  1. I can't really say I really dislike characters at a character level. Even the super villain characters like Julius and Arvis and the loptyr guys from FE4 I can kinda sympathies with. Only character I "hate" from fe I think is Kris, just cause his inclusion offends me on a fundamental level, but even him I can't really say I hate as a character. I think fire emblem has been good with making characters likable. for my most liked, you just gotta look at my profile picture lol. gordin is so meme-able.
  2. I think you've been glancing over what i've been trying to say this whole time. i've never been making the argument that gordon is one of your best units. I'm saying he fills a niche that needs to be filled with no investment. in the early game, he's one of the only units who can do effective damage to draco knights who you meet a lot of. He's by far the best candidate for the orions bolt in chapter 7 with no training required. The stat gains from snipers are so freaking insane that he doesn't even need any growths at that point to be a useful unit for the rest of the game. When talking about if a unit is good, comparing units to each other doesn't matter. (Oguma may be better then navarre, but they are both good so in maps where hero's are good why not field both?) That was never something I was trying to do, you were the one who made it out to gordon v. george argument when it was never a gordin v. george argument. I'm saying the merits listed in the OP means he's a good unit. growths don't matter much in this game. Stat caps are 20 and the enemies are usually very weak. what matters more to if a unit is useful has class effectiveness for a given map. FE4 you have tons of 10/10 combat units with great stats, but they're useless cause they almost can never see combat in the first place. Same deal here, but it's more balanced because there is more map variety. I know... that's why I said a sniper. And you're right, you don't have to use every promotion items, granted that there is no good candidate for that promotional item. You get tons of dragon whips throughout the game, but I only use 2 for Catri and Palla cause after that there really isn't much more candidates for the dragon whips (maybe sheeda but she's kinda under leveled). Gordon is by far the best candidate for that Orions bolt without competition. Horsemen promotion gains sucks and the movement they have isn't very useful until chapter 13.
  3. @7:34 This is a 0% growths ltc, so even though gordins stats are going to be worse then george, this guy is still using him because snipers are just incredibly useful. one of my points was that the exp investment isn't that big of a deal. Even in ltc's you can get hi promoted, the one above has him at level 11, I usually get get hit to 12 or 13 without really feeding him kills. But even if you only train him to level 10, he's pretty good no? But i've never said that gordon completely negates the use of george. I think george is a great unit as well, which is why you should use both of them. I was just saying that if you were to only pick one sniper to use for the whole game. Gordon was the better pick, which I guess is subjective. draco knights have 10 move, so in chapter 9 you don't have to move your units far in the left side to bring those guys to you. In chapter 11 if you place a sniper in deployment slot 8 they can get rid of a draco knight on the first turn without needing to move at all, so I disagree that they're useless. they are also a lot better then kashim here which is why I made the point that chapter 12 it's better to give that orions bolt to him. I think the main draw to snipers is effective damage to fliers, which are plentiful. 7 move and the ability to cross rivers, and actually accurate and useful 2 range.
  4. I agree, but think having bonus xp would have the opposite effect. If I could choose who to give levels to, I would give them to my main dudes to make them kick butt more. I think the best way to encourage players to use other characters is to lower the importance of growths as a whole, and make each class fill a niche that the others can't fill effectively. ideally you want the map design to heavily favor one specific class so the player will bring multiple units of that class even if they don't use them that much. For example big open maps with not much foliage and a lot of siege tombs is the perfect time to field 5 paladins out of a 15 deployment limit. I feel like if we want to keep the modern FE design decision this type of thinking might be on track as long as you have the level design and class balance along with it. maybe have it so that those undeployed gets a level up? I feel like that could work.
  5. i wasn't really complaining... I actually like three houses a lot and appreciate it for what it is. I just made the thread to share and discuss about an aspect of the game franchise that I think is interesting and unappreciated. basically i'm trying to hard sell fe3. To everyone reading right now, please play fe3 it's a 10/10 masterpiece.
  6. oh ok, sry, not really used to forums and i'm kinda new. I'll try to make 1 big post instead of multiple from now on. if there is no reason to make yourself think harder numerically then why would you? yes it's possible to use guys outside your main squad, but the game doesn't give you any reason to and that my problem with it really.
  7. yea u right. Just trying to shed some light on this aspect of FE that I like I think some people haven't come into contact with. btw, do you know of any Mystery of the emblem gameplay inspired gba hacks? I know how to patch gba games but I really haven't been into playing fan FE's but since i've played most of the games I think I can start looking for some to play 😁.
