To me it really feels like #2 and 4 are wearing religious garbs, not coats like Claude's. I think him and Hilda are the only actual archers of the bunch, as we know them anyway.

Same for Mercedes. Her using a sword really isn't enough for me to believe she's a myrmidon. If anything, she's only evasive enough with an iron sword to lower Ed's accuracy by 4, and that just seems too low.

Good point about the second gen still though, there is a bit of redundance already if we're eventually recruiting all of these people.

Either way, the abundance of bow classes in the earlygame is interesting to see. Unless they reshuffled things, of course (like Saizo being shown on Hoshido Chapter 7 despite actually being recruited later, for instance).

The bit about evasion could be the result of several things; low stats and a re-tooled evasion formula could be to blame. The generic design they used for her in the trailer looks rather lightly armored, so I'm personally assuming myrm (but also leaving options open).

  2. Been re-watching the trailer some for the sake of analysis now that it's been a couple months. Apologies in advance for not spoiler tagging images; I tried but having more than a couple in a post with the newer site causes the formatting to be completely borked.

    Here's Claude: threehouses-battle3.jpg

    Blue-haired ally archer: https://serenesforest.net/wp-content/gallery/three-houses-e3-screens/NintendoSwitch_FireEmblemThreeHouses_scrn01_E3.jpg

From what I can tell, females just have capes instead (and of course thigh-highs): https://s33.postimg.cc/m545kcxhr/Images_and_Videos_-_Serenes_Forest_-_Comodo_Dragon_9_5_2018_8_17.png

Also, assuming the fights we see are only mock battles and every character is recruitable, that's four Archers already:
    >Claude
    >Blue-haired ally guy
    >Hilda
    >Blondie behind her (https://serenesforest.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/threehouses-foes.jpg)

I think it's safe to say there won't be any 2nd gen, since that would necessitate only a couple characters of each class in 1st gen. Though they could work around it by cutting down on available classes which I also think is a very real possibility (4 archers right off the batt?).

To finish off my rambling, Mercedes looks to be the first female myrmidon (unless she's a mercenary, then...) in nearly a decade without a Japanese-influenced design (Say'ri and Hana).

Actually, one more thing: Edelgard is confirmed to have her own unique class (Aristocrat), and Dimitri is implied to have his own class (his design doesn't mesh up with the generic infantry lancers shown, plus he has a sword at his hip-- though that could be for decoration). Claude is the odd one out, as he has a coat that is shared with generic male Archers, implying he'll just be that.

What's the point of an AT that simply distributes food when there's one that does that and also attacks the enemy?

Isabelle is a heal over time, periodically giving out food to the player that summoned her-- the other one is a clone of Kirby's old final smash and leaves food for anyone to pick up at the end of it. The only thing they have in common is that they loosely involve food. It's as arbitrary a "replacement" as you can get-- hell, this downright reads like gamefaqs trolling.

People had been anticipating Simon since Snake's debut in Brawl.

Yet virtually nobody realistically expected him at all after Konami went to shit and Nintendo didn't even bother asking for Snake back during Smash 4's development. Here Verg comes out saying Snake will return and Simon Belmont will come with him, months before E3 and we find out that Everyone's Here and even further before the Direct that confirmed Simon Belmont.

Nothing smug about making the obvious connections here, some of us can reach these conclusions on our own and did so long before random internet kids thought they'd make a name for themselves. Don't bother responding to me if you're just going to defend those idiots because I'm not interested.

    >"Nothing smug"
    >Proceeds to act extremely smug

You're basically going "nothing ever leaks" then plugging your ears and rationalizing away everything to fit your narrative because it's somehow impossible to comprehend or something.

But jeuxvideo.com leaking Stage Morph on July 12, 2018 before it was revealed on August 8, 2018 is hardly a safe bet to make. That's not exactly the kind of new element Smash fans would predict would be in a new Smash game.

The topic itself was either deleted by mods or fabricated outright after the "fact", and it's number was far closer to recent topics than ones dated that far back-- at least that's what I've seen.

