  1. Bitching about how bad you think some advice is really isn't helping anybody. Not really directed to you so much as some others. I do respect what you have to say, because you at least seem somewhat intelligent.

We have contrasting views on certain specifics of the game; I'm just going to leave it at that, as further discussion and argument is really unnecessary.

  2. Cigarettes are 100% detrimental to your health and to your wallet. Plus, you're hurting others by smoking around them.

I honestly don't know what to think about it in terms of the law. Yes, I feel it should be banned, but in what capacity? It's weird to think about cocaine-snorting areas or heroine-injecting areas, but that's pretty much what I analogize the smoking areas to. It's just a socially acceptable drug.

Personal story - my grandpa's best friend in the air force died of lung cancer at a young age, when they were both ~40, and from then on, he stopped cold turkey and has since remained clean. He's now almost 80. My uncle also smoked for 30 years, but has quit for about two years now. That might be why I feel strongly about cigarettes, but regardless, smoking should definitely be illegal. It's just enabling health issues.

  3. Honestly, just do it in the privacy of your bedroom/dorm room/shower/whatever. Everybody has the urge, so don't be ashamed about it. What's shameful is the Kony 2012 guy getting arrested for public masturbation.

Porn - it's just one way people get aroused. I voted neither because it's technology but, hey, technology is everywhere. Nothing unusual.

  4. The fact that you made this post is a good start, because it shows that you care.

Develop good study habits in high school!!! That's the key to doing well. High school work is good practice for what you'll experience in college. I personally like to make to-do lists and keep a calendar at eye-level near my desk so that I can see exactly when things are due. In high school, I only took honors physics, and AP music theory and stats. The rest were standard-level, because I didn't want to put in the effort for college credits, and honors classes are, in all honesty, a waste of everyone's time. So, I developed pretty piss poor study habits. I'm actually supposed to be studying for an exam right now.

Force yourself to do some good work in the first ten or so minutes, and get yourself in the zone. It's not bad from there. Good luck man!

EDIT: I forgot, studying with friends is a huge help!! They can answer your questions and also help to keep you focused (the good ones at least)

  5. lol i don't think you know what "luxury" means. if you are using it in the strict form that a luxury is anything that is not a necessity, then you are merely stating a tautology - marcus is also a unit. the only character in this game that is not a luxury, in the general sense, is hector. in the more specific sense (i.e., if one's goal is to make the game easy), then marcus is definitely not a luxury because he makes the game easy to the greatest degree.

matthew and dorcas blow. oswin is useless on large maps if you're also using marcus and guy kind of blows as well.

you have missed the point again, which XeKr reiterated in his previous post: if the goal is to recommend units to someone, it is not useful at all to imply that every unit, or even most units, are equally useful. we (i.e., not you) have completed our task in suggesting some of the unequivocally strongest units that FE7 has to offer. you have, in contrast, done everything to confound our efforts with flimsy rhetoric.

Matthew gets exp bonus and stealing exp. Dorcas' bases are alright. Guy gets hard mode bonuses. They're not difficult to use, i.e. the entire point of what I was saying.

Hahaha "flimsy rhetoric"? That's literally just words. I'm not confounding anyone's efforts. You're misconstruing what I'm trying to say; if you carefully read what I've posted you'll notice that I've never once said "Marcus/Harken/Pent/whoever sucks" or "All of these shit units will make your life easier" or anything similar. I'm merely pointing out a few positives of some units which I'm hoping is helpful to TC. Being melodramatic about that is actually what's detracting from the topic's goal.

You make a good point about Marcus - however, TC has directly stated that he wants a diverse team which will be able to survive the game. He never even implied that he wants to make the game as easy as possible. He just wants to finish, i.e. complete the final chapter. This Marcus fetish is kind of ridiculous.

You are jumping down my throat because I said some positive things about Eliwood, and are now twisting what I've said earlier to suit your arguments. I never once discredited Marcus's usefulness, or anybody else for that matter. I'm also not claiming my opinion is fact, which I guess is difficult for you to understand. Also, simply filling your posts with sophisticated vocabulary doesn't suddenly add some kind of coherence to your argument.

If you're going to make some kind of claim like I'm intentionally sabotaging this topic, then I would actually try to figure out what I'm saying first.

  6. I've S-ranked HHM using Nino and Bartre

This is a thread for recommendations to a NEW player who is NOT experienced in this game

Not wasting time to use Lowen/Guy/Dorcas for anything other than occasional chip makes the earlygame significantly easier

Cool, they're not that difficult to use. You can divert resources to anyone with halfway decent growths at nearly any time and have them come out strong.

TC obviously has SOME experience if he's completed HNM several times. Also, sure, Marcus is necessary for S-ranking, that's definitely not arguable. TC is obviously not S-ranking.

  7. Marcus is a solid, immutable fact

His existence is non-negotiable and neither is his godhead

The #1 newbie trap for first time HHMing is trying to funnel exp onto anyone other than Marcus pre-Ch 16. Nothing they grow to be is worth the headache of trying to beat those early levels with horrendous units.