  8. I guess dancers and healers no matter what there stats are will be fine, but combat units for games like the ds fire emblems and three houses make it pretty hard to justify using characters outside of your main squad you've been using this entire time. especially in the higher difficulties. Thracia and fe3 I feel like there are good reasons to use other classes besides the ol' paladin and wyvern knight even if they aren't as good stat wise. Not to say you can't use lower stat units if you want to, but you'll be hurting yourself for it in the long run.
  9. I feel like with hit +40 ignatz makes a pretty good sniper imo. that hit +40 really comes in handy in maddening mode with the big hit penalty to long range. but I agree with your sentiment.
  10. I'm not saying there isn't strategy in the newer games. I'm just saying there is a core design philosophy (being the consideration on who to bring in a given chapter with limited deployment slots) to from the older games that has unfortunately been malformed from pick the best units for the job in you army, to use whoever you've been using the most. My fault for being kinda vague with my post up top, but I'm really not trying to knock newer games. I love every single fire emblem game. It's just the aspects I love from my favorite games seems to not be a core gameplay philosophy anymore, which I find incredibly sad, since it was an incredibly unique thing the series had going for it. Now with reclassing and the focus on growths, the game seems to be much use the characters with the better number more then use the characters that are the best for the job. sorry if I came off as if i'm trying to knock the new games. wasn't my intention. I mostly made this thread to talk about an aspect of fire emblem I love that most people don't really talk about much.
  11. I'm not even saying that ralph would be better then your units up to that point. He's just way better then an mounted unit indoors no mater how good that mounted unit is stat wise
  12. weaker stat wise maybe, but he comes as a hero with 6 move, A swords and C axes. And you really don't need to have that good stats in thracia to beat the game, I think even on the final chapter some enemies have 0 AS. There is much bigger factors to consider then stats.
  13. there are way better units then marty party and dhalsin that mounted units have to compete against indoors. at base, ralph and dagdar who need no investment whatsoever, they come ready to work, would be a better choice then a cav unit with 5 move and e swords no matter how good their stats are compared to them lol. Also I think finn and fergus are good despite the fact they are mounted units, finn cause of his supports with leif and nanna, and fergus because he's a sword knight with a good rank in swords. karin Idk much about indoors cause i've never used her for indoor maps
  14. are you sure you're playing optimally? I mean I can kinda see using unmounted units in fe3, but in thracia unmounted units are SOoooo crappy. 5 move and E swords (if you aren't fergus) really hurts in that game when you got 7 move daddy dagdar over there
  15. to continue, that isn't to say you can't deploy the same units over and over again in these games. You can, it just might not be as optimal or good to do so depending on the map. you can still play the way you want. But to the players who want to play like the way I described above, will only get shafted the more it's like an rpg and I think it's a shame that way of playing fire emblem is being faded out
  16. haven't played the 3ds fire emblems except for awakening so can't comment on that, but I think our definitions of core team may be different. you can never use every single unit, but if you are switching units in or out depending on what chapter it is then it can't really be compared to games where there is literally no reason not to use the same 10 guys for every chapter. even in games where I think they are a lot better having you make meaningful decisions on who you bring, there are always staff users you are going to want to bring. But what i'm talking about, in mystery of the emblem, By chapter 8 I have 3 cavs/paladins who I use for outdoor maps and sometimes indoors. But after chapter 8 there is a desert chapter, an indoor chapter, then another desert chapter, then another chapter that starts indoors but you can mount after you leave the floor tiles. For those 3/4 chapters I don't use those paladins at all, but at chapter 13 I start to field them again. Now depending on what you want to call a core team, these guys can be considered part of a core team because they are my go to for big outdoor maps or they could be considered not part of a core team because I don't use them all the time. The point is that there's no strategic merit benching units for a few chapters in growth rpg heavy games because in the long run you would be screwing them so hard that they would be almost unusable for the rest of the game.
  17. Dude you hit the nail right on the head. This is what I was trying to say but like you said, I kinda got side tracked a bit. But I 100% agree, the bench is a death sentence for a unit in modern fe I can't really think of a way to curve the issue without just straight up lowering growths and stat caps. fe9's bonus xp I feel like is a step in the right direction but I feel most of the time Bonus exp is just used to make your core team even better...
  18. Yea I guess your right. I Just am not a fan of having the game centered around training 10 units for the entire game instead of there being a real decision on who to bring for the chapter ya know. The example I gave could have easily been solved through reclassing as well so wasn't really well thought out on my end lol.