I'm reminded of a 2chan one that seemingly called every single revealed character so far + some dated in January... but it turns out the archive site it was in was made the day before and the thread didn't exist at all.

It's easy to make guesses over stuff like Simon, Chrom, Dark Samus, and K. Rool

Nobody expected Simon before Vergeben. Nintendo outright passed up asking for Snake back in Smash 4 and virtually nobody thought Konami would care for/be cooperative with things (with the only semi-talked about character being Bomberman). And keep in mind, this was pre-E3 when Verg started talking.

And no Echo fighters have been leaked at all at this point-- everybody just guessed Chrom and Dark Samus. I think it's telling that they're significantly lower priority with far fewer people being involved/knowing about them. After all, they don't generate nearly as much hype as unique newcomers.

    K. Rool was contested-- many thought Ridley was in purely because of the memes + Metroid's resurgence, while K. Rool hasn't had any notable appearances in a decade. The Smash Ballot being used for newcomers (with the only explicit selection from it so far being K. Rool) wasn't widespread knowledge, only being mentioned on the Japanese site.

Isabelle's been a reasonably safe bet as well, especially since she not only hasn't been shown as an AT, but effectively her AT role is more or less replaced by Chef Kawasaki.

Assist Trophy that heals the fighter who summoned it = clone of Kirby's old (offensively based) final smash that sucks opposing players into it?

    900.gif

Tl;DR It's easy to act smug and call characters safe after their heavily rumored/revealed.

To address the topic at hand, I believe both Vergeben and loz18 definitely should be paid attention to, but they also aren't infallible. They haven't gotten anything wrong yet, but loz's done some flip-flopping recently and Verg's stuff is just a crapshoot in general.

What I said in the first place is that nothing in smash represents a pre OoT Zelda. Now Zelda's redesign does. With my joke of a hashtag (which is not a substitute for an argument, it's a joke meant to encourage some research on something I find interesting)I was trying to point out there was more to it than our false translation suggested. Now you say I'm not only incorrect, but petty? Imagine a pot doing so much research before calling the kettle black.

But it's hardly a false translation; looking at the context, the Japanese itself leaves things perfectly open-- and considering that it merges both (incredibly similar) designs, it was probably meant that way.

There; I just repeated what I said in my first post, which I can't help but notice you didn't address at all.

In addition, the video you linked cites a "comparison" image that is incredibly biased and ignores the features it carries over, with the user who put it together being a complete ass towards anybody who points things out and outright calling them delusional (in the very comments section of the video, even). It's cherrypicked nonsense that "sensationalized" a complete non-issue.

The "joke of a hashtag" is definitely what got me to call it as petty, but really the entire insistence is; with the slightest bit of context, it all falls apart. Even the absurdity of complaining over 3 Houses title change at least has something to it because at least it was an actual change.

EDIT: To not make this a complete topic derail, the only series I'd really alter are FE and Pokemon.

Pokemon: remove all Gen 1 Pokemon but Pikachu and Charizard
    Add: Blaziken, Zoroark, Decidueye
For a total of: Pikachu, Charizard, Pichu, Blaziken, Lucario, Zoroark, Greninja, Decidueye

Fire Emblem: remove Chrom and Roy
Add: Ephraim (axes really aren't fundamentally different from swords animation-wise; they're both swung weapons with bladed ends), partially declone Lucina with some bow moves
For a total of: Marth, Ephraim, Ike, Robin, Corrin, unique Lucina

  6. Considering both Brawl and 4 had their entire rosters leaked months before launch, it's only realistic to expect that the same will happen again.

I do wonder if DLC might instead have some AT promotions, like Waluigi and Shovel Knight (who, even with how much he's appeared in everything, a vocal group would probably find more preferable than the far more popular alternatives of Steve or Sans-- though I'm personally quite neutral on the matter); it would be out of left field and generate hype, which would make perfect sense for DLC.

