The first was made when the manga had just begun (volume 4? I don't remember). So, it expands on the early story of the manga and follows a completely different direction. The second one follows the manga closely, and is currently running. They're independent series - however, the start of the second series is somewhat rushed (since it was competently shown in the first anime already, and most of those watching FMA2 saw FMA1) so it can get to the "new" bits fast. But everything else I have is either Shonen or Shonen-Ai I should probably mention that a straight guy was the one who hooked me on Shonen-Ai, or specifically Gravitation.
