Hmmm, Derrick does have some pretty decent vibes, but they don't resonate correctly, y'know?

    Not-Volo's vibes are pretty whack.

No unit I can stan yet, so see ya when next I'm relevant. Ta-ta!

But... he stops charging right before reaching the enemy! He stops, faces the enemy and then breaks at least four laws of physics to uppercut the enemy with the sword!

If thats the case, then he's probably doing a momentum slash. Stopping the horse and swinging the sword at the same time to transfer the forward momentum into the slash, making it far stronger in the process.

    Christine, more like CRUSHtine.

  3. Knight, Good defense and a double negater are definitely good picks.

The right unit as a ninja will demolish any enemy, also good 1-2 range wrecks enemy magic users, replicate can be fun to mess with too.

Samurai, because vantage + LnD is one hell of a drug

Archer, if we don't need outlaws for lockpicking the archer is a much better combat choice (Kinshi > not kinshi)

Diviner, if only for onmyoji healing utility

Oni Savage, I like the blacksmith class, sue me

Mercenary, mainly because if you can promote to a Bow Knight, and bows are super good in Fates (damage wise Yumi are better than axes, deal effective damage AND grant +2 res, stupid good)

    Cavalier, Shelter, nuff said.

Hoshido noble, if only because healing is good from E rank, whereas tomes only get good at D and great at C, meaning you'd need to burn an arms scroll for instant viability.

Just for fun if you have to be limited to one of each style of weapon.

Swords >>> Katana ( The AS boost, is almost negligible and the .5 extra avoid is a terrible trade off for 1 whole point of defense)

Lances < Naginata (Def/Res boost are much better than 1 extra might)

Axes > Clubs (5 crit is not worth the guarenteed damage)

Tomes < Scrolls (in a game where Nostanking isn't viable, the general stat boosts of scrolls, give a unit a lot more options than tomes)

Daggers > Shuriken (while the 2 spd from shuriken makes them better than standard daggers, the soldiers knife is just that good, also the fruit knife and kris knife grant more healing utility. Since there are no Butler/Maids in this run our dagger users won't benefit much from res targeting)

Bows < Yumi (Yumi are just better bows)

Staves > Festals (while festals are better with 1-2 range healing, the freeze staff offers too much tactical options to lose)

I can't get over the uppercut, seriously. I'd like to call upon the thread's swordfighting experts, and ask them to explain to me what kind of swordsman uppercuts with his sword. Because my theory, as somebody who knows little about the matter, is that he's still drunk off his ass.

It's most likely a charging cavalry slash. It's easier to aim an upward swipe than a downward one whilst moving on a horse. Slashing down may have more force, but it would probably pitch you off your steed. Y'know in all those olde medieval movies, when the evil soldiers ride into town and make upward slashes on the fleeing townsfolk, same principle. Some power is lost but it's more than made up for in speed.

Also, cmon death, cmon death. Although I doubt you'd mess up like this so early on, you aren't that stupid Rube.

It doesn't even make sense. The word "good" cannot appear in close proximity of Arkis. It just doesn't work like that.

Would you rather I become a Volcens, stan? Arkis, may not be “good" but he vibes well, which I cannot say for any of the characters from Berwick so far.

Good uppy, cute thief girl, no good vibes as of yet.

I'll respond more when, a character that vibes with me shows up, somebody playable dies, or when the “B-plot" kicks in. Rest assured I am, still reading, but since I don't really understand the mechanics of the game, my commentary will be kinda low and infrequent, sorry man.

  8. Fe1/2/3/9/10: Have not played.

Fe 4: Prologue, it's the only Fe4 map I never got bored while playing.

Fe 5: Chapter 10, a good fun map with some cool stuff in it.

Fe 6: Never finished Fe6 actually, but I really enjoyed chapter 6 (especially stealing Cath's lockpick)

Fe 7: Chapter 17x, gets you some fun things, as well as giving an interesting map gimmick in the form of the “safe route"

Fe 8: Chapter 10, it has an interesting map flow.

Fe 11: Chapter 3, fun side objective, but I like it mostly due to its name.