The designs are virtually identical with Smash taking elements from both. Also worth noting is that A Link to the Past is "Triforce of the Gods" in Japan while A Link Between Worlds is "Triforce of the Gods 2"; the Japanese could've just as easily been referring to the subseries, and again the designs were merged together and incredibly similar in the first place-- so trying to "correct" someone saying it's from ALBW is rather petty.
https://kantopia.wordpress.com/2018/06/23/smash-bros-ultimate-which-zelda-is-that-alttp-albw/ (which specifically calls out SG's translation as lacking in context)

Just played Valkyria Chronicles 1 and beat it after a friend recommended the game for me. Had a very good time in spite of some serious story gripes and some bullshit maps (and massive slowdowns on my potato laptop but that's not the game's fault). Really looking forward to the fourth game on the Switch now.

I am a bit worried about the premise though. Not only does the cast seem a smidge too...artificial? Forced? Anyway, I also can't say I like the idea of the plot. "We're going to rush the enemy capital that's 1500 kilometers away even though we were just 'steamrolled'". I'm not sure I understand how that's feasible even with Welky-boy causing havoc in Gallia. I mean, pushing back all fronts simultaneously? As in, all of them? How incompetent is the Empire? What happened to the steamrolling?

I do expect to be thoroughly entertained by the gameplay though.

4's is basically plagiarizing Operation Barbarossa from WWII, with the added bit of moronic nonsense like that which is basically just a series trademark (having played 2 and 3 both the stories had major issues with both pacing and overall making logical sense at points, on top of only a single decently developed protagonist between the 6 purported protagonists out of both games-- that is, 3 in each).

  9. Agnes/Chorus Kids/Isaac/Ken
    Isabelle/Shadow/Skull Kid

As of 10 hours later nobody has been able to find the renders-- even when they've been "found" there's always notable differences.

Could be real, but considering the Springman and Decidueye thing a while back there's also precedence for someone with a lot of skill in 3D modelling and time on their hands to make something like this.

Also I love all the posts going "welp Ken's model looks awful so it's probably real"

Since we're talking of Xenoblade, I can think of a spoiler regarding Elma that'd they could ruin for sure. A tempting one in some ways. And it isn't like they haven't ruined Xenoblade spoilers before, Fiora anyone?

I mean, I can think of an easy way to graft major spoilers into Rex's moveset: since the Catalyst Scimitar is also a sword, they'd really only need to limit the range of the beam part of the Aegis Blade(s) to make them work together (plus, they'd have twice as many arts and animations to pull from). The idea's basically Pyra > average, Mythra > better speed and knockback but more endlag, Catalyst > less knockback but all attacks have a vampire effect.

Other 3rd parties? Sure. Shovel Knight? No.

Shovel Knight's one game has received multiple expansions and sold over 2 million; as far as I can tell, it's downright impossible to find any sort of quantifiable data for Shantae.

Little Mac and Dark Samus show that not being popular in Japan isn't a lockout from Smash, and both tangential and quantifiable data points to Shovel Knight being more popular.

And as I said above, "history with Nintendo" isn't a requirement at all (officially just a "courtesy", even)-- Cloud and Bayonetta show that much.

At this point, nothing more can be said on the matter-- if she gets in, I'll gladly eat my words. If she doesn't, I told you so. That's all it boils down to, really.

History is a huge factor though. I mean, G&W, Rob, and Ice Climbers haven't been relevant in decades outside of Smash, and weren't relevant at the time of being added to Smash.

(Shit, some might say that Star Fox and F-Zero are less currently relevant than Shantae these days).

They were oddball retro characters; of Smash's 3rd parties, none of them are niche and they are all from large, currently/recently active franchises (only exception being Bayonetta, who we now know was purely due to marketing/getting a cool character out there rather, with the Ballot only now really being used for Ultimate and explicitly K. Rool).

