Snowy_One
If you ask me, the problem with Est-types is two-fold. 1) Despite their superior stats, they are unlikely to be significantly stronger to the point of training them being worth the effort. 2) Their low bases make training them difficult at best. My 'suggested' fix for this is actually pretty straight-forwards. Paragon/Galeforce + required. Making them required means you can't just opt to shove them off the team. Trained or not you HAVE to put up with them. Paragon makes training them easier due to more EXP, and Galeforce makes it so that, after leveling them up, they will have something to set them distinctly above the norm. The Void
It's a bad archetype. It should be removed, like their mirror-image, the Jeigan. It can't be tweaked?
Anouleth
It can't be tweaked? No, it can't. Every Est is unique and has their own particular qualities. So in real terms, IS has been "tweaking" Ests forever. And yet, they've never even managed to get them past the "okay" stage, except in the one game where you can completely ignore their weak start by dumping tons of BEXP into them. And the reason is, because like Jeigans, they're very binary. They're extremely weak until they reach critical mass and then become extremely strong. In comparison to Jeigans who are extremely strong until one day they quickly become extremely weak, forever. Just as no Jeigan has ever been bad, no Est is ever going to be good. Baldrick
IS is simply catering to a different subset of the fanbase when they design Ests. It's rather short-sighted to claim it's impossible to tweak them past the "okay" stage - when PoR came out, one might have claimed it's impossible to make a promoted unit an Est. As long as it doesn't reach the point where you must use a unit or die, there's nothing inherently wrong with binary units. If you put effort into raising a weak unit, you get one of the strongest units at the end; conversely, if you take the path of least resistance, you'll find the going tougher later on. #yogowypi If you want to make these units less binary, it's simple. Just adjust the way level difference affects exp gain, and normalise the growths. Est doesn't need high growths if she can gain a lot of levels extremely quickly, and once she's caught up she won't accelerate as much. Similarly, Jeigan can have growths good enough to allow him to keep up later on while not breaking the game if he doesn't gain experience for a while. Use of skills such as Elite, Underdog and Mercy can affect this balance further.
The Void
You could also lower the growths for various playable characters and go with a Shining Force approach to growth.
