where some group of people want to kill you, and you have to put traps to catch them or something. you can't kill the people who want to kill you, only capture them with clever plans and stuff.

Eh it's hard to come up with new and original ideas when almost everything's been done before so don't feel sad about it >_>.

Apparently I could "invent" a game called the Oregon Trail, and it'd be completly new to you guys >_>

apparently not all of us spend all of our time playing videogames. have you thought of that?

Eric Zimmerman came up with the Game Design Challenge.[1] "The idea of the challenge, he said, was to give everyone a sense of the process behind game design, and to attempt to get everyone thinking about new kinds of games." No actual game needs to be built, just designed. The goal of 2nd annual Game Design Challenge was to created a game based on Emily Dickinson. It was won by Will Wright who designed an Emily Dickinson personality simulator contained entirely on a USB flash drive. The personality would interact with the player by sending Instant Messages and email. The goal was to maintain a stable relationship and avoid the two extremes of romantic obsessed with the player or suicidal depression. The first occurrence meant constant interruptions when using the computer. The latter occurrence allowed for the simulation to delete itself. The 3rd time, the task was to create a game worthy of a Nobel Prize. Harvey Smith won with his PeaceBomb game. It would utilize wireless devices to organize flash mobs to engaged in random acts of charity. Thus far, Eric Zimmerman has always ended the challenge by indicating that all the contestants ideas could really be made into a game.

The Wild West scenario in Live-A-Live had the same concept, ending with whatever was left of the boss's gang fighting you.

The Home Alone games did something similar to this. At least, based off the first film not very well though...

Going retro what about Lode runner. Your only attack option is making holes and you can temporarly trap the enemies in them.

Though thinking about a lot of the really old arcade games you never got to kill the enemies. Pac-Man Ghosts regenerated and the closest you get to killing Donkey Kong is making him fall down most the screen and as Donkey Kong Jr. shows us he didn't die.
