Why does Ryunosuke have different hair colors?

Or is the one at the top a younger version?

The investigation segments of AA are in first person, so Ryunosuke is only in the first image. The blond guy (and the alleged friend-eater) is the one and only Herlock Sholmes.

It turns out Backloggd as a function where it tells you how many of those games you've played; I've played four games from that list (Super Metroid, Fusion, Samus Returns, and Luigi's Mansion 3), though Super Metroid was the only one of those I played this year. I played five out of eight of your masterpiece club on the other hand.

  3. After six/four years, The Great Ace Attorney games have finally been released outside Japan! You can talk about them here.

Personally I never expected these games to be leave Japan, but fortunately I never spoiled myself on the majority of their plot twists. I'd recommend putting significant information on the cases in spoiler tags for people who want to go in blind.

I myself have finished the first two cases, so here are my thoughts on the two of them.

    Case 1:

    Spoiler

I like how the case balances Ryunosuke standing on his own and Kazuma helping him, with Ryunosuke becoming more confident as the case goes on. Kazuma carries the trial more in the beginning but still feels present and helpful as it goes on, so he and Ryunosuke feel like a proper team. Kazuma feeling lost and defeated at some points also helps to establish Ryunosuke as a skilled lawyer-to-be by being the one to solve the problem they're in.

Auchi is just as smug and pathetic as you'd expect from a Payne, but this Payne also a Japanese traditionalist. He fawns over Brett just like his descendant Winston did with Dahlia, though in this case it's because she's British.

I've heard people say this trial is too long and I agree to some extent, since it could've ended after it was revealed how Wilson was poisoned. But on the other hand I enjoyed how the end of the case tied into the missing coin from the beginning, and it gives Kazuma more screen time. Brett is a good villain and she basically gets away with murdering Wilson, but we don't get her motive here so she'll probably be back later.

    Case 2:

    Spoiler

Before playing the case I knew it would take place on a ship, which made me wonder how the trial would be handled. As it turns out there is no trial, and it's the first non-Investigations case with that distinction. I think it was an interesting choice and I prefer it to somehow forcing in a trial segment just because. It seems van Zieks will have to wait for the next case to be introduced.

Oh no, Kazuma got Mia'd! And there isn't even a spirit medium around to bring him back. The previous case emphasized how he has a secret mission, so we'll probably find out about it eventually even if Kazuma himself is gone.

Susato is properly introduced here, and in a twist she's mildly antagonistic toward Ryunosuke at the beginning. She's overall more collected than Maya and Trucy but still has some less serious qualities, like her being a fan of Herlock.

Hosonaga is back, hooray! I was hoping he would be a recurring character after the previous case.

We are also introduced to the man, the myth, the legend himself, Herlock ShoImes. I wasn't too big on the idea of him before the localization was announced, but I've warmed up to him now; it's probably because I like him more as a character inspired by Sherlock Holmes rather than him being Sherlock Holmes. I appreciate that he's eccentric but not dumb, and I like the running gag of him hanging around in weird places just offscreen. Ryunosuke thinking "won't someone please help me?" and Sholmes just hanging around in a corner was great.

Nikolina is one of the more interesting culprits in the series. She's by far the youngest culprit in the series (the next youngest if I recall being Dahlia in 3-4), essentially a child trying to escape a bad situation, and she never acts smug or malicious toward the heroes in a "Mwahaha, you'll never prove that I did it!" way. It also denies Ryunosuke and Susato the satisfaction of catching Kazuma's killer, since it was just a big mess of accidents. Strogenov looking out for her is sweet, even if it involves framing Ryunosuke for Kazuma's death.

Midway through the case I suspected that putting the snake in the intro might be a red herring in regard to Nikolina's pet, and sure enough she has a cat and the snake belongs to Strogenov. I learned later that this case is inspired by the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Speckled Band, where the "speckled band" actually was a venomous snake, and in hindsight this case is a fun tribute to that story.

