  1. Allright, let's try this.

    Spoiler

Marth - Power of friendship is so cheesy but I kinda like it.
Alm - His bad jokes were everything.
Celica - We need more magic lords.
Roy - More of a tactician than a fighter, still hoping they will show that off more in gameplay in the remake.
Lyn - Not born into royalty, well technically she is, but also not really?
Eliwood - Ok I'll admit, I liked him during Lyn's story, being the hero to save Ninian, all around good guy (gets boring later on in his story though he needed more at that point).
Hector - Using axes, armor on promotion, I like how his build is different.
Eirika - Euh, female lord yay? idk
Ephraim - Lance, meaning being different, also using very risky tactics was interesting.
Ike - Knowing nothing of the world as a main character really helps getting involved in it as a player, also I really like people who follow their heart and do the right thing even though it's frowned upon.
Micaiah - Magic lord, also I actually don't mind her special power since they also gave it a drawback.
Chrom - Yeah I got nothing
Corrin - Being a manakete actually could've been cool, had it actually looked like a dragon, or anything not as weird as that thing.
Byleth - Not that I really minded the blank slate approach, but yeah I got nothing.
Claude - His white hat schemes, some people don't like that he doesn't actually get into the grey areas more but I like him sticking to the good side. Also bowlord.
Dimitri - His backstory being a mystery that is slowly, step by step, revealed. Also lancelord.
Edelgard - Axelord. I like her as a villain, but playing as the villain doesn't do it for me.

So, a heroic type with an ucommon unit build, making a bunch of jokes, being more of a talker than a fighter, and a mystery backstory... Ok now it sounds a little boring putting it all together. XD

  2. I actually like the idea of earning renown from how well you play the game, and then being able to spend that renown for improvements. Stuff like supports and weapon ranks as in 3H, but maybe even character stats, weapon stats and growth rates. What and how depends on the balance of the game, but making players decide their own difficulty is something I'm all for.

If they decide to not bring combat arts back the way they worked in 3H, I would be all for maybe making certain weapons unbreakable in new game +. Or at least give them higher amounts of uses.

Ah, jeez.  Reminds me of the time I did a Auto-only run of Awakening Hard-mode.  So much death... so much suffering... ... and the horrible parings, too...

Oh right, lately games have auto play I use for this challenge. It's the older games where I have to make up the AI myself. Not sure if maybe it's more interesting if you can write simple AI (on paper, not inside the actual game code) per character at the start of each chapter, might make it somewhat possible to try on maddening?

  4. Oh challenge runs, nice! I do a lot of challenge runs, though I do them on hard because I'm not smart enough for maddening.

I've done a whole bunch of 1-classline-only runs, so much I've grown tired of them by now. Though particularly my Magitri (magic Dimitri in mages only), Puncher Hanneman (war master line only), Bow Knight only and Pegasi only runs were a lot of fun too.

One of the first challenges I always give myself for a second playthrough when a new game comes out, is the AI only run. Only for the avatar (or lord for games without avatar) you can choose movement, all your other units must simply walk towards the enemy they can deal most damage, and do just that. This was pretty easy on normal mode, except for Caspar's chapter, where I sort of cheated by giving Caspar no weapons. Might try again in hard mode, but this one obviously requires little strategy and more luck.

My current playthrough is one where I picked 8 of my favorite characters with the highest growth in a single stat, I picked the class path with the highest growth and have to give all of the corresponding stat boosters to the unit training that stat. Let's see how high I can get those stats. Fairly easy so far for hard mode.

Some great idea's in this thread actually, I'd love to try the chess idea, with actually only making characters move the same way their class does. And I still need to do another support run, might as well use the good teacher idea there, I wonder what class the death knight wants to be. =P

  5. I usually like to replay games a couple dozen times, I think that's one of the reasons I like FE so much. I like using different characters each time I play, which makes multiple lords, multiple forced spots, a negative in my book. That's why I like Ike and Roy in Path of Radiance and Sword of Seals respectively the most.

