  1. You know, maybe it's just me, but I don't think the writers put much thought into the timeline when he wrote that support.

I mean, there is no way Camilla is below 20. I think 22 is already pretty low. And putting Kamui at 20 is quite high for me.

Maybe if you use the 'older male' body type. But the defaults don't really look like that, to say nothing of the young female model.

  2. My thoughts on the royals are more like this:

    Marx and Ryouma: 23 - 26

    Camilla: 21 - 23

    Hinoka: 19 - 21

    Kamui: 17 - 19

    Leon and Takumi: 16 - 18

    Sakura: 14 - 15

    Elise: 13 - 14

My guesses are purely based on appereance and general 'maturity level' (although then I'd have Elise be 9 - 12, but that's not supported by the story.)

  3. I don't disagree with your analysis but I would point one thing out. When a character dislikes you, the player, outside of context, they will be met with criticism. However, as we've seen by the release of the game and Takumi becoming the most popular character (for one poll, but is widely considered one of the best written characters even on these forums), when their context is shown, they might become even more liked than those who worship the player (Camilla).

I understand IS's apprehension at creating a avatar that isn't universally loved, but I think the playerbase could handle it.

I agree, but IntSys probably isn't going to make that conclusion, because the rest of the poll celebrated the game and all its features. From what I can tell, not many people in Japan complained about the player worship (correct me if I am wrong), so I don't see Intsys changing something that in their minds isn't broken. And japanese companies rarely care about the opinions of the western fandoms of their games (unkess you are talking stuff like Pokémon and Mario).

  4. I do like avatar characters when they are used well. But only when I can realy go all the way and make choices (that actually matter) during the game, so as to actually define my own personality through them.

This is why I do not like most jrpg avatars, because they are usually made to be a complete blank personality wise so as to accomodate the biggest number of players.

Over the years I've gotten used to this and don't really mind it anymore. I still don't like it, but I tend to just roll with it.

I didn't play FE12, so I can't comment on Kris. Mark was barely even present, so I generally do not count him.

Robin was alright, sometimes a bit too subdued for my tastes, but generally acceptable.

However, Fates takes this to a completely new level with the amount of worship that is thrown at Kamui, who might as well be a cardboard cutout for you to scribble your face on. And nothing else.

Most instances of excessive player worship have already been mentioned here so I'll skip that.

But why is IntSys going so far overboard with it? Because many players desire it, and love all the praise heaped at them, marrying all the waifus/husbandos etc.

And this doesn't just go for the japanese fandom either.

Just look at what happened with the one character who isn't all over Kamui; Takumi was instantly disliked by many simply because he distrusts Kamui at the beginning.

This mostly went away once the actual games were released, at least among those who kept up with it. But the initial reaction to a character not liking the avatar, even for understandable reasons, was to dismiss him immediately.

My point is, that Intsys making the avatar universally loved has a logic behind it. People often do not take kindly to their in-game self being criticised. They could have of put in some more effort and try to make the avatar more realistically flawed and integrated into the world. But that carries the risk of alienating their audience, so they took the lazy route and went for unconditional love from 99.9% of the playable cast. And they got their cash so I seriously doubt this will change with the next game.

  5. Not very optimal as you might have guessed. Sakura's magic gets wasted on Seigbert's low natural magic growth, and her 30 STR doesn't make him a heavy hitter that he could be. Skill wise, he gets all possible skills from his dad as well as the priestess class, which isn't very great considering. Only ones he could use well is Renewal and magic counter.

Very nice Luck, though. Sakura could get Luna and Aegis, but Xander doesn't need the skills so much, and it's not really worth reclassing for them.

    3 STR, 2 MAG, -1 SKL, 1 SPD, 3 LUK, 1 DEF, -1 RES

Thanks again. At least it's not as bad as I thought. I'll just have to deal with the fact that some of my favourite pairings result in subpar children. I will still do them anyway.

  6. Hinoka can definitely take advantage of Lifetaker and Bowbreaker, and Leo definitely likes the SPD boost from the pair-up.

It's Foleo, that's the problem, yeah. Hinoka's and Leo's mods basically cancel eachother out. Those mods aren't really better than a first gen unit.

Thanks, looks like I can at least still use him. It's stupid when one of your pairings produces an underwhelming unit, but what can you do..

    Any suggestions on Sakura!Siegbert?

  7. Is there any way a Hinoka!Foleo would be useable? I am not that deep into the mechanics yet, but from what I can tell the only thing he'd have going for him would be massive resistance.

I know a Sakura!Foleo would be much more optimal, but I just prefer HinokaxLeon.

    Any tips?

  8. All: No one really stands out to me.

Hoshido Male: Orochi (my speed asset shall save you~) and Rinkah (why are all my favourite ladies such tough maintenance??).

Hoshido Female: Hinata (I swear this a conspiracy! So many of my favourites are unoptimal.), Shara (Because principles. Also she's pretty to look at and a great unit)

Nohr Male: Charlotte (Axe lady with great personality? Yes please!), Zero (because Zero)

Nohr Female: Zero (duh), Lazwald (too bad I am not a fan of Soleil)

    IK : Zero.

  9. They let the queen rule unmarried until death. There is seemingly no gender bias regarding leadership in Hoshido or Nohr, as in the ending of Birthright Camilla mentions she's the monarch now that Xander and Garon have died (although she decides to give up the throne to Leo anyways).

