"Reinforcements? ... Doing a long range scan. I'll get back to you on that Lieutenant... But, all units," Jess began, changing radio frequencies, "be on the look out for further units!" Jess had no real reason to doubt Chris at this point, and keeping themselves further on their toes would only help.

The prisoner's attitude had definitely been begging for readjustment, the whole way to the medbay, but Abby had known better than to try and make that happen. When she'd finished with a 'looks like you're stuck with me', she just smiled, shook her head, and replied, "Could be worse, you could be stuck with me," then shifted focus to one of the nurses who'd come over to take a look while Megumi was trying to sort out the special drugs situation.

"Whoa, I look like a big girl? And here I'd been trying to watch my figure," she playfully shot back, slightly twisting back and forth to shoot glance at each side of her waist, all in the spirit of the joke, before settling down and following the instructions not to move. Crooked smile on her face, she added, "Thanks for the concern, and the assist." The treatment that followed wrapped up about how one would expect it, and she stuck around until the whole Megumi and prisoner situation finally sorted itself out, before saying a few words to Nikolai and finally leaving to spend the rest of her evening elsewhere.

~~~
The next day, a big day for Abigail. Back in her pride and joy, Buck's manglings aside, she was looking forward to making sure Apotheosis's fool move became their greatest mistake. Everybody else seemed to be handling the matter in their own ways, some nervous, some composed, some fooling around and showboating fine manual dexterity with their robots. It was all whatever until the enemies warped in. It certainly was shaping up to be the level of serious assault that had been threatened, a multipronged affair that even the extensive defensive planning was likely to struggle and buckle with. The whole Riese crew complement moved out nearly as one, to reinforce the flank that seemed most in need of it.
Abby felt a momentary sting, as Jess radioed all hands not to concern themselves with helping out Alphonse. Like she'd have been interested in throwing caution to the wind and risking her neck for some ANF honcho in the first place? But of course, it was meant for a broader audience. She was wearing her captain hat now, and had to focus on the whole, not any individual part, even if that part happened to share a bed with her at night. A quick slap, both hands on both cheeks, helped Abigail to snap herself out it, and get back to focusing on the battle. The laughter that one of their new tagalongs caused was also good medicine for shaking those dreary thoughts from her mind. Just where had they found a nut like that? If your hands are burning, there's a cream for that...
The damaged Christina clone thought it was a good idea to hail the enemy directly. Abigail declined to do the same. Just like the previous time with Vera... though circumstances were obviously different. There simply wasn't any gain for her in it, and making it even easier, she held no special animosity for this particular dung beetle that had come crawling out of that giant shitheap of an organization.
As they waded their way deeper into the nest of Cressidas, it was no real surprise that nobody was eager to team up with her to take some down. Not with all the bridges she'd burned. That was fine. She'd just have to work on one of the fresh ones. No biggie.
Thorvald had gotten some good test time in on the simulations last night after Avery'd given the whirlwind tour in-person. But there was always that difference between sitting in a comfortable chair safely out of harm's way, and actually being out there on the ground, risking it all. Still he was as ready as he'd ever be, with such short notice, and that would just have to be good enough. If it wasn't, he'd have to make it be good enough.
Of course, his lack of familiarity with the machine meant he couldn't quite join in the fun and games, as people were working the tension out, trying not to go crazy from waiting, but there'd always be more chances for that later. When the enemy did arrive, Jess's no-nonsense declaration that there would be no negotiating with terrorists made him smile. It was good to see she'd settled firmly into things. The captain had certainly come a long way from some of those rocky first missions, that was for sure. He couldn't help feel a touch of pride, though his own contributions in helping her along probably didn't amount for all that much.
When a bunch of reinforcements showed up, right around the Admiral's position, Thorvald had actually considered turning around for the assist. He'd made the determination to see the man through this safe and sound, after all. Jess's comment helped to ground him, however. It certainly was true, that the real threat to Martinson came from the freakish robotic monstrosity piloted by the madwoman hellbent on revenge. He and his honor guard ought to be capable of holding their own against the rank and file. Keeping that weaponry, the destruction from the viral video, contained and out of range of him, that was the best protection they could offer right now.
