The attack would work but it's basically the same as a failed support anyway since it provides 0 support values.

I believe this is incorrect, the support still works, meaning attack/defense emblems still take effect and other skills that activate on support-fails don't activate.

I don't think it would make much sense lore-wise for mundane poison to negate magical healing. But I do think that having another status ailment, called curse, that disabled healing would be interesting.

Magical beasts exist in Fire Emblem, so why not magical poisons that repel white healing magic? Nobody said anything about poisons being "mundane". =P

(That said, if they were to make an FE where magic and magical beasts play a smaller role, it wouldn't really make much sense from a lore-perspective, no.)

  3. While half-proxies are probably the best way to do it, creating them takes quite some time. What I did was create small notes with the card's effects and put them behind the cards into their sleeves. After a few games I usually know my cards by heart and only need to look at my notes if I haven't used the card for a while.

  4. I like this idea and I'm going to steal this for my own system. =P

I already had poisons with different potency (some last longer, some deal more damage etc.), but some other effects are a great idea. Beside anti heal, maybe also disabling spells, lowering movement speed, or disabling activated abilities?

Ooof, reading that you won't use Felix physically hurts me xD He was one of the team carriers on my Maddening BL playthrough, without him I don't know if I would've made it through some of those maps.

Yep, I know he's strong, and I'm handicapping myself by not using him. I hope my planning of every little detail together with recruiting characters like Ferdinand and Bernadetta will help make things better. I hope I'm smart enough to pull it off but look forward to the challenge.

  6. I was thinking doing my one-class only runs was getting too easy on hard mode, with 70k+ renown to spend. Figured I should do a one-class run on maddening... using Mortal Savant class line as only classes... on Edelgard's path... I couldn't get through chapter 16 and gave up (practically all my units got one-shotted and doubled by almost everything).

Currently doing a dark knight classpath only run to get to know Hapi better, after that I'm going serious mode and try maddening without NG+, currently still working out every little detail in advance. Going Blue Lions since I hear it is easiest (still not using Felix and Sylvain since I don't like them, making the challenge a bit harder).

  7. Reading through this thread I started to realize what I find important in a Fire Emblem game:

    - Basic FE gameplay
I love the basics of the gameplay of FE, each FE has this which means I pretty much enjoy playing every FE. Points to both.

    - Replay-ability
Playing with characters in new classes, new teams, new modes, difficulties, self-inflicted challenges, so far only SoV was pretty bad in this point and I still love that game. I'd give a slight edge to 3H but really both get full points here.

    - Story
While 3H definitely had its flaws, it has some great moments that I love, and many mysteries that kept me hooked. Edelgard's story less so since I really couldn't find myself in her reasons, but the other paths made up for it. Same as Edelgard I felt for Corrin in Conquest, except it made less sense to me. Points for 3H.

    - Worldbuilding
Maybe if I had any interest in Japanese culture I would be able to rate Conquest any higher, but as it stands, any worldbuilding Conquest may have done is completely forgettable. 3H doesn't have as much as I would've liked either, but it's still kilometers ahead of Fates. Points for Tellius 3H.

    - Characters
I've been thinking a lot on this, and I think a huge part of why I keep replaying FE endlessly, is because I don't want to say goodbye to my  favorite characters. Playing a FE game is like visiting old friends again. And fact is, I don't find any Fates characters the slightest bit interesting. Whether that is because of them being too bland or to one-dimensional, I don't know, it's just how it is. 3H on the other hand, it is now the game with the most of my favorite characters. Huge point for 3H.

Add to this how hard I cringe at the fanservice of Fates, and the winner couldn't be more clear to me.

That said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And tbh if gameplay and game speed are your main focus in an FE game, or if you really like Japanese culture, I totally understand picking Conquest over 3H.

  8. Reminds me of their base conversation:

    Stefan
In the desert, I watched the dance of your sword. You have a unique style, but it is incomplete, filled with hesitation. You have recently lost your teacher, no?
    Ike
    Ah...
    Stefan
Luckily, your foundation is quite strong. Which is why I can be of service. Your technique... How powerful will it be when perfected? I would like to know.

It clearly implies Stefan is a lot stronger than Ike at this point. Other than that, I don't believe a comparison is made again.

Quick question, where you on normal or hard? Just wondering because no staves for the entire run seems overkill, but yeah that would be satisfying.

Hard. Thing is, in most Fire Emblem games, it's smarter to make a small team. Small teams mean your units become overleveled. If your units are the slightest bit evasive, at some point they will just not get hit, or receive very little damage. And if your HP ever does get low, this happens so infrequently that you have plenty of elixers laying around.

