So, do you think you could list out the possible classes for the generics and your thoughts on them?

Maybe later, like at the end of Act 2 (which is where I've played to). Spoilers: by the end of Act 2, Thurio and Mercurio still won't be in their final classes. For now we've barely scratched the surface of the more complicated classes, and you probably get the idea by now ('you leave squire immediately, archers are decent, knights are fucking boring, thieves are stealbots, monks are good despite not having hats fsr, chemists are dull but efficient, white magi are dull but efficient, black magi are dull but efficient, mystics have really accurate disable and a bunch of abilities that are not really accurate disable'). We'll get into the more complex classes when we use (like Orator), face (like Summoner) and desperately try and get through the arcane and asinine JP requirements for (like Samurai) them.

That does, however, mean I'm writing the full overview now. It just won't be seen for another week and a half! Always prepare your buffers, people.

There does seem to be a lot missing with Argath in hindsight; after his abrupt face-heel turn he just kinda laughs gleefully at being made to follow the orders of his highborn idols and spit in the faces of Delita and Mercurio(who still takes everything in stride gods bless). Ah, but it makes him all the more punchable! And who doesn't love a good sockpuppet?

Things Gaffgarion is paid to do: Escort the princess, kill people unnecessarily
Things Gaffgarion is not paid to do: Actually guard the princess

Presumably he just sort of gets paid by the route? Like hell, it's the princess' problem if she can't keep up. But dude, Gaff, if you get the chance to take a detour, that's more taxi fare. God. Cab better, Gaff.

I did not cut anything out of that exchange. Gaffgarion, who is the unambiguous leader of Mercurio and the Lad, did not want to go after Ovelia. He decided it was not financially worth it. Finance and a vague secondary tendency towards bloodshed have been the only concerns that he, a mercenary, has displayed. And yet Mercurio's like 'I want to figure out who the dude is' and then Gaffgarion's like, yeah, okay, sure!

Why?

Agrias' knights and the Lad all join you - they're generics in FFT but have a minor sidequest in WOTL.

We're thrust without warning into a fight in Dorter, a Blue Dot. It's relatively inoffensive here since there's not terribly much else that can be done anyway.

FFT seems to use Ser and Lady instead of Sir and Dame. Which annoys me. I'm fine with 'ser' as either a feminine-specific or unisex equivalent to 'sir' ('dame' doesn't quite sound... fightly enough for a setting with female combatants, as basically all fantasies should be, since we aren't just here to copy medieval Europe's shitty attitudes towards gender) but eh.

In the meantime?

There are a lot of job classes within FFT and perhaps people (like me) who might actually want to play along would like some guidance on their generics. So, do you think you could list out the possible classes for the generics and your thoughts on them?

I can help you with that.

Males have higher PA (physical) and females have higher MA (magical), so in most cases, it's better to have casters be mages and females be casters. There are some exceptions to this. Males make better Chemist than females because the only weapons that they use are physical or don't use any stats at all except Faith and weapon power. Females make slightly better thieves on the account that most of the enemies in the game are male so Steal Heart is better used from a female than a male-- it also helps that females cannot have worst compatibility with males so it makes it impossible to ever have your stealing rates plummet as a result of signs. The only exception to the male / female dynamic is Ramza who is actually good at both because he gets male and female bonuses outside of gear.

If any of your characters have time that are male, they should always go to Bard Summoner Job Level 4 and Mediator Job Level 4. This class enables them to get Move + 3, the best movement in the game besides Teleport (Time Mage). If you're on the PSP version, you CAN get it with Dark Knight, but I don't think Dark Knight is worth grinding for.

Onion Knight is a lousy class and cannot learn much. *Master Onion Knight is okay, but I still find that it's not really worth it.

You should always have Gain JP Up / JP Boost equipped until you at least hit the job that you want and from there grab everything else that you need.

The main thing I'd say for a Vanilla "good" team would be.

1) Wizard (if it's Ramza use his Squire class) / Sub Samurai skills (female or Ramza). Since Samurai skills scale off of magic, it's a great way to have Ramza fight up close without having to rely on charging, and in Chapter 4, Ramza gets a skill that boosts his magic. It's amazing.

2) Ninja / Sub Monk Skills with Martial Arts as the support ability. Two Swords with Fist is some of the best damage in the game, and the monk skill is very versatile. Plus the Ninja is one of the fastest classes in the game in terms of growths and multipliers which will result in your characters being able to go more frequently (and perhaps get a permanent speed boost depending on long you stay in the class). I'd recommend this be a male at all cost.

3) Geomancer / Sub White Mage - Having two people that are capable of reviving is never a bad idea, and the white mage can have some free AoE attacks when it's not supporting your team. Plus Geomancer has competent MA as well so you can use magic without fear of it being rather lackluster here.