Kim radioed in for assistance, and he was more than happy to oblige, and the resultant success was a big shot of self esteem. Not even ten minutes in, and the Odin was already flexing its mucles and putting in work. He hadn't even gotten to the big guns yet, just basically trying out the first thing that came to mind, considering range and readiness. Maybe if the situation allowed, this would lead into rotating through the whole arsenal one after the other? But then again, if anything were to go south, he'd have to abandon those plans and just stick with whatever had proven to be the most reliable option.
For now though? Very much in experimentation mode. And can anyone blame him? Really find fault? Unlikely. Engaging the transformation to tank mode, he lined up a shot with one of the big guns on an enemy pretty far away. It was a little iffy, could have been a cleaner kill if he'd barreled in and closed the distance perhaps. But everyone was counting on him as the heart of the formation, and that would have left him rather out of position. He just had to make sure he didn't miss. That was all.
Thorvald turns into a tank, stays put, launches 250mm shells at cress 1
if he misses, Abby stays put, shoot cress 1 with sniper
if he hits, Abby stays put, shoot cress 8 with sniper
"M-more reinforcements... aaah, noted." A shaky voice seemed to respond the comms. Caroline was lagging behind somewhat, no thanks to being unfamiliar with the legionary Mk-IV before this assignment. It was easy to tell she was a pile of nerves, though, at least in terms of piloting, she was still stable. "F-following up!" It seemed she didn't want to lag behind --sticking around the crew was best for safety.
---
It was always a bit harder to engage the enemy on the CT-frame, but it did pack a punch. Makoto sighed, following along the crew, waiting for action. "That was a good plan, Tarquin. This side is much cleaner." They certainly got some control back from Apotheosis!
Caroline to 23,19
Makoto to 19,17.
The situation was getting complicated. Reinforcements had arrived, more were likely to come if they had to guess. Louise was moving, but her supporters weren't. Letting her take the brunt of the work it seemed. The thought of charging in briefly danced around Astin's mind, though their promise to Avery to stay safe rang in their mind. But as the snake moved forward, and the nearby robots were mowed down, they couldn't shake it. Taking Louise down early could potentially end this all with minimal blood shed. Her minions would likely leave if she were defeated, and, well... No, best not to dwell too much on that. Get the job done, move forward. That was all they could do now. Defenses up as best they could, sword drawn, Astin sent out a quick call of, "Fencer moving to engage the Snake. Time to cut things off sooner rather than later." Time for action.
Astin shields, moves to 14-19, engage Louise with proto sword
Player Phase / Turn 03
scenario_8_turn_3.png
"Long range scan finished... Looks like--" Right on cue, a few more machines came into view, landing behind the Riese. Jess grimaced. "All units, looks like whatever Chris frisked out of Louise was correct. Those seems to be the reinforcements they were expecting..." Four more of the larger model, and... Another unique machine? How much did Apotheosis have at their disposal? Jess tried to keep her cool until--
"Captain, three more units detected... But we can't find a visual on them."
"What?" Jess checked the scan, it was indeed picking up eight new signatures, but there were only five... "Scatter missiles towards the area!" It was a lucky guess, a small barrage of missiles shorting out the new machines' camouflage. Three more unknowns, Jess bit her lip. "Stay vigilant! We'll make it through this!"
"Captain Gefalscht! Come in!" That was Vance, as if Jess didn't have enough to worry over. "We're gettin' swarmed over here. Look, you've gotta take out their command! Mess up their coordination somewhat, or we're just gonna get bowled over!" "R-Right, sir... Command... Ugh, all units, focus fire on Louise's machine! And the sniper from before! We need to shake them up some!" It was all they really had to try, at this point...
BM change: Reduce Louise's HP to below 1000, and defeat Carlos in 5 turns!
Victory Condition: Defeat All Enemies!
Defeat Condition: The Riese is destroyed!
Doc!
