Dawn Brigade is famous for two things. Not having proper characterization and having huge difficulty spike in Part 3 chapters due to a dearth of exp. Dawn Brigade actually has more chapters than Greil Mercs, the issue is that the Greil Mercs all start promoted while the Dawn Brigade needs to wade through the trainee tier of the faux three class system, putting them significantly behind.

But is this a bad thing? Isn't it gameplay story integration? Micaiah's group are less experienced and are narratively outmatched by Ike. Isn't it good that this is reflected in gameplay? And, I don't know about you, but the Dawn Brigade chapters are some of the most memorable in the game, while the early part 3 chapters, the easiest ones, are some of the least memorable. People seem to treat this imbalance as an issue, but maybe it's making both a better story and a more fun gameplay experience.

I think that the the Dawn Brigade beginning at lower strength than the Greil Mercenaries is a great way to emphasize the struggle the Daein liberation movement is going through. I think what may benefit transitioning the Dawn Brigade into the unified Armies of Parts 3/4 is increasing the base level and stats of the Dawn Brigade members. Meg starting at level 3 is just a non-starter in tryin to create a usable unit. Fiona coming in at level 8 (9?) when most units are in the mid teens is a slap in the face. Additionally, I think having more Master Seals available in Part 1 would help set up the Dawn Brigade for Part 3. I don't think there is much necessary change for Dawn Brigade chapters in part 3. Maybe adding some more experience potential may help their curve, but I don't know if it's necessary.

Here's a thought I had. The personal I hate most is Cyril's: being Aptitude. This skill buffs your growths by 20% each. Sounds good... except, it *only means something when it's not a personal and/or can be passed down. Since it *is* a personal, it's not really a "skill": more a giant sign that says "Hey, everybody, I have the best growth rates in the cast."

Yeah, I was gonna say Cyril because he, functionally, has no personal skill.

~...okay Bernie's weapon is actually awesome in animation, they've really been stepping up on their tomes lately.
But... why does she have to inflict damage to her allies as well? There aren't a whole lot of units who want to be 1 point below their max HP. Sealed Falchion is pretty much the only one I can think of immediately.

It's also a counter to weapons that want the opponent's HP = 100%, like Shannan's Balmung or Legendary Chrom's Randgríðr. Conversely, it also can activate enemy Thrasir's Killing Intent a penalty isn't already inflicted. So, it's good in some places, bad in others.

If everyone else is ready, I will begin the drafting process.

I'm not bitter List Randomizer. I just wanna talk.

We'll begin with @Bjarne. Remember to begin with FE9 characters, and if your choice has an *, choose an additional FE10 alternate.

  5. Only English since my mom doesn't even speak Spanish and only my paternal great-aunt speaks Hawaiian so that's also a bust. However, I am learning Italian at Uni currently (third semester). Unfortunately, my Italian class is online-only for second-semester Italian on (first semester was in a normal class). As such, there's almost no opportunity to practice with other students, and since distanced learning, it's even harder.

  6. I was in a particular mood about an hour ago, one that made me really wanna do a draft of of these games. As such, I played around with the generic rules for both of these games to make a transfer draft ruleset. Looking for 4 other people to join in.

    Drafting:
    •    This draft is for 5 players
    •    Draft stretches across both FE9 and FE10
    •    This draft will be done on Hard Mode for both games
    •    Ike, Titania, Micaiah, the Herons, the Black Knight, and Lehran are free for all to use

    •    Any of the three laguz options are free for FE9 Endgame
    •    Sothe, Geoffrey, Jill, and Lucia are free for FE10. If these units are drafted for FE9, you may choose one FE10 exclusive unit to draft additionally.
    •    Haar is banned for FE10
    •    Haar and Largo are draftable for FE9 and allows for the same rule as the units in the above rule.
    •    The draft will go for 12 rounds
    •    Drafting will begin with FE9 characters, then move on to FE10 characters. The only exception are the special cases listed above
    •    Drafting will follow a "1-2-3-4-5-5-4-3-2-1-1..." order

    Rules:
    •    Undrafted units may recruit characters, Rescue and Shove/Smite undrafted characters and NPCs, trade, Escape/Arrive, find hidden items, and transfer items/skills between teams.
    •    Undrafted units may not do anything not listed above, including but not limited to meatshielding, building Supports, opening Doors and Chests, and giving Blood Tide/Night Tide/White Pool bonuses.
    •    Partner and Other units may do as they please without penalty.
    •    Defend chapters count the last played Player Phase for turns if the timer is waited out.
    •    FE9 Chapter 27, Part 2 is not counted for final turncounts.
    •    Transfer bonuses are allowed and expected

    Exceptions:
    •    Reyson and Janaff/Ulki may be used to obtain the Knight Ring if undrafted. They may not perform any other disallowed actions without penalty.
    •    One of Edward or Nolan is free for each of 1-P, 1-1 and 1-2.
    •    Volug is free for 1-5.
    •    Elincia, Marcia and Nealuchi are free for 2-P
    •    Nephenee and Brom are free for 2-1.
    •    One undrafted unit is free for 2-2.
    •    One undrafted, 7 move unit is free for 3-1.
    •    One undrafted, 6 move unit is free for 3-3

  7. I'm back!

You may be wondering "Why did it take so long for Shimmerfang to update?" Well, it was because I got stuck on Chapter 8 for almost a year. I was so frustrated and despairing that I pondered just giving up. But a few weeks ago, I decided "No, I will not give up!" So I restarted the run.

It went quite a bit better than my first attempt, and I was able to get all the way to Endgame with comparative ease. Hopefully, I will be able to keep this momentum going, but I'm not looking forward to Elincia's Gambit T-T.

