  1. I'm a huge fan of the Tellius character designs and nothing since has really done it for me nearly as well. I'm not going to hate on Kozaki too much (although I will hate on whoever was responsible for armour in Awakening), and I am kinda warming to him with time. I think I like what I've seen better than Awakening overall, so far, but with only ~10 of the characters having remotely decent artwork so far it's too early to say for sure.

-I was never a fan of Robin's strange coat, so Kamui's armour is a step up for me, thigh holes or not. Kinda hope the barefoot thing will be explained but if it isn't, whatever.

-Marx probably has my favourite Kozaki design to date. I love his hair, his facial expressions, and the black-and-gold armour. Just badass. I have nothing bad to say here.

-Camilla I'm less down on than some people, aside from being I'm all aboard the hate for the panty window or whatever it is. I like her hair, headpiece, and overall look.

-Leon... armour! On a mage! I love it. He actually looks like a mage in an army instead of some wandering scholar who found his way onto a plucky band of heroes. Rest of his design's cool too.

-Elise is the real sore spot of Norh to me, and the cast as well. She's ludicrously short (sometimes I think character designers don't get the memo that women are mostly done growing in height by age 12-13, and I'll be surprised if Elise is much older), the hair is just far too goofy, and I do not like the dress.

-I love Ryouma's armour, both the colour scheme and the little touches we see on it. I do not like his hair, it's too "anime" for me.

-Hinoka is the bland skinny girl we've seen hundreds of times before, version Short Hair. Meh. Armour's pretty cool I suppose?

-I like Takumi. He's interesting. He looks very different design-wise from his siblings, both the colour scheme and the outfit. It's not an overall favourite but it draws my attention in a good way.

-Sakura's outfit invokes a religious figure which is neat for a healer. I like what she has going on with the sleeves, and her hair. She's literally the first design I've liked in this recent chain of little sister healers the series has had since Path of Radiance.

-I wasn't too fond of the initial shots of Aqua we got, felt a bit too "mysterious waif" for lack of a better term. But a lot of that is facial expressions, I think? The overall design is fine, and I like her a lot better in her more recent design with a more determined look.

  2. The way the Famitsu scan ordered the siblings so clearly makes me assume that the age goes elder brother > elder sister > younger brother > younger sister, although it's true that we don't have any direct confirmation about the males compared to the females (although Elise is pretty obviously the youngest Nohrian and Ryouma is pretty obviously the oldest Hoshidan, IMO). And yeah, Kamui's age compared to that of Takumi/Leon seems ambiguous... I'd guess they're similar? Although if Kamui is indeed the biological sibling of Takumi, one or the other will have to be clearly older (assuming they aren't twins, which seems safe).

  3. The problem is that most people don't play games for the "cinematic experience", they play games to play games. Even on Hard Mode you don't actually need to do anything in 3-E because Skrimir and Tibarn's forces will get you to 80 kills eventually, and the only reason you have to do anything in 3-P is because Skrimir's forces won't attack the boss.

People play games for many reasons, and in the case of a (strategy) RPG like Fire Emblem that's going to include story (and story presentation) for a lot of people. I'll take a few maps like these over an endless array of "and then Marth's forces stomped another forgettable enemy army into dirt", myself.

And, honestly, the worst map in FE10 for "you don't have to do anything" is 3-7 (the river crossing map as Ike), since there isn't even a cinematic excuse there. You can literally hit end turn and kill a few stragglers and win, and the battle serves minimal story purpose. You don't have to do much in 3-P, no, but it is short and there is a BExp reward for doing more. 3-E I've already conceded isn't much fun after the first playthrough, but I don't think you should poo-poo the effect it has for a first-time player. If it didn't work for you, I'm sorry, but at least you should be able to see and respect what they were going for.

  4. FE9 is slow because map animations are slow as fuck and you can't turbo through them like you can FE1-5 emulators (which is how most people play those games)

FE10 is slow because a bunch of maps in Part 2/3 have a horde of allied NPCs that waste your time for no real reason. So you sit there waiting for them and the enemy to ineffectively trade blows (3-P and 3-E are particularly egregious about this) and it's just why would you do this, IS?