Alriana watched the battlefield a bit more as she waited for her chance to strike. The enemy machines to her right and left seemed to be fighting a losing battle with no deliverance in sight; however, the machines by her target seemed to have no problem dealing with their foes. They'd definitely impede her approach, maybe even take her out, if they were given the chance. She needed to move now, while they were still distracted by the remainder of her pseudo-allies. "Mgah'ehye's bug. Ymg' ah'f'nah fm'latghor. Ahna r'luh", she directed her squad as she herself advanced.
"Yog mgr'luh," the Almydis suddenly warned her. It seemed her target had fired missiles at her... Had they detected her? No, it must've just been luck. "F' mggoka mgyogor!" She seamlessly grabbed her gun and shot down any missiles that got too close for comfort, her squadmates doing the same. "Damn," she swore as they lost their camouflage, not really knowing the meaning behind the word. She only just knew that it was said when things weren't going well. Hopefully her enemies would be too preoccupied with the others to pay her much attention.
With enemy forces everywhere, it was becoming increasingly important to deal with Louise... She was certainly the queenpin holding things together.
"I'm done, Hannah."
"Done? What?"
"I've been scanning that thing since we started fighting. It has a few structural issues, mostly around the joints. Forwarding to everyone else~"
"R-Right... Everyone, Galatea is sending information on Louise's machine! Please aim for the joints when engaging her!"
Despite their success at rounding up the Cressidas, they were still fighting against time. "More reinforcements... keep your eyes on further signals." It there was a possibility Apotheosis could overwhelm the Riese, they'd surely take it, but thankfully the ANF wasn't all them, and they weren't being pushovers this fight.
"Thorvald, I've been keeping track of their movements. I'll forward the data, show what your machine can do."
"Fencer, what are you doing?" Kim asked, blinking incredulously for a moment as Astin charged straight into the fray, swinging the Ceres blade at Louise and her monstrous machine... somehow, be it luck or skill, despite eating several hits from Apotheosis' unique machines, Astin and their machine seemed... in relatively good shape. They had taken some damage, but appeared fully operational. Still, it was paramount now that they advance, so that they could give Astin a viable retreat path. As Hannah forwarded scans of the Regina to the crew, Seung-Min took a few moments to look them over.
"Fencer, the next time you feel like going... hog wild, give us more... advanced warning, so we can back you up. Bright eyes, Papa bear and Merlin, follow my lead. We can open up a retreat path and... smack that monster down a peg in one go." Kim noted, sending off a basic attack plan to those three, along with Astin in order to hopefully keep the menace pinned down. Thrusters roaring to life, the Artemis began to move into action, diving low to the ground for cover before unleashing a barrage of beam fire into the Regina, magnum bursts hurtling towards the weaker joints as it's armour was peppered with suppressive fire from the funnels and gatlings, strafing towards forward cover as she fired.
"Let's see you shrug this one off!"
Oh dear. Astin had charged headline into the fray. Thorvald was a little worried after the boy, but when he saw him take proper bracing posture and deflect the meat of the attacks away from his own robot's center of mass he couldn't help but nod a satisfied nod. Whether he'd learned from example, or had a natural knack and picked it up on his own didn't matter. What did matter was that after watching the first attack, he knew he didn't need to even see the rest, and could focus on taking stock of the rest of the field, while the sergeant took control of things over there. Of course, they'd quickly have to pivot and move in to support, but it wouldn't be a rushed rescue so they could afford to do this right.
Following along the plight of their allied ANF forces was another story. The base was losing defensive structures left and right, and fate had seen to it that more than one friendly pilot wouldn't make it home to their families tonight. Thorvald felt a quiet rage building up, and the desire to do even more, to shut this damn fool lieutenant down before she could lead Apotheosis to do any more damage.
Roxanna must have been on a similar wavelength, as no sooner had he begun to work on lining things up, she radioed him vital targeting data, which combined with Hannah's information on the structural integrity of that reptilian robot, would certainly be invaluable. "Thanks, Roxanna," he replied. "Maybe you don't know just how much work you've saved me, but it's a real relief to have someone like you to rely on." Seung-Min had called out the framework of an attack order, sensible and aggressive, and he quickly pivoted to follow through on opening she'd created with her own assault. One more 250mm shell, and then... yes, this was the right time to lay on the HEAT.
