  1. So none of that thirty thousand gold was to be seen until they'd traversed a couple continents and back, unfortunately for them. It made sense - that way, the crown could avoid handing out gold to any of the mercenaries that might not make it back, though it was to their detriment. Though, again - from the sound of things the hardest of any fighting that might happen wouldn't be for them to handle, so their odds weren't quite so bad after all. Preparing for the heat, though... now that would be annoying. Strong sunlight and heavy armor tended not to mix well, but that simply fell under occupational hazards. "No questions here... It'll be a long journey. Lots of preparing to be done."
  2. Thirty thousand gold. Per head. For as many of us as there are... that's... probably no small portion of the country's coffers. Before Laniva could put her thoughts together enough to marvel at the payment aloud, the two women walked into the yard; obviously mages, though their attire spoke to... much more than that, really. Certainly, their charms were... pronounced; sufficiently so that for a moment she tuned out of their conversation, only managing to regain her awareness at the start of the important-seeming explanation that followed. ...It was no small mission, obviously. Traveling through Hecatia and Islexia, and then possibly onwards to Lufiria (-or were they to hand these Evokers off to their Lufirian counterparts? She'd have to ask-) would be quite the journey, not to mention the trip back. Still, if what the chief said about them being able to 'level an army' was true, it was unlikely they'd ever come into any real danger... "...I'll do it. I'm no stranger to people being unfriendly to the Clouded anyways, that's no trouble for me. When do we leave?" She shifted slightly, her armor clanking from the small movement.
  3. On behalf of the crown, huh... That'd sure be a far cry from mopping up pirates, if the crown truly had work for them. Still, it seemed a bit of a surprise that the Iron Tigers would suddenly receive such... different work, without so much as a hint that it was coming down the line. The names the man spoke were unfamiliar to Laniva, but it was clear enough from the reactions of those around her - not to mention their flowery names - that these were people of quite some import, especially to be coming here. It wasn't just work he'd mentioned, though; not only did he bear a message, but also an invitation, and that was something more interesting. This wouldn't be some simple job... but it was like to pay well, and if things went cleanly enough then there'd be little to worry about for... well, it would be a considerable amount of time. And perhaps she'd be able to find herself some better equipment on the crown's coin...
  4. Pleasant as the atmosphere in the shop was, Seilan was starting to feel a little idle; after all, there was little he needed here, especially having been through Border so recently as he had. His tome seemed to weigh heavy in his cloak, as if to portend the battles ahead; and at once he felt his skills might be somewhat... lacking, in the face of what was to come. Hmm... as of late, I've done little but support the others. Perhaps I ought to test myself, while the opportunity is yet present... He walked across the shop, to Lucille and Marina's sides. "I've... had a bit of a mind to visit the arena in this town. No need to rush for my sake - we have plenty of time before we leave, I think, so feel free to finish your shopping. You can find me there afterwards." Seilan (prepares to) head towards the arena.
  5. Laniva shrugged and crossed her arms, not fully satisfied with the answer she'd been given. Personally, she didn't share such a faith in Natalya's faith in the Queen, especially for how serious the matter might pan out to be. Still, there was only so much their group might be able to do about the state of things (not having a boat, or anyone worthy of captaining such a vessel, at that), so there was little use in worrying about it. "Hmm... is that so. Well, let's hope she does, then. For now, nothing to it but to take advantage of the steady work we'll be getting, I guess." Glancing after Alvira as she ran off, then to Renais as she moved to excuse herself, she sighed slightly. Seems like it's either too friendly or not too friendly with this lot... well. As long as they keep fighting together as decently as things have been so far, that's fine. She raised her hand briefly in parting, starting to turn away. "I'm going to go clean up my armor, chief, unless you need me for something."
  6. Laniva sighed slightly as she listened to the debriefing. The increase in pirate activity was good news for her, all told; steady work, and simple enough as it came. It wasn't the rather rowdy drunkard who'd taken it upon herself to 'dote' upon the notably shy cleric. Letting her hair loose from its ponytail, she sighed once more. No, the trouble was that her sword had seen but two battles, and yet there was already a notch in its edge, close to the crossguard, where she'd driven a pirate's axe aside rather too roughly for the weapon to handle. She couldn't complain about the weapon, of course; basic as it was, it had still been very kind of Natalya to offer her it to her when she'd responded to the job notice fully armored and weaponless. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that it was rather flimsy... though, considering how unkind she'd been to her training weapons, perhaps the fault was in part hers. She slid the blade back into its sheath and slowly ambled over to the small group forming near their boss. "Question. You said Lufirian ships haven't been seen near the coast in a while? As in, none at all? That sounds like more than just pirates' work, chief. Even if there are more than usual."
