  1. I can definitely say this. Design aside, the videos they're releasing aren't giving me high hopes for Alear's personality. I mean, their dialogue in that video talking to Etie can be basically be summarized:

"I was staring at you because you're so positive and it makes me feel good."

Obviously I paraphrased that but that was the general case. My reaction was basically "Wow" to how bad that dialogue was.

I'm conflicted about Etie's design. I like the clothing and hair and how they work together, but the overall moe thing is really throwing me off here. Hopefully it'll grow on me!

The moe thing is a big part of why I'm bugged by the design of the females in general in this game so far. especially with how the faces are being drawn.

Chloe in particular, whose face looks way younger than the rest of her body would indicate.

(It'd be nice if everyone in Engage was romanceable regardless of gender so everyone can pair themselves with their favorites, but also to prevent awkward stuff like this.)

To be completely honest, I would hate something like this.

It's probably just a me thing, but I want characters to be characters first and fanservice second. To me, making all characters bi just for the sake of allowing the Avatar to romance either of them regardless of gender feels like pandering to me.

Like, I'm perfectly okay with it for characters like Dorothea. Her bisexuality is a natural part of her character, not something that's there purely for player amusement. I fully support that, and I support any Engage characters to be naturally bi as well. But going bi for all of them is a big no no for me. I don't care for the "it's a video game, who cares" excuse that I commonly see on the internet. I want characters to be characters first, not something subject to the whims of the player.

That's actually what bugs me about Fire Emblem Heroes and Genshin Impact so much. Because dialogue isn't adjusted for gender, any character who shows an interest in the Summoner or the Traveler is essentially bi by default, and it doesn't feel natural.

    Well, baby steps, right?

Anyway, I'm really curious what those gender differences are going to be. While it'd be unfair for them to be too drastic (like a 100% kit overhaul or different plot) it'd be nice to have something concrete to set them apart if they really want to do something with the two versions of them. I'd love a Kotone/ Makoto split as well, but as you said before, that's probably going to be too much and the two versions already seem identical in personality so far~

I'm all for things being molded around what gender protagonist you have, such as with P3P.

It bugs me in games like Fire Emblem Heroes and Genshin Impact where nothing changes regardless of what gender you pick. Makes things feel weird to me.

Oh, you know Japanese? It's great that the first person to respond to that is someone who can help us make sense of stuff! 😄

But wow, I thought that was just an aesthetic thing.

That could be an interesting twist. It'd be the avatar children from Awakening and Fates again, but with parents instead of children. This theory may not hold water if the woman on the top right of the poster is meant to be the dragon though. The latter suggestion could be a riff on the implied canon of M!Corrin = Hoshido/ F!Corrin = Nohr thing too. I know Kienquocsi translated it, but I still feel skeptical that gender will play that big a role in the story. If it does though, that would be a really abstract way to implement a route split!

I love the entirety of this post but I'll just quote this part. While Engage definitely looks like it'll be relatively "by-the-numbers", I don't think that matters if the story is really strong as a result. ATLA is a great example, but PoR is one from within the franchise: everyone loves that game's story even though it's arguably one of the simplest in the entire series (protect the runaway princess until she gets her kingdom back). Simplicity isn't a problem, but boring is. If Engage can be "engaging" (pun unintended) I think it'll be a great entry even if it plays those tropes straight (though yes, I would love if we're getting another deconstruction plot). Thank you so much for writing all of that!

According to the leaks, Engage was delayed by over a year due to Covid and Nintendo's interference (probably because their schedule was too packed), so it probably would have come out in 2021 - a few months late but still close enough to the 30th anniversary.

No one said 3H was perfect, and as awkward as the reused maps in Act 2 were, you can't deny that IS were ambitious in trying to tell a story from three (four if you count SS) different perspectives.

To add my take on simple stories, yes simple ones can be good. Heck, Sacred Stones and Path of Radiance are both very simple and I think they're 2 of the best stories in the franchise.

The reason for my own pessimism is a lack of confidence in Intelligent Systems writers these days. I have not been impressed with them, as I consider Awakening to be a poorly paced, underdeveloped mess of a story and the less said about Fates story the better.

I can't even praise them for Three Houses despite how much I loved it's story because most of it was written by Koei Tecmo.