Also, keep in mind: we got Cloud. "History with Nintendo" doesn't mean a thing if there's a related more popular choice-- popularity/overall legacy is a far bigger deciding factor than "oh this character originated from a 20 year-old GBC game that bombed and only recently has had games with actual physical releases". If the devs were shopping around for an indie character, Shovel Knight would've been the most obvious choice yet he's just an AT (or how we got Simon and Snake back with Bomberman stuck in the AT position).

When you get down to it, an indie character is really just a type of 3rd party character with less notability/popularity-- the fact Shovel Knight got in as an AT is a testament to him and his game.

Captain Falcon is around purely because of the grandfather clause, and Star Fox definitely is (and has been) in limbo-- but the standards for 3rd party characters in general just seem to be higher than those for 1st party characters (with, again, Bayonetta as the exception). We'll need to have the 3rd party selection get blown wide open before obscurer choices have any serious chances; as-is, I'd say the chances are more existent for freaking Master Chief in DLC (all you need is Banjo to pave the way, who Microsoft has been very open about) than they are for characters whose defining classification is due to their lack of a publisher.

Shantae is like, my absolutely most wanted character. If she gets in, any additional newcomers will feel like a bonus (except for maybe Micaiah, but I won't delude myself into thinking she's anything more than a pipe dream).

Shantae has been discussed a lot lately though. Over at Smashboards, her support thread skyrocketed in views ever since the Shovel Knight AT was shown.

Which is painfully ironic, as logically if the bigger character is confirmed as an AT the less popular has no chance higher than that.

"You could make a whole fighting game out of swords"

...if you've got three axis to work with. Smash Bros. is a 2D fighter, despite it's characters and objects being rendered in a 3D space. So lateral sword strikes are just inferior to vertical slashes or pointed stabs. And with that in mind, all sword movesets end up looking very similar. While in a 3D space vertical chops and stabs can miss, this weakness is not present in Smash Bros. A stab covers the same space a horizontal slash does - but with more range.

I can definitely empathize with being upset over the overuse of Anime With a Sword characters. That's been my major critique of Smash 4's roster additions. Too many humans, and too many humans with pointed sticks. We want to see new fighters that look as unique as they play.

Sweeping arm blows/kicks are superior to vertical/straight ones on a 2D plane; you can just as easily turn this exact "argument" around.

"Too many humans"; can't say I've seen that categorical complaint much before.

  15. Got this on the bonus mission:

    DlU38N0WsAAzK26.jpg

Bit disappointed that it doesn't carry over, but what's more disappointing IMO is how I got this: I just rushed Minerva and Curtis around the top of the map, taking out the Grenadiers while my own took out certain enemies that got too close to them/were in their way.

Scout rushing seems to be the dominant strategy, which is something I'm not thrilled about.

  16. 1 hour ago, NinjaMonkey said:

I don't see what's wrong about people being sick and tired of having yet more sword users added the game, regardless if they have a unique take on it or not. Not only that, it shows a lack of imagination on the developers part.

    I'm so confused right now.

A character has a sword = lack of imagination on the developer's part? That just seems nonsensical. Nobody complains about all the weaponless characters/CQC fighters-- it's an arbitrary complaint over what a character has in their hands.

    >When talking about Echoes, Sakurai mentions having to make 8 versions for character artwork-- backhandedly confirming that 8 is still the limit for alt costumes. Ridley likely just has a placeholder or two for Meta Ridley, and RIP Fire Mario.
    >Confirms that the Smash Ballot was used for selecting characters, and notes that "K. Rool was very popular"-- meshing with what was already obvious to many.
    >Outright states that even though the FS Meter's meant to simulate conventional supers in other fighting games, it's probably better off for casual play-- it also charges over time.

That's right, I am ignoring what you're saying, and it's because you're not getting what I'm saying. these "leaks" are simply rumors unless they have something as concrete as gameplay footage.

Now you're moving goalposts and arguing over nomenclature.

I think you've made yourself very clear at this point and nothing more can be said, as the thread has moved on from the topic.

