Actually I've been using the Jizo Statue-make-not-die thing with the Magical Mallet and focus more on dodging shots for the most part, than anything else. that a good strategy or...? >_>

That works pretty well for the most part, especially if you try a spellcard for the first time and don't yet know what's coming.

Some spellcards, however, are easier to beat with other item combinations, or even just with the doll (or sometimes camera) instead of the mallet as the sub item.

And make Adol Momiji because she's the only one that has a sword and shield from what I'm remembering right now

I've been playing so sloppy recently, it's not even funny, it's pretty infuriating actually. So many decent runs just falling completely to pieces as the first mistake shatters my confidence and shit spirals out of control.