So, that's my stance on it. Simple is all well and good but it doesn't automatically excuse everything. Echoes story was okayish so hopefully they learned a little from that.

Thank you very much, super fan!

I haven't heard much of Laura Stahl before, but it's always great to see fresh faces (or hear new voices as the case may be) in bigger roles in long running series like this so I'm all for it! Thank you very much, I hope we get more English clips so we can hear more of the new cast soon too! Even English versions of previous clips will be relevant information because of that.

If you want to hear more of her, she's Tanya in Fire Emblem Heroes as well as Barbara and Xinyan in Genshin Impact.

Glad to get more English dialogue! I think it may be worth adding English equivalents to Japanese tweets we've gotten to the main post, maybe (so basically just the Marth and Celica ones so far)?

Also, does F!Alear sound familiar to anyone? She reminds me a little of Erica Mendez (Bernadetta, Katheryne and Ayaka in Genshin Impact) but I don't think it's her...

It feels like they're at the beginning of their news cycle. Hopefully they give us new content, but I wouldn't be surprised if most (if not all) of the stuff they reveal comes weeks after FireEmblemJP shows off the same thing. The English dialogue and text is always going to be useful though.

But the slow news could be a blessing in disguise, since Nintendo has a tendency to spoil everything about a few of their games right before release. Though I don't recall any recent examples, so it's probably fine.

Definitely not Erica Mendez. As a huge Bernadetta and Ayaka fan, I'd recognize her voice in a heartbeat if it was.

Popular guess I'm seeing around reddit and other places is Laura Stahl.

Thanks! It's great to hear the English VA again! That doesn't sound like Johnny Yong Bosch as Alear anymore for me though, what about for everyone else?

    I honestly don't have a clue.

Looking around, the most popular guess I'm seeing from others is Erik Kimerer.

In any case, I am glad we are getting some English versions of the Twitter footage. I hope that continues and they show the other characters, or at least a few of them.

I don't get why this tweet was necessary, since their last tweet already did the same thing (promote Marth) and gave us some info on him (his title). They're really making a poor case for you even bothering to change the title of this thread, to be honest.

We've even seen Roy in the corner of some shots in the reveal trailer so he probably joins early on in the story. If NoA really wanted to give us something new they could have given us him and contributed something JPN Twitter hadn't. Of course not everyone checks the latter, but that doesn't excuse all the "nothing" tweets either.

But in any case, we're getting a new character reveal tomorrow (or later today based on your time zone) so it's not a big deal. I know I've said it before, but I really hope we get some concrete info on how the mechanics work soon...

And that's probably it. They're likely intentionally not showing anything that wasn't in the trailer.

I'd settle just for them at least showing some English versions of the character intros we've been getting.

As for the topic name, I think changing it from "Japanese twitter posts" to just "Twitter posts" is a good idea, as correct me if I'm wrong, but the screen for the gender choice is completely new, so we may see things that weren't gleamed from the Japanese tweets, or were completely absent.

Yeah, both screenshots that NoA has shown off are brand new, even if the information associated isn't.

  11. As for my opinion on art takes, I'd say debate is fine so long as no one pulls the objective card.

Personally, I hate Engages art style and have found very little from Mika Pikazo that I like in general, but that is merely own subjective opinion and represents no views but my own.

As for the section here, renaming it to Twitter information sounds good, and we can leave updating the first post to if NoA shows anything major.

...I mean...sure, she doesn't have Byleth's leggings or belly-opening or Corrin's thigh-gap, but like I would say she is fairly equal in terms of fanservice of female avatars...

I do miss full customization of the avatars. It was always strange to me that the move to 3D has us losing options instead of gaining them...

I can at least handle what looks like a regular skirt, compared to the awkward cut of Female Corrin's armor that feels out of place.

And after dealing with how absurdly massive they made Female Byleth's chest, at least somewhere less than that is alright.

  13. I understand that these are basically just meant to be previews but....wow the dialogue between Alear and the Emblems is super generic. Like wow, probably the most basic stuff they could have come up with.

I'm really hoping they don't heavy hand the whole "peace and love" thing as much as they did with Corrin. That was one of my biggest complains about him.