Swiftly operating the levers, ejecting the spent casing from the previous round, and refilling the 250mm cannon, this time loaded for bear, Thorvald smiled grimly, nodded, and gazed at the photograph he'd migrated from the cockpit of the old legionary. Yup. A reminder. One more important reason why things need to be done, and done right. This enemy could take down a Kraken? There was no way a few trial suits could ever hope to take it out? It was impossible?
Bullshit. He was making this possible. "We can do this guys. We're ending this Regina, right here, right now. Let's give the world a brighter viral video. Not one of fear, but one of hope. Merlin, Bright Eyes, I know you're with me on this."
Squeezing down on the trigger deliberately, the high explosive anti tank round sailed directly toward the target.
"No... N-No!" 'System malfunction', a warning tone rang into Louise's cockpit, as a few sparks began to fly from one of her monitors. This was going south far too quickly... Her E-Fields were offline, the machine had taken too much damage. "I'm... This, is all I'm worth, isn't it Helena? This is as far as I go... Fine. Fine! FINE! I'll take all of you with me!"
"I've had enough of this! Of all of you looking down on me like my pain means nothing! The Regina's safety locks turned off, a needle shooting itself into the top of Louise's spine from the console behind her. She went limp for a moment, but only that. Lifting her head back up, the Regina started to mirror her own movements. "You're all going to die here..."
Elaine knew that responding to Louise was a bad idea, but she couldn't help herself. To hear someone this sorry for themselves and so angry at other people... it made her think too much of her self for her own tastes. They were different though, she couldn't sucker herself into believing that the psychopath they were fighting was someone justified in their actions. Just because people made you angry didn't mean you could punc-... nevermind, they needed to stop Louise regardless. They'd dealt a lot of damage to her, they just needed to keep going.
"We heard your story, it ain't fair what happened to you... but going on a crusade to kill the Admiral ain't gonna fix your legs." Elaine replied, part of her hoping she could sway Louise's mad rampage. Everyone else was just making her angry, Louise was probably going to snap - of she hadn't already. "Things won't work out right, whether you win or lose here. If you win, you'll be left with no purpose and if you fail, you'll... probably be executed if you don't die in this battle. Existin' like this doesn't work no matter how you look at it.
-
Tarquin didn't think much of Louise's threats, and Elaine's response was a prime example of the emotional thought process she was fishing for. It didn't matter if she were right or wrong, justified or not, she was a designated enemy - he had no reason to feel bad or guilty about her condition. She had actively chosen to fight against them, the decision was entirely her own. Calling out Elaine was rather tempting, but it was incredibly likely either the Captain or someone else would beat him to it and have far more impact in doing so.
The last thing Brant expected was for Chris to verbally assault Louise over the radio, but in hindsight, it was probably a good idea, keeping her distracted this way. She'd essentially turned the snake woman's own taunt against Elaine back on her, and Brant could tell it was having an effect. There was just one issue with it. With so much chaos around them, Brant was having a hard time not getting swept up in the 'emotional current,' and felt himself getting angrier and angrier right along with Chris. It didn't plateau until and recede until she cut the transmission.
"Need a second ..." Brant replied with an apology of his own as he rubbed at his head. He'd likely wind up screaming that information, too ...
This battle was turning out a lot more difficult than Brant thought it would be; there were too many allies struggling against Apotheosis, and that tugged at his attention from every direction. This was another gap in Alkaev training. They taught their pilots how to look after themselves and a very small group, not a whole battalion. Brant couldn't quite focus on the battle plan, and just tried to stay inside the defensive bubble the Riese and Avalon crews were forming and providing support. Allied numbers weren't the only thing causing Brant problems ...
Louise ... she threw away everything just to get back at one man ... and she killed so many people just to get here. She really is a monster. She could have been someone else completely, our ally, our friend ... anything ... but she threw everything away for revenge. It reminded Brant too much of the grief he felt from his own situation, and as well as what happened to Rex. It also reminded him of one of his dreams. That nihilistic doppelganger wanted him to discard all of his bonds and live solely for himself ... but that wasn't much different from the path Louise was on. They might even be one and the same.
