  1. My guess is "B2W2 as DLC Expansion Pass". But I wonder how they'd handle it. Would it be its own full campaign? Or would the B2W2 exclusive areas be added as post-game DLC? Or maybe mid-game, with level scaling? In my opinion, that's more likely than having a full, start-to-finish campaign.

Either way, it'd be neat to have Nate and Rosa as playable alternatives to Hilbert and Hilda, from the very start of the game. Also to see the B2W2 Easy/Challenge mode options thrown in to the game as a whole.

I quite like this idea!!! I'm not sure how I could make it work for the dawn brigade, or part 2 though really. By part 3 I have enough units that I could cycle them in and out without a problem though...

I could see it as an issue in Part I, especially starting in I-4, when the forced deploys become... undeployable. For Part II, though, I don't think it should really matter. Nephenee and Brom are forced deploys in II-2, as are the Crimean Royal Knights in II-E. Otherwise, there are no units with back-to-back chapter appearances.

One more thought - since there are no "back-to-back" chapters in Part IV, pre-Tower, the Fatigue condition becomes trivial there. It's up to the player whether they want to give themselves that leeway, or else treat, say, IV-P and IV-3 as "back-to-back". Of course, all this challenge is self-imposed, one way or another.

And thanks! It feels like the kind of self-constraint that can work in amy FE game. Honestly, I'm thinking of doing it myself...

  3. Here's an idea - a Fatigue run! Borrowing the concept of "Fatigue" from Thracia 776.

The idea is, every battle a unit gets into (both PP and EP) will increase their "Fatigue" by 1. This also applies to commands they use, such as "Shove", "Staff", and "Rescue" - but not "Wait" or "Talk". After the battle, they carry Fatigue over into the next map.

What's the penalty for Fatigue? Well, if it exceeds the unit's HP stat, then they cannot be deployed in the next chapter. For the chapter thereafter, however, their Fatigue resets to 0. Fatigue also resets to 0 if their is a "break" between maps, like I-8 to I-E, or II-E to III-9. The exception is forced deploys - while they will still accrue Fatigue, if they can't be benched, then they can't be benched. You can use them until they become bench-able.

He has 76 avoid vs. the Great Knights' 98 hit, so that gives them 2 hit against him after weapon triangle. Add Seliph to the equation and that goes down to 0 without anybody noticing.

Nice. Just a good strong sword dude.

My approach that I alluded to earlier was, I was able to trap Brian on a mountain tile. Because I killed most (all?) of his subordinates, his "retreat for reinforcements" AI kicked in. But because he was stuck, he couldn't actually go anywhere. And his retreat AI wouldn't let him attack, either. So, he became a non-entity.

Before seizing, there is one little surprise: Seliph did not randomly hook up with Lana, which I think the First Mate (?) said earlier is the most likely outcome if you don't pay attention to his love life.

Yeah, I think I made Seliph and Tinne happen, like, two playthroughs ago. Tinne technically has the highest love growth of any of Seliph's potential partners (+3 instead of +2 per turn). But I gave the edge to Lana, as she shows up much earlier, with 100 love points right out the gate. And Mana is even easier, because she and Seliph have a Vegas Wedding in chapter 8.

But even if this entire exposition dump turns out to be entirely sensible and consistent, I really dislike this way of presenting it. Apart from the pacing issue of Lewyn just barfing it out all at once, there's also no narrative weight to it. Seliph doesn't find out about anything by, say, finding an ancient temple in which the twelve gods are represented as dragon statues. He doesn't even find an ancient sage on top of the tallest mountain. No, the dingus who has been traveling with Seliph for almost the entirety of the second generation just didn't feel like explaining anything until now. Bleh.

7GTi1W6.png: "I am an endless barrel of exposition!"

Yeah, I'm also curious on the "how did you find out 'recently', Lewyn?" You spent time with Julia before delivering her to Seliph. Even if she didn't have a visible brand, I'd be surprised if no aura of "major Naga blood" presented itself to you. And this is aside from all the circumstantial evidence I mentioned earlier.

I don't understand why "Expositor McGee" has this large of a blind spot, when all the other relevant information comes effortlessly to him. It wouldn't change much of the story, except that he'd be more concerned when Julia disappears. And he wouldn't try to set her up with her half-brother. Hopefully.

Huh, that's weird. I could have sworn in my most recent playthrough I specifically noted how weird it was that Brian didn't appear in the chapter intro but but Radan did. Could this be variable based on pairings or something?

I will keep an eye out for it, on my current playthrough. It wouldn't surprise me either way.

Anyway, kinda funny to think that Brian, of all people, is the only "new face" here. We've already killed Hilda and Ishtar once, while Scorpio is just his dad again. And Julius has dropped in and out, including an in-battle appearance in the last map.

Just a thought, but maybe it would've been better if Julius didn't show up to save Ishtar and Arion. Instead, they find themselves "sucked into the earth" by a black hole. Think of it as an inverse version the "Return" staff, or like a "super-Rescue". The player is left wondering what happened to these two... until chapter 10, where Julius uses the same spell to remove himself, and Ishtar, from the field of battle. It'd put a bit more mystery into the enemy we're facing.

Of course, some players would prefer more time seeing the antagonist. So it's not as though the existing oresentation is a "problem" that needs to be fixed, necessarily.

I'll take this as evidence that Lewyn doesn't actually know who Julia is, or even that she has Naga blood. I think that came up recently in the thread?

Jeez, Lewyn. Either he doesn't know, or he just pretends not to. If he's actually ignorant of Julia's origin... that's a pretty glaring blind spot. He already mentioned that Julius is Deirdre's son, making him Seliph's half-brother. He also discovered a girl... at the same age... in the same location... with nearly the same name as Julius. Who also has the same class and hair color as Deirdre. I don't understand how he's not connecting the dots. Hell, given what the ending reveals about Lewyn, it's bewildering that he'd need to connect any dots in the first place.

