2017 NFL Playoffs - Super Bowl LI Confirmed! Atlanta Falcons vs New England Patriots!

I felt like Frank Reich will rob us of either a Superbowl or playoff run.

Looking at the preseason game it appears our Special Teams unit improved a lot in terms of blocking, gunning and covering kicks. Our run defense is still a problem. We had a lot of snaps with a starting or rotational guys but didn't put starters on the D-line which could attribute to the fact our run defense appeared abysmal during the game.

Back to Reich his play calling is incredibly uncreative and seem incredibly basic.

We have the talent for both Top 10 Offense and Defense.

I'll give Reich the benefit of the doubt for his 1st year since Whisenhunt had these advantages:

  • One of the best pass-catching RBs in the league who also excels at picking up a blitz
  • A manageable running game for 14 games to give us often 3rd and short while keeping defenses honest
  • One of the better Centers in the league who started for 17 games
  • A great rookie WR with not much tape on him

A good OC like Whisenhunt would be able to adjust to the largest challenges the team has to overcome and cover to a football team. He adjusted his scheme to his personnel he schemed around one terrible linemen every game (which he did well) and adjusted his scheme to benefit Ryan Mathews' talent as a threat to the outside.

Again we still have to consider we went through 5 Centers and one of the worst group of interior linemen. The Browns imploded a bit into themselves when Alex Mack was lost for the season.

Of course Malcom Floyd is still better than Vincent Brown in terms of current talent, and teams now have tape on Keenan Allen this year.

But let's not talk about the negatives.

Frank Reich's playcalling on Thursday was glorious. He called really good plays and made the right choices. It's either he is trying a new scheme or his scheme really does not work with missing parts.

Even though he did Danny Woodhead up the middle in one play that resulted in a TD. HE KNEW HOW AND WHEN TO USE IT. They were in shotgun formation suggesting a short pass. But Rivers executed it well like a play-action and Chris Watt did a good job in making a very important block despite Orlando Franklin blowing his block up.

I really hope his play calling has improved from last year since he did a bit more with Dual TE sets and more Flex sets which I really liked.

I wouldn't judge a dude's playcalling in the preseason, and the first game of anything - preseason, regular season, even postseason - has this tendency to be really weird because you have no idea what to expect. Lower string guys getting the yips, coordinators just trying a bunch of different things out to get a talent evaluation, etc. It's all about playing around with things in a real game setting, and the W-L record is largely irrelevant.

Which is why you sometimes hear shit about how one player is good in the preseason and one is not. ie Ryan Leaf vs Peyton Manning. Now I don't claim to have seen the 1998 NFL Preseason, but I bet Manning's worse numbers came only because he was willing to fuck around with things and take risks, whereas Leaf's great numbers came from taking the safe option and trying to win. Coaches are trying to do none of that winning shit.

It's why I'm not all that interested in preseason beyond seeing a player's fundamentals on game day. Week 1 is a much different story.

First I'm hearing of this. He would give our team a much-needed boost to the Browns, who couldn't even beat Washington's team, but I personally really don't want a guy on my team who's done the things he's done. I can't in good conscious root for a domestic abuser.

Is he a domestic abuser? Do you know him personally? Edited by Lord Raven

If anything I wouldn't want RR on my team because he was dog shit in his last full season. Even so, at 28 he could still have more traction on his tires than some of the other retreads out on the market at his position, imo. He could easily turn out to be a decent add for a number of teams that are currently hurting at RB (Dallas, Arizona, and certainly Cleveland come to mind)

LR has a point too. Punching out his wife while drunk at a casino makes him more of an idiot than a domestic abuser. Rice got an aburd amount of negative press due to that video. Everything was just made worse because The Rog fucked up his initial ban so badly (not RR's fault.)

I'm not condoning what the man did. However, by all accounts he's been nothing but a model citizen since the incident, working with domestic abuse groups and the like. Would you have a problem with your team picking up Aldon Smith, who constantly drives while hammered and is the exact opposite of what anyone would consider to be a model citizen? Hell, Smith goes to rehab and STILL can't lay off the sauce before training camp is over. Can you root for a drunk on your team?