And just listen to her now that she's on defense ...
Louise was threatening them with total annihilation over the comms, but even with the giant mechanical gorgon preparing to fight the ANF seriously for a change, they were still going to take her down at this rate. After that, who knows ...
We have to kill her. Not just for the sake of 'justice,' but for her sake, too. The term 'putting someone out of their misery' had never felt so painfully apt to Brant until now.
Louise was losing her marbles, and for good reason. They had managed to all but halt her advance, even with some powerful backup at the rear. Somehow that had Firmia more wary than anything. While the enemy was spread out into roughly three clusters, they were still having an unexpectedly lower impact on the ANF's HQ. Even accounting for reinforcements, they ought to be able to win this by pressing their early advantage as hard as they could, and stomping out the Regina before it could do any major damage. After that, their 'ace' units and battleships. And after that ... cleanup? Firmia truly felt like something should be going horribly wrong right about now, especially since Hannah had been worried, too ... Hannah, the usually optimistic, quasi-immortal, charge in saber swinging super pilot.
There was one area on their side where things could get dangerous. Brant was still not in top form, which made it a bad time to be trying out a different copilot, and an even worse time to be using him in a full scale battle like this. Firmia couldn't help but divide her attention between him and everything else going on, making certain she didn't lose track of his emotional state throughout the battle. She could tell he wasn't all there right now, but yelling at him over the comms wouldn't help. All of that preparation and there was still almost nothing she could do for him, now. Well, that wasn't quite true. There was something she could do for him, something her grandfather had been planning, until Rosa stopped him that is. But that wasn't something she wanted to dwell on, right now. She'd already over invested in that yesterday evening ...
The Burden of Knowledge
Spoiler
Test the T-Link now installed on the Avalon's bridge? Check. Browse some of the decrypted files from the journal, the ones pertaining to herself in particular? Check. Stupidly look into Brant's files after already hitting a new low? Check. And lastly, take medication for the ensuing headache? Check. With nothing else on her plate for the evening, and nothing she could practically attend to until early in the morning, Firmia decided to retire to her quarters for the evening. She was tired, almost too tired to keep reading, though that wasn't stopping her. When Hannah finally returned, Firmia was back to sifting through material she'd already read, and barely had her eyes open. There was more than just fatigue weighing her eyelids down, however.
"... the greater my knowledge, the greater my grief. The more you know, the greater your sorrow. I'm pretty sure someone important said that once ..." It wasn't much of a greeting, but Firmia was neither fully awake, nor in a good mood after learning so much about herself and about the Abrams brothers. It was hard to believe that they might actually break this cycle of monsters creating new monsters, but with how things were unfolding, it seemed possible. Firmia herself understood the logic behind her grandparents' decisions, at least the ones she'd read about, listened to, or watched so far, but her disgust endured it all.
"How are you doing?"
"How are you doing? I've just finished having fun with Brant... I can't imagine how you must feel, swimming around those files. Please, take a break, for both our sakes." Hannah took off the jumpsuit she'd put on to work on Galatea's body, finding a hamper to toss it into. Getting the bed grease stained wouldn't do either of them any good, Galatea's specifics had been touchy to find and shape certain parts for.
Sliding in with her T-shirt and shorts, Hannah collapsed next to Firmia, finding her previous wall plug and trying her best to get the most energy she could from it. "How long have you been going through those notes, Firmia?"
"I've been at this whenever there wasn't something more important to do," Firmia admitted, her weary eyes still on the screen. Like a moth to a flame, she felt compelled to endure the records for the sake of knowing. "I can't help it. Everything's starting to make sense and that's ... definitely a welcome improvement. Sort of ..."
"Firmia..." Hannah sat up just a bit, extending her charge chord enough to sit up properly, before gently turning Firmia's face away from the screen with the other hand. "A small break... For me? Just enough to rest your mind and let it sit away from everything else."
"... okay ..." Firmia supposed she wasn't gleaning as much in her current state, and she had circled back to things she'd already read ... and for clarity she wasn't quite getting, either. Having to sleep was a real pain when there was so much that needed doing.