I actually quite like 3-P; it's relatively short and gets its cinematic intend across really well. I liked the feel of you being a small strike force helping the actual lord of the map (Skrimir) accomplish the victory condition. 3-E is also cinematic, but I do agree it drags on too long. You don't feel like you're helping do anything, you're just watching a clock move steadily forward until a key event can happen. I enjoyed it well enough the first time because of the feel of dread (I liked the comments of various characters interspersed throughout the fight at various kill thresholds) and wondering what was going to happen, but it certainly drags on replays.

  5. Hm, I definitely disagree with the assessment that -Hit doesn't matter (the +Hit, I'll grant, is often overkill). Once you're 15 down on hit, accuracy becomes much more problematic. You still hit more often than not, sure, but it's much dicier to form strategies which rely on landing 75%-accurate shots. The most accurate weapons can afford this hit somewhat better, but those also tend to be among the lowest-might ones, which often aren't good enough in situations where you're fighting WTD.

The effects of -Hit to the enemy are often phenomenal. Since enemy hit rates often hover around the middle values, +15 avoid often translates to a >25% swing in real accuracy. It certainly doesn't just matter earlygame. A +30 avoid gap (the difference from WTD to WTA) is frequently the difference between near invincibility and an extremely feared enemy type. Compare the performance of PC myrmidons against enemy fighters (laughable) and enemy lance-users (very dangerous).

I do agree that mages this is less important, in part because every enemy magic user type is far rarer than any given physical weapon type. But when mages decide to show up in significant numbers, which admittedly isn't often, it does matter. I feel infinitely more comfortable with light magic than with anima on Pirate Ship, for instance. I'm too lazy to look up the numbers for a side discussion but I really expect they'll back me up here.

  6. For the record, I was thinking of various RPG examples like Lulu in FFX, Myuria in Star Ocean 4, Jessica in Dragon Quest 8, etc. Although I agree that the player expectations may be different with FE14, because it's the sequel to a game where the main player character could pair up with anyone, which is not necessarily the norm in the other series I mentioned.

On reflection I'm not too bothered by people wanting their incestous supports; it's a bit squick to me but there are far worse things to be concerned about. And I'm not going to deny that Marx and Camilla are the probably the most attractive members of their respective genders shown so far. It'll be interesting to see if they actually do it, though.

  7. +/-15 hit is a pretty big deal in most cases, so the triangle is quite significant. Mage-to-mage combat is indeed somewhat rare in most games, but when it does happen the triangle can certainly matter. e.g. Lucius is much better than Erk at fending off a swarm of shamans on the FE7 pirate ship map, while Canas is considerably better at actually attacking enemy anima mages than Lucius is.

I'm not particularly attached to the magic triangle per se (and the Tellius fire/lightning/wind one always felt pretty meh, in part because most mages got all three elements anyway and also because those games inexplicably weakened the effects of the weapon triangle) but I am all for them doing something involving advantage/disadvantage with it.

  8. How likely do you think this will actually be the case?

BEcuase it seems the majority of players who picked up FEA enjoyed the S rank marriage/romance thing

Well I expect there will still be S rank with plenty of other characters. The siblings make up just 8 PCs and I'll be surprised if Nohr+Hoshido routes combined have less than 40. That's no shortage of other options.

Maybe I'm wrong and they'll put in a bunch of incestuous supports but I do hope not, and kinda expect not, because I think that would give the game some weird press.

I have a hard time believing they intend to tease their male fanbase and then proceed to troll them.

If they do, I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath.

EDIT: Especially since she seems to be the 'extremely devoted to nii-san' trope.

I dunno. Offhand I actually think it's a pretty common trope for the "older", fanservicy female character to not be romantically linked with the main, I want to say?

  9. The game has been so obsessed with symmetry so far that I expect them to be the same age, although FE often plays its ages close to the vest so it's entirely possible we'll never find out (though, given their pasts, it's more likely we learn their ages than most, I suppose).

Also to return to the original topic, I really hope that there are no romantic supports (if that's what S-rank means in this context) between Kamui and any of his or her eight siblings, adopted or not.