  7. It was rather crowded in the seamstress' shop. No doubt some of the others had thought similarly to Lucille to prepare for their journey across the wastes, while perhaps some others were meaning to find ways to pass the time in the small town, somewhat more like himself. Either way, there were familiar and unfamiliar faces both, and as Lucille spoke with the shopkeep he glanced around the shop to see who was there. Marina, Gabriela (who was offering a greeting), and then some more he didn't know; though it was a safe enough assumption that they'd been traveling together. A majority of humans, here, surprisingly enough; he hadn't seen such a scene in... quite some time. It took him a moment to realize Lucille was addressing him, and he offered a short nod as she moved off towards the tunics. "Ah - sure. I'll be... browsing around, for now." Admittedly, there wasn't particularly much that interested him at the moment; he was rather comfortable with his current wear. He was more interested in what the others were here for. The younger-looking girl, apparently searching for a cloak, seemed to be comfortable enough around Gabriela and her... boyfriend (?). Perhaps she was already accustomed to them. They certainly seemed friendly enough with her. A busy scene such as this brought faint memories of merchant's quarters and main streets to the front of his mind; he let them stay there, briefly, before filing them away once more, idly gazing at some traveler's cloaks.
  8. "Alright. It's not easy... for either of you. She understands that, I think." He sighed slightly, somewhat relieved at how peaceably things had gone. A group such as this simply needed time to adjust; it wasn't a regimented group united in their backgrounds, or so on and so forth. Conflict, minor or major, was bound to crop up from time to time. He pondered what he might have needed from the town, but was coming up with little. As far as supplies went, he was doing well enough, and anything more than a personal scale was being handled by the more wagon-wielding among the group. "It's important to prepare for traveling the wastes, so that would be prudent. I passed through on my way to Vaia, so I'll be alright with what I have, but let's see if there's anything for you." Preparation was important, and moreso than that it was time spent not on the march or in battle. Some shopping would do them good; and perhaps he might get some more practice at not forgetting to use 'Angelise'.
  9. He'd been quiet during Lucille and the monsters' short back-and-forth, a little stunned both by Lucille's sudden outburst, and Thesephine's surprisingly measured response. Certainly he was aware that the barb, innocent though it seemed, was a matter of particular concern for her, though he hadn't expected her to deliver so thorough a retort. To some extent, it had felt as if she'd been defending him, moreso than herself; she'd mentioned something about... how hard he'd worked, to which he decided was less important as a matter of focus for now. His mind was spinning trying to figure out how to keep things civil; though before he'd come up with something, Thesephine made the situation clear. She was... fairly understanding, for not delivering an apology, though for one of her station he hardly expected that to have been an outcome in the first place. He glanced at Lucille with a look of concern, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze, before turning back to the Demon King. "Ah, no... nothing in particular, we're fine. I think. We'll be certain to let someone know if... something comes up." He idly pondered what kind of request they could possibly have that would warrant asking Thesephine directly, but came up short. "...Thanks." For what it was worth, he found himself relieved that the Demon King had done some introspection; the thought of dealing with her, upset, was a sour one. He let them leave, waiting until they'd gotten a decent distance away before he spoke again, getting a little closer to her. "Angeli-... hmm, no." Not right now. "Lucille... that was inconsiderate of her. At least she didn't mean anything ill by it... I think." Taking her hand gently, he spoke quietly, just enough for her to hear. "Do you need a moment...?" Nashwa seemed to have wandered off; she seemed well enough attended. Which was good; he was rather preoccupied to be helping her, now.
  10. Border. He'd been here, just a few weeks ago, though at that time he'd been traveling with his group from Hwein. It felt a lot longer than that now, though, with how suddenly things had started happening once they arrived in Vaia proper. The town was still rather unfamiliar to him; when he'd been here last, they'd only made the barest of stops for news and supplies, and the officers had done most of the talking besides. As he idly glanced around, the rest of the group dispersing towards the various homes and shops around town, he heard Lucille calling his name. He gave her a short wave, walking over. "Fly with you and Villkiss...? I'd like that, I think. I've always been a little curious..." Perhaps more than a little, admittedly, and he hadn't really anticipated ever having an opportunity. "It looks like everyone else has this side of town well-handled. Let's head for the other side and see if there's anything of interest there. I think last I came through here, there was an inn near the town gate." "Shall we go, then? Lu-..." He cracked a bit of a smile; it looked like he'd have to get accustomed to it as well. "That is, Angelise?"