Not sure if this was confirmed, but I read in a summary somewhere that at the Hinoka says that she is Queen now, because both Ryoma and Takumi are dead. Maybe it's a translation error, but if not that would mean Hoshido runs under male preferance law. Mikoto probably became Queen because Ryouma was underage at the time, and once he came of age he decided not to press the issue as long as Mikoto was alive. Again this is pure speculation based on a fan-translation, so take with a grain of salt.

  10. Felicia, because her hair is exactly the wrong shade of pink. It's a shame too, Foleo would have looked so much cuter with a more vibrant tone. Hinoka's red is too glaring, which is bad considering I ship HinoLeo in IK..

Belka and Pieri's hair colour just looks wrong on so many kids. The tone makes it look like a cheap kind of plastic

  11. By now I have gotten used to the japanese voices for the characters. Hearing them in English will definitly be weird at first soo..

My first few playthroughs will be with Japanese voices, but afterwards I can see myself changing to the dub just to keep things fresh.

Unless the dub is absolute crap, of course. But since Awakening was so good I don't think that'll be the case.

  12. About the whole cutting characters thing: Not all characters need to be three-dimensional, as long as they don't make an impact in the story, like, say Suzukaze.

Yeah, I don't want (nor have the meansf or)all of them to be three-dimensional, but the way the cast is structured there'd be too many instances of someone receiving a three sentence mention before they disappear again. Kamui's personal cloud is already big as it is and Flora, Jakob and Felicia would probably work better as a single character rather than Maid1, Maid2 and the Butler.

  13. I am generally having problems with all the characters that need to be incorporated into the plot, so I'll be cutting some of them.

Candidates include: all of the children (except Siegbert and Shinonome, who are getting cameos as babies at the end of each route), Jakob and Flora (or rather I'll make Felicia a composite of their characters), maybe Aqua (since I have trouble finding space for her in my story), Lilith, Hydra and all characters exclusive to the 3rd route.

Fates has very extensive cast, which can be hard to work with and keep track of. I prefer working with a smaller cast, so I can have more time to develop and show off each and every one of them. I make sure that I (while writing) know what all the characters are doing at any given time, so I don't accidently forget about them and can set up their involvement better.

  14. B-but muh dragons!

I think you can still keep the vague dragon lineage for both sides of the royal families, just not give Kamui super special dragon blood. Basically it would just be a part of the lore to justify the use of dragon's vein. I really liked the idea of having a protagonist who was part dragon, but if they are not even going to explore it properly (and how could they when the theme is supposed to be about family) they might as well not include it.

I'm getting really excited for the fan fictions that could spawn from this thread. It will be the best Fire Emblem that never was.

Yeah, I could maybe put in some references to dragon myths. Maybe as a way to find a connection for both royal families and nations. But it's not gonna be more than a vague background detail, as I am much more invested in the human element and the more fantasy you add to a story the easier it is the more it gets bogged down by it. I prefer the way George treats his fantasy; as an essential part of the experience but always secondary to the human conflicts.

If I ever finish this project, I am going to try and do some rewriting of Birthright as well. Though I think the story doesn't need to change as drastically. I probably won't do a third route for my setup, since I have ditched most of the dragons and I found the "two sides, one choice" better than "two sides, but you can totally save everyone anyway" thing.

  15. This, so much. Another way they they could ease into the eventual rebellion is having them try to reform Nohr without directly opposing their father. They could be doing things like policing crime or secretly hiring assassins like Belka to kill corrupt lords. I like the idea of Camilla secretly working for a better Nohr, especially because she will have a purpose other than to be Kamui's wife.

It doesn't need to be an immediate rebellion/plot to kill Garon. It would be something gradual and the civil war/open rebellion part wouldn't come until much later.

Well, I am thinking of using the Hoshido/Nohr war as a backdrop for the rising conflicts within the Nohrian royalty, Kamui's doubts and Camilla's slowly setting up her plan. That way it would make sense to spread it over more chapters. The rebellion doesn't come out of the blue and the invasion of Hoshido is more than just meaningless fluff.

And as a sidenote, I am also going to surgically remove everything related to dragons from the plot. Kamui is the son/daughter (haven't decided yet) of Sumeragi and Mikoto, just like the other Hoshidan siblings. He/She was kidnapped in an early attempt to force Hoshido to open its borders.

  16. In the actual story of Nohr, weren't Garon and Iago most adamant about killing off the older two more so than Takumi and Sakura? If that holds true, then it would make most sense for Ryouma and Hinoka to die. Honestly, I cannot see a situation where Ryouma does not die because he's arguably putting himself in the most danger AND is in the most powerful position of all of the Hoshido royals. To be a good writer or to write a good story, sometimes you have to kill off characters you love if the plot calls for it. Much as I like Takumi, if I had to kill him off in order for one of my stories to not be shit, I'm doing it in that particular story because it is necessary.

I haven't played the game yet so I can't be certain of this, but I read somewhere that Hinoka states in the epilogue that she only became Queen because Ryouma and Takumi were dead. This implies that Hoshido has Agnatic-preferance as their inheritance law (The rulers male children inherit before the female ones) In this case it makes more sense for Garon to want to see Ryouma and Takumi dead, because Hinoka and Sakura's claim would be slightly less uncontested in Hoshido (my guess here). Don't know if this is true.

And yes, Takumi is my favourite character and all, but since in my story his death seems to serve more of a purpose than him living I'll have to go with it. And really, I have grown so used to my favourite characters dying that one more won't break me. I am a hardened Asoiaf veteran
