I haven't read it in detail, but basically Frey (the canon decoy) was seriously beaten up, but didn't die. However, he lost his memory and it was only after Shadow Dragon that he regained his memory and returned to Altea. He was left to die but somehow survived, but had a memory loss for some time. Once he remembered who he is though he returned to Altea as if nothing happened.
