  1. The problem of people unintentionally associating members with the image was more problematic than one might think it would be. It wasn't necessarily a barrier, but it was a cause for disorientation because a few people would automatically associate everyone without a personal avatar to that one image. A small minority of members were unable to ignore the this subconscious linking, and a few took to ad-blocking the image in order to avoid the unnecessary and aggravating confusion.

    Edit (2008.11.07):

This problem probably wouldn't exist if icons are only given after a certain number of posts or some other similar criteria so I can see higher ranked members receiving an icon as has been suggested. Fewer people would have it and they'd all likely all have their own unique avatars. The only issue I can see is whether or not people would spam in order to get the icon a couple of days sooner than they otherwise would.

  2. Eh? Well, not anymore. XD
I don't understand how that can be the case, do you have a reference or a source?
Really? 1.5% doesn't make sense to me, please explain it. :D
No problem. As of some time in 2008, the estimated population numbers of China was as follows:

    0-14 years: 20.1% (male 142,085,665/female 125,300,391)

    15-64 years: 71.9% (male 491,513,378/female 465,020,030)

    65 years and over: 8% (male 50,652,480/female 55,472,661) (2008 est.)

In total, that is 680,251,523 males and 645,793,082 females (obviously not to the exact individual). That makes for 1,326,044,605 people total. Divide 680,251,523 by 1,326,044,605 and you get .51299~. That means that just over 51.25% percent of the population is male, with the other 48.75% being female. That also means that I made an error in stating that males exceed females by 1.5%. I apologize, the different is 2.5%.

The percentages are not hugely different if you don't consider those above sixty-five years old. 633,599,043 males to 590,320,421 females for percentages of 51.8% to 48.2%, respectively, with a difference of 3.6%.

  3. That is incorrect. The United States has the highest GDP of any country, the only political entity which exceeds it is the European Union. China has the fourth largest GDP of any country, about a quarter of that of the US. China has the second largest PPP of any country, but it is still less than half of that of the United States. You can check this with statistics from the CIA World Factbook or the International Monetary Fund.

It's also worth noting that males exceed females in China by about 1.5%....

  4. There are a lot of metaphors that hint at what it's really about. If you watch it more closely, everything in the show will suddenly fall into place. I'd like to watch it again, but I don't have television access at the moment.

  5. I used to watch my friend play games on his SNES (the only game I remember watching is Earthworm Jim but there were a couple of others), and then I played some games with him when he got a Nintendo 64. I wasn't allowed to have my own console, but I was able to get a Game Boy Color woth Pokemon Yellow for Christmas by begging madly. My mother eventually let me get a GameCube provided I pay for it (this was when I was twelve I think). At about that same time I started to get my father interested in StarCraft (a game he let me buy probably because it was cheap). Playing games became perfectly acceptable in both households after that.

I dumped a lot of time into Pokemon Yellow (and subsequently the other generation one and two Pokemon games) and StarCraft when I was a kid because I didn't have many other games. I still play both games, they have a very strong and personal nostalgic pull.

  6. This website is clearly biased, but it gives a very concise rundown of the justifications endorsed by at least some of the people who supported the amendment.

Some peoples' religious perspectives, as stated by Fireman, most probably played a notable role in influencing votes. This is a bit of a tricky issue because marriage is not strictly a religious or a legal institution.

I know that this isn't directly on topic, but I personally disliked the picture used in the linked to news article. I think it unlikely that the child in the picture understands the significance of the sign she's holding. Regardless of the position being supported. I consider that blatant extortion on behalf of her parents for the furthering of a political agenda, I believe her naivety is being exploited.

  7. I'm not sure if the more recent posts in this thread are sarcastic or not, but I think you should be crying or in excruciating agony. You may never see art like this or this in your lifetimes.

This is the message written on the main page. If anyone here knows Japanese, it would appreciated if you could make a quick translation (appreciated by at least a couple of people here, haha). I certainly don't have anything more than a superficial grasp of the language.

    2008年11月よりサイト内容が変更となりました。

    展示物は撤去し、サークル情報メインのblogとなります。

I read it as saying: "As of November of 2008, the content of the site will be changed. Exhibits (artwork maybe?) on the site will be removed, as will the [main circle of information of the blog - that's a direct translation because I don't really know what it means]." That's obviously a pretty bad translation, and I don't really understand the second paragraph very well. It seems that old links will no longer work. I don't know if the site is being changed or removed entirely, or maybe just moving to another domain...?

  8. One of Roy's biggest problems is that he doesn't promote until very late in the game. He's not a bad character in and of himself. I don't know how much you already know about the game or whether you'll be referring to a guide (you may already be aware of this information), but don't overuse any legendary weapons and keep in mind that the Assassin class did not exist before Fire Emblem 7.

  9. Assuming nothing troublesome happens which delays the process (like during the 2000 election), about how long would it be before an announcement of the election results can be expected?
