I can master the grammar more or less but if I have to write longer textes, I'll confront my own limits. As for lyrical textes or poems in a foreign language I normally don't understand them. German is one of the hardest Indoeuropean languages to learn imo because of the grammar and the fact that nouns have to start with a capital.