Anyways, some actual news to re-rail things.

Firstly, the game has officially been rated E10:

    DlMM2xMV4AElS0g.png

Some people were thinking the newcomer trailers being included would get it rated T citing their more brutal nature (though E10 games have pushed the envelope in other regards before-- the first Gunvolt game and I believe Rune Factory 4 both had a fair bit of mild language and didn't shy away from innuendo).

    Secondly, a new interview: http://www.siliconera.com/2018/08/22/sakurai-shares-more-on-the-development-music-and-stages-of-super-smash-bros-ultimate/
What sticks out to me: "Squad Strikes are elimination-style battles. Players will get to choose the number of wins required, for example first-to-three, or first-to-five, ten, and so on."
So it's not a "go until no characters are left" deal, which deftly kills the fan theories trying to measure roster size using it.

  19. 6 hours ago, Retyl said:

Cloud from Final Fantasy VII was never leaked for Smash 4, was he? Even though he's very popular. I think you're giving the leakers too much credit.

Yet the Gematsu leak goet 9/11 characters right with the two it didn't get (Chrom and Chorus Kids) were confirmed to have been considerations (the former from Sakurai's mouth, the latter due to the Rhythm Heaven series being the only series besides Ice Climbers to have an enemy in Smash Run but no playable character-- and we know the ICs were also considered; plus, there's data in the game for a Rhythm Heaven series icon). And then there was the ESRB leak, which was actually a follow-up to a text leak from months before. Plus, as I said, Ultimate's gotten more attention with every unique newcomer since Inkling being leaked.

    9 hours ago, Johann said:

The only real difference is that you believe leak one more than the other. I don't give a shit until it comes from Sakurai himself

...Except one languishes unproven while the other gains traction and actually calls stuff?

You've ignored virtually everything I've said-- maybe just admit the obvious that stuff actually leaks out instead of making yourself look even more foolish? Because really, that's what you're doing.

And I'll re-iterate: Dante is no guarantee by far. But the legitimacy of at least part of that leak has been proven, and it can't be counted out.

  20. Just now, Johann said:

I get that it feels good to latch onto something and it's mentally stimulating to think about the possibilities, but these "leakers" are straight up toying with people. There's nothing stopping me from making a fake ass "leak" of my own.

There's a difference between a random 4chan "leak" and a 4chan leak that actually seems to be a legit leak; heck, I even said (and explained why) the Smash part is very possibly not true-- yet it can't be fully discounted now.
Smash has been a leaky ship since the Brawl days, and nothing has changed with Ultimate. If anything, it's more pronounced this time around with a few regulars-- for instance, the person who described the Inkling's moveset and designs used by the Zelda characters right before E3 was also the person who talked about the Smash Direct and give specific details/a window in August talked about K. Rool before the Direct and has gone on to bring up Skull Kid and Isaac; Simon Belmont, as well as no cuts and the return of Snake, were brought up months before E3 by another person who's been claiming Ken will be an Echo Fighter (though, considering Street Fighter's tracks multiplied sixfold, doesn't sound unreasonable) and that the new Pokemon character will be Incineroar (which the other leaker has backed him up on).

I specified that the DMC 4chan leak, at least in part, has been shown to be legit and Dante can't be completely disregarded anymore while also bringing up the amount of on-point leaks Smash Ultimate has had while you're claiming "nobody is credible" and acting like Smash is some sort of super secret government project virtually nobody outside of those directly involved has details about.

You could've just left a word of caution (which would've been unnecessary, since the user posting it did the obligatory "take this with a grain of salt"), but instead you claimed in so many words that nobody actually leaks anything and it's just "kids making safe guesses" (ironic that, as I brought up, the big part of the leak that's causing it to gain traction wasn't a safe guess at all)... and then ignored every single word I said in your reply, coming out patronizing me instead.

So, I end with this again: with games as big as Smash and DMCV, no matter how hard they try and keep a lock on things, stuff will (and does, and has) leak out.
