Which seemed to Touhou somehow with Seiga and the Aki sisters Touhouing on me.

You get a Game Over like normal. The only way to continue in such a scenario is to beat a boss' non-final spellcard and have the purple spirit dropped be enough for the next extra life (which in fact happened to me once on Lunatic).

the only spell where you can damage the boss while she has no collision hitbox is Parsee's midboss card

Actually, Byakuren loses her hitbox during one of her non-spells (the one where she moves around in a large circle, iirc) and never gets it back. You can move through her and then sit on top of her during Devil's Recitation without dying. I distinctly remember a video of it.
