  1. My choices were:

    Mozume (cute country girl),

    Silas (best mate),

Takumi (my overall favourite), Ryoma (big bro), Marx (big bro 2), Leon (my second overall favourite), Zero (because duh)

Sakura (the cutest), Hinoka (second best design and cool personality), Rinkah (best design), Camilla (she grew on me), Nyx/Charlotte/Flora (great and interesting personalities)

All royal kids plus Kanna and Eponine

Yeah I have voted for a lot of characters, but hey if I get the option...

If I was forced to just choose one it would be:

    Mozume, Silas, Takumi, Charlotte, Eponine.

  2. Yes, this makes me so happy!! And the fanart of Kamui and Takumi as a pairing (aka TakuKamu) is really good <3

So I am not the only one hounding pixiv for fanart of him. The fact that he is so popular with the pixiv crowd gives me hope for eventual popularity polls.

I know this is just a pipe dream right now, but it would be awesome if they decided which Fates characters to put into Smash Brothers based on that. Takumi in Smash would be the greatest thing.

Shouldn't get my hopes up too high though.

  3. It's a pet peeve of mine too, but for some reason, I don't really mind the third person speech that much when Midoriko does it.

Which might be because Midoriko is an actual child.

Baby 3rd person speech is only tolerable on really young kids.

  4. The characters I really don't like (hate being too strong a word):

Pieri, because of her shrill voice, and overdone personality that just grates me.

Felicia, another shrill voice. Her personality is way too boring a trope.

Soleil, because well...I don't think I need to elaborate.

  5. I really really like him together with Kamui; they aren't related by blood so I don't have any issue with pairing them together and in my opinion they have one of the most romantic supports in the game.

Anyway, Takumi's rad and poor cinnamon roll doesn't deserve to suffer.

I've heard some people disliked his supports with Kisaragi because he envied his talent with the bow and this made him feel even less secure about himself but gosh this actually is a really human feeling. People aren't all good or all bad, there aren't perfect beings. And Kisaragi is an awesome son, man. When he told Takumi to "say he was awesome" because he didn't want his father to say bad stuff about himself I CAN'T EVEN. One of the best family supports I've read.

I know how you feel. I don't really have a problem with Takumi/Kamui on principle; they aren't blood related and they didn't grow up together. But the whole sibling treatment that gets pushed so much weirds me out. He still refers to Kamui as sister in his freakin S-support and Confession. Damn you IS *shakes fist*

The pairing does make a certain amount of sense though: Kamui can have literally *everyone*, and they are all more than ready to throw themselves at her, so who does she go for? The one who stands out by not doing that stuff!

    As for the other thing,

His support with Kisaragi is absolutely adorable, what with him being so damn insecure even with his own son. He obviously wants to be the best dad for him, but feels he can't live up to that. So then Kisaragi insists he should see himself in a better light, because he certainly thinks of Takumi as the best dad ever! And it's so so sweet. I don't understand why people dislike that support.

  6. Takumi is my favourite character so far. He is conflicted and comes across a bit hostile at first (and with good reason), but it's clear that he has a lot of insecurity issues and I can really sympathize with that.

I don't need every character to worship me unconditionally, that gets boring oh so fast. Takumi takes a bit to warm to Kamui first, and even then he still acts like a normal person without joining in the overdone praise everyone heaps on Kamui.

It's nice. Sadly this, his class, and some of the stuff that happens in story (which isn't even really his fault) is what makes him disliked by many.

    Well it's their loss.

As for the amie thing, yeah it looks weird, but has anyone seen Severa? Her head looks tiny.

  7. Oh I miss them.

Problem is, IS seem to want to get away from the 'people actually die when they're killed' part more and more, up to ridiculous level.

Yes it's sad, because perma death is one of the things that makes Fire Emblem so iconic. I was often frustrated when one of my units died and I had to reset, but it really challenged me to rethink my strategy and become better at the game so all my units survived. There is no need to remove Casual mode or even Phoenix mode, but at least make Classic the 'main mode' again, so we can get more (or should I say any) fleshed out alternate dialogues in case of someones death.

They should at least do it for the MU, since all it would take would be one line from whoever was the main support in that chapter.

  8. You know, some of those death quotes are really sad and all, but..

Does anyone kind of miss the death "conversations" that were in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn? I'd sure love to see at least some form of reaction from the sibs when Kamui goes down yes I am a sadist.

  9. Mother/Child, brah. Shes a fashionista, hes a fashionista, getting it from his mum. Imagine Oboro fawning over how adorable her son's fashions are and trying to get him to ditch the "ugly Nohrian stuff" for a lovely kimono. Omg headcanoning that right now.

Sadly, Leon can't marry Oboro. But you could make Oboro marry some supportable dude who has a daughter and then marry her to Foleo. Just imagine them bonding over making the wedding dresses!

  10. I doubt they'd do that. The days where things like that were accepted are thankfully over. Remember Zoisite and Fish Eye?That was in the nineties. Paper Mario is aimed at a children audience, unlike this game (unless they gut it like a fish and leaves us with the hollowed out remains).

Foleo is a cisgender male who is into crossdressing and will be treated like that.

  11. I don't think it's cultural roots, just different target audiences. Console gaming in Japan is seen as something for children, teenagers and otaku, not "normal" adults (who have way too long work hours most of the time), while in the West nowadays it's fairly common to primarily target adult audiences.

Anywaym Awakening actually sold more than twice as much internationally compared to Japan. However, I can't see them tailoring a FE completely for the West though, since that'd likely involve not only a more adult story, but also dumping the anime art style and such. Some aspects of FE are also held back due to the gameplay structure itself. For example, you aren't likely to get much tension among your own units, considering how it'd make no sense with the support system, and actually making a unit turn traitor or turn against the party would basically make it worhtless gameplay-wise.