4) Mystic (Oracle) with the Samurai's Two Hand passive is great on a female unit. Since sticks scale off of MA, you can have a woman go to town with sticks and poke people to death while simultaneously giving you access to powerful status effects. In all honestly, it doesn't really matter what you use as your secondary, but keeping with the magical concept, I'd use Summon skills if only because you'd pack some large AoE with smart targeting (doesn't hurt your allies) and you get Golem, a spell that ruins the intelligence of the AI and blocks physical attacks for the amount of hp that the caster has. These skills also have the incredible ability of "not missing" it's nice.

5) Monk / Time Magic - This is actually more effective than you'd believe. Since most of the spells don't actually do damage, you can have a unit that can hit with haste on the party, and if for some reason can't kill or reach enemies, use slow on them.

A team like that should be a great starting point to beat the game. I'd recommend Math Skill, but it's more of a pain and a chore to get and I don't recommend doing so on a first playthrough as the class itself is rather lackluster even if the skills themselves are very powerful.

while i appreciate the suggestions for a team composition, i was more thinking of something along the lines of my generics being Male Monk/(fill), Female White Mage/Time Mage, and Female Geomancer/Samurai. Ramza, im still not sure what he should be. but, these are options for another time, and once again i appreciate the suggestions.

If you plan on leaving Ramza in his base class (which is fairly good, so it's not a bad idea), magic-using secondaries are probably best, since Ramza's useful skills are mostly supportive in nature, and most physical secondaries either don't help him kill enemies (Knight, Thief) or aren't great on Squires (Charge w/o range, Jump w/o Spears, Punch Skill w/o Martial Arts). The only exception would be Throw, but while it's fine there are better options. Item is also fine, since instant speed, unmissable healing/reviving is never bad.

Draw Out is great because it has damage, healing, buffs and range. Black Magic is great for damage, White Magic offers more support as well as Holy for even more damage. Green Magic has a lot of utility, and the HP Drain destroys bosses since it deals percentage damage. Elemental is good for range and possible status, but is kind of weak. Time Magic lets Ramza support even harder, and occasionally drop a giant rock on his enemies. I'm not a huge fan of Summons outside of a dedicated caster, but Golem is nice. Talk Skill is better for grinding and/or min/maxing than actual combat. Math Skill is obviously amazing but also a giant pain to grind for (although Auto Battle lets the computer do the math for you). Same with Dark Knight, but much more so.

The best thing about Ramza is he's incredibly flexible, since he gets the best of both Male and Female growths, so I would recommend just using whatever you like most.

Right, with just one objection: Oratory is my main mode of combat in Chapter 2 and probably also 3 and 4. I guess in hindsight the reasons are probably spoilery! But Oration owns.

If you're a DUMB BITCH as well, you lose 10 Bravery for the fight which translates to losing two forever, note how this is inconsistent with Argath. I'm okay with it because of course you want to save the bird?

I don't know if you still recruit him if you choose not to save him. I don't think it changes anything if you crystallise him (and thus Kill For Real) in the fight against Wiglaf, either. He might only turn knocked out, like a guest.

Oh, now that Mercurio's had a sprite update, his Squire class has received a buff. He can now shout at people to improve their brave by 5 (1 permanently). That's how he's been grinding, essentially. His bravery is now 77 permanently, and it will - I mean let's be real, I'm getting it to the 90s. He can also wear armour as a squire now. Combine that with the fact that the stats are pretty good and the speed in particular is above-average, and you have a viable endgame class.

In the original translation, his unique abilities were named Yell and Scream.

Bask in the one perfect birb that is Boco, but now relish in the thought that from now on all future birbs can only walk in Boco's perfect shadow and can never share his perfection. Therefore they must be warked into oblivion.

Thurio finishes the job.

17cfe89c200d097ff4c42d38110613d0.png
Delita's a paladin now. He's got most of the sword skills, but doesn't have the equipment destruction ones or Gaffgarion's lifestealing. So basically it's Agrias' skillset, plus Chant (a Mettle ability from the better squire, which is a neat touch IMO) and wayyyy better stats (a decent 7 instead of a woeful 4 attack, average instead of bad speed and 4 movement).

Delita holds the bridge while Ovelia casts a ridiculous array of defensive buffs on herself and runs for it. Since Delita has the bridge and we don't have many sources of ranged damage all we can really do is keep grinding lol

5a2cc6312a15ff1c7f0ce46f02caacd7.png
It may or may not have come up, but all special classes just overwrite Squire, and only its A-abilities at that. So most paladin enemies have Defend and Counter Tackle equipped. It's stupid.

I found the warping in TO even more egregious than FFT, personally. At least (some?) NPCs had items set aside in their inventories for it.

Spoiler

Meet Mustadio.