Hannah smiled, sitting up properly, brushing her arm up against Firmia's. "How did setting up the T-Link go? No issues with integrating it into the ship?" Something else to talk about would be good for now. Firmia needed something other than her family's corruption.
"It was ready when I got there, but ..." Firmia paused, thinking back to her first test run. Everything had gone fine, but she hoped one particular issue would be solved by daybreak. "... there's just something awkward about wearing a helmet on the bridge, especially when I was the only one. I asked them to make a smaller headpiece I could use. Everything else went just fine, but I won't know about the headpiece until morning."
Tired as she was, Firmia could still feel the significance in what she was doing. She'd never heard of a TK fighting from the bridge of a ship before. Even if she wasn't the first in actual fact, Firmia was prepared to be the first on record. Might as well see how far she could take this while she was at it.
"Depending on how our battle goes, I'm going to look into more uses for the T-Link besides the funnels."
"Ah... Haha, heh. Hee... That sounds really cute, to be honest. You there, awkward, wearing a helmet to use the T-Link in front of everyone else. Ahh, that's mean of me... But I'm glad it's working, at least. I'm sure the mechanics can fashion you something more captain like than a full helmet." Hannah was smiling properly again, at least. Firmia in a helmet like that... She couldn't stifle another giggle, patting Firmia's hair gently.
"What other ideas did you have in mind?"
Not cute, Firmia thought ... embarrassing. Maybe if she didn't also have to wear the SKIN suit and could bulk up her attire a little. As is, it was unbearably awkward. Fortunately that problem was already on its way out.
Since Hannah was curious, Firmia lifted up her tablet again and began navigating away from the journal files and toward her own personal projects. "Just using the T-Link to control funnels is inefficient. I'd even go as far as saying it's a bad idea considering we only have one to spare, right now. We might as well install AIs into each funnel if that's all I'm going to use it for. I want to be able to control other parts of the ship through the T-Link if necessary." Complete control of the ship through some headgear. That sounded nice~
"Controlling the whole ship sounds like a rather taxing venture on your mind," Hannah began, cozying up just a bit more... She realized the wasn't under the covers, taking a moment to remedy that. She didn't feel temperature like a human would, but monitoring how it was under here could help her regulate her own to keep Firmia more comfortable.
Actually... "Do you, mind me getting close? Hugging you, I know you're growing to put up with, but this is a bed, and if my research is any indication, the atmosphere here is something different... So... I can nudge myself over if that is what you would prefer."
"I wouldn't be micromanaging everything," Firmia mumbled, hoping that would give Hannah a better picture. Really, Firmia was more interested in being able to bypass the normal manual and location specific inputs in an emergency. Otherwise, it was probably more trouble than it was worth, especially since Galatea or Brant's AIs could handle the same tasks via voice command. The more she thought about it, the more it made sense that there probably hadn't been any TK captains using T-Links on the bridge, yet. It was seeming fairly situational at best ...
When Hannah asked if she minded being hugged, Firmia felt two answers pop up. She tried pasting them together before she spoke up. "I am getting used to it, yes. I don't really mind. As far as the atmosphere ... isn't that what you're going for?" she asked, trying to smile accusingly but just barely managing through the fatigue.
"Well... Y-Yes, but... I..." Hannah fumbled with how to respond to that, unable to process a proper response quick enough. She (would have) flushed, sighing and sinking into the mattress a bit more. "I don't want to physically move too quickly for you. So... I don't... I don't know if I should push things with your plate so full already... On the other hand," she began, a mildly dour look forming on her face, "the chance we all die tomorrow is greater than zero."
It was a grim reminder, Hannah had run several calculations based on hypothetical data of the machine from the video, their chances of survival were actually not that high. Even taking the sheer bulk of the Riese into account, fighting such a monster would take ace piloting from both crews, and near everyone on base, and that was assuming it came with few reinforcements. The more soldiers Apotheosis could afford to throw at them, the lower their chances got.
"That isn't an excuse to push things beyond your comfort zone... But if I were facing down my end tomorrow, I would have several regrets, if I... I-I..." Hannah closed her eyes, sighing quietly. "Didn't at least try to kiss you, tonight..."
