If you don't have the Internet or can't StreetPass, you can buy Logbook characters (generics and some of your characters, I believe) from the Einherjar Shop in My Castle too. By the way, I have another question: Does the logbook work between versions? Like, if I add Ryoma to the logbook then could I recruit him in the Nohr version?