Definitely like this proposed handling of Saias! A Gotoh is something both generations is missing. Both generations are very front-loaded, with no recruitables in the last two chapters of each. Even with these stats, Nihil, and Valflame access, I don't think he'd be "broken". With only 5 move in High Priest, it's not like he would keep up in efficient play - without lots of Dance, Rescue, or Warp use.

Or did Galle's followers managed to pick it up off his dead body without Heim noticing and it spent the last century enshrined in the Yied Shrine with Manfroy having it the entire time?

Let's have him zoom across mountains warping himself around the final chapter, not with infinite range ala Thracia of course, no with the physic and status staff ranges Genealogy has. Because those 10 tile Genealogy ranges are all tile in Thracia because it is smaller.

And in regards to Alvis naming Julia heir, I meant to say it above, but the big problem with that is that Julia was missing presumed dead for years now.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if people knew Julia was alive and on Seliph's army, or presumed her dead. Either way would be a problem, but the latter especially.

Wait... how did Arvis become Emperor in the first place? King Azmur stipulated that his successor would be a male child of Arvis and Dierdre with Major Naga blood. Until such a child reached maturity, Arvis would serve as Regent. Now obviously, those traits were split between two children, so it's not clear which one has a stronger claim to succeed Azmur. But in either case, while Arvis might be the next Ruler of Grannvale, I don't see how he could claim to be the next Emperor of Grannvale. ...Outside of, say, simply declaring himself Emperor. And nobody of influence being left alive to challenge such a declaration.

Anyway, if Arvis weren't Emperor, then Julius' immunity from being displaced would make more sense. Arvis' rule was never in-his-own-right, but only via his marriage to - and parentage of - descendants of Azmur. If he banishes Julius, he removes the only known surviving source of his own legitimacy.

That might be a goof. The Book of Nafa is in Belhalla? Because you get it in Velthomer in the next chapter. It being in Belhalla would change everything, as you'd need to go through Julius to get it. Of course the real goof is that the bad guys didn't just burn it and remove it entirely.

I would assume that, being a legendary tome, it can't be destroyed that easily. Of course, they can hide it.

And anyway, it's possible that the tome was in Belhalla before, and then they moved it to Velthomer. Perhaps they figured Seliph would be less likely to expect the Book to be at Velthomer?

Huh. These lines suggest that Arvis had tried to banish Julius once before (presumably after he got Loptyr'd). Obviously, it didn't stick.

I do wonder whether - as the Emperor - Arvis would have the power to name his own successor. Obviously, Julius would take the throne regardless. But if Arvis were to appoint, say, Julia in his will, it could contribute to more infighting amongst the houses. Thus hastening the Empire's (and Loptyr's) fall.

Seeing Arvis this pathetic is a bit hard to believe. I appreciate the shock effect - the mighty and prideful Arvis is now cowering in fear before Julius and Manfroy, not daring to defy their orders openly - but considering that gameplay is about to present him as a still incredibly powerful fighter, I have to question why he doesn't even make an attempt to stand up to Manfroy.

I mean, he kinda did, with his "how dare you" comment. And my interpretation of Manfroy showing up is, he immediately holds Julia's life in his hands. If Arvis were to attack him, Manfroy could kill Julia, then and there. So of course, Arvis isn't going to do anything that would endanger his daughter.

It might've been interesting if Arvis had planted the seed of Manfroy using Julia as a pawn in the final chapter. Saying something like "I shudder to think what Manfroy might do to you... were your powers turned against the Liberation Army, they would be stopped dead in their tracks." Obviously, Arvis doesn't want Julia to be brainwashed - but at least that way, she'd have a chance to survive. Some reverse psychology to give her extra time. And Manfroy, in his arrogance, would take credit for Arvis' dastardly plan.

Daddy Lewyn is interesting because - while you obviously want him to pass down Forseti - I wouldn't call any of his pairings actively bad. Critical and Adept make for a really solid pair of skills, especially on kids who already have Pursuit (the Sword Twins and Faval). The Speed boost from Sety Holy Blood is always welcome. And Lewyn!Lana probably has the best post-promotion combat of any version, thanks to the skills and Elwind access.

Honestly, considered "on average" or "overall", Lewyn might be the best dad, period.

Res is such a binary stat in Genealogy: you either have enough to avoid being Status'ed and you're good, or you don't and you're bad. (The use of Res to reduce magic damage being, as always, not that important.)

Incidentally, FE4 is the only game I can think of where there's no way to incrase Res temporarily. No Ward or Barrier or Ensorcel Staff. No Pure Water. No Rally Res. The only way to increase it is by equipping certain weapons.

Personally, I like the way FE4 handles it. I much prefer "a point of Res gives either 0 or 100 Avoid against a status staff" as opposed to "a point of Res gives 5 Avoid against a status staff". Like, FE4 is the one game where I have use for the Silence Staff. In other games, it's almost certain to miss the targets I'd want it to hit.

That being said, I wouldn't be entirely against blackening up Miletos a bit of it were to get a few characters. It's in the south after all, and that's mostly what I'd care about when it comes to these things. Though, I suppose, Thracia is just as far south as well, and I don't think I'd react kindly to black Travant, but, idk, Miletos just feels sunnier because they used a dark palette for Thracia and a surprisingly bright one for Miletos.

Yeah, they're definitely not gonna "racebend" anyone who's been in Heroes, like Travant or Jamke, even if they're from southern nations. That said, we don't have anyone (named) from Miletos. So they could totally go for it, if they felt like. More likely "tan" than "black", though.

Hm... if Travant creates a problem... maybe they could say that the original inhabitants of Southern Thracia were darker-skinned? But when Dainn and Njorun split up, and the Kingdom of Thracia was founded, most of the original inhabitants were driven out. Either leaving overseas, or settling in neighboring Miletos.

