  1. I don't really know what you're talking about with symbolic elements. Nor do I think that symbolism is really a good thing, or something to base a video game on. Or something to buy a game for.

All the more reason why I say you wouldn't appreciate some of the more symbolic elements present in the later games. I'm talking the 9 levels of hell in Zelda I, the use of flight since the very beginning (finally brought into a new interpretation via Skyward Sword), the mixing of mythology throughout the entire series, Link's Awakening and its subtle characterization.

Guess what. People buy games in order to enjoy them. How they enjoy them is different for everyone. Some people like the mythology and the thought put into the finer details. Others prefer gameplay and nonlinearity. Everyone's different. I personally prefer a decent narrative and excellent composition in my video games.

I cannot imagine anything worse. What, are Link and Zelda going to sing about their feelings? Maybe Zelda will tell us about her maternal emotions. Maybe Link will angst about having to save the world. Maybe we'll hear about Ganon's bad childhood. Maybe we'll learn about Tingle's dreams for the future.

By "musical narrative," I don't mean a musical. That would be stupid. I'm instead referring to the compositional structure of the music and how it portrays the changes in characterization and fate through chord progressions and tonal harmony. See Wagner and his operas for what I am referring to (sans singing, unless you're really into Zelda opera for whatever reason).

  2. Uh, why? Early Zelda didn't have a story, or much of a story. The story of Link to the Past is pretty bare bones and generally consists of the village elder or various elders providing exposition after each dungeon. There's very little narrative, and the plot never progresses beyond "go defeat Ganon". It's only with Ocarina of Time that we started getting "character development".

If you missed the symbolic elements of the old games, particularly Link's Awakening, then I'm going to assume you'll never care for things like Wind Waker or Skyward Sword. I also think you're focusing on what has changed and not what has remained, even become more significant, in the series. Once again, I cannot stress enough how everyone plays Zelda for different reasons.

If the change to linear game play just isn't your thing, then maybe you'll appreciate the announced intention of less linearity in dungeons. If you feel that the series needs to have less narrative, then I guess that's where our opinions completely diverge and we reach an impasse. If anything, I believe Zelda needs more musical narrative, something that Twilight Princess attempted to do and that Skyward Sword was closer to achieving.

  3. Whoa whoa.. When did the Zelda fanbase become the Sonic one in being unreasonable pricks with their opinions?

When Wind Waker came out, mostly. People have had their own opinions on where the franchise should be going, and it's truly amazing how many different potential ideas can stem from fans.

A large part of it is the series' massive shifts in gameplay and concepts over the course of 25 years. From Zelda I to Skyward Sword, a LOT has changed, even if core ideas still persists (dungeons for example). It's honestly amazing how quickly the fanbase can degenerate to "the series is ruined" with every new announcement of a game.

especially in comparison to FE where everyone instead asks "will it come out worldwide??"

    Also, to Anouleth:

Legend of Zelda isn't meant to be a comedy, or about "character development". Nor is it very dark.

What is the "Legend of Zelda" then? Because I can think of at least three different answers to what it could be or what it should be depending on what you want from the series.

  4. The fact that the Wii U uses both a TV screen and a screen on the controller works too. And if the Wii U has to stick with only being able to support up to two Gamepads, I don't see why two 3DSs can't be connected as two more controllers. Your friends could bring their own gamepads and 3DSs as well.

I'll concede your point, though it would be more convenient for the other players to be able to play the game whenever they wanted on their 3DS system rather than have to wait until they get to their friend's house to use their Wii U.

Either way, I am quite excited for Wind Waker.

  5. Oh. Well, in that case, Four Sword would be going 3D no matter what. The 3DS is all about 3D while the Wii U is about HD, and no game on it has been in 2D yet.

I mean that bringing four players together has always worked more effectively and been more convenient on a handheld system. FSA's double screen system is perfect for the 3DS. And would you seriously spend hundreds of dollars on three more controllers just to recreate the same effect on the Wii U?

  6. Good, my Gamecube memory card corrupted and now I can't play the original unless I don't save. This should suffice until the announcement of the original Wii U title.

I've always wanted to see Vaati and the four Links in 3D! And if Nintendo could figure out a way to have either four Wii U game pads or two game pads plus two 3DS systems, a Four Sword Zelda on the Wii U would be amazing. And if they added Shadow Battle mode or from Four Swords Adventures or something similar, then we could use WiFi to play with up to three other people from around the world!

I'd rather not have a Four Sword game as a main console game seeing as that style of gameplay would work much better for 3DS. Vaati also tends to be at his weakest in character during Four Swords and FSA. I'd prefer if they brought back a different villain and explored their concept more in depth (something they likely won't do, but a gamer can dream).

  7. It was logical, but completely took all the drama out of the reveal.

This. As logical as it was, it truly makes Zelgius' unmasking at his chapter massively anti-climatic in that we were spoon fed the information beforehand. Endgame 2 plays it in a way that, had Ike put it together himself based on his encounters with both Zelgius and the Black Knight, would have been much more dramatic and left many players more satisfied with the information's reveal.

  8. Hrrrrmm... Olivia says "The exalt did me a kindness once."

Does not compute. Exalt is a verb. Confusion. She's referring to Emmeryn, but...(Rather, I think it's Emmeryn...)

I can't really see this verb usage being cleaned up very well... "The Exalted?" "The Exalted One?"

I'm not seeing any archaic references of "exalt" that use it as a noun/title rather than a verb.

  9. Mouse: I'll get to your comments later; can't brain tonight for a proper response.

Good, good! I like it but there's something missing... oh I know what it's missing! EVERYTHING BECAUSE EVERYONE IS FUCKING DEAD YOU BASTARD! YOU FAIL!

The only thing it's missing is logic and hot babes. Next time I'll kill Nergal too for extra rage points.
