  1. I've been thinking about something similar for a while now, and I was hoping they'd introduce it in 3H, but sadly they didn't. Here's my idea for a separate mount and rider system:

    • Mounts need to be bought with money, sometimes a new recruited unit brings their own.
    • assigning a mount to a unit makes them a mounted version of their class (example: cleric -> troubadour) at the start of each chapter
    • In combat they take half the damage their rider receives, if they run out of HP they either flee or die and are removed from the game.
    • If the user chooser to dismount, the mount goes back to your inventory.
    • Either way, if a unit chose to dismount, they cannot mount again until next chapter (so no dismount-go down stairs-mount again)
    • A mounted unit gains additional movement and canto
    • a mount may form a bond with the rider to receive less damage.
    • maybe mounted units cannot use longer range weaponry (siege tomes/longbows) to make ranged attack canto less OP.

Personally I would love such a system and believe it adds to the strategic value.

  2. Slitherers kept me at the edge of my seat, waiting for the big reveal of their plot, only to be disappointed at the end. Garon just had me annoyed with his villainous nature while everyone around him pretended it was more of a gray area. There's something to be said for both, but if both of them got a backstory DLC that expanded their story, I can imagine the slitherers becoming a lot better, I can't imagine that for Garon.

No. While there are some cliches and such that commonly show up among the stories of the FE games (like the fact that the prologue often features the main character facing down bandits, for example), this game is about the only one that actually cribs a story from a prior game.

I may not remember the full story of Marth's games, but I do remember the basic story, in which Marth's kingdom gets taken over, and then he goes around the world to find allies to take it back, right? I'm currently playing FE6 again, and Eliwood is still sitting safely in his home in chapter 7. I don't see it, but maybe I'm missing something here.

I don't see why you said "for ltc and ranked runs", because even in casual runs they take a shitload of effort to get anywhere and the payoff isn't even remotely close to worth it. I mean, I like taking weak units and building them up to be badasses, but... when you have a unit that requires a shitload of patience to raise and isn't even that great when trained... I have to question why that unit even exists. Anyway, while Fire Emblem in general is somewhat unique in having to factor in the possibility that characters have died, it doesn't change the fact that if a character is so shitty they struggle to contribute even when they join, never mind having been benched for a while because I had another unit that could do their job and now you need them, I'd rather just continue to invest in the decent units left instead of trying to babysit a unit that won't pull their weight for most of the game, if ever, and thus would end up being a liability instead of an asset just for the sake of filling a deployment slot.

It's okay that these units don't fall in the type of units you like to use, simply don't use them and accept these may not be for you, but others can still enjoy them, like me.

  4. Oh, votes are more spread out than I thought. Thank you all for sharing your opinions, there are some interesting points brought up.

    I purposely didn't give my opinion in the opening post, so here's my opinion;

Personally, I love this system. It makes positioning and range much more important, and as many have said, discourages low-manning (which is my usual tactic in FE). I don't even mind that I'm constantly equipping other weapons on my units to get the boost.

    There are some points I believe they could improve or change to make the system even better though;
    - The boosts should always be active, for all teams, in all phases
    - I believe this should be a standard boost, not based on support level (so keep support bonuses separate.)
    - The longer the range is, the lesser the bonus should be, this somewhat solves siege tomes

How does buying S-supports with NG+ work? I was just able to buy some S-supports that I never unlocked, for some characters (Annette, Leonie, Hapi, Constance, etc.) but I'm unable to buy them for others (such as Mercedes). I know that if I unlock an S-support after beating the game, I can obviously buy that one with renown, but why am I able to buy some that I've never unlocked before?

(Note: If it matters, I've beaten all 4 routes, once as MByleth, three times as FByleth, and currently on my fifth route as MByleth)

I want to unlock as many S-supports as I can, maybe even all of them, so if there's any faster way I can do about this (besides beating the final maps over and over again), it would help a lot.

I recently noticed this as well, apparently if you got enough support points to view a certain support, you can then buy that support on the next NG+, even if you haven't actually viewed the support. Buying an S support won't allow you to view it though, for that you still need to select that unit before the final chapter.

That does make me wonder though, does buying an S support give you the S support linked attack bonus?

I don’t see why you don’t like Alan and Lance. They’re good but not overpowered.

Yeah it's kind of a bad example for a bad joke, they're solid units that don't require much work to use, but are never too strong either. I'm usually just not a fan of cavaliers since my infantry gets left behind if I use them to their fullest. (and infantry are usually the coolest characters to me.)

  8. I know I'm not the average FE player, but for me FE6 is one of my favorite games, and not a mess at all.

I understand that for ltc and ranked runs Sophia and Wendy/Gwendolyn must be awful units, but for me they are perfect. They start out really weak and take a mountain of work to make in any way usable, exactly how I like it. This game provides plenty of units for my style of play, and I love it. Too bad this game gives me strong units like Alan and Lance, seems kind of unnecessary (jk, I don't mind ALance, they don't ruin the experience at all I can just dump them after the first chapter).

I've been using Sophia in pretty much all my playthroughs, and I've played it more than a couple dozen times, mostly on hard mode. She's not unusable you just need a certain playstyle, one that not many FE players have apparently. I'm just glad this game also caters to my preferences.

As for story, this is also one of my favorite games. If the plot being too much like another FE is the problem, then shouldn't all FE be the problem? After all almost all FE games can be summarized as "a young noble's land is attacked, after going to war with the opposing country a larger plot is revealed"? Zephiel's speech at the end actually succeeded in winning me to his side back when I first played it when I was 14 or so, not many villains can do that. But I guess this is personal preference so not much to discuss here.