Maybe Ishtar nearby Jungby, and Julius nearby Chalphy? That way, there's more of a choice - rush for home base (and deal with the tougher miniboss), or take the long way around (for a somewhat less threatening foe).

Come to think of it - this would've been, essentially, the path that Quan and friends took to meet up with Sigurd, way back in the Prologue. I like the idea of Leif, in particular, taking the journey his mother and father once did.

My "out there" idea for a Jugdral remake would be - expand Thracia 776 so that defeating Blume, then Travant, and reuniting Leonster, is almost all under Leif's army. Seliph liberates Isaach, but largely skips over Thracia to free Miletos instead. And maybe Verdane, if he has a spare afternoon. Then they reunite at Chalphy (hm, Edda might make more geographic sense), and take on the remaining Imperial forces as one.

Genealogy does have an unused item in its data called the "Charm Staff".💞 The Charm Staff wasn't programmed to do anything however, it's an incomplete item. In both the Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei franchises, Charm does precisely what you describe- render allies uncontrollable and turn them against their allies.

Huh, I had assumed that the Staff would have an effect similar to the same-named skill. Granting it to one of your allies. Except, the staff is チャーム (Chaamu), while the skill is カリスマ (Karisuma). So, "Charm" versus "Charisma". Not the same, really.

It has 1-10 range, so perhaps it was a status staff that could control enemies? Then again, it's A-rank, while the other status staves were B-rank. And other staves (Physic, Restore, Fortify, Rescue) also had 1-10 range. So, who's to say, after all?

    a. Why does the lord generally start out unhorsed? I'm pretty sure that out of FE1-4, only one lord starts with a mount, and he's of course considered one of the most busted units in the series. Might it have to do with encouraging the player to use the lord alongside their retinue, rather than have them charge face first into the enemy ranks?

That might be part of it. Thinking on it, very few Lords (Sigurd, Seliph, Eliwood, Ephraim, Eirika, Claude) gain any sort of mount in their "natural progression". Presumably, they want the Lord to feel different from "just another Cavalier". Also, in indoor Sieze maps, they have to sit on the very special chair to win. Kinda hard to do when you've got a horse underneath you.

On 4/16/2024 at 12:38 PM, Revier said:

    b. Does the bias towards cavalry have anything to do with the series' focus on royalty and nobility? After all, I know that mounts were major prestige symbols in the past, and their riders were often quite wealthy and of high stature. Obviously there were a fair few "ordinary" cavalrymen, but even these were immensely dwarved by their footed brethren.

Maybe? It's not always clear which characters are "noble" or "commoner", especially back in the days before support conversations. But ultimately, when our main character is a noble, they'd naturally have a noble retinue following them. In the case of Ike, it's explicitly mentioned that his cavalry - Oscar and Titania - previously served in the Crimean Royal Knights. As for Alm, the only Cavs he has among his commoner friends are those promoted semi-randomly from Villager.

It's worth noting that, even as early as FE4, Kaga and team seemed to recognize the inherent advantages of a mount. So, they tried to balance it out in certain ways. "Jamke has better combat stats than Midir." "Edain can use more Staves than Ethlyn." "Ayra and Chulainn get powerful sword skills that mounties can't inherit." Obviously, this didn't fully offset the mounted advantage, but it did suggest some recognition of the imbalance, and a limited attempt to redress it.

Interesting to think that Arthur and Tinne - if fathered by Azelle - can basically be "double cousins" with Ishtar and Ishtore. Obviously, Blume and Tailtiu were siblings, while Azelle and Hilda are both Velthomers.

Now, this chapter isn't just about freeing Miletos, it's also the triumphant return to Chalphy (so to speak, Seliph himself was never here, after all). But I'm wondering if the border region of Verdane and Grannvale would've made for a better stage for this: Splice together the maps of the prologue and Ch.1 and cut off the part west of Marpha, which is to say Nordion and Verdane Castle. Genoa could be the home castle, with the order of objectives being Marpha (optional) -> Evans -> Jungby -> Chalphy.

This would allow plenty of characters to visit emotionally charged locations: Marpha is where Seliph's parents first met, and for Bridget and Aideen's children, visiting their mothers' home would be a Big Deal, as well. I wouldn't add Nordion to the map, but Ares and Raquesis's kids could have some dialogue talking about being close to home, too. Taking a quick peek at the endgame's map, you'd have to reshuffle enemies a little bit (seems that André jr. will arrive from the direction of Jungby, which would make less sense if Seliph had already captured it), but I think it could work quite well.

That'd be a cool way to do it. Honestly, they could leave Scorpio and the Beigenritter in charge of Castle Jungby. Would be more interesting than... uh... whoever's in charge of the southwest castle in Miletos. Let Hilda run Evans, and give Marpha to a Loptyrman, and we're golden.

I mean, it's kinda nice to see Miletos... but it's also the portion of the continent with the least lore. Who was running the place before Grannvale? What is their culture like? What are the people from there even called? Is there literally a single named "Miletosian" whom we can identify?

This shifts it from Manfroy just being super naturally capable (until he isn't) to Julia being an idiot.

Yeah, that could work fine. Maybe have Julia leave overnight - assuming Seliph amd co are taking some time to rest before their assault on Chalphy. Without telling anyone, because they'd try to stop her. Then Manfroy could take advantage of her carelessness.

Also, would be nice if Manfroy canonically had a Berserk Staff. Or maybe a sort of "Super-Berserk", that doesn't wear off, and prevents her from attacking her new "allies". . Timeline/Multiverse Stories:

This makes me think of a phenomenon analyzed by one of my favorite YouTubers, Eddy Burback, in his video "Multiverse Fatigue". Might be worth checking out and reflecting upon, even if it's mostly about the MCU.