Part 1 Chapter 8: Glory Unwanted

    Turns – 13/96

This chapter is the reason that it took me so long to update this draft. On my previous attempt, I only had Micaiah, Nolan, and Sothe for combat, and no matter what I did, they always ended up overwhelmed. After attempting to beat this chapter for months, I said “Screw it!” and restarted the run. I can say that it felt worth it once I finished this chapter.

Nolan’s ability to OHKO the mages is such a pleasant development. Sothe seemed to forget how to dodge, but I can forgive him for that. This draft is really making me appreciate Tormod and Co. during Part 1; they really do provide a good strength to work with.

Part 1 Chapter 9: One Survives

    Turns – 10/106

This chapter is kind of a meme, because it really is just The Black Knight Show ft. Micaiah. It has the potential to be very short or very long depending on how swiftly you can move through the chapter. But this means Endgame is here!!!

    Part 1 Endgame: Daien, Arise!

    Turns – 11/117

My favorite Part 1 chapter, Endgame has the possibility to be a really bad time. However, I think it went very well, in spite of a few missteps here or there. Black Knight taking the stairs is a great way to do it I find. It would have gone easier if Rafiel had Celerity, but it’s on Ilyana so she can ferry it to the GM. I would have tried to have Micaiah slay Jarod, but that would have been risky and add a turn, so overall, I’m happy I didn’t.

  8. The news recently has left me very tired and very demoralized. I was already a bit down, but the current state of affairs has put me in a very dark place. Yesterday I even removed Twitter from my phone just so I could stop thinking about the issues that are going on. Which was hard for me, because I care a lot about current affairs and believe that staying informed is important.

For now, I'm just going to wish everyone here the best and I hope that you are all safe. Take care of yourselves the best that you can, and try to find some positives in these times.

A class-wide leveling system wouldn't encourage people to use other units.  It'd either just make it easier to use crummy units without actually investing in them or it'd encourage you to only use a particular set of units that are already ahead of others in terms of stats.  It'd make a character like Seth trivialize the battlefield even more than he does, and a unit like Mozu or Est wouldn't need to risk their lives to become good (unless it doesn't take into account unit disparity among classes, in which case they'd never get to be good - well, maybe Mozu eventually, but not Est).  This system would just go against the design philosophy behind FE's unit identity differentiation and how it's meant to impact a player's playstyle.

Well, if a system like this was implemented, the units would have to be balanced with them in mind. Plus, classes really need to be rebalanced a bit more anyhow, so that any unit type isn't centralized, like fliers or mounts.

Not letting the player choose how they want to play the game is inherent bad game design. If people want to beat the game using only a few choice units, then they should be allowed to do so, and not forced to use other units because of some crappy game mechanic.

I just really enjoy the ability to use whoever I'd like for a map, but it's not really an option for FE games. If someone wants to use a different unit for a map, I feel like it is better if they can.

  10. 2 hours ago, NinjaMonkey said:

Hard Mode literally says that it's designed so the enemies will often be at a higher level than you. What's the point of saying that, and then increasing the experience gains, effectively making the game easier?

I only said that because level factored into EXP calculations (as far as I can recall). And I only said this to support the possible idea of playing as the Dawn Brigade in in 3-E.

I wasn't really complaining... I actually like Three Houses a lot and appreciate it for what it is. I just made the thread to share and discuss about an aspect of the game franchise that I think is interesting and unappreciated. Basically i'm trying to hard sell FE3.

To everyone reading right now, please play FE3; it's a 10/10 masterpiece.

While there is a genuine possibility I'd really enjoy FE3, there is also the unquestionable fact that I have a hard time playing older games. GBA is the farthest I can go back without pulling my hair out. It's the reason that I have never gotten past FE4 chapter 3 in any attempted run.

  12. 7 minutes ago, NinjaMonkey said:

Picking the Dawn Brigade in 3-Endgame will make the chapter unwinnable, as you'll be going against a team of nearly all third tier units, while using a bunch of second tier units.

In this hypothetical remake, they could do some tweaks to make it so the Dawn Brigade is also at 3rd tier. Like, increasing experience gains in Part 1 with higher level, but otherwise same difficulty, enemies. And adding a few more available seals and crowns would also help with that.

  13. So, one of my favorite game series is Valkyria Chronicles, and one thing that game does is have units level based on class. If something were to be implemented like this in FE, I'd prefer it to be instead that units all level up by chapter. One benefit to this is that it allows for the use of the entire cast, as units can be swapped out freely by map when the situation necessitates. It does come at the cost of the ability to train units, and it may not pair well with RNG growth systems.

How would you feel if something like this appeared in FE.

  14. Just now, Xenomata said:

Rein at least has the excuse of Brave weapons being the only thing he ever had equipped. Wasn't Thani just Micaiah's version of the Rapier?

TO be fair, Thani was the only thing that kept Miccy dear from being a dead weight in RD. It let her do more than chip.

  15. I don't believe that staves need to be considered light magic in the first place. Very few games in the series has dark magic = bad. Most have dark magic either not mentioned in detail, or just controversial. I think it'd be better if light and dark magic appeared more, so we could see the differences between the two in greater detail.

I like to think best that staves are just regarded as neutral heal/support class magic. It makes classes like Falcoknight and Maid, who can use staves but aren't "light" or "dark" classes make more sense too.

  16. I was gonna do these unaided, but then I remembered that PM1 exists and I really want more orbs for more Narcians. Didn't do Abyssal though, because lol accessories. I' always impressed seeing what everyone here does though. Y'all are much harder working than me.
