The thought of getting him in trouble didn't even cross my mind. I wondered if his accomplishments were better than mine, that is all. And I was going to ask others if they thought his Apotheosis clears were more impressive than all my LTC records. That was my only intention.

I've seen an argument that an ad hominem has two kinds: the fallacy kind (the one I mentioned) and the attack kind (where you just insult someone without necessarily saying they're wrong). So you may still be right. But I've never seen professional philosophers use "ad hominem" in this way, I only read one article on it, so I'm inclined to say that it's wrong to assume there's a non-fallacy ad hominem, as definitions often tend to be decided by majorities and a...

But obviously you can't just say a definition is right if it's useful. I could go around calling red green and confuse everyone because I think it's useful, but that doesn't mean it's right.
Wittgenstein's private language argument points out that we need more than one person to form a a language & I think it's pretty clear that we decide definitions based on majority rule and authority rule.