For my part, I broadly agree on "multiverse" as a narrative device being overused nowadays. It's possible to be tired of it, while still recognizing that individual works utilizing such a device can be great regardless. "Into the Spider-Verse" is one of my favorite animated films ever - in big part, I think, because of how character-centered it is. It's not a "crossover for crossover's sake" - instead, each other Spider-person impresses on Miles, and helps him grow into the role that was thrust upon him. The revolutionary animation style didn't hurt, either.

As for the answer to the question... uh, nothing I can really think of? Maybe I'm not an overly critical viewer. There's just so much media out there - free and paid, cable and streaming, in theaters or your local library, in print or on the web. So many stories, that if you're not seeing what you want - or seeing too much of what you don't - you can look somewhere else. Heck, in an age of fanfiction.net and AO3, you can write and share your own.

Sorry if this comes across as a kind of "toxic positivity", as that's in no way my goal. You're allowed to have whichever issues you have! I just don't think I feel the same way.

This also puts the Tornado spell into Leaf's inventory which... honestly seems not too bad. It's nice to have a very light 1-2 option, and Tornado makes up for his not-too-impressive Mag stat. He can pass his Flame Sword to Seliph, Ares or Oifey at the start of the next chapter.

So, the only potential Tornado users are Leif, Arthur, Tinne, Ced, and Coirpre. But of those, the latter four can only do so with Lewyn as their father. And the potential sons will have *-rank Wind and Forseti by default. So there's no real motive to give them Tornado. As such, Lewyn!Tinne is the only real competition Leif ever has for access to the Tornado.

Up to you whom you leave it with. Leif will have basically exclusive Bolganone access, but then again, Bolganone's higher Weight makes it less likely to Pursuit or Adept. Tinne can do Thoron regardless, which actually might be the better pick against the Rotenritter.

It's actually really kinda funny that there are no playable infantry classes with inherent A-rank in any offensive magic type. Like, who is writing these tomes that only a handful of people with the proper blood type can use? Unfortunately, it kinda undermines the magic types being threshed out. We have Wind Mages, but no Wind Sages. Or, maybe they could've made three types of War Mage: "Wind/Axe", "Fire/Lance", and "Thunder/Sword". Something along those lines.

    Spoiler

OldMan he may be, but good on him for looking no day older than he did almost 20 years ago.

Actually, that was his father. Very OldMan.

    Spoiler

I'm basing this on very little actual knowledge of the endgame, of course, but I'm not sure how valuable that additional staff user really is in the endgame. Even without Julia, you still have Lana, Fee, Leaf, Nanna, Tinni (in any ranked run, I'm sure she'll promote with ch.10's arena), and then Coirpre/Sharlow. How important is it really to have six instead of five? Even though not everybody can use all the important staves, I'm not convinced that it's that big a deal.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying Coirpre is a good unit, in any case. He might be the second-worst unit in gen II, after Hannibal. Oh, and in your listing of staffers, you actually forgot Ced!

I will say that, of these units, Nanna and Fee only have C-rank staves (unless Father Claud got around), while Leif tends to have a pretty meh Magic stat. So in the case of status staves, Coirpre will be one of your better options, especially with a magic daddy. 5 move sucks, but Lana is in the same spot, while Ced and Tinne are slightly better with 6. The Res boost (with Claud as his father) makes him resilient against enemy status staves and siege tomes - and likewise for Lene! You don't want your dancer sleeping on the job, after all.

    Spoiler

    Cry me a river.

@Saint Rubenio *flashes back to Pitfall Bridge map*

I'll be honest, I had to laugh a little at this. I know, there's the precedent of Julius saving Ishtar earlier, but since he and Arion didn't really have any connection at all, this is still an extremely contrived way of letting Arion return in endgame. Manfroy could've swooped in, all "Mwahahahahhh, I shall brainwash youuuuuu!", and it couldn't have been sillier.

I really like the idea that this might be Arion's and Julius' first time meeting. Like, he just warps in for this stranger who can use a super-powered weapon and shares a common enemy. And all his life, Arion will be forced to carry the indignity of having his skin saved by some edgy redheaded punk.

And Lene can do Vantage/Sleep Sword memes to get through the arena, so she'll cap out, too.)

I gave 'em an A. Not only does Coirpre become a mini-Charlot, but Leen gets 20 EXP per Dance. The defense boost usually helps, though it can occasionally make Miracle strats trickier. But this is just not a great way to do this.

Once answer could've been: Travant remains the main boss, and doesn't make his "suicide charge". After Seliph seizes the second-to-last castle, Travant orders Arion to retreat. The future of Thracia lay in his hands, and cannot afgord to die today. Arion, reluctantly, obliges his father's last command.

Travant wields the Gungnir, but is still slain in battle. After the battle, Altenna takes Gungnir with her. When she reunites with Arion in the final chapter, she gives the lance back, and offers him a choice - to join her, or else to duel to the death. He chooses the former.

One question to ask is - what will the theming of the next Paper Mario game be? I haven't played Princess Peach: Showtime! beyond the demo, but I know its trademark quality is presenting the player with different aesthetic themes and gameplay styles to go along with them. There's Mermaid Peach, Cowgirl Peach, Musketeer Peach, and many others - each inhabiting their own scene. Could a future Paper Mario game offer different settings, and specialized enemies to go along with them? Such as a Privateer Parakoopa in the Pirate World, or a Gunslinger Goomba in the Wild Wild West World.

Alternatively, what if the next game saw Mario travel through time? Or simply, various settings themed to particularly times and places? In Ancient Egypt, Mario might find himself faced with "Mummy Bones", whereas a "Samurai Guy" might be one of the foes in Edo Japan. Hang out with some "Koopunks" in 70's London, or "Gangnam Goombas" in 2010s Korea. ...Okay, maybe not that last one. But there's still potential, I swear!

