mucle weight > fat weight, so if you gained muscle you can gain weight.

For example, I'm technically nowhere near overfat. However, the reason I'm technically usually close to the border is because of muscle. If I didn't have so much muscle, I'd probably weight low 170's to high 160's. (maybe) That's also why football players exercise so much, but wind up being very heavy.
