I'm not a fan of random encounters or grinding, but I could take FFX. The encounter rate in FFX seemed pretty bad to me. I don't remember much about the calm plains. And speaking of Ivalice, Vagrant Story was my favorite game set in Ivalice. It had a rare combination of good and original gameplay and interesting storytelling.