Thinking on it, the first couple Paper Mario games were no strangers to visually distinguishing members of a given species... when it came to overworld generics. In Toad Town, Rogueport, and plenty of places around the world, there was plenty of variety. But whenever you faced Koopas in battle, they always look the same. ...I mean, they can look different, but only when it affects the gameplay. Stuff like "Dark Koopa" vs. "Koopa Troopa". ...Okay, the KP Koopas are an exception to this, but they kinda stand out on this front. The fact that you have to Tattle them - when they're just a Koopa and Paratroopa by any other color - is honestly kinda funny.

In any case, this has been kinda rambly. But broadly speaking, I'm on the side of "character design variation good". Either when it's thematic, or something as simple as a color swap. It'd be great to see more of it, in the next Paper Mario series entry.

Chad would've been just as strong regardless of whether I'd invested in Brad. So it's not like, by doing so, I've put myself in any worse a position.

The counter-argument is "the investment I gave Brad, I could've given to Tad instead". Maybe Tad, while not necessarily better than Chad, provides something that he's missing. Though I'd think Jolene would have Grubba dogpiled the moment he showed his face around the Pit again, after what he did to her brother and many other fighters. But the idea of a team up between the Spike/Clubba bosses is neat. (Also, you just inspired an idea for a Clubba boss duo in my Paper Mario: Star Patrol idea...)

Ooh, I like the name! Might have to implement that.

And yeah, this "Boss Rush" would be... dubiously canon at best. Like, I don't think if the Shadow Queen came back, that her first destination would be the Glitz Pit. But maybe Jolene could have sone nasty words to say about Grubba when he shows up? Or maybe "He's promised to be on his best behavior!" (Small text: "Fat chance of that...").

Happy to inspire! I've really enjoyed your idea, even if I haven't contributed a ton lately.

I think Paper Mario TRYD might actually have more female antagonists the male ones. I mean, the most prominent ones seem to err mostly female between the sirens and the Shadow Queen herself, outside of Grodus and Crump of course. I guess Chapter 3 has Grubba and Rawk Hawk (though did Jolene have an unwilling villainous alliance with them or something, can't quite remember details) and Cortez is male insonfar as a skeleton can have a gender. But the rest all seem to be gender ambiguous creatures. Even Doopliss seems to have been adopted into the sirens as a sister. And Bowser is assisted by Kammy Koopa. Hooktail is female too.

    Notable male enemies:

    Spoiler

    Lord Crump

    Rawk Hawk

    Grubba

    Cortez

    Grodus

    Gloomtail

    Bowser

    Notable female enemies:

    Spoiler

    Hooktail

    Beldam

    Marilyn

    Kammy Koopa

    Shadow Queen

    Notable gender-ambiguous enemies:

    Spoiler

    Blooper

    Doopliss

    Smorg

    Bonetail

Yeah, some of these placements are debatable. And there's an argument for including more minibosses, like Gus or the Armored Harriers (which would strengthen the male side). There's an imbalance, but not an overwhleming one.

One place where it's most severe, I'd say, is the Glitz Pit. There are a lot of named generic enemies there, like Cleftor, King K, and Master Crash. Anyway, I don't think a single one is explicitly female. They're all either male, or don't have a gender specified. Maybe there's a "locker room" argument, but Goombella, Flurrie, and Jolene don't seem to mind.

    1 hour ago, Lord_Brand said:

Bosses and villains, sure, but I'm talking common enemy encounters. Female Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Bob-ombs, Boos, etc. Or even more distinct species with female designs by default, such as Birdo. I think it'd be cool to see male and female variants fighting side-by-side, whether as simple genderswaps or as distinct foes with different tactics.

I do think this raises an interesting point of discussion, on the best way to represent gender diversity among genetic enemies. On the one hand, if we give the "Goombettes" lipstick and long eyelashes, then we're employing stereotypical symbology, and inadvertently reinforcing "male = default". But, if we make all the Goombas look the same, then people comimg in with "male = default" will be wondering "hey, where are all the girls?"

There are, of course, ways to draw distinction non-stereotypically. Pokemon did it with subtle differences in Gen IV - Floatzel having different stripes on the back, or male Bidoof having more "tail tufts". Although, even some of those, like Jellicent or Pikachu, kinda make me raise an eyebrow. For a comparable case: maybe the female Goombas could be a lighter shade, or the female Bob-Ombs could have longer fuses?

That said, given the general aesthetic of the Paper Mario games - and the Mario franchise as a whole - I'd expect explicit markers of "femaleness" over such subtle variations. Do I think that'd be a bad thing? ...Eh, not really. We personify most of these species, so it makes some degree of sense for them to share "gender markers" to reflect those in human societies. That's sorta how the partners go: Goombario's baseball cap vs. Goombella's ponytail, for instance. These are the sort of cultural flags players will expect, so I can't really fault the game for going along with them.

(Inb4 I use the Punies to inspire a genderless society).

Paper Mario: The Origami King is secretly the pinnacle of the series, because Birdo made an appearance.

I did consider having the partners be accompanied by associated supporters, such as Goombario and Goombaria. In Goombaria's case though, it just felt...kinda mean? I mean, sure, she's probably a bit older and tougher now, but still, she has that "little sister" energy that would make me feel bad for hitting her, even in a sports battle. Ditto for Goompapa and Goomama; I'm fond of Goombario's whole family, really. Still, the idea of facing the four younger members is interesting. Maybe Goompapa could use a hammer as a nod to the fact Goompa owned one, and Goompapa presumably used one when fixing Jeff the gate?

