French teachers for the most part, really don't put a lot of efforts in their classroom.

This is also my experience! haha

for me, my coolest teacher was my trigonometry teacher last year. I was struggling in the class, and she decided to work with me every single day after school to help me understand the material. She went above and beyond every single time I asked her for help. Even today she was willing to write me a letter of recommendation for a scholarship that is due in two days that I didn't find out about till last minute. She even sent it in already!

I had a math professor like this. I mean, I'm a math major, but I still suck at it. I went to his office hours just about every week during diffEQ, and I was so lucky because he happened to be teaching the classes I needed during the next two semester, so I got to take him 3 times. Great guy, awesome in class and out.

Damn, my condolences.  That sounds like a loss not just for the school but maybe even for you a bit.  Sounds like he was a great, engaging teacher, and it must've been quite a sting to your community when he passed.

It was a major loss for me for sure, and totally awful for the school. It's been a few years, but it's still hard. I think part of why it was so tough was because it was so fast. We found out he had cancer early October and he passed away January 3rd. Watching him deteriorate in those last months was really bad. He taught through his whole last semester though (with help from a sub when he had to be at chemo). I guess it goes to show how committed he was to his students! And he never lost his sense of humor.

I didn't mean to get depressing, haha. It's just that he remains the best teacher I've ever had. I'm really glad this forum is here. Teachers are so important and influential.

  2. I had a great history teacher in high school who made a huge impact on my life. He was incredibly funny and great at accents, and really made things stick in your mind. I honestly had hated history for a long time until I had him, and now I love to read history books, even text books!! :D It's one of my favorite things to do, and learning more about history has significantly improved my writing, so I credit most of that to him. He also made a huge effort to make even quiet or hidden students feel like they were a part of discussions and lecture. He used to stand in the halls and wave at people in between classes. Always willing to take discussions outside of class and give additional resources for personal study. He died of cancer my senior year and it was huge loss to our entire school. I had taken all the classes he offered at that time, so I didn't have to suffer through the apparently terrible replacement, but I imagine most anyone who followed him as a teacher would be perceived as terrible just because he was so great.

  3. Eh, I like FE dragons. You definitely can't outright remove them, since they're such a staple of Fire Emblem. I mean, they're basically in it's DNA. And while the dragons degenerating and becoming manaketes is definitely redundant in Fire Emblem, it's fairly uncommon in most fantasy. To me, the Skyrim dragons are the traditional fantasy dragons and I've always felt FE's manaketes were kind of a nice break from that.

I like the dragon laguz in Tellius, but I felt like they were a lot more human than previous incarnations. I mean, they were basically just an isolationist country, and there wasn't any specific lore involving them that didn't also involve the rest of the laguz (not that I remember anyway). I liked when we only got one manakete per game because it added to the mystery (although we need more Bantus). What I'd really like to see is a playable character manakete that's more like FE3/12 Xane. He knows all the history because he lived it, provides exposition where needed, and (unlike xane) kicks serious ass as a dragon during combat.

Actually, now that I think about it a Xane deuteragonist would be so radical, with increased characterization, more plot relevance, potential love interests.... I'm going to stop now.

Now as far as villains, somebody mentioned a dragon-human teamup to take over the world. Love that. I'm a huge fan of the Big Bad Duumvirate trope and it would be fun to watch (AND MAYBE PROVIDE PARALLELISM WITH THAT XANE DEUTERGONIST I'M GONNA STOP). Seriously though, watching that unfold as one inevitably betrays or double-crosses the other would still be more interesting than the traditional cult working to revive the evil dragon for the lulz.

Honestly though, I really wish Medeus had been handled better, because he had a lot of potential to be a really interesting villain. His whole backstory is pretty cool and they could have played a lot more with his desire to protect his fellow manaketes from enslavement, called him out on his hypocrisy during the time of Anri, added to his pain at watching his fellow Earth Dragons turn feral, expanded upon his anger with the Divine Dragons, clarified the whole "Shadow Dragon" thing.... Instead, we get "SO LONG AS EVIL LURKS WITHIN THE HEARTS OF MAN WE SHALL RISE FROM THE DEPTHS OF HELL." Ah well, another remake....

