Class videos translated

Recommended Posts

We don't even know if Nosferatu is a thing here, do we? And if it is, it's probably nerfed to make double attacking way harder, if not impossible. I'm sure the Hoshido/Nohr split is the only magic split and that all Nohr classes will have access to dark magic, just with some balancing mechanism.

Those Hoshido descriptions seem to suggest that, like the other weapon types, Hoshido bows are different from Nohr ones. Does this sound right? Meanwhile, Hoshido Corrin seems to be the only character with both Hoshido and Nohr equipment, assuming he keeps his Nohr swords and gains Hoshido staffs. I wonder if Azura will get similar treatment in Nohr route? Her classes didn't appear in the videos at all.

Despite my skepticism, those descriptions really make Maid/Butler sound like Felicia/Jakob-exclusive classes. They do seem to be mixed in with the regular ones, though, unlike Villager, so I don't know what to make of it. Villager could get special treatment like in Awakening but it seemed pointless there and even more so here.

Kamui/Corrin is a peculiar case because his Hoshidan promotion description says he wields katanas (刀), contrasting with his Nohrian promotion which says he wields swords (剣). I'm curious to see how that plays out exactly, since it seems like his Dark Prince base class can use swords only.

He gives up his Nohr swords? Interesting.

The Yato(gami) is classified as a katana though, according to the icon.

Oh you're right. I never really paid attention to the icons tbh, though that makes sense given its name. So that means Dark Prince can wield both? I'd assume this isn't the case for the other classes, but maybe it is...?

You can see Suzukaze holding a kunai/hidden weapon here. Aqua can also wield javelins and lances despite starting with a naginata.

Corrin and Azura having access to both would make sense given their status, but I wonder if the weapons are as restricted as we thought. Is that out of the ordinary for Suzukaze?

So is Sorc the only promoted dark magic-using class? Their description only mentioned having a high mag.

Most likely, Sorcerer is just a specialist class, like Berserker for axes. "Dark" magic seems to just be a regular part of the Nohr type of magic, like how all tome users could use dark tomes in Marth's games.

Languages often do not translate precisely. I remember confusion back in Awakening when there was no way to tell whether Alm's DLC class translated to "Demon Fighter" or just "Magic Fighter".

Bovinian has already said this but I want to stress again that 魔道 = dark magic is a mistranslation. It just means magic in general. Nowhere was dark magic ever explicitly mentioned in these class trailers.

So does the hieroglyph mean "dark magic" or simply "magic" period?

It's really vague. I'd just translate it here as Nohrian magic tbh since there is a 魔道 vs 呪 for Hoshido thing going on to differentiate the sides

Surely there must be a precedent in prior translations that would help us establish this?

There's no real precedent because there's no country-exclusive split before this. 魔道 is just to differentiate it from the Hoshido brand of magic. Considering every other weapon type also have a route-specific name, as well.

Weapons and classes in past translated games have been rather uniform; there's a billion new ones here with no precedent at all.

Anyone remember back when there were staves for putting enemies to sleep and such? I feel like I'd use an adventurer more if those were still in. As it stands, it's little better than a sniper with lockpick to me.

Wasn't a newfangled status staff confirmed some time back?

I'd also like to point out that although the translator's decision to specifically use the term "dark magic" is misleading, this error doesn't necessarily deconfirm those classes' access to dark magic either. I actually agree with Othin's theory that dark tomes in this game may just be classified under ordinary tomes that can be used by all Nohrian magic users, possibly limited to high-rank weapons. Leon almost certainly uses a dark tome in all of his depictions. Dark mages/sorcerers weren't described as specifically using dark magic either, but it would be stupid for them to not have access to it.
