Devil Survivor

Figures there should be a thread to talk about both games...and hopefully any future installments.

So I finally got a chance to actually play Overclocked...and it didn't even take me till day 2 to start struggling. Anyone else playing/have played this game that want to share experiences?

I am hoping this game isn't just a grind fest.

The power of the Internet is strong in Devil Survivior

I've only played Overclocked, but I found the game decent. I liked the music and the characters, but the gameplay wasn't particularly my cup of tea. Which is odd, since I've liked other MegaTen games I've played, and I do like SRPGS. I think the grind for the last two missions turned me off the game

Oh, and screw the mission where you fight Beldr. Damn, those Cait Siths were annoying to deal with

I never made it far. I restarted it a few times because I felt resources were too limited for a team overhaul. I stopped the first time because I had no idea how to defend myself from Basilik and Vidofnir's Petra and Paral Eyes assault. The escort missions weren't so hot so I stopped on one of those on a different attempt.

I still intend to try again to finally get past Big B and see how it opens up. MegaTen is always a little rough early on due to limitations but I really felt it with Devil Survivor. I'm also bad at video games.

I was actually hoping SMTxFE would be like these games.

Overclocked having an 8th day is also really nice for some endings.

[spoiler=Endgame]Naoya's path is one of my favorite endings ever. You get to make a huge choice near the beginning of the 8th day that changes the ending. It also makes the angels look kinda the same demons which I liked.

Magic is pretty powerful though, bosses usually got killed in one shot with a magic based MU. Though the first bel fight is much harder with magic.

fuse your demons, fuse your demons, please fuse your demons

No matter how much you raise a low level demon it's always going to be trash. Only the unique demons don't expire as fast as those near its starting level, so you can keep those around if you want. The devil survivor series gives a lot of freedom in fusing so get intimate with the race skills and the strengths/weaknesses of your demons, you could potentially fuse something really overpowered down the line. Oh but don't buy demons from the compendium, that's a quick way to run out of macca. Just buy/bid more from the auctions.

Use wilders to get up close against long range viles and such, or set up a curse resistant party to try and negate status effects. One of my favorite race skills is phantasm, which allows you to cross certain obstacles and decreases the wait time of your actions which effect when your next turn is.

and if I could recommend making MC a magic nuke since you don't get one until waaay down the line and only then on certain routes

The damage you deal for the first Bel fight is calculated by level, not strength. So there's no penalty to go magic.

Magic in Overclocked is powerful because it acts as magic attack and magic defense, not to mention the plethora of magic skills. Physical is generally not recommended because there's a lack of physical skills to go around early game and Atsuro exist all the time.

Yuzu's magic nuke though. And you get her at the beginning of the game.

Can someone explain how the different routes work exactly? It depends on whose name you choose in the Comp events?

Also anyone had the experience of playing this and Record Breaker, and have an opinion of how they compare?

pretty much

some ending routes also depend on if you made certain choices/saw certain scenes earlier in the game, while others like law or chaos, are always available (as in, there isn't an alignment system in this game like in other mainseries SMT games)

record breaker is obviously better/fine tuned just because it's a newer game, but they're both worth playing, especially if you haven't played either DeSu game before.

AH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR A DESU THREAD

I've played and completed Record Breaker, and have been wanting to try Overclocked as well.

[spoiler=My experiences]
After Sep!Day 4, I started using almost exclusively Magic!MC, Daichi, Keita, and Otome.

I got the ending where you kill Polaris with Daichi and the void is replaced with water but nothing is ever really fixed.

In Triangulum, I got the one where humanity will continue to fight the invaders, and get no rest.

My experience in the series is when I started the first game, I didnt play much of it cause it was on another SD card where I have to switch my main one.

[spoiler=]

I lost interest especially on the final stretch where I decided to escape but I did went that far

I rely on the sequel to be my redemption and I beat both stories.

[spoiler=]

Beaten the original story on Blessing mode with Daichi's way and in the Triagulum on Apocalypse and made my main character the new Admin

First thing first, Devil Survivor => Devil Survivor 2.
Maybe no gameplay-wise (then again...) Better plot, better characters, no friendship or Personaeque bullshit. True SMT plot. Heck, I even find the endings better, where you have everything you want. Though they kind of screwed up at some point, like with Keisuke, you can agree with his way of thinking, but in the end they still force you go along with idealistic craps.

I'm a bit of an odd with the 3DS versions, because while I do enjoy the voice acting... the bonus days are just weird. They just seem to linear and one-dimensional as hell, that it just... ugh.

And Record Breaker have a Golden Ending, which make cringe so much. As if Daichi's ending wasn't bad enough.

It doesn't mean that I don't enjoy them, but they just kinda feel out of place.

Oh boy, MagicMC is just badass !

Go if yourself Beldr, he is such and yet, it show us exactly what is Atlus, and why they are so awesome.

Fun fact, I names my MC Kazuya Toudou. Kazuya, in honor to one of the official name of the SMT1's MC, and Toudou in honor of the official name of P1's MC, which is Naoya Toudou.

See the joke ?

Speaking of Naoya, he is easily the best characters of the two games.

I dunno, I like Personaeque bullshit personally.

I tried watching the DeSu 2 anime, and it's hilariously bad. Didn't even get halfway through the second episode.

Conceptually, the whole fusion of NGE and SMT seems like it could be cool, but I'll just have to play the game and see for myself.

Also does anyone know if there are any "shared universe" connections between the two games?

I don't recall there being any major connections, at least. I've only played through DS2 once so I obviously haven't thoroughly scrutinized the script.

It's definitely possible to beat Overclocked without entering any Free Battles at all (you even get some points to spend to alter your NG+ experience if you do so), though it does require foresight to the point that it probably isn't going to happen on your first playthrough (the stats worth investing to are kind of predictable, but there are still the dilemmas of what skills to crack, what demons to purchase and fuse, what route to take, etc.).

The other characters will get some exp even if they were not deployed at all, so it's somewhat effortless to just solo some Free Battles with your MC and obliterate the game.

No at all besides a Black Frost cameo. [spoiler=somewhat major endgame spoiler]There's some people that will claim the rightful inheritor to the heavenly throne, Eli, is YHVH but that's a mistranslation on Atlus USA's part--its name is actually Errai. I hear this ended up being corrected in Record Breaker.

So no, there is no connection.

I am surprised that you were able to watch the second episode. I dropped right after the first episode.

Finally got through Day 2. Was annoying because the npc kept trying to suicide into the demons.

This game is super fun. Though it doesn't seem likely we'll get a third installment (Devil Survivor 3DS?)?

We do. It's the Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.

Not sure, but maybe the Devil Survivor team will do a 3DS game after they finish with SMT x FE. I still haven't played the 2nd one, but I really enjoyed the first.