Firmia supposed if Apotheosis was going all out then things could get bad, tomorrow. If they were serious about overrunning ANF HQ, they would definitely be bringing their best. Firmia was expecting Louise, Vera, Carlos, whoever that cyber TK from Corona Ten was, and possibly even some new faces, piloting new machines. It would be nice if they could rule out the Sacarians, but even some of them appeared, careful timing and coordination might still see a hard won victory. Best not to think about potential casualties on their side and just do what she could to protect her people ...
"Mph, you worry about strange things ..." Firmia said, trying to lean closer to close the minor gap between them.
Hannah snuggled in a bit closer and rested her head against Firmia as the girl moved in some, taking it as a signal that she could. "Of course, I'm worrying about plenty more. I'm worried about if the Mantle will stand up to the unknown specifics of machines we haven't seen. I'm worried that Brant having a new copilot may throw him off and cause issues, even if they are getting along. I'm worried about the Avalon being targeted for its size, and without the same shields as the Riese, taking a punishing hit. I'm worried about a lot... And I'm worried about you. You've learned far, far too much. I won't say that it's a bad thing, you would've learned some day, but..."
Hannah sighed once again, gently putting an arm behind Firmia, so she could bend it up to hold her head again. "Right now, with everything else weighing you down... Look at how tired you are. And you have to fight tomorrow? I'm... I'm so worried about you." Hannah bit her lip. "And for me to push my feelings now, I'm simply adding more to it, aren't I? For all the help I give, I also hinder..."
Those were some ... legitimate worries, Firmia had to admit. Still, she didn't see Hannah hindering her in any way, the android's bizarre preference for close encounters notwithstanding. "I ... probably should come up with some kind of contingency plan ... but I'm just too tired, now. Too much reading. I'll do it in the morning if there's time. For now, just ... try to remember that we've already made it this far together. And ..." she force a smile as best she could, "try to remember that ... Apotheosis really sucks at battle plans."
"My processors don't let me fear beyond a certain point, as it would hinder things further. You don't have to worry about me breaking down with worry, or getting scared to the point of it affecting my piloting. I trust all of us. There isn't a single person in our circle that gives me cause to worry... There are simply too many unknowns outside of us, to know with confidence, that things will turn out just fine. Never the less, I will do my best."
I was supposed to be here to help her, and yet, here I am being reassured... How silly. Hannah smiled, without needing to force it, pressing her forehead to Firmia's. "I'm supposed to be the one helping you with your worries, not you consoling mine. Geez... I love you. Is there anything I can do for you, before you try and get some sleep?"
Things probably wouldn't turn out as well as they usually did, and admittedly the Heion Riese crew getting torn up over Nikolai was cause for concern from a morale standpoint. It was classic victory disease, considering no one on their side had even been killed yet. As far as Firmia knew she had something of a similar weakness building from the combination of her time aboard that ship and her feelings for the people around her. There were no unimportant pilots, no one she was sending out that she wouldn't be utterly devastated to lose in the upcoming battle. Everything was being put on the line by sheer necessity.
"In a way, you are helping." Firmia wasn't sure she wanted to get into the specifics of that, since there was some uninspiring psychology involved, but help was help. "I love you, too," she said, too sleepy to feel any embarrassment, "... that's why I want you to make sure that no matter what happens, you survive ..."
"Firmia..." All signs point to this being a horrible idea, and yet I still want to do it anyway. Is that a part of being human? If it is, then I suppose I don't mind... Hannah pressed herself forward the slightest bit and stole a kiss, relaxing back some after the moment, and watching for any sort of reaction. She probably looked too worried than necessary, but she had a few reasons to be, on this issue. "There's no way I'm getting shot down with you here waiting for me to come back."
The kiss came later than Firmia was expecting, but she was just glad that her mind was steadily going to sleep. No awkward reactions, embarrassment, reflexes, or anything of the sort. Oddly, she felt like she had just a little more control over herself than she otherwise would, which made gently returning Hannah's kiss easy and natural for her.