  11. He gave a bit of a sheepish smile at her chiding, shrugging slightly. "Hmm... Never was quite as cut out for it as he was. Though I imagine there wouldn't be much negotiating to do, given there was only so much the few left of us could do for Vaia." Well, no matter - all that meant was that there was still planning to do. Jade was certainly seeming quite content between her teasing and how she was toying with their new arrival. As for her question, though... "Let's see... yes, Amera would be a good choice if you think the general is rather... imposing. I can't say I don't understand thinking that, myself." He turned to look where Jade had been looking, pointing. "She's... her, over there, that one; can't miss her. The one talking to... the general." Ah, well, that was unfortunate for Verah. It seemed there would be no avoiding going straight to the top, one way or another. "Good luck to you, then. Don't worry too much." Turning back, he noticed Lucille seeming... perhaps a bit more comfortable than she had a moment or two ago, and glanced back at Jade. "Ah... hmm. Any spare tents in that wagon of yours...?"
  12. He let himself relax a little. Verah seemed innocuous, if a bit rambling, but that was of no real concern. And if she was looking for work, well, he saw no reason to deny her. "There's certainly more fighting for us in the days to come. You might want to ask one of the Vaian commanders if you'd like to join; I'm sure they wouldn't mind. From what I can tell, we've got all sorts here." He turned towards the zombie to answer the part of her half-questioning, half-musing that had been directed at him. "Yes, that's right... We had planned on going to Hwein next. To the capital, to be precise; that's where Coteon has stationed most of their forces." It occurred to Seilan that beyond that they hadn't exactly planned much further than that in detail during their meeting in Tepel. "Beyond that... well, the assault on this force came first. It should be a fairly safe assumption that we'll stop at border towns to rest and resupply as we move, but the particular details aren't yet set in stone." He gave a small shrug. Help would be arriving soon, then. That thought gave him some relief; obviously, he'd been hoping for immediate aid when he came to Vaia. Hearing that they were embroiled in a civil war, and getting dragged into the fighting... well, it hadn't left him optimistic, and some small part of him had worried that the war might drag on. It seemed to have been little cause for worry, after all... nothing else stood in between, save planning and many miles.
  13. "Rival...?" He never said anything about a rival... not that I remember, at least. Not that he'd been home much, if at all, when Dorren was doing most of his traveling. It was rare for his leave from school to line up with his brother's brief stays at home, so he'd never really been able to get a full story out of him. Still, she seemed rather content, even though he'd answered her rather curtly. Perhaps they really did know one another. "Right, it'd have been a poor idea to pay a visit given the state of things... if all goes well, though, perhaps you might have an opportunity soon." An opportunity for himself, as well... Ah, but he was getting too lost in this conversation, and perhaps being a touch rude. Introductions, first. "Ah, Verah. I'm Seilan, by the way. Glad were we able to be of some assistance to you." She was rather cheery for having been imprisoned until recently. Scrying and... peeking. Well, it had been harmless enough for now, he supposed. For now. Unless she started doing something odd with her scrying, there was no reason to intervene, at least. He caught a bit of what might have been apprehension from Lucille, though he was hardly surprised; she'd likely rarely been around monsters, after all, so being on edge was to be expected. Hwein had been plenty diverse enough for him not to be surprised at unfamiliar forms anymore. He was curious, admittedly, but asking directly felt... off the table. "Any plans for your newfound freedom?"
  14. Seilan nodded quietly as he listened to her. Her explanation was a bit... hesitant, though he was unsure whether to attribute that to the stress of battle, or if she was leaving something out. Not that they were exactly terribly familiar with one another; he certainly couldn't blame her if that were all there was to it. "Fighting like this... it's not easy. Before this month, all I'd really done was chase off bandits here and there. And if she came after you, then... well, it's more than fair to have trouble." He paused for a moment to think on what to say next, but in his tiredness someone appeared before them from what seemed like nowhere. The zombie; he vaguely recalled seeing her cart in Tepel. As he spoke to Lucille, he couldn't help but think that she was remarkably thoughtful, not least in comparison to the other Vaians he'd met of late. It took a moment to realize the scrutiny he was under, and another to parse what she'd said; he hadn't expected to hear his brother's name here. "Dorren...? He's... he's doing fine. Just about ready to take over the shop... how do you know him?" In truth, he'd had little contact with home - even before the journey to Vaia, mercenary duties had kept him from much but the occasional letter home, and he couldn't help a a frown and a small pang of worry. If anything, perhaps she knew better than he did...
  15. "It was a lot of healing... The fighting was bad enough that the general collapsed, and, well... things happened quickly, but there was a dragon. I saw it, I'm sure." That much he was certain of, at least. He sighed quietly, glancing over at Taliyah wrapped in the human's hug... "I can't say I expected any of this... that things were so personal. It feels as if the others knew, but I suppose they hadn't planned on telling either of us. I'm... at a loss at what to say to them. If anything." He absentmindedly tugged at the hem of his cloak. "That aside... more exhausted then usual? Did something happen when you were separated from the rest of us?" He couldn't help letting out a yawn, echoing hers. "Ah - sorry about that..."