EDIT: As somebody mentioned above, I also like the SoV dragons, flawed beings doing their best to deal with the people who revere them as gods... Although they were actually just gods in Gaiden... And are much more similar to Ashera as far as personality and attitudes in SoV... So maybe still not the best way to handle dragons/manaketes? Or maybe the perfect way to handle them? ?????

If I can jump in and add my own little headcanon, here's how I've put it together. Obviously, it isn't perfect, in part because it's impossible to mesh everything together perfectly, but it's fun to pretend, eh? Hopefully you guys enjoy reading this as a what if, even if you see obvious holes and mistakes.

1: The Sacred Stones timeline occurs first, as there is no connection between it and any other Fire Emblem save Chrom's mysterious catch-all knowledge.
2: Dragons begin to take more interest in the affairs of men, hoping to protect them should another being similar to Fomortiis arise in the future. In Elibe, their attempts at providing assistance and protection are mistaken for attempts to enslave humanity, and the Scouring begins, with some Dragons fleeing to the relative safety of the then-unruled continent of Archanea. Cue the Golden Age of the Dragons.
3: The Scouring is ended by the Endless Winter. Elibean Dragons are forced to confine their power within Dragonstones, and there are repercussions worldwide for millennia to come.
4: The Kingdom of Nohr, forced into a long drought by the effects of the Endless Winter, begins to attempt trade with the less-affected Hoshido, and is refused. After some time and various events, Fates(any path can be inserted here, this is more of a cameo than anything else) happens. Elsewhere, the alchemist Forneus begins secret experiments with strange insects mutated by the effects of the Endless Winter and is eventually sealed away within Thabes Labyrinth.
5: The conclusion of the Endless Winter causes an increase in the world water level. Magvel, Hoshido, Nohr, and the land surrounding Tellius are permanently flooded. Tellius itself is spared due to its relatively high altitude, but the people attribute it to Yune and Ashera and begin to worship them. The Archanean continents are also spared, in part due to assistance from the Dragon Tribes, and the Archaneans and Valentians subsequently begin to rely on the Dragons for assistance and protection. This is the first establishment of the ancient kingdoms of Rigel and Zofia. The Elibean area also survives, but some of the land is flooded as well, such as the uninhabited western area between Caledonia and Missur. Though much of Elibe's flooded land eventually resurfaces, most of it has been changed drastically, the most notable changes being that much of the land of Missur is now the Nabata desert and that the land of Caledonia is now separated from the rest of Elibe by water. The Dragon Decline also begins at this point, though the Elibean Dragons and Tellius Dragon Laguz were mostly unaffected. Thabes is abandoned, though the reasons for this are lost to the ages.
6: Genealogy of the Holy War occurs. Elsewhere, the first idea for a unified calendar is suggested to Mila, and the Valentian calendar starts.
7: The tale of Anri occurs.
    8: SoV Prologue occurs.
9: The War of Shadows occurs.
    10: SoV Main Story occurs.
11: Alm and Celica travel to Archanea and inadvertently break the seal on Forneus' workshop, but are successful in sealing Grima away thanks to the Kingsfang Falchion. Blazing Sword also occurs.
12: Mystery of the Emblem occurs.
    13: Path of Radiance occurs.
14: Radiant Dawn occurs. Ike leaves Tellius for parts unknown, possibly taking his sister Mist with him, and is never heard of by the people of Tellius again.
    15: Binding Blade occurs.
16: Ike arrives in Archanea, and the Unified Kingdom of Archanea is split once more, though it is uncertain if the two events are related.
    (Big timeskip)
17: The seal placed on Grima with the Kingsfang Falchion wears off. Grima assaults the recently renamed Valm. Like the BoL Falchion, the Kingsfang has lost power over the years, but without an equivalent of Mount Prism, the last Alm Dynast is unable to perform the Awakening, the population of Valm is mostly destroyed, ending the Alm Dynasty, and the Kingsfang Falchion is lost to the ages. Grima then returns to Archanea, but is resealed by the First Exalt.
18: The Schism occurs. Among other changes, Tiki moves to Valm as part of the effort to repopulate and takes up residence in the Mila Tree, the last surviving remnant of life on the continent. Elsewhere, Yune and Ashera rejoin and become Ashunera once more.
19: Emmeryn, Chrom, and Lissa are born, and the current Exalt begins his crusade against the Grimleal.
    20: Awakening occurs.
21: To quote Lucina, "The Future is not written."