Hey now, the Great Gonzales is no sexist! If Goombaria wants a fight, then he'll stomp him with the same tenacity he would any male Goomba. In any case, depending on how much time's passed between these games, Goombaria in TTYD is probably as old as Goombario was in PM64. Maybe a touch older, even. Sure, Lady Bow hasn't visibly aged in her cameo... but she's dead!

    No Lakilulu?

...In my defense, I totally forgot that she exists. It'd be nice to see her team up with Lakilester, but I don't want to remove "Generic Lakitu" from the Pit. Alternatively, Lakilulu could have a team-up with Koopie Koo? Not exactly my own idea - in TTYD Hero Mode, she proves herself a fierce opponent. I might make a few tweaks. But for the time being...

    Round 3 is here!

Yes, after much anticipation, I'm finally delivering. Round 3 would become playable after two conditions are met: you've completed Round 2, and you've defeated the Shadow Queen. That's because it's designed as something of a Boss Rush. Including not only this game's bosses, but those of the original Paper Mario 64, as well. Most of them have seen their stats boosted, so that they present something of a challenge. Now, let's get into it!

    19. The Goombosses

    Spoiler

What would the Glitz Pit be without a first round against Goombas? Blue Goomba (12, 2, 0), Red Goomba (14, 2, 0), and King Goomba (20, 3, 0) make a return. The Blue Goomba has the Charge ability, while the Red Goomba can Multibonk up to 5 times consecutively. And don't try to jump on King Goomba's spiky new crown!

    18. Blooper Reel

    Spoiler

It's the Blooper (36, 3, 0) that Mario and Goombella faced all the way back in the prologue! But... now electrified? Go figure! Better not make contact, and be wary of its unguardable Lightning strike that hits both Mario and his partner.

    17. Ninjakoopa Troupe

    Spoiler

The Ninjakoopas (10, 2, 2) are back in all their colors: RedGreenYellowBlack, and... Purple? That's right - no TMNT parody would be complete without a little-known Koopa Sister! As before, they can form a stack, in which state, they'll be invulnerable. Of course, they're vulnerable to being flipped. But be warned - they've been training with the Shady Koopas. Flip 'em over, and face a furious tornado attack!

    16. Hooked on a Feeling

    Spoiler

Hooktail (40, 7, 3) is back, and she's overcome her fear of crickets! Good for her! Her fear of mice, though, is as real as ever. Using the right badge, or just sending Ms. Mowz to fight her, will reduce her Attack and Defense by 1 point each, up to 3 times.

    15. Tomb of the Koop

    Spoiler

Tutankoopa (60, 6, 0) has left his mastaba. But be warned, his stylish hat isn't just for show! In addition to throwing shells, he can summon Red Chomps (6, 5, 3) to make things more difficult for you.

    14. Boo-tonium

    Spoiler

We've already seen what happens when too many Boos join together... but how about an abundance of Dark Boos? Why, it's the one and only Atomic Dark Boo (80, 6, 0)! Similar attacks to the Atomic Boo, but with more power and a new aesthetic. Take too long to beat it, and it might spawn a Dark Boo (8, 5, 0) to join in the fun.

    13. Scourge of the Seas

    Spoiler

Hola, amigo! The undead Pirate Captain may help take you between Rogueport and Keelhaul Key, but this time, he's here for a scrap. Cortez (90, 6, 2) has three phases of 30 HP each, just like before. His four weapons are back, but there's an extra one. After all, where would an IS-made Pirate be without his Axe (6, 4, 1)? Sorry, Flurrie, but this one is too heavy for you to just Gale Force away.

    12. Venus Fire Trap

    Spoiler

Who could be spicier than the one and only Lava Piranha (80, 8, 1)? Its Lava Buds (12, 0, 0) will release Petit Piranhas (1, 9, 0), which can do serious damage and leave Mario, or his partner, with a burn. It can also shoot its own fireballs. Maybe an Ice Storm would freeze it in its tracks?

    11. Smorgasbord

    Spoiler

Curse you, Smorg (100, 5/10, 1), and your ability to form a working human pair of fingers! Really, though, they alternate between their Miasma and Pincher form. They might also steal members of the audience, and hold them captive - better save them!

    10. Tubba & Grubba

    Spoiler

This is the big one - the fight you need to win, to return to the Major Leagues. Tubba Blubba (15, 6, 0) might not sound too threatening, but beware - he won't take any damage until Macho Grubba (90, 6, 0) has been beaten. He brings back his abilities to boost his stats, make him dodgy, give him double attacks, etc. Beat Macho Grubba, and Tubba Blubba's Heart will return to him, making him vulnerable again.

    Bonus: Jr. Troopa

    Spoiler

It's Mario's old rival, and he's back to prove himself! As seen in his cameo, Jr. Troopa (120, 8, 2) will be in his spiky, winged version. You can't jump on him, but you also can't do any grounded attacks... alas, what is to be done? Watch out for his Swoop attack, and his ability to recover 10 HP at a time.

    9. Shy Guy Surprise

    Spoiler

Three enemies have made it out of the toybox, and they're coming for Mario. The Big Lantern Ghost (40, 5, 0) might be the scariest-looking, but just target his lantern, and he'll be little trouble. The Anti-Guy (50, 10, 0) is rather unassuming, but his misandry can really be problematic for Mario. Hiding in the back, the General Guy (30, 5, 3) can do some serious damage with a lightning attack - assuming his incandescent lightbulb doesn't get recalled, or shattered by Mario.

    8. Gloomy Gus

    Spoiler

That's right, I didn't forget about Gus (20, 3, 0)! Admittedly, he hasn't been working out much lately. Wait, who's that dragon standing behind him? Might it be Gloomtail (120, 9, 3), stronger than ever before? Yep, and he hasn't forgiven you for beating his sister in the minor leagues. Beware his Megabreath attack!