Early game becomes tougher though. Before you're overleveled, vulneraries and meatshield Jagens are your best friend. And FE8 luckily doesn't have this problem, but plenty of FE's where I run out of weapons before the first shop (since I'm not using half the weapons supplied with my small teams)

Honestly, this run would be so much easier if I used the lords, but where is the fun in that?

Seeing the trainees stumble across the battlefield and destroying the demon king while tripping over their own feet was plenty of fun to me =P

(I love runs like that, watching 3H Byleth punch the church route final boss to death with his bare fists is my number one fun situation run.)

  11. I did a super trainee +lords run once, that was actually quite easy. Not using lords in such small teams seems like torture, have fun.

(I did however keep everyone alive, Artur dying for you just breaks my heart, poor Lute.)

  12. - Have at least 2 dedicated staffbots, give them restore staves
    - Despite their horrible hit rate, axes can be worth it due to the later spamming of enemy lances. I'd suggest paladins or Dieck (I'd say heroes but the other 2 options aren't all that great).
    - Lilina isn't as bad as people say, she isn't great, just not that bad. Her high magic makes her a very effective healer in late game too.
    - Find a source that tells when and where reinforcements happen, enemies that spawn and immediately move are really annoying.

Edit: Oh wait this thread is about units not general advice. Euh, I'd use my favorite units. So that's Fir, Bartre and ehmm, whatever 8 other units I feel like?

I honestly did not know longbows existed in Three Houses, and I'm almost done my first playthrough (Crimson Flower). Where can I find one?

You get a Longbow for free from Sylvain's paralogue. Otherwise it must be forged from a steel bow using 6 wootz steel, a very precious resource since it is also used for brave weapons and only drops from monsters.

  14. There are a lot of reasons why I dislike Revelations, but none of them is the reason why I thought I would dislike a golden route in  3H.

I thought I would dislike a 3H golden route because finding a path where everyone lives makes the other paths feel dumb for not finding that solution. But in Revelations, this path split is because of the decision you make. You, the player, are the reason. Your dumb choice made people die in other paths, making another choice when picking a house could be the point where we save everyone.

Making a similar choice as Corrin, not choosing at all. Choose to be a knight instead of a teacher. The three house leaders have made it a point that they want to learn from you, but by not being part of one particular house, the three lords would compete for your attention on equal ground. This would subsequently mean the house leaders get to know each other a lot better during part 1. Claude and Dimitri could convince Edelgard that change can come without large spread war. Claude and Edelgard can convince Dimitri that change is truly needed. (Only factor I haven't figured out yet is Rhea, if she's still an enemy then no way Catherine would join you.)

I've changed my mind, a golden path could be possible and if done right I wouldn't hate it.

  15. Okay, let me start by saying, I'm probably not as smart as some people here, and English is not my first language which means I might have misunderstood certain aspects. If my point makes no sense whatsoever please let me know in a respectful manner.

I've always seen Fire Emblem gameplay as chess with a luck element. As chess itself has no luck element, and I often consider it as the ultimate game of strategy. Chess is a game where all information is always visible, no hidden traps or other secrets. Each player knows what each piece is capable of. The reason I'm bad at chess is because I don't have the insight to keep track of every piece, and can't hold all that information of every possibility to think more than a few turns ahead.

So then do memory and insight make the full package for what you can call "strategy"? I personally don't think so.

My dad always tells me I would be a lot better at chess if I were to play it more often, he wasn't a good player when he started either. Playing more often means you know the "strategies" others can employ to win, and how to respond to them. You don't have to know all possible moves, only the moves that matter. Does this information about moves not make a player better? Does this information not make one a better strategist?

Calling Fire Emblem a complete 100% strategy game sounds foolish, but this does not mean that strategy isn't a large part of the game.

You know what, after typing all this out for myself, I'm not even sure I know what strategy means anymore, can someone spell this out for me?

  16. Weapon triangle is something I have  struggled with a lot for my Fire Emblem Dungeons and Dragons system. In the first version I gave a flat +3 hit/avoid (both roll a d20 and add value, highest value gives result) and +1 damage on advantage, which made for a large impact earlygame but was practically ignored in the lategame. I changed it into a system where weapon rank decided the height of the bonus, but it was too much to remember and became a mess.

Right now I'm using the actual DnD rules of advantage for the weapon triangle. whoever has the advantage gets to roll 2 d20 and use the roll that suits them best. Maybe someone who is better at math can tell what this actually means in %, but I find it works well in keeping the triangle important throughout the game.