  16. The fog in his mind felt to be thickening by the moment; he dimly registered Marina's speech as she spoke of their victory, barely catching the mention of Hwein, beginning to fully tune out as the girl hopped up on the table. He was... tired. Idly rotating his staff in his hand, he looked around to see how the others were managing. Certainly, having to perform as much healing as he had would wear out a person - not that he regretted it, of course. It had fallen to him to handle things in that moment, and if circumstances called for it he'd do it as often as needed. More importantly, the general would be all right; Amera's unexpectedly earnest plea had seen to that. It was the mood in the air had unexpectedly fatigued him. Surely had he some foresight, he might've anticipated that a civil war might have led to some more personal conflicts of interest, but as much as the others seemed to have known - if not come to terms with - the nature of Ithraxl's personage had entirely blindsided him. It was difficult to figure out how he felt about their victory; in Hwein, things had been straightforward, clear... He caught himself sighing a bit too heavily, looking around to see if anyone had noticed. Luckily it seemed not; though, sure enough, the rest had sought the company of those they were familiar with, with a few exceptions... Lucille, still mounted and gripping her pegasus' reins for one. It would be for the best for our new recruit not to feel excluded... and I'd rather not be idle. "It looks like things are calming down now... for what that's worth, given the state of things. Are you holding up okay?"
  17. It happened in what felt like an instant; he could hear but little of the words spoken above the din of battle, but what rang out clear through it all were the dragon's roars, both those of rage and of pain. The dragon had hardly appeared before it collapsed and dissolved, hidden once more behind the press of bodies in the corridor. The change in the air was immediately perceptible - and missing was the elation he'd expected from bringing such a hard-fought battle to its conclusion; there was little but anger and grief. He stowed his tome, gripping his staff a bit tighter, hesitating to approach with the tension in the room... What happened? We won the battle... right? So absorbed in pondering the situation was he that he hadn't noticed Nisha's approach - not that it was easy in typical conditions aside - and was caught off guard when she suddenly spoke. "A-ah. Nisha. Right, that's... that's an excellent point. If you're alright yourself, then I should go now. Thanks for... telling me." He was loathe to admit that his thoughts had been other places than healing the wounded, settling instead to briefly thank her for the information before stepping quickly towards the front. Figuring out what had happened - and handling what came after, given how serious things seemed to be - could wait. The end of a battle is the most important time to be caring for the wounded... And duty comes first. It has to. At the very least, until Hwein is free again...
  18. There was what could best be described as a sudden increase in the tension in the battle; unavoidable, he supposed, given the circumstances and those here, though not entirely expected. It was best left to those more appropriate to handle things, however, and for that matter he still had a duty to attend to. Seilan to 18, 21, Heal Asami. "He certainly doesn't lack for presence... but we need only defeat him. Strong as he may be..."
  19. "Thunder lord...?" When the general just performed that? Somehow I'm not so sure... "Well, I won't let another chance be wasted, thank you. They're certainly not having the best of days in there..." Seilan Elthunder (S) Merc 5, again!
  20. "Of course. Be ready, this battle looks to be nearing its conclusion." He noticed the general launching thunderbolts past the walls. Her judgment was likely sound; it would be a safe bet to follow suit... Seilan to (20, 19), Elthunder (S) Merc 5.
  21. "I'm quite well, thank you, Asami. Glad to see you're holding up okay too." He paused for a moment, considering the situation. "They're probably not content to sit around while we chip away at them, no. I suppose what comes next will decide things, for better or worse..." Seilan to (19, 17), Heal Marina. "Feeling alright? We need to be ready."
  22. He winced a little as she thanked him; he'd been expecting a worse outcome, much as he'd have disliked it. He gave a short nod, relaxing his grip on the staff. "The fort... it's well defended, as we'd anticipated, though we are making progress, albeit slowly- ah..." Off she went; he'd hardly began his report before she'd dashed off, but he supposed he couldn't blame her. Her lack of composure hadn't exactly been painting her in the best of lights, even if her skills had been rather admirable. Onwards, then... Seilan to (21, 10).
  23. The Demon King was certainly showing no sign of slowing down, holy guard falling before her as he did. It wouldn't do for her to turn her anger on their own group, though, so perhaps it would be best to put his staff skills to use. I... hope this works. Is this a magically induced rage, or is she just... angry? Seilan to (18, 8), Restore Thesephine.
  24. The draco riders to their rear were making a mess of things, and with the fort's troops advancing on them from the other side, things were looking grim. The Demon King was drawing ever closer to their own group, though, so perhaps they weren't done for yet... blind rage as though she appeared to be in. He could only hope the group at the other side of the fort was holding their own... Seilan to (20, 10), Heal Bridgit.