    7. Head in the Clouds

    Spoiler

A cloud and a bird, working together? Believe it! Huff N. Puff (90, 7, 0) will threaten you with his breath and lightning attacks, while Buzzar (60, 5, 1) can pick up your partner and take them out of battle for a turn, before dropping them. Keep your eyes glued to the skies!

    6. All for Naut

    Spoiler

You may have thought he was reduced to a mere positronic brain, but fret not: Sir Grodus (100, 9, 2) lives yet. He's more threatening than ever before, with more power, and the ability to summon two Grodus Xs (3, 4, 0) per turn, each giving him +1 Defense. And with 4 of them, he becomes invulnerable. Perhaps attacking the hand that holds his staff would be a worthwhile endeavor?

    5. Mineral Monarch

    Spoiler

The Crystal King (140, 8, 3) is returning to reign on Mario's parade. His Icy Breath has the chance to freeze, and at low HP, he can create illusions like a Wizzerd. He can also summon Crystal Bits (1, 0, 0), that he can then use to attack.

    4. He's Taking His Tube Out!

    Spoiler

We all thought Lord Crump, the true treasure and icon, was lost in space. Turns out, he was! But then another X-Naut took his plans, and used them to refine his creation further. It's Magnus von Grapple 3.0 (110, 10, 3), and this time, it's quite ready to grapple. In addition to the rocket fists attack, it can fire up to seven audience members, for 5 damage apiece.

    3. Toad's Mojo Dojo Casa House

    Spoiler

Ah, the Toad Town Dojo. Before the Glitz Pit, the place where Mario truly became a master. But to be the master, you've got to beat the master. And that's just who he's got to face here! There's Chan (30, 3, 3), the braided Buzzy Beetle who does spinning attack. Then Lee (40, 7, 0) the Duplighost who can copy Mario's partner. And of course, they're led by The Master (99, 10, 1). Notorious for his slide kick and combo attacks, he's one of the fiercest combatants the Pit has ever seen.

    2. The Shadow Beauties

    Spoiler

Finally, the trio are back together again! Beldam has finally accepted her sister, so for this battle only, she won't be on Mario's side. There's Vivian (70, 6, 1), whose Fiery Jinx can burn Mario and his partner. She may be his friend, but she's giving it all she's got! Then Marilyn (80, 8, 1), the bruiser of the bunch, can charge up her clapping attack. Finally, Beldam (60, 7, 1) remains the brains of the operations, and can attack with ice magic - or help her sisters attack a second time.

    1. Stars Above!

    Spoiler

What would a Mario boss rush be without King Koopa? Bowser (99, 9, 3) is back, and with the Star Rod, no less! He can use it to make himself invulnerable for a turn, and double the power of his next attack, such as Fire Breath and Bite attacks. As for Kammy Koopa (99, 6, 1), she's back on the broom, and doing all she can. Making herself invisible, electric, healing herself or Lord Bowser... there's no limit to the tricks up this woman's sleeves!

    Bonus: Moorinyz

    Spoiler

Listen here, Slick! A certain Duplighost (40, 6, 0) is back - but you can easily defeat him by saying the name "Doopliss", right? Wrong! He's changed his name! Thus, he's impervious to all damage. But when he transforms into Mario, he'll reveal that his name starts with an "M". Turning into Goombella, he gives the second letter, "o". Have him transform into all the partners to get his full name: "Moorinyz"! Say that name, and suddenly, you he starts taking damage. From there, he's a piece of cake.

    Ch: Shadow of a Doubt

    Spoiler

Mario defeated the dark presence who lived beneath Rogueport... or did he? One way or another, the Shadow Queen (225, 8, 2) has made her return to the world of the living. She may not have Peach, but she has a dark wirey body that drains the hope of all who face it. Her Hand attacks, including the Dead Hands, are part of the fun as well. Will she succeed into plunging the surface world into another millenium of darkness? Or will Mario and his partners send her packing once more?

Again, each battle will provide Coins and Star Points. And even if the battles don't sound too tough, don't forget about the conditions that Jolene can set! As for the reward for beating the course as a whole, what should it be? One option would be another badge. I'm thinking the "Star Saver" badge. This would reduce the Star Power Cost of special attacks by 1 - except for those that cost just 1 SP already. So, Earth Tremor would cost just 1 SP, while Sweet Feast would cost 4 SP, for example. This badge would require 4 BP to equip.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this list? Any notable bosses that I've missed? Any alterations that you're not so sure about? Please let me know, in the comments below!

Wait, isn't he inadvertently responsible for Eirika's reunion with her brother? Orson traps her in the castle, shortly before Ephraim arrives via a different entrance point. Had the bridge not been blown out, she might've fled immediately, and the siblings would just miss each other.

Also, is four appearances really so few? That seems roughly on-par with what most of the "Sacred Stones of Grado" received. Two or three backstory appearances, then the one time you fight them. Two, in Riev's case. Selena disappears off the face of the earth for Eirika, while Glen does the same for Ephraim. Orson might actually be more important than some of them.

However, unlike Meg, who's more "stylized," so to speak, with her cartoonish mouth and eyes (though her design is still pretty neat don't get me wrong), Dorothy's just a regular girl.

Meg is honestly cute-as-a-button. I love her design, and what we get of her as a character, so flipping much.

Dorothy, too, I really like. Just have more normal-looking characters, please! In a world of anime waifus and hasubandos, that's what it takes to stand out.

  23. I've gotta give it to Lumineon. It's literally just a fish, three generations after that was deemed acceptable design. And yet, it has the audacity to take an "eon" name. Two, if we want to count "Finneon" as well. Those are now names that Eevee will never have the chance to evolve into. All for some fish that nobody ever uses.

    Godspeed, Lumineon.