  19. Fire emblem has been straying further and further away from the "strategy" part of SRPG and more into the RPG direction. Before I start ranting and raving I want to get my biases out of the way first. My favorite games in the series are Mystery of the Emblem and Thracia 776. and the reasons I love those games so much more then the rest of the series is for 2 reasons. Meaningful class differences and a 20 stat cap. When I say "Meaningful class differences" what I mean is, for specific maps/parts of maps some classes have better tools then others that would better fit the task you're trying to do causing you to use a valuable deployment slot in order to field a unit of that class. For example take Mystery of the Emblem chapter 14, most of the chapter takes place indoors (meaning mounted units can't use there mounts) so you would generally want to bring foot units, but there are ice dragons inside who ignore defense so you'll you want to bring a unit with a lot of hp as well. Also there is a thief running away outside with a warp staff so you'll want to bring at least 1 high movement mounted unit to get that high value item. this Is why I love the fact that mounted units can't be indoors, not because it nerfs mounted unit, but because it adds another layer of strategy and consideration for the player to decide who to bring along for the chapter. Now some people might be hesitant to bench a unit they're "training" for a chapter, but luckily having stats cap at 20 across the board compliments this aspect of the game. By having a stat cap of 20, it doesn't matter if some units miss a chapter, or maybe even a few chapters! first off enemies are usually very bad in these games, but also training units 20/20 to cap their stats yields little reward to the amount of time you put in. also having super high stats are meaningless if whatever class a unit is in is unfit to deal with the level design. in fe4 there are tons of foot locked units with 10/10 combat that will clear the arena without fail 100% of the time, but that doesn't change the fact that it's very hard for them to see combat in the first place since the maps are so vast and spread out. In new games there is very little consideration on who to bring with you because of the level design. In 3 houses i'm never "oh a desert map, better not field any of my cavs" its more like "oh a desert map, sucks my cavs aren't going to see much combat but might as well bring them cause everyone else who I don't use regularly is to under leveled to use even if they would be useful otherwise." don't mean to sound elitist, but I think the pushing of RPG mechanics over strategy mechanics has made the series lose some of what made it unique in the first place. what do you guys think?
  20. I disagree. I think the sniper class is so useful that having 2 snipers is warranted, and if you don't want 2 snipers his stats should be better in every way then George assuming you're playing with growths. Also don't think it's worth it for kashim to get the orions bolt until you get the one in chapter 12. If you think about it after chapter 8 what is there? a desert map, then an indoor map, then another desert map, then a map that starts indoors with a bunch of flying enemies at the beginning where a high move bow user isn't really needed. the extra move on a bow user isn't really needed yet at that point and since the promotion that kashim gets doesn't help him much in the stat department, I think that Orions bolt in chapter 12 better suits him since after that point you can really benefit having a horseman. feeding those dracos to Linde do help, it's very easy to get her up in levels anyways so wasting time to feed every single one to her never felt like a priority for me. Gordon gets to level 10 extremely easily promoting in chapter 7 even in ltc's so he might not even need those Draco knights to promote in chapter 7 if you're playing normally.
  21. I'd agree under normal circumstances, but you really don't have to use him much before the movement problem is fixed up. and when he is at his lowest move really all the xp kinda of falls in his lap (chapter 3 Gordon doesn't have to move at all to see combat). after the 2 dracoknight chapters are over he should easily be level 10 by then and all you have to do is promote him chapter 7 and boom, you got a 7 move sniper on your hand. I don't see how the 3 pegasus knights and paladins negate a snipers niche in indoor maps and giving powerful accurate 2 range. Also there was this Palla emblem 0% growths LTC where they promoted gordin in chapter 7. I tried to link it in here but I couldn't for some reason lol, but you can find it on youtube.
  22. I don't think people give gordon enough credit it Fe3 book 2 and here is my reasoning. Gordon joins your army at level 5 meaning he just needs 5 more levels to use the Orions bolt you get at chapter 7. In-between chapter 1-7 are a lot of Draco knights that a lot of your army has trouble dealing with (the exception being mages and archers). even if you only use gordon for these enemies he should still easily get to level 10 before chapter 7 the snipers class bonus's are absolutely insane giving plus 5 in both skill and speed, 2 strength and defense, 3 res, and best of all 2 mov. snipers are generalists. generally being useful on a larger portion of maps then horsemen. by the time gordon promotes, his stats should straight up be better (unless he gets stat screwed) than George who you also get in chapter 7. having 2 partia users is a very useful thing. I feel like archers get a deservingly bad rap since in most games since they do suck. but in Fe3, were javelins kinda sucks. having archers are very useful. but what do you guys think?
