  1. I don't think those empowerment/disempowerment stereotypes are in any way similar. The empowered male character reflects the patriarchal nature of the society and gives into the idea that men are stronger. While the female stereotype group gives way to incorrect notions about women in society. It's not about whether individuals know they are different than these characters; it's that these characters exist in mediums over the course of hundreds of years that reinforce gender roles and stereotypes. Video games are just another form of media in which this problem exists. Additional, neither gender knows that the characters shown are things that they aren't. If we are talking about video games, they are often consumed at the formative stages of one's life, so children don't necessarily have that basis of what a male or female is. Racism (or sexism) can be defined broadly in two ways really: 1) discrimination to others on the basis of race (or gender). 2) systems or structures in society that advantage a dominant race (or gender) over all others. So in the first case, all individuals may experience in their lifetimes. While in the second, by definition, only oppressed groups can experience it. So "split groups" exist to combat these systems of power, but not at the expense of other groups. Any group that does that really ignores the spirit of what they are trying to accomplish. And a true feminist group aspires toward a more equitable society.
  2. Crono dies in Chrono Trigger and you don't have to revive him. Characters can die all the time in games, especially RPG's. They just can't die permanently. I don't see anything in that particular scene that would need to be censored, since they die from a magic attack. South Park: Stick of Truth specifically mentions it as inspiration. But elements from the game do take their cue from it. The whole boy fights in a regular world is used by games like Pokemon. It is the first of the modern surrealist adventure games. Other elements include no random battles (so you can avoid them), auto-attack, and even the way you lose health when you attack. The self-aware humor can be seen in both the Mario and Luigi and the Paper Mario series. I brought up Earthbound because it's cult status was unaffected by its lack of sales. But Earthbound doesn't have a groundbreaking event like FE4. I have to agree with Rehab. My point was I think that the end of chapter 5 (battle of belhalla) was like nothing we had seen in gaming prior, and I believe it would have been a classic moment of gaming. The game doesn't suggest that you are going to die midway through the game, so I think it would have been a complete surprise to gamers. Everything about this game's plot would have been groundbreaking. But especially the part where the game tells you essentially that you're fight against evil has been all for naught. "And so, an era had come to pass. Grandbell's disturbance, stemming from the campaign from Isaac, led one young man into a disastrous fate. Along with many other sorrowful tales, his story was lost to the world..." Imagine feeling that moment in 90s.
  3. I was asking about killing all the main characters. I think it's humor and approach were definitely influential. It's a parody of the RPG genre, because it does not use a steampunk or medieval setting. And things like status' effect were being turned stoned, but rather things like loneliness. As far as classic games go, it is very well remember for its humor and parody elements as well as gameplay. It was released after, but the except part is the big difference. It's not basically the same thing because Sigurd (your main protagonist) actually dies. There is no prior game I know of where the main protagonist fails in such a public way (along with the rest of the group).
  4. It would be great to have a game where you play as both the antagonist and the protagonist. Since it's war, both sides are actually justified in their reasoning and neither said is wrong nor portrayed as overly "evil." But one side is definitely more antagonistic. It's just two competing nations with different interests. And they never join up just for the final boss. Instead, you choose to specifically follow one side of story about 1/3 of the game in and face off against the other side in the final battle of the game. I also would like a main female protagonist without a male counterpart, like Ike in PoR or Marth in SD. It would be great if she wielded lances but swords would be fine as well.
  5. IS does not make monetary decisions. It's the larger company of Nintendo. So if Nintendo saw renewed interest for a series due to a few character in Smash (who would not have been featured in FE4), it's perfectly reasonable they could give the series another chance. Namco flips back and forth all the time with the Tales series. But I think I'll change the topic title because I really wanted to talk about the Battle of Belhalla.
  6. SIlver is the best rival because he's actually a bad guy. He actually steals the pokemon. It makes you really want to defeat him, more so than any other rival.
  7. The bottom point was the reason I started the thread. I should have made that more clear. In terms of game impact, I would look beyond sales. Look at how Earthbound did (and was received) but with time its influence and tone is undeniable. I'm saying that the death of the main characters in chapter 5 would have had an impact on gaming. One bad release doesn't ban a series forever. Just look at FE 11 and then how we got FE 13 still. Dragon Quest stop being released in the US with the SNES, but eventually made it back. The Tales series is another example. You also have to consider the fact that FE7 was designed specifically for Western audiences. The release of SSBM with Roy and Marth could have still led to another international release, especially if a game was specifically designed for Western audiences (like FE7 was)
  8. LoZ series winning constantly is slightly better than having a yearly coronation for Link. Although I always vote for Link, so maybe I'm part of the problem.
