Honestly I'm a little concerned. I'm sure it'll do well, since it's a 1st party game on Switch. But I don't think it'll be quite as huge as Awakening and Fates. The hype I've seen here and elsewhere has generally been subdued, and imo that's due to three factors: dull art, a bad direction for the second trailer/info video, and a pretty slow/lack of marketing.

The art is polarizing, and apart from the main 3 and Byleth I haven't really seen any hype for the new characters. Contrast that to Fates, for instance. I remember when the retainers were shown everyone wanted to know more about them; they looked interesting. Or with Echoes: the redesigns were really beautiful and made these old characters come alive in ways they hadn't been able to do in Gaiden.

The second showing of the game needed to create hype, and personally, it didn't do it for me. It made me (and apparently many others- even outside "the small bubble that is SF" / "minority of vocal fans") confused about what this game is trying to do. It was only after reading and watching many analyses and theories on the school system and other stuff shown off that I managed to convince myself that yeah, this could be interesting.

And finally, Nintendo have barely talked about the game. It's coming out in July, so I'm sure they'll be posting more updates now, but like... I thought we learned how to hype up an FE game after Awakening. We know the bare minimum of the story, we haven't really gotten any details on characters beyond the main lords, they haven't done a very good job explaining the gameplay...

Anyway the point is that the game feels like it's going to get a lukewarm response in terms of "new FE" numbers and word of mouth, though it's still early to know for sure. Hopefully the marketing really amps up these last few months to create hype.

Fates' hype machine didn't get rolling until two months before its Japanese release.
And the only places I've seen people complaining about the art are here and reddit. (That's also some rather selective memory, as there were plenty of complaints about SoV's redesigns being too drastic for many characters, which got an entire thread to itself here.)

We haven't even fully seen characters aside from Byleth and the main 3 at this point, so that's some false equivalency. It's hard to be interested in characters that we don't even have a personality blurb for yet. I'm anticipating that'll change in the coming weeks.

Considering how FEW and Xenoblade 2 turned out, vocal response pre-release shouldn't mean much of anything at all. Hell, especially the former-- people were accusing Nintendo of sending FEW "out to die" with basically non-existant marketing outside of Japan, yet it ended up breaking a million. If the spinoff can put up those numbers in year 1 of the Switch's lifespan, I don't see how the mainline game isn't going to do substantially more released partway through year 3 of the console's lifespan.

...At least this is a better take than TC thinking it could kill the franchise.

I thought I might have been told by a mod topics about games in development can defy the standard rules concerning necroposting, so I'm posting here.

Apparently, Retro Studios has listed some new job openings.

    http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/04/retro_studios_posts_multiple_job_listings_talks_about_joining_the_nintendo_legacy

Does this mean anything about the current pace of MP4's development?

Considering the listings are for lead art direction and key programming positions, they're likely only just now actually starting development.

I'll be surprised if the game comes out before 2022.

Should probably explain FEHs current state & revenue figures in it's 2nd year, right? What a good thing, that those passionate fans stopped caring.

FEH is a different beast entirely; it's a free to play game-- the bulk of the revenue comes from a small percentage of players. Obviously the most passionate are the ones spending (or not spending) the most money.

    That's a very realistic view. 500K ~ 1M sound's right.

Awakening: released globally two years into the system's lifespan, 2 million units, puts the series on the map with Fates performing similarly.

Warriors: Released in the Switch's first year, manages to break a million.

Xenoblade 2: Releases in the Switch's first year and is part of an up and coming series that had only two games, neither of which broke 1 million. Does 1.5 million units.

3 Houses: releasing over two years into the Switch's lifespan, part of an established and growing franchise whose past two mainline games broke 2 million and had a spinoff do 1 million. ...Less than 1 million in sales?

  4. You know people are looking for things to bitch about when they start complaining about heels.

    Anyways:

Both Leonie and Lorence have been shown with Bows and Lances; wonder if that's their focus weapons. Hilda, meanwhile, while shown with a Bow at E3 has had an Axe equipped in multiple screenshots in this batch.

if these were meant to be actual main lords instead of secondary characters, i wonder how would have been the reaction of the fanbase. i know everyone has different tastes, but dear lord these designs are awful and easily forgettable.

i really, really tried to not get bothered too much and not hate on this artist's work, but as someone who has always played all paths/routes from previous games and managed to recruit all units for the sake of army completion, i honestly don't even have the mercy to bench these guys. it's the first time in a FE game that i'd rather just let them die in battle and forget about them for the rest of the game( wich is probably what i will do lol ). but that's just me, i guess.

Because the series hasn't had its share of generic Lords and doesn't already have it's own stereotypical main character design.

And there's no point in even dwelling on your comparison because they're drastically different from any design we've had for a main character.