Seriously? You think it's a headache to use units other than Marcus pre-ch16 in HHM? Try Hector, Oswin, Lowen, Matthew, Guy, or hell, Dorcas even. Anybody should be able to use these units without pulling their hair out.

  8. Why would he waste time trying to raise a mediocre unit in the hardest chapters of the game (aka early game)?

It's not a matter of playing efficiently or not. The early units of FE7 are TERRIBLE with exception of Hector, Oswin and MAYBE Lowen. The easiest way to play the early game, efficiently or not, is to have Marcus killing almost everything. There are some chapters, like 13, which are a PAIN if you don't do that. As simple as that.

This is exactly the kind of exaggeration I was talking about.

It's really not that difficult to give EXP to other characters while being conservative with Marcus. The only time where you really NEED him is for Guy's group in 13 and to save the village in 13x. Other than that, Marcus is a luxury. Early HHM is, honestly, not that hard.

  9. There are only four characters that do eat hero crests, and there are three hero crests to go around if you don't count the one in Jerme's map. And if you need those three hero crests for Bartre, Dorcas, and Guy, you're probably going to get Jerme's map (and the fourth hero crest for Raven) anyway.

It was more considering ranked runs, where both are excellent. Just a minor negative for Raven that he hurts the funds rank while Harken doesn't, but that extends to a lot of characters, and Raven is certainly worth one of your promotions (unless he gets severely screwed like he always does for me. Base speed at lv15 is really unfortunate)

  10. I've mentioned several times that I don't think he's that good. He is a mediocre tier 1. He is a well-rounded tier 2. He's not that hard to train. A lot of people have overlooked the gist of what I was getting at.

I actually didn't mean to disparage any playstyle, because I do have fun doing those too. I was responding to all of these comments about how inefficient using Eliwood is (even though I somewhat disagree with that) and others, because the goal of this thread is to help TC wrap his head around HHM for the first time.

I mean, everyone here has made good counter-arguments to what I've said. It's up to TC to decide whether or not Eli is worth it for him.

  11. not if marcus kills everything first

it's a terrible tradeoff; eliwood can't promote until chapter 26, which is super late, and at that point he's a worse paladin. no thanks.

If I'm doing efficiency/ranked/LTC/whatever, then I agree; I don't bother with him. However, this is this guy's first time doing HHM. Also, sometimes I like using Eli, so I'm just saying it's not this huge insurmountable impossibility to train and, God forbid, promote Eliwood like everyone cries about.

It's fun to shake things up and use different units; otherwise no one would use trash like Wil once in a while.

Try to have fun with the game sometimes.

  12. He does suck, and sucking is a good reason not to use a character. He's mostly forced on defense maps and it's never hard to keep him out of combat. His effective PRF is good against classes that use Lances either 100% or like 80% of the time, and since he has trouble doubling he still doesn't do well, and then he has to worry about his defenses, which are mediocre at best. Someone (might have been you, might have been someone else) also said promoted Eliwood is like a Paladin, but he's more like a handicapped Paladin because he has no Axes, D Lances only from promotion, and one less move.

Tier 1 Eliwood is mediocre, sure, but look at what I posted on the last page about how he can be raised. It's so easy to train him if you know what he's capable of, and then you get rewarded with a nice tier 2 mounted unit. It's not a bad tradeoff in my opinion. I also think that was me that said that, yeah. I usually think of him as an in-between of a foot unit and a mounted one, but more leaning towards the latter.

Relying on PRF damage isn't really what he's for, it's more of a bonus so that he can damage armors and horses he otherwise couldn't touch, giving him better combat. Also, WTD is not the end of the world. It's not too hard to position him such that he's not swarmed by enemies and in range of a healer. Plus, axereaver armors, sword cavs, and nomads are death fodder for him.

  13. My point is there's no reason to use Eliwood

Saying Marcus > Eliwood so there's no reason to use him is like saying Marcus > earlygame Kent/Sain/Lowen, Marcus > Oswin, Marcus > Lucius etc.

Eliwood's tier 2 game is pretty good (unlike Oswin and sometimes Lowen), so that's one reason. He's forced on several maps, so there's another. He's got a class buster PRF weapon, so there's that. Idk why you're denying more easy manpower just cuz "Eliwood sucks"

  14. I agree. However, Marcus is going south to save Priscilla, and Oswin and Hector aren't enough to keep the cavaliers at bay so that they don't come around and butt fuck the rest of your units. Lowen's not going west to avoid the horseslayer, so he can provide an extra wall to protect Rebecca and Serra, but here Eliwood is very useful for his good damage on the cavs, as Guy can handle the pirates and the fighters take care of the loldiers and peg knights coming at Merlinus, so he's really not needed elsewhere.

  15. Well, Rath has the best promoted rescue at 17, I think. Either way, pally Eliwood still has good ferrying abilities except for that annoying 7 move.

