In the last twenty years, the Metroid games released were

    • Prime 1
    • Fusion (released the same day/week as Prime 1)
    • Zero Mission
    • Prime 2
    • Prime Pinball
    • Prime Hunters
    • Prime 3
    • Other M
    • Prime Federation Force
    • Samus Returns

Only six out of ten games have prime in the title. And three of those are spinoffs. Pinball has nothing in common with actual metroid games as far as I'm aware, Hunters and Federation Force are...debatably core games. I haven't played the latter but they're shooters with some elements of exploration and depict events pertinent to the Prime trilogy's plot. So I'll be generous in saying five out of six of the Metroid Prime games are core games. But I still don't see what you mean in saying Prime is the main series when it's less than half of the games released even when only focusing on the series history starting with Prime 1.

    Okay, I forgot Zero Mission.

But notice that streak there of Prime 2, Prime Pinball, Prime Hunters, and Prime 3? It's almost like the Prime games and name got the biggest push. And as I said, spinoffs still bore the Prime name. Plus (something you even remarked), the only 2D titles to release since Prime 1/Fusion are remakes of the first two games in the series. While Other M is it's divisive oddball self (and oh look, when it came time for a spinoff again guess what style they chose to base things off of and name they used).

Even though I got a couple details wrong, I'm not sure why it's being argued that the Prime games have handily supplanted/replaced what the general gaming public thinks of and comes to expect out of Metroid; why would Prime 4 even be a thing if that wasn't the case?

  2. Considering Smash 4's DLC newcomers, people should be expecting DLC to be mostly 3rd party. It being entirely 3rd party is perfectly within the realm of reasonableness.

That said, I do personally believe that there is at least one first party character-- due to the fact that the character selection wasn't fully decided until after the game went gold and we got the November direct. Could just be a 3rd party cutting it close, though.

"He also said Zelda is based on both A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and ARMS probably would've gotten a playable character if the timing was better."

From the person that linked this to me. So with wording like that I don't think DLC is much of an option for em either.

    The tweet only says:
"Xenoblade 2 and ARMs characters just had bad timing for the project plan."

That said, considering several factors (Smash 4's DLC newcomers, what we know of Ultimate's DLC, the likelyhood of Spirits/ATs/etc. deconfirming characters) I'd say most realistically weren't expecting any non-marketing based 1st parties to begin with.

Is it crazy of me to think that not all DLC characters will be third party?

It’s because of the Mother series. Porky a major antagonist is conspicuously missing as a spirit and this year is the 30th anniversary of the Mother series, so wouldn’t it be fitting for Porky to be a DLC character?

EDIT: I just noticed, but Giygas is also missing as a spirit. This is really weird.

Earthbound's the most niche series in Smash-- I'd say that's more a testament to how little Nintendo cares about it (especially telling that Lucas was cut in the transition between Brawl and Smash 4, only being brought back as DLC) than any sort of future plans.

Just because Spirits deconfirm characters doesn't mean a character lacking a Spirit means anything much.

DoA6 has him. And DoA is connected to the Ninja Gaiden canon, might be a stretch but he's still around in the modern day.

Oh right, forgot he was in DOA... somehow.

My point still kinda stands in that his own series is dormant right now, which has kept him out of the spotlight.

Calling Ninja Gaiden niche is kind of weird though as said it’s one of the more iconic series from the NES era. The modern games were generally well received besides 3 (but then again 3 was the weakest by far). It’s been dormant sure, but he’s still around, he never misses a Dead or Alive game after all, and he’s been in a few Warriors crossovers.

That's the thing. He has legacy and isn't completely dead, but the Ninja Gaiden name hasn't been attached to anything for the past half decade-- with WO3U and All-Stars being his only notable appearances since Razor's Edge.

These decisions are being made based around what will sell. It absolutely matters what the fanbase wants if they want to maximize profit.

Then again, Piranha Plant is in the game, so idk.

The "Smash fanbase" is as vocal as it is overall miniscule; Minecraft obliterates Banjo in every quantifiable metric. Going back a bit, Cloud was considered a stupid meme character with no chances, yet look at what happened? Caused a big uproar that ended up dissipating because, what do you know, a whole lot of people were actually fine with his inclusion.

