Farfetch’d, Psyduck, Bidoof, Dunsparce, Burmy, Zigzagoon, Ledyba, Skitty, Flabebe, Ralts, Budew, and Combee, all before the 1st gym. All of these are available before the 1st gym, and that’s not the whole List. Despite XY being so linear, the amazing roster makes every battle feel so different despite the same story and battles. I always feel excited when I beat Lysandre in his finale, and looking back at it, I still find how exciting it was to defeat Lysandre despite doing it so many times, with each different moments on who was the MVP.

Now the same logic I use to explain why I love XY despite the easy difficulty, same battles, and linear region also applies to Three Houses.

Every map might be the same, but what each class which unit is varies on each play through. It all goes back to how easy it is tailor units to a class each player wants to fill a role. As a result, no two playthroughs will follow the same strategy for defeating a certain map. In my playthrough of AM Maddening, Manuela was my MVP on so many maps because she was a great dodge tank due to being a Falcon Knight with Alert Stance as well also being an excellent offensive units thanks to the Levin Sword and Hexblade. Right now during my SS Maddening playthrough, she’s a superb offense and support unit thanks to being a Trickster with the Foul Play skill + Fetters of Dromi. Or how Yuri was an excellent way for units to rescue units after they initiated combat thanks to Foul Play + Fetters of Dromi combo on my AM playthrough. It really saved my skin on the final map and Chapter 18. The point is, despite maps being reused they are still engaging because each player will have a different set of units in different classes in each playthrough, making sure each player will approach each map with a different strategy every time. And that not going into how different the narratives are and how engaging those characters are and how they want to achieve “ right “.

    3) Blank slates with near-minimal stat differences, about 3-4 archetypes of unit growths across all houses (including DLC?) and bad movement for the first ten levels - the implications of that differing greatly depending on difficulty. 2) My candidiates for instant benching: Caspar, Ferdinand, Bernadetta, Ashe, Sylvain, Lorenz, Raphael and Ignaz. Recruiting staff members or knights gives - short term at minimum - better units instantly. 1) Perhaps I play vastly different, but I focus extra hard on the characetrs i wish to use - the rabble can rot in the abyss.

You don’t have to follow the optimal routes. You could make Annette a standard mage as always, but thanks to her talent in Axes, she can also make an excellent Wyvern Rider if you wished. Something like that was either not possible in game like SDABOL, or required a lot outside of grinding in Awakening/Fates. I disagree on Ferdinand, Bernadetta, Caspar, Raphael, Sylvain, Ashe, and Lorenz assessments BTW. Those units have served me excellent in so many playthroughs.

You see oaks, cedars, and willows, I see a forest. I think it's as simple as that, a difference in perspectives. And that's perfectly acceptable in something as unimportant as popular entertainment. 🙂

Sorry if I sounded too passionate. This is something I picked from Pokémon forums and Youtubers like Tamashii Hiroka. When we criticize or praise a game, we give long paragraphs backed up by evidence. If your interested in seeing how detailed these posts are, I can post a link to one of my friend’s post on Smogon why he think HGSS are the worst game in the franchise.

Discrimination against other species, with the indirect exception of environmentalism (or veganism) I suppose, which JRPGs also tend to feature in some magical fantasy form, is not relevant IRL. JRPGs and the ilk want for whatever reasons to speak of relevant issues. But, the writers, for a multitude of reasons I can speculate on, keep the treatment mild and not hit too close to reality. If you want slaves, make them shapeshifting beasts -without brown skin- because you'll land in a lot of hot water if you mess the portrayal of brown-skinned slavery up. If you want to portray anti-Semitism in Europe, as Valkyria Chronicles does, use dark blue hair instead of religion as the divider between Semite and gentile, because nobody IRL has dark blue hair, so nobody will criticize you.

I'm not saying that there are 0 examples of discrimination in the game, rather, I'm saying that its not really racism when the two groups are clearly different species with objectively different traits, in this case one of the groups can take the form of animals. Racism by defintion is these two things: "The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another." or "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized." In the former's case, there's clearly distinct barrier between the two groups as established above, and the latter only applies to members of the same species.

That's the issue  I have with Disney's Zootopia: Judy learns that she should have not have judged Nick Wilde, a fox for being a fox. The problem here, however, is that makes perfect sense from a biological standpoint for a bunny to be scared of a fox, especially since the history states that prey was once hunted by predators in the film, hence potentially providing a justification for prejudice against the predators in the film. In this case, its more like justified speciesism.

The same issues I have with Zootopia also apply to POR/RD. There is a physical distinction between Laguz and Beorc, with one race being capable of transforming into another animal like a Dragon, Lion, Wolf, or a Bird, two of which can kill people in real life. Its probably common sense to say that these beings posess much greater physical strength compared to a non-transformer, at least when transformed. It would make sense to be afraid of people who could change into a giant animal and has the potential to kill you easily. If you had a brought a pet Lion and told me it was tame, I still would not go near it because its wild animal that has been not been sucessfully been domesticated by people and has attacked and eaten people in the past and still retains it wild traits. And we know for fact that Beorc and Laguz are not same species for the aforementioned above. I won’t go too much more into POR/RD because I never played the games. The issue feels more like speciesism, especially considering the different kind of Laguz.

In the end, I find Three Houses handling of racism more relatable than Zootopia even if its not the main focus simply because it focuses on humans being discriminated, which makes it a lot easier to sympathize with members of the same species, who we know for the fact do not have drastic biological differences.

In the case of Zootopia, I would make it instead of different mammals living in a society, I would make it a different breeds of animals, because breeds of animals are the same species, jsut different charcteristics. A pitbull would make a perfect "Aggressive" breed that is misunderstood, while a toy poodle would make a perfect " cute " breed due to its small size.