Fe 12: Chapter 15, because I just like Abel.

Fe 13: Chapter 10, great music, fun map, and the best Camus in all of Fire Emblem.

Fe 14: N/A, none too great.

Fe 15: Nuibaba's abode, because I hate myself Grieth's Citadel

Fe 16: Hilda/Cyril's Paralogue, because it's the only map that I played, that felt like it was more than just “rout the enemy"

Given that the game was released in Japan only, that doesn't help those of us who can't read Japanese (or those of us who have to emulate), now does it?

I probably should have been clearer with my point. You are calling staff missing a “hidden mechanic" one not disclosed to the player, I'm saying that because it was put in the games manual, it's not an intentionally hidden mechanic, so it's not bad design or fake difficulty, if you don't know that Thracia staves can miss, that just means you the player didn't do your research on this Japanese game.

    1 hour ago, AnonymousSpeed said:

How likely is it that someone is going to emulate Thracia and not know that staves can miss? I feel like the chance of a Japanese player not reading the manual is much higher than an English-speaker emulating it and not knowing about that.

    This.

To not be aware of staff missing as an English speaker, you would have to:

    • Have knowledge that Thracia 776 is a game in the fire emblem series, but not know much about it.
    • Know where to find a translation patch compatible to the Thracia rom you download, but not gleam any context of the game's "interesting" mechanics from the forum or website where you sourced the patch.
    • Play the game and have a staff unit miss their heal.

This is fairly unlikely, so it's not the game's fault.

He might be confusing it with Dragon Quest, since over there resurrection spells do miss.

Almost certain that I failed a resurrect in whichever game Terra was from, eh my bad. Ah zing, laughably unreliable, there is truly nothing more dragon quest than exiting a battle and having to fail at reviving your ally five whole times in a row. Man I miss DQ9

  10. 1 hour ago, Shadow Mir said:

Pretty much, at least when it comes to healing and buffing. I would imagine that if that happened, in, say, a Final Fantasy game, players would riot and eviscerate the fuck out of it.

Fun fact, in most Final Fantasy games you can miss with healing magic (such as when attacking zombies with the cure spell) you'd probably be annoyed to know that the basic revive spell in most of the games, even if you land a hit only has a fixed 60-70%~ chance of succeeding, so evil if you're on target, you can still fail to resurrect a party member. (Thracia looking a whole lot more merciful now)

1 hour ago, Shadow Mir said:

Also, aren't status staves' odds of success tied to the magic of the user versus the magic of the target?

Not in Jugdral, in fe4 you just need more magic than the enemy's res and your hit was guaranteed, in Thracia you need more magic than your opponent or you can't target them, but you can still miss, as all staves use the same hit formula. Even rewarp, which never fails to amuse, because by the time your guys can use it, they should have enough skill to not miss, so only the enemy will ever miss a rewarp.

1 hour ago, Shadow Mir said:

Not relying too much on hiding vital knowledge from the player or having too much in terms of cumbersome mechanics that make it obvious that the difficulty is artificial.

I'm like 90% sure that staff missing was in the instruction booklet, back in the day where most games didn't even give you tutorials, just a plot synopsis, how the game worked and the control scheme. I still don't get what you mean by artificial difficulty tbh, could you give some other mechanics, like not Thracia ones if at all possible.

  11. 4 hours ago, Reisalin Stout said:

Both have their uses and since it's FE5 where staves are phenomenal and fatigue exists, you can never get enough of staff users.

    This.

There is no reason to choose between them, they are both useful on different maps, Linoan is a healer that can fight and promotes to the best class in the game, while Tina has great utility with the theif and unlock staves. If you were to give one of them paragon, it'd be Linoan,  but she doesn't need paragon to get good (her promotion bonuses alone make her solid, and she promotes from an event, not with a seal.

You are probably better off giving paragon to one of your physical fighters, like the axebros, finn or shiva. (real men give it to Lara for the level 20/20/20/20 thief fighter)

  12. 3 minutes ago, Shadow Mir said:

HOWEVER, I draw the line at the fact that healing staves can miss in Thracia.