Most of the hardcore fans already bought the fighter pass, so why even waste resources pandering to them? Going for mass appeal characters/characters that would appeal to different fandoms and niches makes infinitely more sense than trying secure the dream materials of a vocal group of 90's kids who already paid up.

I guess you're right about Doom Guy. He is undoubtedly the best representation of the shooter genre, as Halo has become basically irrelevant over the past couple releases and Doom's role in founding gaming's most popular genre can't be understanded.

I get the case for Minecraft. I do. But I also don't want it at all, and I don't see any indication that Nintendo and Microsoft are working together in a meaningful sense.

Ryu Hyubusa is just odd on many levels. I know that Nintendo has worked with KT on the Warriors games, but is KT really a worthwhile company to bridge into Smash and is Ninja Gaiden anything more than a cult classic?

Halo's got console exclusivity which makes it a much bigger deal and much less likely to happen. The series still does pretty well, it's just the vocal minority complaining-- the series still doesn't have a single major release that's sold less than 5 million. There's just so much more in the way of shooters since Halo 3 launched in 2007; CoD exploded that same year, with the turn of the generation bringing about Destiny-- and not long after, Overwatch and stuff like the Doom and Wolfenstein revivals. It's a lot less ubiquitous now-- it's just part of the crowd.

Minecraft, meanwhile, is available on literally everything and MS has taken a rather hands-off approach with it. I don't think working with Nintendo has to be some sort pre-requisite.

Hayabusa would be surprising while still being somewhat recognizable, so I don't think he'd have poor reception or anything; but again, he really is the odd man out.

I think the datamine leaks are real.

Dragon Quest seems like the most likely and worthy non-represented franchise by Square for Smash.

I think the rumor leaks are fake.

Doom Guy seems implausible and Ryu Hyubusa even less likely. I'm not sure if Ninja Gaiden is even relevant enough in the modern market to pick.

And I really want Steve to be fake, for fuck's sake.

One of the higher-ups at Bethesda outright said they'd talked Smash with Nintendo not too long ago.

    https://nintendoeverything.com/pete-hines-on-bethesdas-relationship-with-nintendo-exclusives-and-smash-bros/
Finally, the interviewer couldn’t resist asking whether Bethesda has talked to Nintendo about Smash Bros. Hines simply said the following: "Oh yeah."

Doom itself was the first Bethesda port to Switch and did well enough that Doom Eternal is launching on it. It also has some historical significance, basically being the father of the FPS genre alongside Wolfenstein. And if the Smash team can make Bayonetta work, why can't they make the good ol' Doom Marine work?

Hayabusa's definitely the odd one out, though he's both classic and hardcore enough that I don't find him to be unfeasible-- again, just the odd one out.

And Minecraft is the second most prolific game in existence behind only Tetris; it's also been doing decently in Japan and is one of exceedingly few games Sakurai has written Famitsu columns about, saying it's one of the rare games that keeps him coming back. So not only is it gigantic, but Sakurai's also a fan.

Grain of salt to be sure, but none of the picks feel unfeasible.

  10. Hayabusa's the one that sticks out personally, because every other character has marketing connotations (Joker has Q2 and maybe a P5 rerelease, DQXI's launching on Switch this year, Minecraft is available on Switch and is in general the second biggest individual game in existence behind only Tetris, and Bethesda's struck up a bit of a relationship with Nintendo to the point that Doom Eternal is launching on the Switch alongside everything else).

So you go from recent and/or marketable picks to a character who hasn't had a game in years. ...Either this was a favor to KT or Ninja Gaiden is getting something. Either way, from that perspective he  feels a bit odd.

I'm not buying these leaks yet because the last time we had a leak, it turned out to be an elaborate hoax.

I find it hard to believe that's there's already coding in the game that supposedly reveals who the second DLC character is. They haven't even started on Joker yet, let alone anyone else.

It makes sense for Pirahana Plant to have coding in the game already since he's almost finished but for everyone else? Nah.