How are they any worse than the likes of Sain and Kent?

So, to get to one of the most important questions that will be asked of Scramble- how large is the roster going to be?

If I have P5 right, you've 9 playable characters, excluding Futaba and factoring in the new Royal girl and Mitsuhide Goron. That sounds rather small for a Musou-like experience. Unless they go for swappable and equippable Personae that significantly change things up.

It's apparently by the DQ Heroes team working on it. In addition, it's being billed as an Action RPG.

Those two things, I believe, are important here.

DQHeroes is apparantely far more different from the norm than other musou crossovers, being more of a tower-defense deal with a skill grind and so on.
In addition, both DQ Heroes games have 4 OCs-- and the first one had only 9 characters besides them.

While not exact, I do think that's the direction things will go: it'll just be the Persona 5 cast (though I do expect Futaba, as Ultimax made Rise playable) with multiple OCs padding things out, and a greater focus on gameplay mechanics divergent from normal musou faire.

If we get any bonus characters it'd probably just be Yu and maybe P3 Makoto.

  7. 1.5-2 million.

The vocal minority of the fanbase doesn't mean jack shit.
FEW breaking a million should tell people that by now.

At this point I would imagine that Fire Emblem games besides Heroes mostly exists to introduce new character designs to put on dakimakura or whatever other merch. So I don't think it's sales are all that important.

Hey guys, I found the edgelord.

I’m bummed that Atlus has been selling it so sort as they have been. If watching another series get re-releases of the game with new content, a Dynasty Warriors spin-off, freaking dancing games, a spin-off/crossover dungeon crawler with other games in the series, an appearance in the biggest crossover fighting game ever Smash Bros, crossovers in mobile games and it’s very own anime, and sitting there and watch you’re favorite series get virtually nothing in comparison is what I have to look forward to, then I’m out. I’m not going to sit here and be the third wheel.

Persona 5 has sold 2.7 million units.

As far as I can tell, the highest selling SMT game is IV... at 600k.

Honestly, I'm surprised I haven't seen a bunch of people thinking that SMTV will end up taking a lot from Persona.

speaking of SMT 5 how long has it been since that teaser? I mean I'm surprised how long we've gone without any information then again I don't follow SMT but I've been thinking about getting into the series seeing as I like Persona. It's worth a shot at least(even though in terms of tone the games are very different)

2 years since the Switch event teaser, 1 and a half since the one announcing it as SMTV.

On the subject of Byleth being a silent protagonist, that seems weird considering that he doesn't have the traits of one outside of being able to choose a female version. He doesn't have the customization features of Kris, Robin and Corrin but being able to customize the character isn't necessarily an avatar trait. The biggest question mark is that there seemingly isn't an option to rename Byleth. Usually characters with set names aren't silent protagonists though that isn't always the case (see: Link in Breath of the Wild). But for a story driven SRPG, it seems odd that Byleth would be a silent protagonist.

But if he is an avatar, then i'd actually prefer him to be silent. The issue with Kris, Robin and Corrin is that they all have established personalities and i'd much prefer if an avatar was silent. They don't seem to be taking a page out of Monolith Soft's book completely (i still think Cross is the perfect way to handle an avatar character) but it looks like Byleth might end up being the best avatar character in the series, if i'm right.

TL;DR of it is that it's probably gonna be like Persona.

  11. What I find interesting is that they seem to have axed the Weapon Triangle.

Lance users gain a skill early on that grants them 20 hit and avoid against sword users.

This meshes perfectly with footage from E3, where Edelgard didn't get any penalties against a sword user but Dimitri had a 100% hitrate vs a 59% one against another sword user.

After Nintendo picked Corrin over Azura, I don't have much faith in them necessarily picking the most worthy or unique representatives of their respective game.

And the whole "Smash always picks main characters" thing-- with Byleth getting billed over the other 3.

Anyways, my predictions are gonna be... unorthodox: basically I'm just gonna crap out a bunch of characters and say they're my educated guesses that should cover most of the spectrum:

    >Capcom: Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine
    >Namco: Yuri Lowell, Heihachi/Jin, GE3 protag/A.G.E
    >SE: It's Erdrick and this isn't even speculation at this point
    >Nintendo: Byleth, 8th Gen Pokemon
    >Platinum Games: Astral Chain protagonist (the game itself is being published by Nintendo so I could see either them or Byleth as the 3rd DLC character)
    >Microsoft: Steve
    >Ubisoft: Ezio Auditore/Assassin's Creed representation in general
    >Bethesda: Doom Slayer

Hey, just a friendly reminder; we can’t go through this whole cycle expecting nothing but 3rd parties. They generate hype, for sure, but so do Nintendo characters. My main point is that Smash is still heavily a franchise focused on Nintendo characters. If you don’t get that 3rd party character you’ve always wanted, you’ll get them eventually if the planets align in your favor.

