The Nintendo Wars series is a sister game to Fire Emblem, both from the same developer, Intelligent Systems. That game is Advance Wars - Days of Ruin (or, Dark Conflict if you're in the Euros).

If you haven't given the series a try, you might like it. I'd suggest you start with Advance Wars on the GBA ^^

Do you mind listing all the titles for that series? It looks fun.

Famicom Wars (NES)

Super Famicom Wars (SNES)

GameBoy Wars (GameBoys)

GameBoy Wars 2

GameBoy Wars Turbo (These three games are from a different developer sadly... they're not quite the same, and change to a hex-based grid).

GameBoy Wars 3

Advance Wars (GameBoy Advance)

Advance Wars 2 - Black Hole Rising (GameBoy Advance)

Advance Wars - Dual Strike (DS)

Advance Wars - Days of Ruin / Dark Conflict (DS)

There were also a smaller series called Batallion Wars on the GameCube and Wii, which are more like RTS games than turn-based strategy. I suck at those, so I never got very far... ^^;;

The first half of the series is mostly only gameplay, no real story. Campaign Mode was added in GameBoy Wars 3, but it actually really started to get good in Advance Wars on the GameBoy. It's also the first game in the series to get localized--it's very good reception with English players was a big incentive to bring over Fire Emblem, which has similar gameplay and style.

Sadly Japanese players seem to not be as interested in the series as international players are... the latest game was tailored specifically for overseas players, and the games in Japan have had their release dates pushed back beyond even the American or European dates. Hopefully another one is in the works on the 3DS... :)