I usually don't like the jeigan archetype, but FE6 just handles it too perfectly. If you want to low man this game you can very easily unequip him and use him as a meat shield in the early chapters, then when he starts to lose usefulness, but if your team can't quite miss him yet, there's Zealot to take his place. And it has never happened for me before but there's even a third to take over from him. Best thing is, it doesn't cost me any precious experience for my "unusable" units.

Only thing I dislike is the reinforcements moving on deploy, but after a few playthroughs I learned them by heart and they don't bother me as much anymore.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, what may look like a mess for one player, may be a haven of balance for another, depending on your preferences.

Doesn't the main character have to be a cost 1 unit? How can Grima be a main character, unless I am missing something

Is it from Leveling up a grima onto Robin, technically making the main character grima?

Each Grima card has an effect allowing them to level up from a robin. So yes, your 1 cost has to be a Robin, that you later place a Grima on top of.

  10. I love Three Houses. There are some things that I could complain about, but the fact is, if the next FE has the exact same gameplay, I'd be first in line to get it. I also love a lot of the characters and the story was pretty good.

Only reason it didn't become my favorite game is because PoR has cemented itself as my favorite since a long time. If you objectively ask me which game I enjoy playing most it's 3H. (I don't even mind playing part 1 a hundred times, I replay all FE games continuously anyways.)

One thing I'd like to note is that I find the customization very fitting to the story of 3H, were they to just shoehorn it in without fitting it to the story for the next FE, I'd probably hate it just as much as the 2nd gen of Fates.

  11. Linked Attacks give a bonus to hit and avoid (and sometimes might) to units attacking an enemy in range of other allies. (For a full explanation look here) Its use increases with support level between those allies. Many FE games before have given allies with support levels bonuses to being nearby, but this is the first FE game to use linked attacks for support bonuses.

I have seen a lot of topics about discussing new elements 3H has introduced, but none about linked attacks. (Hope I didn't just miss them, I did try searching for them.) This made me wonder, how do people actually view this new mechanic? Do people generally agree on whether it's good or not, and whether or not it should become a new staple in Fire Emblem?

So please, discuss, what are your feelings towards Linked Attacks?

  12. The hero class is not very useful, but it looks cool, and I guess it helps if you want to teach axes to a male character that usually uses swords. Its use is very limited and generally not an interesting option. Which makes it perfect in a 1 class only challenge.

One use I've heard of is an enemy phase build, since hero has vantage built in an enemy phase build leaves you one additional skill slot. (Though Warrior and then war master still sounds better.)

Male Byleth seems to fit the class best, imo. Though swordmaster or assassin is still better.

  13. Usually in Fire Emblem the average level of enemies in a map stays the same, even if you grind. This way grinding makes the game easier.

I could be remembering this wrong, but it could be that paralogues actually do increase in level with your units, I remember these chapters to be a lot harder to solo with Robin alone.

  14. 3) Byleth X Marianne

Maybe just because I recently read their S support, but Marianne's growth throughout the supports is amazing. I had the same feeling with Bernadetta's progress, except the S support seemed to undo all progress for her. Marianne on the other side shines brighter than ever in her S support, I'm so proud of her.

    2) Jill X Lethe

I genuinely believe this is objectively the best support in Fire Emblem. It's been a while since I've read it though, but I remember the progress these characters make is amazing.

    1) Lute X Artur

Maybe not objectively the best, but definitely my favorite. Lute is my favorite character of all time, and this support shows her at her best. Especially the A support brings me such happiness. Obviously her supports are number one for me, even her supports are superior after all.

  15. I had to cancel all my events during the weekends. I have about 6 D&D groups that are hard to plan, yet we found dates that worked for everybody, I had a fantasy fair planned for end of this month, a larp for next month, planned to go to the market to get fabrics for my next cosplay, and was going to get a group together to playtest a new boardgame I've been working on. I've had to cancel all of it.

As for work, my boss decided I can't work from home, so I still have to come in 40 hours a week.

Everything fun got canceled, otherwise life continues as normal. At least public transportation is really quiet these days...

I don't think it's worth it to use the BEXP on Sothe since I can't really expect much, if any, improvement without some serious RNG luck. Well, that, and I'd think it's better to just cap out the characters you've been using with the BEXP instead. Not to mention thanks to Blossom, he requires more BEXP anyway.

I just took a look at his actual average stats, and fair, it appears my approach only works for my very specific playstyle. The units I play with reach max level naturally very easily, which means there's no bexp required there. And I only use stat boosters to cap stats, which means that I'm left with a bunch of statboosters I can dump on Sothe for a one-on-one conversion to RD.

But yes, if any of your used units aren't max level before the final chapter, use your bexp to max them out. (Even if it won't make them cap any stats)

  17. I've had one idea for years, only now I realize it is kind of similar to the battle of the eagle and lion in 3H.

The goal is simply to reach the other side of the map, twist is, there are 2 other armies, much much larger armies than yours. The other armies will mainly try to attack each other, but if your units are in the way, they will be targeted. All you need to do is pass through this battlefield to the other side. Bonus objective: some units in the other armies are named, make sure they stay alive so you can recruit them later.

You can let these other armies wear each other out for a while first, to make things easier. But that might cost you possible recruits, or maybe the chapter could be lost if you let it get so far that an opponent general gets defeated before you reach the other side of the chapter.

I didn't expect most people to train Sothe to level 20 because of Volke, but this is neat.

If you have a lot of bexp leftover at the end of the game your best option for an easier RD are either Sothe or Geoffrey, IMO. They have the biggest impact yet require the least bexp to max from base level. (You might expect Haar but I believe he is strong enough as is, plus doesn't cap a whole lot naturally iirc. Nephenee, Marcia and Jill could be strong contenders but cost too much bexp usually.) In my experience either way~