  4. I've personally never expected Crash for Ultimate because even if Nintendo is interested in him, I don't expect Activision to play along. Crash wasn't in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale because Activision wanted too much money, and that was back when Activision wasn't doing anything with him. Sure, Nintendo could pay a ridiculous fee for him but that doesn't mean they'd want to.

Doesn't this list exclude arcade sales? That's really unfair to fighting games isn't it? let alone everything else that has come out for arcades. I could pump sixty dollars worth of quarters into a mortal Kombat machine and that doesn't count for a sale under any metric. Heck, we don't even know if an individual, five hundred dollar cabinet sold to an arcade even counts as one sale. I highly doubt Crash has made comparable money to street fighter, mortal kombat, or Tekken.

The original Pac-Man has made several billion dollars in quarters since its release, but I haven't found a firm number of how much it made in total. I've heard $12 billion as the total revenue, but I don't know how accurate that is.

I haven't looked into any data for specifically Japanese sales, but from the franchises I've listed there the ones that seem like they'd appeal more to the Japanese gamer base would be Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Mortal Kombat, even though I think Mortal Kombat has always been an American series it's always felt a lot like a Japanese game

Ha, Mortal Kombat hasn't been sold in Japan since 3 because it was incredibly unpopular, so that's definitely never happening. Smash Bros. has never saved the most popular character for last so I would expect as "smaller" third party as the last character if anything.

Godfrey be like "my Skills literally counter each other".

    Seriously tho:

    • Got the Guts - Reduces damage taken by 36% when HP is 30% or lower
    • Light of Justice - Restores 1.4% HP every second while HP is 30% or less

    ????????

It's not that contradictory, the damage reduction and healing are meant to help his Driver survive at low health until they can be healed. Whether those skills accomplish that goal is another matter I suppose.

    Pyra or Mythra?

And no, you can't answer both or Coffee with milk

Both/Coffee with Milk, but I think Pyra is unfairly dismissed as being "boring" and "generic" compared to Mythra so I'll give her an honorable mention.

We would've gotten that in Xenogears Episode III but Square Enix said lmao.

    Life is pain.

Technically speaking "Square Enix" didn't exist yet when Monolith Soft was founded, and Square actually said "we'd like to continue Xenogears but this Final Fantasy movie is more important." Doesn't Torna count as an ancient society you get to experience while it's alive?

.......what? Bro Erica's the pinnacle of modesty compared to Felicia, ain't no way the latter is a nun.

It's a shame Kamiya said no to Bayonetta appearing in PXZ2, then we could've had a trio of questionable nuns!

For the record, Kamiya said no because he wanted to be the one to make the game where Dante and Bayonetta finally meet, since he created them both. He has since regretted that decision, so maybe we'll get the nun trio if PXZ3 is ever made. So far Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has come closest to Dante and Bayonetta appearing together, as of the former getting a Mii costume.

Wait what, i don't remember this.

Godzilla Earth might not literally be a giant tree, but they are the central theme for him because trees are apparently the peak of evolution. You may have liked SP more, but you can't have forgotten about the other anime already.

    Spoiler

And if anything, Mechagodzilla would be called "Godzilla Machina" because Godzilla's other forms are named in Latin.

  10. I finished watching Singular Point, hooray. I didn't plan on watching more than one episode per day, but I had trouble putting it down (so to speak). It's more of a sci-fi mystery anime featuring Godzilla than a conventional Godzilla anime, but I don't mind that fact.

In recent years Godzilla has been a protector of Earth, a nuclear abomination, a giant tree, and now he's a reality-warping manifestation of a higher dimensional entity! He's basically the Icon of Sin from Doom Eternal, complete with warping reality, growing stronger the longer he is on Earth and threatening to destroy the universe, which means Jet Jaguar is Doomguy. Godzilla doesn't do much personally though; the recent Japanese depictions of Godzilla seem to present him as more of a concept that a character, which I think is interesting.