"Good," Firmia said, satisfied with Hannah's answers. "That's a lot less to worry about, then ..."
Firmia was... Incredibly tired. It would be impossible to gauge a proper reaction to something like this until she was awake, but... To say that having the motion reciprocated, tired as it was, wasn't making her happy? Hannah was over the moon, resisting a powerful urge to pull Firmia into a tight hug. She settled on a gentle one, kissing her forehead once more, smiling wide.
"I'll be just fine. So will Brant and Chris... We'll all come back smiling, so get some rest. You've earned it."
Actually, things from last night were still slightly hazy, and most of the details Firmia recalled easily involved the journal, but so far, Hannah's reassurances were panning out. If they could take down Louise before the battleships closed in, they wouldn't have their formation scattered and could keep using said formation as a cudgel to pulverize Apotheosis one group at a time.
" ... Tonya, don't let her hit us! Flores, target the joints for now! ... and eventually the cockpit," Firmia murmured bitterly to herself toward the end of her orders. She tried to stay focused on her pilots and on the battle, leaving the revelations of the Alkaev Journal to her subconscious mind. She knew there was a way to help Brant, one that would almost certainly work ... but first they had a battle to win.
"... I'm fine now, Brant," Chris managed, still gritting her teeth, still angry, but not to the point of shaking. Louise was pitiful at this point. "We kill her and end this nonsense. That's all there is to it." Killing her was more than she deserved.
"All units, it appears the enemy machine has assumed more fluid motions. Hard as I find it to believe, I think Louise has synced her machine to herself. Be wary of much quicker reactions and motions!"
Hannahlyze the Regina again!
"You think this is about my legs? ABOUT MY FUCKING LEGS!? HAHAHAHAHAA!" Louise lost it further, cackles echoing onto the battlefield. "Elaine, Elaine you poor, sweet, naive little girl, do you know what it feels like? To lay there, unable to move, as everyone you care about dies around you!? As you can't reach the console to turn off your radio, and they keep screaming, they keep screaming and dying and you can't do anything about it! You can't stop it, you can't save it, you can't even escape it! All you can do is listen, until every last one of them stops... And they leave you there to die, because they figured you for dead, already. Do you know, what that feels like? That's why he has to die! And I'm going to make sure he does!"
The group was understandably focusing their efforts on stopping Louise, and it had been such an impact that she could no longer afford to be a one-track mind. In fact, this turn to self-destructive anger was... somewhat saddening. Even Makoto could see she wasn't in her right mind.
It was somewhat disheartening to see the powerlevel was so skewed that Makoto had done nothing during this battle. Makoto couldn't possibly aim his heavy weaponry at Louise from this range, but even then it'd take all of him to reach parity with his allies' strength. It was a strange juxtaposition, to feel looked down by somebody who believed to be looked down upon, having her own conflicts. It didn't matter, in the end.
"You're not killing anybody without going through me." Bold words, the tiny mech held its position despite the height difference. It could easily be crushed, but it seemed Makoto had made his peace, in a sense. "Whatever you feel, I can't condone it if it led to what Colony 1 suffered." It was pure terrorism. Even if he was so outmatched, Makoto wouldn't bow down to that.
"No matter what, you're not killing a soul!" Shetting shields to full power, Makoto charged.
"You are insignificant," Louise muttered, as all the effort in Makoto's attack was dodged without a care. "Now die like the rest!" An open hand came down to crush the machine, compacting it against the pavement... Lucky for Makoto, the ashfault of the base road gave out before his machine did. Louise didnt bother to check if he was still alive, satisfied with swatting an annoying fly.
"Understood, Captain." Marcia began, before looking over the scanners at her station and noticing something of import. Smiling at the revelation, though it wasn't without worry, Marcia turned up towards Firmia.
"Alternatively, Captain... scans indicate that the Regina's E-field has gone offline. It's charging power for something... probably nothing good, but without that layer of protection, we might be able to get a heavy hit on the centre of mass and cockpit from this range." The weapons operator noted, looking over the numbers on her console.
"Merlin, if you can move in to assist, I should be able to get off two salvos with the main guns before it can react properly to us."
Marcia casts Strike