Mustadio's in a spot of bother, accosted by a Standard FFT Battle Formation.

178e467a939741f468e7915c3980ab9b.png
If he picks 1, he decides we must help this dude, Mustadio, everyone gains 5 Bravery, and we need to rout.

178e467a939741f468e7915c3980ab9b.png
If he picks 2, we come to the EXACT SAME CONCLUSION, but now we must protect Mustadio and everyone gains 10 Bravery instead. This time, the game encourages us to take the knightly option, so I will give it a shot. This mission sucks, though.

4bb7efeb52adb44504f06c3357f54c9c.png
Height fucks us over. Grass is green. Their mages are free to bombard us over the walls, though, of course. Also despite my like two hours of grinding they've closed to our level again. I'm too busy bitching about that to post their archer throwing a stone at Mustadio instead of shooting him.

So this is what points to FFT coming AFTER the other Ivalice games. It makes sense, too - after the bright, vibrant and technologically-proficient atmosphere of, say, FFTA2 (probably also FF12, but I don't know it as well) we've basically entered a dark age.

Mustadio is basically a mooglaboo. Goug's like... the only constant between like EVERY Ivalice game. It used to be the moogle home city in the TAs, so it stands to reason that what are now its ruins is just sort of there for the plunder.

I wonder how much of this was planned at the time? Since FFT was the earliest Ivalice game to be made. In any case, this is one of the story details of FFT I do like a lot.

I never used Invite much myself due to the terrible base accuracy, but I like the idea of Ramza convincing his enemies to join him with words like some kind of Fire Emblem protagonist.

As for Goug, I'm pretty sure it's only in Tactics and FFTA2. It's definitely not in XII, I don't believe it's in Revenant Wings, and the moggle town in FFTA is called Baguba Port.

Huh. Well, I guess I was wrong the several times in the TA2 LP that I referred to Goug as a connection with FFTA lmao

You are right, though, I remember Baguba now. The Aisenfield was the area in both - and there's a Salikawood in TA and IIRC 12.

Yep, Salikawood is in XII. Giza Plains is also in both, as is Ambervale (although you never go there in XII).

There are a couple of areas shared between the games, apparently. Bervenia appears as a palace in FFTA, but is a region with a city and volcano in FFT. Roda Volcano is in FFTA and Revenant Wings. Ozmonfield in FFTA and Ozmone Plain in XII are hinted at being the same place, as well. There's probably others I'm not remembering, besides.

We open the fight with geomancy, stopping an archer in his tracks. Geomancy basically works like... you don't get a selection of skills, but rather it's like, you unlock ground that you can use Geomancy on. And if you're standing on it you then get to deal area damage with a chance to status at people from distance, using both magic and physical attack, so Mercurio's ideal for it.

please never speak about ff12, a good game, again in this thread, which is dedicated to an awful series of bad games

After his stupid overwrought metaphor, Dice pours himself some wine.

Cool ways to accomplish that: 'kill someone who he is very fond of in front of him, give your knights carte blanche to attack and try to kill him'

Even Gaffgarion, who is, I will remind the audience, an intense enough war criminal that it gave him unholy superpowers, is like, 'dude, chill'.

The game script is tripping over itself to tell us that Dycedarg is an extremely cool Badman who is totally clever and cool and gets all the Females and totally told off those jocks.

This is an exhaustive list of what Dycedarg's schemes to this point have achieved;

The term 'Knight Devout' has never been used before. I don't know who it refers to.

Apart from the line where the scriptwriter forces Gaffgarion to acknowledge how cool Dice is meant to be, I like his tone here; specifically "this is the most unprofessional clusterfuck I've ever had the misfortune to be involved with".

Terrifying Omnipotent Archvillain, Dycedarg 'Dice' Beowulf: "lol the dudes I sent just sort of all got murdered and idk what happened to them, probs means the plan got leaked but let's just try and get on with it anyway"

As long as Ovelia remains with her faithful bodyguard whose sole loyalties lie with her, who have so far destroyed all opposition to Ovelia, we are fine.

An important lever. In fact, I think this lever is the only reason for this sub-scene.

I think Lucavi just means 'demon' in whatever origin it's from, but any search for the term just produces FFT.

Mustadio, who was introduced to us by way of a man shouting at him to 'hand over the auracite', is Not well.

Let's all stare at Mustadio.

So, still useful for tech purposes, Zodiac Braves (a stupid name) or not.

I wonder if the Zodiac Boyz themselves were actually called Aries/Taurus/etc.

We actually get a full combat load for this one!!! Welcome Solyeuse to the team. Also this is another of those filler battles. I miss Mustadio turning a ghost to stone, but he does so, because that's all this map is, is an excuse to make Mustadio look good, which he isn't, he's a geek.
