I assumed they are similar to siege tomes; only difference is I get crit'd by ballistas all day. Either I'm lucky/unlucky or weird string of RNs. I guess it doesn't really matter, AI is behaving how I want it to. Edit: Okay, can confirm seige tomes can definitely crit. Minerva just got crit.
