If you are unable to protect them despite that then you probably just shouldn't use them at all, but many others use them as they make your life easier. Well, not using them has worked for me so far so if you found a use for them have at it. Herons are immensely useful for things like low turn counts or draft plays. You don't have to use them if you don't want to, obviously, but don't diss the herons man. If you are having a hard time keeping them alive try using the enemy movement range on them to make sure your herons can be in a safe place before you move them.