I said before I wanted Toho to give King Ghidorah and Mothra a break to focus on less exposed monsters, which is what happened here. Mothra gets referenced, but the reference isn't really important to the plot so it's more of a cameo. There's Godzilla, Rodan, Anguirus, Manda, Salunga, JJ, Kumonga and co., and basically it for the kaiju, but I enjoyed how they were reimagined. Having Godzilla's earlier forms be based on other kaiju was an interesting way to represent more monsters. While I like Salunga, I would rather if they made it less similar to Gabara so it could better stand out as its own character. I never expected to live in a universe where Eirika and beloved cinematic icon Jet Jaguar are voiced by the same person, but I'm glad I do.

I liked all of the human characters too, giving Yun and Mei largely separate plotlines that work together was fun. What is this, Fire Emblem Gaiden? I had a particular liking for BB, because quoting Dante in your introductory scene makes for a good first impression. He would be an obvious villain if he was in a Fire Emblem game, but he's actually the least shady of his associates. Also, it's interesting that almost nobody died in this series. Contrast the anime trilogy, where the number of named characters who survive to the end could be counted on one hand, including Godzilla.

And, of course, there's science. I didn't expect the series to focus on quantum physics when I started watching it, but I followed along well enough... I think. Mostly it's using particles for impossible physics (like giant monsters) and sending messages through time.

    Spoiler

So the song at the beginning of the series was actually transmitted from the future to upgrade Jet Jaguar so he can defeat Godzilla and activate the Orthogonal Diagonalizer. Because Godzilla may be powerful... but not as powerful as family. The Shiva supercomputer and the Godzilla skeleton are both singular points, which is why the message could be transferred from them both. The main point of Mei's plotline was to get Pelops II to the supercomputer so they could do just that, like how Team Godzilla's plotline in GvK culminated in pouring whisky on a computer. And JJ got big like the original Jet Jaguar!

Around midway through the series I started thinking that Ashihara was still alive, and sure enough he still exists in cyberspace... but he's also alive in reality and making Mechagodzilla! While MV Mechagodzilla wasn't made from a Godzilla skeleton like I speculated (though it was made from the remains of a different monster), that ended up being applied to a different Mechagodzilla instead. I wonder what plans they have in mind for him...

Xeno fans, which version of Xenoblade Chronicles is best to play for the first time? Is the 3DS version acceptable?

If you happen to already have the 3DS version and you don't want to buy the game again, or if you don't have a Switch, then it's fine, otherwise the Switch version is recommended.

Sylphie's clothes have a price, revenge is priceless.

By the way, do PXZ or PXZ2 have limits on how many units you can deploy? I haven't gotten far enough to find out.

  12. On episode 7 of Singular Point, Godzilla Phase II may not be Varan but he's basically Varan. He even uses Varan's roar! And I like what they did with the name of the whatever-you-call-it thingy that skewered not-Gabara: OD = Oxygen Destroyer. I didn't get the reference until it was spelled out however.

    Isn't Shinji considered a well-written character?

He is, but he's the usual target of jokes about being "whiny" which isn't fully warranted since he's willing to get into action whenever the situation calls for it.

In the second Rebuild movie, he got so angry about his not-girlfriend being eaten by a monster that he accidentally caused the apocalypse to save her... well, maybe.

  13. Something I like about the Xenoblade content in PXZ2 is that Fiora and Metal Face finally get to interact in this game. I always thought it was a missed opportunity that they never got to truly confront each other again after the opening incident.

So Aty (the new redhead) said she was a teacher and

Phoenix's expression is very fitting here.

In other news, by some miracle the final Evangelion movie is being released outside Japan next month. And here I was thinking I would have to wait two years to see it!

But hopefully they use the same English cast as the previous movies. I liked the Netflix voice actors well enough but it would be annoying for the last film of a tetralogy to have a completely different cast from the previous three.