Tier 1 Eliwood isn't bad. Eliwood's got 40 tasty charges of his rapier to use to tank against the hordes of cavaliers in the earlygame, and his fast Hector support grants additional Atk, Def, and avoid to help him do that. Eli is always a valuable unit for me on ch13x, ch14, ch15, ch17 and ch20, tanking cavs alongside Hector (thank god they use swords in ch20) and he does fairly well against the fliers in ch21 since they have shit atk with poison weapons. Eliwood does well/decently against axereavers and magic users in ch22. He's definitely not deployed in either Nabata chapter, but then he can go with Heath and Geitz to defend the Earth Seal village in FFO, taking out all the pirates blitzing the east side. If he's not lv20 by now, the western fort in ch25 will be a piece of cake for him to gain experience. He promotes next chapter and can then deal with the wyverns in the north with iron lances. I don't see why people overexaggerate his mediocre tier 1 performance. I'm not saying it's good, but it's not nearly as bad as everyone says.

Comparing Eliwood to Roy is unfair, IMO - Roy's game is much harder, and his promotion is a few chapters before the end of the game after which he doesn't gain lance access or a horse. Rapier only has 25 uses, and Roy is stuck dealing with OP wyverns and lance cavs much, much earlier than Eli. Roy and Eli both have nice affinities (though Roy's doesn't give Def), but Roy's support options are either mounts that leave him straggling behind or some really shitty magic users. Compare that to Hector, who matches Eliwood's pace and has great tier 1 combat. Roy's Res doesn't ever really cut it for magic enemies like Eliwood's can, but that's because FE6 has those stupid siegers and statusers in Ilia/Sacae that, really, nobody can deal with except for like Clarine and maybe Saul. Worst part is that you can't simply un-deploy him like you can with Eli in HHM for chapters like Genesis.

On paper, they are very similar. Their games are two totally different beasts, though.

  16. Does using DLC still count?

I've beaten Lunatic and Lunatic+ with some DLC grinding, and I'm on like chapter 20 of no-grind vanilla Lunatic. Trying to milk as much level ups as possible is pretty tough when pretty much the only strategy is to rush the boss (Walhart chapter)

  17. For my long-term team, I generally use Kent and/or Sain, Florina or Fiora, Heath, Canas, Pent, Karel or Harken, and one of the two healers, or something like that. Usually end up benching Serra, but sometimes Priscilla just ends up so badly that I promote Serra instead.

Since this is your first run, though, I'd recommend using Raven, both healers long-term, and try using Farina. Farina's so much fun in her recruitment chapter with the monk fort on the eastern side of the map, not to mention that she's the best peg knight combat-wise.

Oh, and use Guy if you feel like it, too, because he gets hard mode bonuses, which can be fun. Also, take a few magic users (on foot) for the desert chapter, which is fog of war in HHM. I really like Canas for that map because of all the powerful Thunder/Elfire mages around, and also because Canas is my personal favorite magic wielder in this game.

I've used shit like Bartre and Erk on HHM, but the results aren't really that satisfying. Fuck Erk's low Mag and E staves.

EDIT: If you wanna use a bow-wielder, just use Lyn. Use the first Heaven Seal in ch26 on her and let her rip on all the wyverns with (hopefully) supports with the other lords.

Speaking of lords, Eliwood is good in this mode - don't let people tell you otherwise just because of his underwhelming performance in tier 1. His combat is not terrible and after he promotes he's essentially another paladin with no axe access, and his stats, while low initially, usually grow consistently and he ends up very well-rounded. Idk, his positives usually outshine his negatives in my eyes. Of course, since this isn't ranked, you have the freedom to use both Heaven Seals without hurting your Funds rank, so I would actually recommend both Eliwood and Lyn alongside Hector.

  18. I've never really been a huge fan of Raven, mostly because his stats are stupidly lopsided and he has shittastic durability, relying on dodgetanking mostly. Not that that's a big deal, because the majority of FE7 enemies have awful hit rates and Raven's got a lot of WTC.

I generally prefer Harken because he has an immediate Str lead, higher con for axes and braves, and much better luck and defenses. And, speaking of axes, Harken comes with a B rank, whereas Raven starts out with E and has to use irons and hands (or steel but nobody wants -6 AS). Raven's sword rank is kind of irrelevant when swords aren't that great to begin with. Oh, and Harken doesn't eat a hero crest.

I like both, I just think that Harken is superior. The only thing that Raven's got over Harken is more time to build supports. Kind of reminds me of Erk and Pent, except that Erk's nowhere near as good as Raven.

  19. i've never seen that before

    ever

and i mine glitch like all the time

the only time i've ever seen something remotely like that when i was memory hacking to see if i could swap phases at will

and then it turned out i fucked up the .sav file

yeah it was the weirdest thing that happened. i tried deleting/restarting all the files and when i tried to restart the epilogue file it erased all the memory -_____- most depressing part is that i'll have to suffer through Eliwood easy for an entire pt.