So you feel that support abilities should be totally infallible, yes? Do you just feel that healing is to weak if it can miss or do you take issue with the fact that a staff miss can lead to a character death far more easily than for instance a bow miss? I'm pretty sure that heal missing is only there so that status staves can miss because: hardware limitations, that said would you remove heal missing if it meant status staves would never miss either.

Also, imma ask again, what do you consider the difference between fair difficulty and bullcrap difficulty.

My own two cents is that as somebody who loves the gambling nature of rng staff missing is just another fun gamble. Also it's hilarious when the Dark mages miss with their rewarp staves and just stand there for a hot minute looking like idiots.

  13. 54 minutes ago, Shadow Mir said:

That ignores that you're still at the mercy of the RNG before then. Also, the hardest part of a Fire Emblem game tends to be the earlygame. That means I have no assurance AT ALL during the hardest part of the game because not even my healers are reliable, in addition to having to deal with Thracia's other crappy mechanics. Yay.

Hate to break it to ya man, but fire emblem is a very RNG heavy game in general. Your units can still miss their attacks, is that bad from a gameplay perspective? If you really want to RNG proof Thracia's earlygame, just use Eyvel, the game rigs all combat so that she survives no matter what.

11 minutes ago, Shadow Mir said:

I want it to be the legitimately challenging kind of hard, not the frustrating kind of hard, which Thracia is.

What do you consider to be legitimate difficulty?

  14. 9 hours ago, The Roger The Paladin said:

Not even going into Final Fantasy II, which had legitimately bad gameplay due to a poor "levelling" system (if you can call it that), but really had a much better story than the generic 1 or 3.

Ah yes FF2, where you name 4 characters at the start, but only have three characters for most of the game, so you figure levelling guests is pointless, and you kill em off immediately to take their cool stuff and preserve exp. (that game was balanced around having experience divided by 4 so you just snap it in half by killing the guests.) (It doesn't even affect the difficulty of the extra episode (besides minwu caving in a few extra hits). Not to mention that you can use the chocobo forest to go to mysidia as soon as kashuan is available and buy some endgame gear like the flame bow and just utterly destroy any remaining pretence of difficulty.

    As for the topic.

    • Capture has already been stated to be great.
    • Fatigue is weirdly a mechanic I like a lot. Most of the time only one or two units are ever fatigued except for staff users but you have enough of them to swap them in and out. To me fatigue is less of a punishment for using x unit so much but more of a system to prevent healgrinding and stealgrinding, you can still do these things but it makes you think a little bit before you have safy heal that 1hp lithis gained from levelling up. Also it stops Dean from being completely broken. (not that it exclusively affects him, I'm just happy that ‘wyvern good and strong and best' doesn't apply as much.)
    • Min deployment just makes it so that “imma just use Seth" that Fe8 suffered from isn't as good an option anymore. You can still lowman, it's just a bit harder as you have to look after 6 other people. Would have been better if you could actually swap units though.
    • Staff missing just makes it so you have to plan around, and that you can't just go, he's fine, I can heal him as much.  (Vulneraries are good enough in this game that you can just ignore staves if you want to anyway. ) it also gives you a reason to promote to the laughably bad (combatwise) high priestess/Schroff's class with their E rank light magic.
    • The 1-99% doesn't come into play that often and I feel it spices up the game a little (there are no pointless actions) might have worked well with minimum 1 damage from gaiden.

Thracia has a bunch of interesting and cool core mechanics that make it unique, not better, not worse just different.

  16. Oh, sweet lord you're only as old as diamond/pearl.

I don't have any personal stories, but one dude in my year, got the nearly 60 year old physics teacher, chase him around the school building during class time, not sure why, but he got a detention for that one.

Anyway, you are just going to a slightly bigger school. It's still just school, same as it has been. I'm lying education is hell

  17. It's not necessary to promote Julia at all, as even at base, she can do good damage with the Naga tome, it's not even necessary to use her to beat Julius.  Shanan, Ares and Seliph, are capable of beating Julius down, fairly easily, so long as they haven't been stat screwed, and you can always have altena turn Arion into a green unit who can give Julius a good whack on ally phase.