  10. I wouldn't be stunned if her affection for her Kamui extends to all her siblings. And if it doesn't, I would argue the most logical conclusion is that she just clicks with Kamui better for whatever reason (maybe Leon is too aloof and the other two siblings are too far away in age?), not that she harbours sexual feelings for her adopted brother/sister or whatever people seem to enjoy implying.

  11. Lore-wise they're neat. I didn't think I would enjoy the transforming animals; I thought they would be too gimmicky. But they were integrated into the world well and I ended up liking their execution quite a bit.

Gameplaywise they're blah in Path of Radiance, to be sure. They're pretty much just promoted units with range 1 only who can't fight half the time. The ones who join earlier have some use, certainly, but not in a way I find that interesting. Also they have that annoying bug where if you leave a Demi Band on one to end the fight, it will have 0 gauge to start the next fight.

I liked them in Radiant Dawn pretty well, on the other hand. Most of them had generally superior stats to beorc units (the ones that don't are admittedly pretty wretched), but they played differently and there were a lot of tradeoffs. Range 1 only, a gauge to watch and consider (really made you want to avoid them taking chippy ranged attacks despite the fact those would rarely hurt them), a major decision on each player phase as to whether to attack or use Olivi Grass... it was neat. My biggest issue is the gauge starting at 0, which meant they could never be relevant turn 1 (outside stone/gem + heron). Also, they played with Exp/Bonus Exp/stat boosters/Strike level in totally different ways from beorc. And the flying laguz uniquely brought Shove+Canto to the table, and there's a lot you could do with that. Felt like there was a lot of interesting choices to be made surrounding them.

For non-royals I use Volug, Ranulf, Janaff, and Ulki most playthroughs, and others depending on my mood.

  12. I always imagined Micaiah to be about 23 and Sothe to be about 16, so... I dunno. It's a gap, to be sure, but nothing that doesn't happen in real life.

Honestly even within Radiant Dawn alone this isn't even the largest age gap in a pairing; Jill can't be much older than Sothe (a couple years at most?) and Haar is substantially older than Micaiah even by the higher estimates of Micaiah's age seen in this thread.

  13. Eh between 3 campaigns, 9 slots isn't a whole lot in my opinion.

Yeah, it certainly could be more. I'd honestly like to see them just go the route of letting you save files on the SD card so you could make as many as you want, but 9 is still a good step, especially compared to Awakening's three (plus two map saves if you want to be awkward).

  14. I think Kamui should stay the same to reflect his not!Japanese origin. Giving him a western name would defeat the purpose of his character. Kamui is a real name, Reflet isn't and sounds awkward as a name so it's appropriate that it was changed.

Is Kamui a real name? I've never heard it used as a name before, and Googling just turned up various fictional characters/spirits. I know roughly what the word translates as from Japanese, and can certainly see how that might be an appropriate name for the character... but that meaning will be lost on most non-Japanese speakers. So yeah, I'm betting it gets changed.

  15. I can't say I have much interest in playing the mode myself, but I see no harm in it existing. In any game which a player can reasonably play for story, it's reasonable to have a mode which is so easy it all but beats itself. While obviously Normal Casual (as in FE12-13) is too easy for me personally to enjoy, there's nevertheless an argument that it isn't easy enough for its target audience, so this works.

  16. Yeah, I'm irrationally happy about this. Not only do I typically share an FE cartridge (/GC memory card/Wii hard drive) with my significant other, but often have loaned it out to friends as well, not to mention I have played most of the games half a dozen times or more, and I love keeping save files as records of my previous parties. Anything that increases the number is great as far as I'm concerned.

  17. I suspect Kamui is high on the list of names to be changed. Even if many of the other Hoshido characters keep their Japanese names (and I hope they do), it seems a poor fit for a character raised in Nohr, and the meaning of the name will be lost on an English-speaking audience. Plus it sounds weird, like Reflet did. Wouldn't be surprised if the localisation digs up another gender-neutral name in the tradition of Robin and Morgan.

Kinda expect Marx will change too. And would never be shocked by others.

  18. Huge caveat that the overseas releases may not be handled this way at all, and in fact there's good reason to believe it won't because (as this thread already shows!) North American fans are much more prickly about this type of thing on average.

