  1. Circular reasoning has its place: Sometimes it is only on the second circuit of an idea that the way towards greater truth becomes apparent.

The only thing that is self-evident is that truth is not a lie, unless you mean something different from what I thought by the word "lie". I can't help but note that you still have not made any effort to define your terms. Confucius touched on this issue in his Analects, and practically every great analytic thinker since has disagreed with you, but I'll keep this simple so you understand. The dichotomy between truth and lie is ingrained even on the very structure of the human brain. If it weren't, how could polygraph machines be effective?

Yeah well, you be that way... meanie.

  2. This sort of blind rejectionism disappoints me. I would have thought that you were beyond this. From the substance of your post, it is clear that you've been reading my writing with the veracity of your own argument and the falsity of mine already well-established in your mind. Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that you have done nothing to hide this impression.

The issue with this approach is that your working definition of truth is likely to be different from mine. It is possible to logically define truth, but there are several ways to go about this, which of course lead to subtly different definitions. The key word, though, is logical positivism. Without going through the process of creating a definition of truth which is acceptable to both of us, we can make the same argument against each other and not even know it. I can help walk you through the process, if you need it.

Engage in your positivist fantasies all you want--it is self evident that your "truth" is a lie. You construct fortresses of your own circular logic and then insist that you have somehow found "the way". The universe can't be reduced to a series of abstract conceptions--everything about your "truth" kills what is the soul of life. You seek to deny and shut out the truth of existence with your small minded quibbling about degree and definition. Life itself rebels against the tyranny of your pettiness.

  3. It was an integral part of my argument, and I am sure that any here with skill in languages will understand its relevance.

Exactly the sort of Modernist arrogance that incenses me. Can't you even see past your own nose? You're all so enamored of your own intelligence its disgusting. This discussion is over.

  4. Facilis descensus averni.

Untranslated Latin? Funny, for someone who claims to be so critical of the Modernists, you engage in such Modernists pastiche. If there's one thing in this world I cant stand its the kind of hypocrites like you on their high horses, who try and play the world like a fiddle. Disgusting. While I appreciate that you know your Goethe, I'm not sure you actually understand it.

  5. Moved on to the Analytic Philosophers over break. I'm reading Wittgenstein Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and Husslers Philosophie der Arithmetik, as well as a slightly unrelated re-reading of Goethe's Faust, Part I. What a classic story--I can't just be help blown away every by the sublime beauty of Goethe's verse. There's just something so moving the way he has with words--with such skill does he craft the torment and spiritual void of Faustus's existence I'm entranced every time.

  6. You could try out the DS remake of Dragon Quest VI if you haven't already--one of the greatest JRPG's ever, IMHO. Also, seconding the recommendation for Fallout: New Vegas (it's not really an FPS at all). You should really look for one the radio extender mods, they give the game a lot more life. If you haven't already you should also play KotOR 1 and give II chance, it was prepared to be one of the greatest CRPG's ever, and you can kind of see it if you use one of the content restoration projects, which are really good.

Also: Planesacpe: Torment. Play it. Now. No one can properly call themselves a Role Playing gamer until they've beaten this. Some other good classics, inculde Arcanum, the first two Fallouts (III is utterly missable), and Baldurs Gate I and II, all of which you can get dirt cheap (and on sale) on GoG.

If you like 4x's, you should also really cheack out Masters of Orion I and II, which they have on GoG as well.

  7. Don't really care all that much either way, but I tend to like Real Robot shows a lot more (Macross, Garasaki, Patlabor...) so I'll go with that. I never thought it was that entertaining to watch big machines take thawks at each other, but the "real robot" genera holds things more to my taste.

  8. See, that takes all the spontaneity and serendipity out of it for me. For me role-play is about act of group creation, an exercise in shared imagination, and half the fun is just being there. I feel like such a mechanical system just turns it into a just a game, like it was postal diplomacy or something like that. Some people can still dig it, but I don’t. Good luck, though.

  9. But you know a lot of people would still support it.

Culture warriors and nanny-staters perhaps, but under the current definition it wouldn't pass any legal test of constitutionality, and its obvious enough that anyone who believes in free society, weather they have a leftist or rightest interpretation of that, would be in clear opposition.

  10. That's not surprising really, I mean if this were the US I'm sure you rights waving idiots people would be waving their rights around to block such a bill. "I have the freedom to express myself, I loved my sister as a kid and want to make a show about a horny guy wanting his sister" or something to that extent. While not in those exact words, I'm sure someone will start waving rights around in Japan as well.

Just to be clear, in the United States this bill would be flagrantly unconstitutional, so people would be angry with good reason.

  11. I'm not supporting censorship, but it seems like this development will do something toward busting the misperception a lot of Westerners have of Japanese as a privately countercultural nation. Though I've never been to the country myself, my understanding from the stories of those who have is that this sort of product appeals to almost as narrow a niche there as it does anywhere else--the only difference is that the Japanese scene developed earlier and has been more influential.

I think the scene will ultimately survive with small losses, too, although the opportunity for mainstream products to blend into softcore anime porn will certainly be curtailed if this new regulation is enforced at all. But is that necessarily a bad thing? Personally, I heard too much of homely fourteen-year-old virgin girls cooing over the cuteness of little boys sucking each others cocks when I was in high school and held an interest in anime to be much enamored of that sort of thing.

Frankly, I don't disagree on principle either--at least in terms of the 18+ nature of certain deviant sexual acts, but from what I understand, the law basically has no limits both in terms of sexualized and criminality, and basically covered anything that isn't strictly G rated. It doesn't just potentially mean the end of primetime lolicon (stuff already 18+ isn't affected) but things like EVA, and even something like Baccono. And not only would that be no fun, but it would basically mean the end of the industry as anything but a producer of children's cartoons and hardcore henti. Of course, I don't really understand all the specifics, no even what exactly all of the prohibitions entail, so basically my opinion on this is wait and see. For all we know now it could even turn out to be a blessing in disguise, forcing the industry to end the cycle of Otkau pandering and produce some quality shit again.