They didn't have him in a presentable state for the VGAs; that doesn't mean they didn't start on him yet.

Multiple different dataminers have put out there; there's code for "Plant" and "Jack" in the game-- including landing lag, weight, speed, etc, heck even minutae like if they can wall jump (Joker can) and have rapid jabs (both do) . As well as our spoiler character

    "Brave"

    with the same data.

Plus, remember: the majority of Smash 4's DLC characters were released alongside another one. June had the triple whammy of Lucas, Roy, and Ryu, while Bayonetta and Corrin both launched in February. I don't think it's unreasonable that Joker and the one we aren't supposed to know about yet could be launching at the same time.

I don't think being rejected from Smash 4 lowers one's chances of getting into Ultimate. Just look how many times Ridley has been turned down.

We don't know how often Ridley was considered-- and either way, he's an incredibly special case as he was the single most requested fighter for a decade+.

For every Villager and Pac-Man there's a Dixie, Excite Biker, and Takamaru; a character being rejected makes us aware that they didn't make it in before and a few have been revisited, but a lot of the time they just never make it in.

    3 hours ago, NinjaMonkey said:

He also said that they would be "characters that you would not anticipate to be in Smash", i.e. not characters like Rex & Pyra, Sylux and someone from Three Houses.

Riiiight, and according to Sakurai the rest of Smash 4's DLC after Roy, Ryu, and Lucas would be "fanservice":

    https://sourcegaming.wordpress.com/2015/06/25/ryu-roy-and-lucas-join-the-battle-sakurai-famitsu-column-vol-481/
"From now until the end, it is going to be fan service "

...Which is why only 1/3 of the character picks were fanservice, with two marketing choices (one of which was added under the blatantly false pretense of having won the Smash Ballot).

You're taking PR way too seriously and projecting onto it.

    3 hours ago, Florete said:

Don't take Reggie's words so seriously. He talked a lot without really saying anything. All he told us for sure is that the DLC will be newcomers, but that was obvious since every veteran already returned.

It was said at the VGA for as broad an audience as possible; he was just reaffiriming that all the DLC characters would be newcomers.

  13. I do think if we get a Namco character it'll be Yuri, easily. Vesperia Definitive gives him recency and marketability while also being so popular among the Tales fandom he got retired from official polls due to always getting #1. The people who want Lloyd are probably the same people who want pre-VII FF characters.

Heihachi himself is in an awkward spot, as he was a rejected fighter from Smash 4 and Pac-Man has a sprite of him now in Ultimate.

Twintelle is easily far more popular than the boring Spring Man

    Because of her butt.

Seriously, the only reason she seems to be popular is because of "thicc" jokes.

Female characters always end up disproportionately popular compared to the male ones in larger casts; FEH's CYL polls show that quite well, with the female side always having higher average votes per spot than the male side. Heck, Celica being more popular than Alm despite not being the main protagonist and basically irrelevant to the overall plot (while acting idiotic and putting herself in a damsel in distress position) is a perfect example.

I’m no competitive expert, but why Pichu is above Pikachu? And why the Pokemon Trainer so low? Ever other tier list I’ve seen places him rather high.

Pichu actually does more damage than Pikachu; I'd imagine that plays a large part in it.

Of course, something to keep in mind is that tier lists are always partially usage lists; Pokemon Trainer probably hasn't received much usage in Japan, and thus is rated lower because of it.

... I'm honestly curious how they are going to handle the gun situation with him. If you remember, they omitted guns on Snake entirely and focused solely on explosives for weapons because ... uhhh, what was the reason again? It still works for him because he has another big aspect in CQC.
On the other hand guns are a big part of Joker and otherwise he would be limited to his knives. I guess it's better than fighting barehanded for a teenager? They are pretty much soft airs so it's fine?

I could imagine it just shooting a charged beam of darkness or something and only being used as his neutral special or something.

Anyways, I sincerely doubt he'll do any sort of Persona switching-- Yu in Arena exclusively sticks to Izanagi, so I'm not expecting anything other than Arsene to show up in his moveset.