Okay so it's not only cultural roots. But there is certainly an element to it. Looking at popularity polls for games, the heroine (if she is the supporting protag) usually ranks in the top three in Japan. In Western fandoms that is usually not the case, where she is often seen as forced and "in the way". Japanese people are usually fine with a canon romance among optional ones.

As for your other point: if the betrayal is a result of the players bad decisions it's completely justified, as you can correct your actions if you really want to keep that unit.

If they can have conditional deaths, why not betrayal? it's not that different from a gameplay aspect.

  12. True, but I was referring to the general attitude displayed by the japanese fandom. Of course there are always people on both sides of the world who prefer things that most others around them don't. There are also japanese games that allow for more choice and customization, but I was talking about the general attitude.

When you look at the style of most japanese rpgs versus western rpgs you can see a certain tendency for both. Fates takes it to the extreme as it does for most of its features, but it still comes from the basic cultural roots.

  13. I'd like to once again say how much this is endorsed by japanese culture. The japanese are fine with not having a lot of choices, they are fine with having a default love-interest every time (Aqua in this case, Sumia/Robin in Awakening etc.) and ultimately prefer their protagonists to be a standard goody goody. Western fandom is kind of the opposite. We like having a direct agency in the world, control every aspect of our characters personality, have multiple options for love-interests and like our protagonists to be a bit morally questionable.

Fire Emblem is still a series primarily aimed at a japanese audience, the western fandom is still rather small by comparison.

But this can change, once we reach more of an equilibrium. The first Pokémon games had lots of japanese weirdness in it, that got subsequently removed in the sequels once it was clear how big the western fandom was. Their need to cater to an international audience made them think about what we like over here.

If Fire Emblem reaches even more popularity in the west, things might improve for us. It doesn't even need to be as popular as Pokémon (because let's be honest, it never will be), but at least so much that IntSys will feel the need to listen to what we desire.

  14. It's getting worse each game in terms of kids reasons:

FE4: Kids got born ->parents died -> years past -> pick up where we left off

FE13: the kids come from the a ruined future and travel to the past to save their parents and their unborn selfs a world of pain. There's also a gazillion different worlds with more peeps in them.

FE14: People get married, have kids in the middle of war, shove them into alternate dimensions to grow up by themselves (save for occasional visits), they grow up super fast and them come to help the parents fight.

With how ridiculous the explanations are getting, I am really fearing for FE15.

Mabye they should just skip the silly explanations and have the kids born like Athena: fully grown and ready to fight.

  15. I like player inserts, I do, but only if they can be defined as distinct characters instead of being a generic goody two-shoes. Robin was pretty bland, yes, but even he had moments where he does the necessary thing, such as lighting up 1000 Valmese ships, packed with soldiers from stem to stern or hunting down fleeing enemies when he can (as he mentioned in his support with Severa).

Yeah, but he is never really called out on it. Burning those ships is portrayed as a heroic act of tactical brilliance. No mention is made of the horrors the enemy soldiers went through.

I think the whole player worshipping thing would be more bearable if it was actually a result of our own decisions. In Dragon Age for example we get praised when we do good things, and called out if we do stupid/evil things. And even well-intentioned decisions can turn out really badly, but they are our decisions.

Fates may have hyped the whole choice thing, but looking at it objectively it's pretty laughable. One choice determined mostly by what version you buy beforehand and-

A few avoidable deaths thrown in here and there

-but nothing of substance. Nothing that gives us true agency or the chance to built Kamui as anything other than generic RPG Hero #298454.

This is what makes the worshipping feel the most displaced. If there were more decisions for our actions and more chances to anger people and drive them away from the team, it wouldn't feel all too bad to receive adoration for doing really well.

But I doubt FE will ever reach those levels of player freedom. (Most) Jrpgs never really do, because it's not seen as very appealing in japanese culture.

  16. EDIT: Note to say that Tsubaki/Hinoka and Oboro/Tsukuyomi are up on my pastebin.

Thank you so much for that. Well, I'll have to say the C-A are decent, but the S is still awkward like always.

Not that I didn't expect it at this point.

Let's hope for a day when romantic supports are universally good and well developed..

  17. Personally, I have never understood the appeal of an 'evil route'. I just don't like/have fun playing as a complete monster who slaughters people for fun, outside of games like Skyrim where I just didn't feel any emotional connection to any of the characters. In games with a preestablished storyline and characters that I like..why would I want to kill them all? If that ends up as a dlc I'll be fine with it, because it saves me some money.

  18. So I have been following the whole mess and yeah..that support is absolutely awful, but I don't think it was intended as a gay conversion. It's just bad bad writing and questionable cultural values put into action.

And after reading the support with her mom it makes me somewhat uneasy of my decision to marry Lazward. What do you call that? An Oedipus complex? An Electra complex? An Oedictra complex?

Flannel and Velour's support is also rather creepy. The incest fetish goes deep in this game.

In other news, I have found a Soleil support that is acutally servicable.

It's her with Kisaragi and it's actually sort of cute:

I hope the translation will clean up the mess of her other supports.

  19. I really love most Hoshido characters, there is really no one I hate.

The Hoshido siblings might not seem as "cool" to some people, but I think they are actually really interesting. Especially Takumi shows a lot of character depth both in the story and in his supports. People shouldn't be so hard on him.

As for the other characters, they might not be as in-your-face as the Nohr ones but they seem likable and unique (except the kids and Tsukuyomi obv.) in their own ways.

I think it's the way Hoshido was marketed as 'less complex' and ' more goody goody' than Nohr that makes it less popular on these forums. Turns out, most people who have played the game apparently preferred Hoshido over Nohr, at least from a story perspective.