  15. This is a real official thing that actually exists. The memes have gone too far this time...

*Godzilla Ultima wants to know your location*

Speaking of, where would Singular Point go on your Godzilla ranking? I'm only up to episode four so far. Technically Ready Player One has King Kong and Mechagodzilla in it, so they should be ranked too. And will the next Space Jam have Kong in it?

    1 minute ago, Armagon said:

    Now i will begin.

I have PXZ2 myself but it probably won't take very long for you to pass me, I'm only up to the Sword Art Online chapter. It's not actually Sword Art Online, but it's an online game so it's basically the same thing. What was it again, NetHack?

  16. I watched the first two episodes of Godzilla Singular Point today, which is good so far. It even got to a monster fight earlier than most Godzilla movies do, but I like the characters enough that there doesn't need to be non-stop action. Also, I was somewhat disappointed that MonsterVerse Rodan didn't use his signature roar, so it's nice to hear it again. Though Mei should've known better than to download a desktop assistant, even if it is voiced by Kira Buckland (and later Cassandra Lee Morris, because she can't get out of voicing nonhuman companions), lest she end up like Joel.

  17. It turns out Kazuya is pretty fun to play as, once you find some moves you're good with. As of him, the list of Ultimate's DLC codenames are:

    • Joker: jack
    • Hero: brave
    • Banjo & Kazooie: buddy
    • Terry: dolly
    • Byleth: master
    • Min Min: tantan
    • Steve: pickel
    • Sephiroth: edge
    • Pyra/Mythra: element (individually, Pyra is "eflame" and Mythra is "elight")
    • Kazuya: demon
    • As a bonus, Arsene is "doyle" and Rex is "diver"

The developers were lucky that eflame and elight didn't leak. Could it be referring to the two-in-one characters whose Japanese names mean "flame" and "light"?

  18. 1 hour ago, Armagon said:

Patch notes: Kazuya breaks out of the game and does the 10 hit combo on you.

Seriously, they gave this man literally everything. I don't wanna face this man in bracket lol.

It seems to me like Kazuya will be a god if you know how to play him, but terrible if you don't.

Also, Mythra's Lightning Buster previously had a glitch where it always treated the opponent's weight as being 100 (which made it weaker against lighter characters), but this patch fixed it.

  19. While I sort of appreciate how faithful Kazuya is to Tekken, I also know I'll never be able to play as him effectively. I have trouble remembering how to do Terry's inputs in the middle of battle, much less most of Kazuya's. I'm still glad that Tekken finally got a character.

While the Mii costumes were nothing like I predicted, again (though I like the costumes chosen), at least I have a good track record with the legendary spirits. And there are 39 Tekken songs, which is very impressive.

I gave up on predicting who will get in a long time ago, but characters I don't expect are:

    • Any Western characters
    • Characters from Microsoft, SE, and Namco (while companies could double dip I don't think they will)
    • Fighting game characters (I don't think we'd get two in a row)
    • Nintendo characters who don't appear in any Switch games (Byleth, Min Min, Pyra, and Mythra all come from them)

Strangely enough, Phoenix Wright is probably Capcom's biggest character left, since RE, MH, and DMC are out and I don't think we'd get another Street Fighter character right after Kazuya. SNK gave some of everything with Terry and I don't know how many viable characters Konami has left (Raiden? Pyramid Head?), so I mostly think the last character will be from Nintendo, Sega, a smaller Capcom series (like Phoenix or Amaterasu), or a new Japanese company. I sure can't wait to be wrong! Just get ready for the final character to be a Pokémon. It's strange the Koei Temco has absolutely nothing at this point, except Fatal Frame which it co-owns with Nintendo. Hopefully Ryu Hayabusa can be a Mii costume if he isn't the final character.

  20. I see the latest Mii costume wave as a set of "honorable mentions". Will the final Mii wave have more honorable mentions? Probably not, because I didn't get anything right about this wave or the previous one so I'll be wrong next time too.