Everything about that Ravens OL was dog shit. Our Center at the time (Gino Gradkowski, taking over for a retired Matt Birk) was ranked 34 out of 34, and our line allowed 3.1 ypc. The reason why we got 3.1 ypc and not like 2.9 ypc is because Rice had a single 44 yard run, and I think we had like 3 20+ yard runs the entire season (two were Rice and one was Flacco if I'm recalling right). We also had a crappy LG once Osemele went down (AQ Shipley), Michael Oher was completely incompetent in his fourth year, and our LT as Bryant McKinnie for like 6 games before we brought on Eugene Monroe who did ok but everyone to his right sucked except Yanda. And Yanda was playing injured.

Flacco also had like 1-2 seconds to throw in the pocket, which led to him being sacked 48 times (and it would've been like 10-15 more times if he were a statue, but he's quite mobile). The fact is that Rice could get stopped by a 3 or 4 man front with like a nickel/dime look, and that is more on our OL. It also didn't help Rice was injured after playing 20 games in a row as opposed to our usual 18. He had like a quarter season's extra worth of touches before going into the preseason, and our OL just made things worse.

It was nothing like last season where our OL was amazing and had depth. I firmly believe if Rice didn't do all that nonsense in the off season then our offense would have been even better on the ground than what we saw, which is hard to really imagine given that we had a back who got 200+ carries and like 5.4 yards per carry, as well as being the second highest in the 20+ yard rush department.

I firmly believe that Ray Rice is currently an unknown commodity in every way, shape, or form, and I believe out of all of the guys who actually constantly beat their wives he's probably the only one of them who has done it once and got caught the one time he did it, but that's just my point of view. I don't know his personal life at all, but as it stands I really just don't care enough to lean one way or another. Thanks for 4th and 29 and 4 years of being a Top 5 back, and I wish you the best, I guess.

You're still a domestic abuser even if you only beat your wife once, just like you're a murderer if you only murder someone once. I will note that Ray Rice was only caught on video tape once- domestic abuse cases tend to be underreported overall.

I remember watching that game and actively rooting against the Ravens. That run after the catch was easily one of the best plays I've ever seen. It'll certainly be interesting to see if a team ends up taking a flier on him.

So, I read the other day that the Browns might get Ray Rice. That'd be interesting. :P

Yeah, he'd be going from the old Browns to the new Browns :P

Can we stop this old Browns shit? Our owner isn't even from Cleveland anymore, and it's not like it's the first Ravens back to go to Cleveland (see: Jamal Lewis, Willis McGahee. The two of them, on top of Rice, actually round out the top 3 backs in our franchise's history, oddly enough.)

Yeah, well, that's why I'm not gonna claim one thing or another because I don't know his life. I still doubt he's as bad as some of the other dudes that have been in the league and are currently in the league. Edited by Lord Raven

Probably, but other players being worse criminals is not so much exonerating as it is a statement on criminal behavior in the league.

It's basically that Rice is the outlet for animosity when more deserving people aren't. I'm not suggesting exonerating him for his crime or anything, I'm making the point that he shouldn't be the only outlet.

Now Pouncey's hurt... Ugh. I hope it isn't bad. I can't watch this game because for some reason, live preseason games are blacked out online in areas near where the game is being played. :/

But Pouncey is supposed to be like the best center in the league. He gets hurt too much though. -_-

Do the Packers have a really good defense or something though? Because our offense isn't doing much for some reason.

EDIT: THERE'S that Steeler offense. TD. :) Though by this point, the Packers might have swapped to their second or third strings...

Yeah, poor Jordy Nelson too. I wanted to cheer for the Packers in the main season for my late brother. And them losing their top receiver sucks...

Also, Pouncey has a broken bone in his ankle and will need surgery. Shiiit. :(

It does :( Fortunately, Wide Receiver is a position we're very deep at, so I'm not TOO worried about our receiving corps. But still, losing Jordy for the season hurts :(

Does anyone else feel like a lot of players are getting hurt this year? Compared to the last season, anyways.

I'm sorry for your loss, Anacybele.

Seems like every year we have some sort of injury trouble. Heck, the year we won Super Bowl XLV we had 17 players on IR IIRC.