  9. I think they got tired of Link winning. They hold other contests like Best Game of the Decade, Best Rivalry when they are not running the Character Battles.
  10. I'm not sure about its popularity and that really wasn't what I was asking about it. The game could have been made easier as just about every other Fire Emblem title has been made. And for sure the incest stuff would have been cut out, so I don't think that's what anyone would have been discussing. And for those saying that FE7 was only popular because Marth and Roy, FE8 sold well too. In terms how it would have been critically received well. I have no doubt it would have ranked well on top SNES lists. You just have to look at how it does on Super Famicom lists in Japan. I was just specifically referring to the plot point where all the protagonists essentially die or have their fates become unknown, especially Sigurd. If I was playing that as a kid, I think that would have been a remarkable moment for me. I don't recall any other game essentially killing off most of the protagonists with no way of bringing them back.
  11. The problem with underrepresentation is in my sig. But agreeing with Samias above, women are used as plot devices far too often. Although I love the Zelda and Mario series, I think its about time they retire the rescue the princess trope and try a different method of storytelling (like Super Mario 3D World).
  12. (spoilers ahead) Do you think FE4 would have had a major impact on gaming due to the events of Battle of Belhalla at the end of Chapter 5? I don't know of any game within the 16 bit and 8 bit eras that basically killed of the many of its leading protagonists (including the main one). Although FE isn't that big a series, I still think it could have been held up high due to the fact that FE4 would also be on lists as one of the SNES's best games. The death of Aeris was a landmark moment for gaming, and I think this event could have been too. What does everyone else think?
  13. Ishtar by far has the best design in FE4. Her design holds up quite well today. The same can't be said for others.
  14. My favorite theme in the series overall is End of Despair from Fire Emblem 4. I think FE 10 is the best version of the main theme and FE7 has my favorite recruitment music.
  15. Character Battle V: Samus (Battle of the Sexes, Snake won for Males but lost to Samus) Character Battle VI: L-Block Character Battle VII and VIII: Link Last one was in 2010.
  16. 1) Yes its difficult enough. Even the games with grinding become harder if you choose not to. 2) I think this and Advance Wars are the only strategy games I play. I think AW is harder. I would say it ranks on the normal side when it comes to playing on the default setting for most games. It would probably be a 6 on the default setting. 3) A 6. On the hard modes (aside from Awakening), they are usually an 8ish. I find Awakening's Lunatic Mode impossible without DLC.
  17. how is 100 plus a big deal? this thread has over 6000 views. What more surprising is that with so many polls, many members just look and not vote. This poll breaking 100 is more of a reflection of the lack of voting on Serenes Forest rather than a question of the validity of the poll.
  18. Voted for Lucina. Tiki hair color is the best. Manakete Morgan is awesome!
  19. The tellius saga had a two magic triangles: wind fire thunder and light dark anima. And the each of the anima had a greater effect on different certain laguz. Too many layers. Just stick with the GBA system. The problem is the way IS balanced it or lack thereof.
  20. Without it, there was no purpose in having different magics. And there was no light magic.
  21. I always use a completely different build each time but my go-to favorite builds are: Female Build:03 Face:05 Hair:05 Hair color: 05 Voice Female 3 I used this one for Sharla and Mariko. Spouses: Chrom Male: Build: 01 Face: 04 Hair: 01 Hair Color: 07 Voice: Male 1 I used this for Link and Shulk. Spouses: Lissa and Cordelia
  22. out of all the unrevealed returning franchises without a rep we have: Mother Fire Emblem Yoshi Wario Including retros, there is also: Game and Watch R.O.B. Ice Climbers. I think we will get one of the four unrevealed franchises as our reveal. My bet is that we get a Fire Emblem newcomer as the revealed starter. I think Wario and Yoshi will probably get their reveal first. As a member of the original 8, I think Yoshi should get his reveal in september.
  23. Play Time: 567:44 I feel like shadowofchaos has a pretty high count.