Not as much as 3rd parties.

Smash 4's DLC newcomers should serve as a guideline-- unless a 1st party character can cross-promote they're BTFO'd. Heck, they screwed K. Rool and planned to insert Bayonetta as the "Ballot winner" from the very start.

  13. Sotthis having amnesia just furthers my theory that she's the sister/discarded part of Seiros.

We've already got an evil church so it isn't like this game is going to do much-- honestly, after the 3DS era consistently shit the bed in the writing department I'm not sure why people have any hopes for this game's story.

Jeralt just being stuck in there without full art is even further confirmation that he's going to die/be possessed/yadda yadda.

I'm mostly interested in more gameplay details and desperately hoping they don't axe the Weapon Triangle.

So... I have heard of there being a Direct in the 11th...

    https://techheading.com/sources-next-nintendo-direct-coming-on-april-11th-2019/

First discovered the news looking on Twitter, but it is everywhere now. No info. in specific seems to be datamined.

The site it originates from has made such claims as there being "something CoD related being in an upcoming Direct" and has other articles which include such topics as how to pirate Smash.

...I don't think they're worth paying much mind to.

  15. I'm gonna avoid anything FE related here/not bitch about SoV and instead talk about a game from my other favorite videogame series:

    Monster Hunter World.

I've made $50 from my complaints about this game because my review on gamefaqs got a review of the month award.

The game went all in on Western audiences at the expense of the franchise's soul. Instead of 3 second loading screens dividing areas there are seamless maps... that will instead have you running around far more than you every would in a prior game, meaning it's a lot more non-combat time in general.

The monster variety is abysmal, only focusing on 4 classes (Flying Wyverns, Bird Wyverns, Brute Wyverns, and Fanged Wyverns-- oh and Elder Dragons), with very few of the new monsters being actually original and largely re-using the movesets of monsters not in the game. In addition, several of the new monsters have hitboxes on attacks that are as bad as the 1st generation Monster Hunter games (Anjanath's the big offender here). Also, they're all reptilian monsters.

The combat itself got ruined by virtue of letting you sprint around while drinking a potion instead of being locked in place. Just like that, the risk of combat is dramatically reduced-- you will almost always heal near a monster as long as you have stamina to sprint and keep an eye on it.

The balance is absolutely awful. Several weapons get to just vomit out ludicrously powerful attacks almost for free while others are forced to actually play the game (it's telling that the slowest time in speedhunts is generally 7-8 times as slow as the fastest time-- compared to Generations where it was "only" twice as much).

Also, the soundtrack sucks and the visuals are dull and gritty, with the whole game looking very desaturated. And there's no blood flashes on hit.

...However, I did like how every weapon type gained multiple new moves.

  16. https://www.wsj.com/articles/nintendo-to-launch-two-new-switch-models-11553494773

Though the article itself is paywalled, the preview tells most and a Siliconera article seems to tell the rest:
    https://www.siliconera.com/2019/03/25/nintendo-switch-is-reportedly-getting-a-new-upgraded-model-and-a-cheaper-casual-model/

One of them's going to be a smaller, cheaper version and the other is going to basically be a "Switch Pro".

And shame XCX2 is not going to be that next game. "Goddess/Godslayer Elma" or some new character who becomes the star of XCX2 and ends up destroying whatever the true antagonist of humanity via special powers (although no crazy powers would be fine) would be great. I'm still going to buy the game though, and probably its Smash rep if I ever get the game.

We know their next game is not related to X in any way (probably). They had concept art out and a recruitment drive going on in August 2017; based on the art and job listings, it's going to be straight fantasy (minimal sci-fi influence, at least on the surface) and more online and action focused in the gameplay department. May or may not be unconnected to the Xenoblade name entirely.

If they decide to do Echoes alongside some of the actual DLC fighters, then that could fill up slots and take out the need for a third fighter's pass if they did at least 5 Echoes.

I guess I should also mention that there's a rumor about an alternate costume of some kind for Joker.

If it's not an alternate costume, "Jane" might be an Echo Fighter and fill up one of the 15 slots alongside Joker, which would leave 13 slots left.

This info being found a month ago is what got me and other people thinking that there would be a female protagonist in a P5 re-release and Nintendo was cross-promoting with Atlus over it. (It's incredibly odd that we didn't get any gameplay footage in February, despite Corrin and Bayo being shown off 2 months in advance-- all we've got is "end of April", and the actual P5R news drops on the 23rd/24th).

But the fact they are an alternate costume already IMO completely rules out the chances of them being an Echo fighter.