That said, if you're the type of person for whom making the choice at chapter 6 instead of when you buy the game is a really big deal, why not just buy the digital version? From the sounds of things the choice will be an in-game one, then.

  19. I assumed that "marriage" referred to characters getting married in endings as well, myself, hence the third poll. It's certainly not in every game of the series: it's in Genealogy, the GBA games, and Awakening. (I'm not very familiar with FE2 or FE5, so forgive me if I missed one of them). In the Tellius games, you couldn't pair up anyone in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn wasn't much different, with like half a dozen paired endings and nobody having more than one potential marriage partner, IIRC. And I don't remember anything of that sort in the DS games (and by proxy, FE1/3), though my memory of their writing is poor so again correct me if I'm wrong.

  20. I definitely like the limited sets of reclassing more than FE12's system (especially once the male class sets got combined), it added a fair bit of character individuality. I'm for individual stat cap modifiers too even if I never found them remotely relevant due to capped stats being way too high for Awakening's maingame.

  21. If they do do it again (which I'm sure they will for Hoshido), I want the reasons for getting married to be a little more down to earth, and less "you threw a beehive at me and it made me fall in love with you".

Some of the ones in Awakening were just flat out ridiculous, even as standard supports.

I think this is inevitable when you let (almost) every male character marry (almost) every female character... which is pretty ridiculous and I certainly hope they avoid that in the future. Even if you must make an exception for the avatar for fanservice reasons, no reason to do that for others.

I'm fine with marriage coming back though I'd prefer the caveat I just mentioned, and hopefully not too much in the middle of the game. It'd be pretty nice if the game reflected the range of human relationships (platonic and non-platonic) possible in the supports but I won't hold my breath.

  22. I have to agree with Mayus, here; the series has said it (in Elibe, which need not generalise to other settings), but it hasn't explained it. As such I really see no reason to be attached to it.

we can't be satisfied with this alone, we need our social justice warrior axe class that people will just reclass into a flier anyways because fliers are so fucking good and most of the time, the flier class are dominated by females, who i consider better then males in these games bar none.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the one FE I'd argue definitely has higher average male unit worth than female unit worth (Radiant Dawn) features several great male fliers.

  23. I would definitely like to see FE7-style side chapters return. Secondary objectives are good fun. The requirements can be either secret or spelled out; I don't really care (either way has its advantages). Though if they're secret, preferably not tooo secret. 19xx bad, most everything else good.

I only disagree with hiding a whole ending (complete with maps) behind getting all of them, I really didn't like that about FE6 or FE12. While I was never personally burned by it in FE6, I've seen it happen to friends and it kinda kills the game, to not get the real ending because you missed some random requirement. The story just isn't complete if it ends at Chapter 22. You can say "but you can just replay it!" but not everyone is going to be a big enough fan of a 40-hour game to want to play through it a second time to see the story's ending.

  24. And it's not like Fire Emblem hasn't made women who may not look like they lift, but are strong as fuck, either. Look at Cherche with her taming dragons at 9 and +3 str modifier on par with Vaike. Of course, I'd prefer if they did make some who looks like they lift because having 90% of the female cast with the same build is really fucking boring design-wise, especially compared to the male cast, who gets a decent range. I'm kinda sick of designers sticking to the same paradigm over and over again.

    This. So, so this.

I really like FE's character design overall (it's one of the great things about the series IMO; I love how I can look at giant crossover group fanart from the series and immediately pick out who the characters are) but this is definitely my biggest gripe with it.

  25. I don't think I've ever heard of a game getting an M rating for skimpy outfits/fanservice (without nudity). And there are many games out there with far more risque outfits than Camilla's. The entire Soul Calibur series is rated T, for instance, as is SRT Endless Frontier.

It's possible the game will get rated M for other reasons, but I really doubt it. As has already been pointed out, the game's rating in Japan isn't proof of anything; such games get localised as either T or M readilly. Based on what we've seen so far, there's really nothing that puts the game beyond the standard RPG rating of T; it generally takes a lot of blood, extreme graphic violence, or outright nudity to push a game's rating further. Even the pincushioning seen in the trailer is relatively ungraphic for what it is, and wouldn't seem out of place in a T-rated game (compare the famous relevant scene in FF7).