Of course, Yewfelle boosts Faval's Atk immensely anyhow, although it has to be added that he isn't terribly accurate with it. I can definitely see that even without looking at his bad Str, Holyn, or really any dude with a better Skl stat than Azel, would make a better father for Faval specifically. Of course, he can swap to the Killer Bow for accuracy... but if he has to do that, this Azel!Faval really becomes just a shitty version of Lester, who hasn't exactly been the star of the show to begin with.

With my incredibly limited experience with this game, I still dare to question the First Mate's authority on eugenics a little. He lists Jamke as Bridget's most desirable hubby, but with Yewfelle being as inaccurate as it is, Holyn really makes a strong impression on me - especially because his Holy Blood also helps Patty quite a bit by giving her Brave Sword access before promotion. I wonder if Lex/Ayra + Holyn/Bridget might be overall a stronger pair of pairs than Holyn/Ayra and Jamke/Bridget...?

Admittedly, this is one I could see going either way. I do believe that Chulainn produces the best Patty. As for Faval, though - Chulainn provides him the best possible Skill and HP. Jamke, however, gives higher Strength and Luck. Additionally, while Chulainn provides our Archer with no skills, Jamke gives Adept and Accost. So even if he misses, he has a chance to hit again. Oh, and he's hitting harder. Finally, Jamke starts with an extra 100 love points. So Chulainn x Brigid takes an extra 20 turns of adjacency to get going.

In any case, there's a debate to be had on the best partner for Brigid. Much like Lex vs. Chulainn for Ayra, or Lewyn vs. Azelle for Tailtiu. I'm no more an authority than any other overenthusiastic player with too much time on their hands.

I do wonder what kind of story Travant tells his children about their mother (or "mother", in Altena's case). Altena's ability to wield Gáe Bolg is, in-universe, irrefutable proof that she has major Nova blood, so if Travant is holding up the story that she and Arion are both his biological children, that should mean that he had to make up a girlfriend in Canada wife from Leonster.

TBH I think you might have it backwards here. My assumption, when Travant refers to Altenna's "mother", is that he's referring to Ethlyn. He's not wrong about her being brash - riding horses and bringing her daughter into the desert with her. No idea who Arion's mother is. Presumably she died offscreen, probably a long time ago. Hell, maybe before Altenna was kidnapped. "Honey, where did this baby with a giant lance come from?"

I do like Lewyn's speech there - although I'll say that the game didn't do the greatest job of showing a "brand of nobility and justice" of Travant. A classic FE game treating the enemy king of a Wyvern-riding country more sympathetically than he deserves? I'm shocked, I say, shocked!

You'd have to be very careful about not even let Altena know about the general concept of Holy Weapons. The game has consistently shown their wielders to sense their overwhelming power, and Patty even had a "woah" reaction when she saw Shanan pick up Balmung. So Altena can't even learn that Arion is wielding Gungnir and can do so because he's the heir to Dain's bloodline, or she might wonder why she (and only she) can use a lance of similar power.

Well, the Miracle Sword only works for women. Travant could invent some tripe about both the Gungnir and Gae Bolg being associated with Dainn holy blood - but only men can wield the former, while only women use the latter.

I really like the idea of Celica as an Echo for Robin. And for the sword attacks, instead of the Levin sword maybe she could use her own Beloved Zofia sword that has set damage, rather than the rotating Bronze-to-Levin damage Robin has.

Beloved Zofia? Ah, you must be thinking of Saber's Golden Dagger. Celica is far too honorable to demand he return the sword that she had given him as payment, after all.

But, perhaps she could use the Ladyblade? It can do magical damage, and tends to outdamage the Beloved Zofia regardless. Even if it's not technically a Celica exclusive.

Depends on what the goal is. If the goal is to make him "Not swordsman" then he should get an axe for all of his attacks (this also helps to mitigate the "Where's his sword beam" issue that he has going on with Ragnell) aside from the final smash. If the goal is to make the most representative and rounded Ike possible, then I'd be fine with him just getting Urvan for his Smash attacks and using Ragnell for everything else. As for Ettard (and the Royal Sword, everyone forgets the Royal Sword. Oh wait that's Alm's sword. The uh, Regal Sword? Or is that Lloyd's sword? Regal Blade? Royal Blade? Uh well his PoR rapier), for that I'd most like to see in the form of *COSTUME CUSTOMIZATION* Let me swap in and out individual parts of the unit model for others to deck out my character in the fashion I most want. Ettard, Ragnell, Not!Rapier, have them all as costume options. Let me give young Link the Mirror Shield and Gilded Sword too! Obviously this is not a feature that would equally impact the whole cast, some would have more options than others, but I'd love something like that even in limited scope.

I get what you're saying, but "rude blue-haired dude who mostly uses Axes" isn't Ike - it's Hector. Obviously they share a lot of traits, but I worry it'd be "salt in the wound" to those fans who really wanted an Ostian noble in the mix.

I might be biased - having played RD first - but I have basically no affection for the "Rapier by another name". Not only does it kinda suck, in a game with 2x effective damage, but it makes no sense. Why is Ike, our first (debatably) Commoner Lord, using a "regal" sword? Maybe it'd make sense as a gift from Elincia, but it was from Greil, so ???.

As for the Ettard, it actually feels like it allows Ike to be his own character. Rather than walking in the footsteps of previous Lords, with their pseudo-Rapiers, he decides to bring a chonky blade into battle. That weight might slow a lesser fighter down, but not the beefed-up, growth-spurted Ike. It doesn't do effective damage, but that's how badass Ike is: he doesn't need effective damage to one-round his enemies. Just a good, solid, natural extension of his arm. The kind of weapon that his father might've used, when he wasn't in a life-or-death scenario, at least.

Costume customization would be very cool, of course. Imagine, Peach getting multiple designs (and movesets) based on her Showtime! appearance. ...Oh, without changing the mechanical properties? That'd be easier to program, and therefore more likely.