I like this more than any timeline I've seen before, except I don't know why Alm's line has to end. Headcannon: Wolf Berg is the reforged Kingsfang Falchion passed down the line for generations :D

How'd you do with the VA for Awakening and Fates? I found them distracting. But I'm curious how you felt as the spoken lines were so much shorter.

I didn't mind it... I remember it being weird the first time I played, but I guess it's grown on me since my sister and I mock it so much. (Bonus points for comedy value?) Honestly, I appreciated that it gave the characters voices without making you listen to them non-stop every cut-scene. Again, I don't mind VA in other series. It just feels forced in SoV, I think because Fire Emblem cut scenes are different from other games'. I don't really know how best to describe it but FE gameplay is fairly dissociated from the story (and I know there's an argument against that, but you guys know what I mean (I hope)). ON THE OTHER HAND I loved the audio in the towns and dungeons in SoV. THAT was the part that humanized the characters for me. Not the VA during the story. That just annoyed me.

But apparently I am, in fact, the only person who feels this way!!

I don't mean to be rude, but...

You were not rude at all, and thank you for your reply!

  6. Best: Marth. I'll quote my post from the other Best Lords Thread:

Marth, hands down. I think the Shadow Dragon localization was actually fabulous and goes a long way toward developing Marth's character. "Why do words of such conviction smack of such uncertainty? Not surely, Jagen. Assuredly." Glorious.

Hates to fight but determined to save and serve his people, struggles to keep everyone safe while faced with the hard reality that sometimes, you just can't (Hardin), maintains a hopeful, idealistic, upbeat demeanor in the face of great adversity, Marth is truly the Hero-King.

I think Ike has to come second (PoR Ike is just GREAT and RD Ike is... ok.) but Roy is close.

Worst: Corrin. I don't think that needs much discussion.

And second worst for me is probably Alm, which I know is contentious. I just think he's kind of annoying, esp. in SoV.

I do think there are cons to voice acting in these games...  Though as someone who plays big RPGs with lots of voice acting like Fallout or Mass Effect and skips through dialogue at times, the stuff that bugs you doesn't really bug me.

The main problem I usually have doesn't even come from the direct result of voice acting in the game; I'm typically at least okay with the quality, and even the weird flow breaks for skipping through it don't bug me.  It's due to what it does for the script in general; you sacrifice more content usually in favor of presentation.  You pay more to hire people to record full lines than you do for them just recording ad-libs and using the rest of the budget for script writing.  That can work out, but sometimes it doesn't.  In Fallout 4, your protagonist has less room to be your character; it's more that you can either choose to be good, selfless person or just simply a rude, selfish person.

And I know folks have complained about limited supports (as well as their lengths) in this game, which is undoubtedly partly because of voice acting.  I think apart from that,  it's fine.  It doesn't really hide any of the flaws of the story for me, but it adds some charm to the narrative at times.

I play those kinds of games too and I don't mind there. I think VA is great in Mass Effect, but it's a totally different format from Fire Emblem. It just felt weird in SoV.

  9. Does anyone else not like the voice acting in SoV? Maybe it's just me, but something turned me off about it. Honestly while playing the first time, I didn't like the game as a whole and I couldn't pinpoint why, but after second run with VA off, I really like it.

And it's not like there was anything WRONG with the actual voice acting, more with the fact that EVERY SINGLE LINE is read to you and you just have to sit there and listen when you've already read what they're going to say, or just cut them off in the middle of their sentences and get weird sounds of "Alm, let's--I don't kno-- In that ca--Okay." I know this happens in many other games too but I always liked that Fire Emblem avoided it.

To contrast, I love the lines that were voiced during dungeon exploration. I wish there had been more to that, maybe because you actually have something to do while they're talking at you.

I dunno. Did anyone else feel this way? Am I just weird?

  10. Let's see....

-Binding Blade is the best game in the GBA series

-VA in Shadows of Valentia was a mistake

-Tellius series is overrated (still love it though)

-Shadow Dragon was a great game

-Kris was a good addition to New Mystery (but needed a little refining)

-Gaiden (the original) has the best soundtrack in the series

-Revelation's maps are fun to play

I know the Shadow Dragon thing has been on here a lot. Maybe it's not as unpopular as we think??
