i also really like what tolkien does with language someday

like túrin calls himself turambar (which means "master of doom") and then when he dies nienor says to him "o master of doom, by doom mastered!"

or when the witch-king says "fool, no living man can slay me" and éowyn says "but no living man am i"

they changed that to "but i am no man" in the movies which just sounds a lot less good tbh

this is upsetting me not as a tolkien fan but as a linguist

me several years ago, hearing they're going to make the hobbit movies: "oh no they're probably going to butcher it also the fact that they're going to make it into two separate movies just sounds like they want to milk the whole thing for money"

me a while later, hearing that they're actually going to incorporate background history from the appendices of the lord of the rings and stuff to expand the story with the battle against sauron that was going on in mirkwood at the moment: "wow they're actually taking this and the whole lore seriously... oh man this is so EXCITING"

me a while later, when sister asks if i wanna see the first hobbit movie: "I'M SO EXCITED"

me, watching the first hobbit movie: "WHYYYYYYYYYYY THIS BITTER BETRAYAL"