Not saying it can't be done well, I never really had anything against Micaiah/Ike in RD, or Alm/Celica in Echoes. The switching teams aspect seems to help in keeping things fresh.

On the other hand there's Blazing Sword, where Lyn and Hector might as well be forced each chapter. Having the same 3 units again and again on each replay was really annoying to me. At least the 3 lords in Three Houses take turns in playthroughs. Plus Three Houses allows for many different builds for the lords, so it doesn't feel so samey each time, which is why forced avatars bothers me less from a gameplay perspective. (Though let's not get into the story perspective for that one.)

  6. I heard the time of day you measured yourself actually has a small effect on your length. Could be getting it mixed up with weight though, I know timing matters with weight.

See if you can measure yourself at different times during the day, or night, or maybe check for seasonal effects, sounds like that could be interesting.

  7. The old system felt special to me, all other games use systems similar to 3H as well. There might be a reason for that (like limiting overleveling for balance's sake), but it makes 3H a bit less special. I would like it better if they went back to the 100 exp bars, but wouldn't be too sour if they decide not to.

That said they could even work with percentage bars. In the code it would still work with exp points like 3H, but for looks and feels it would show 0-100 for how far you are for the next level. Just popped into my head, could be interesting, no clue if it'd work.

  8. It's certainly a fun game and worth getting. But the DLC is too expensive to be worth it, after all these years I'm still hoping for a sale or something that discounts it. Doesn't sound worth the money. Amiibo don't really add much at all in this game.

IMO, the story and maps are the worst parts of this game. But the characters and (certain parts of the) gameplay are great so it evens out. If you get this game purely as a strategy game you will be disappointed, if you get this game because you want characters you'll absolutely love then this is the game for you.

  9. In my Experience, Ingrid is a great dancer, but you'll really miss out in combat for her. I'd recommend Annette as a dancer, her magic is still strong enough to make her a great combat unit, and she actually enjoys the role storywise. She doesn't make the best dodge-tank, so the sword avoid would be wasted a bit, but you'll have an even better dodge-tank in Ingrid this way.

On that note, you could also just give sword avoid to Felix or Ingrid and not class change them to dancer. Dancers are really strong, but so is an Assassin or Falcon Knight with sword avoid.

(I have no experience with Ashe as a dancer, but that only seems worth it if he's your weakest unit and you only need someone for dancing, but then Flayn might be a better option.)

For the sake of a unique contribution, Byleth starting with a spell in order to develop Reason without having to spend activity points with faculty training. Would make out of house recruiting easier, although building supports is still the easier way to go.

Yes, this! Or actually, I'd probably prefer Byleth to start with E+ in Faith, keep E in Reason, but make E+ in reason give a spell, because only gaining Reason Proficiency on E+ is worthless. "Hey I got better with casting magic, Now if only I actually knew a spell"  (I should start saying that irl, "Yeah I'm great at casting magic, I just don't know any spells")

Was there something that she didn't explain or explain well? I do recall her mentioning that her goal is to unify Fodlan under the Empire's banner and eliminate the crest system basically. Her waging war was her way to do so and admits that her method for achieving peace is contradictory. Claude mentions wanting to unite Fodlan as well but lamenting that Edelgard's method requires too much bloodshed and that it's a bad direction as a whole. Then again I only played Crimson Flower once and I do plan on revisiting that route at some point.

Her goal is very clear, it's mostly some of her early game decisions that could use some explaining (like why she tasked the bandits to attack her group before the prologue). And it's not really clear how much she knew at certain points. For the first few routes this was cool, because the missing pieces kept me motivated to play the other routes. It's just a bit sad that after playing all routes I'm still left guessing about certain points.

  12. 4 minutes ago, Barren said:

Remember that one of the Knight NPCs on chapter 12 (non Crimson Flower route) mentions that she was planning to do this from the start.

We even get to see her talk with the bandit that attacked in the prologue, saying she sent him to do this. I don't think it was ever explained why, unless we're to asume she knew Byleth was in that village and wanted to recruit him? Doubt it was an assassination attempt on the other house leaders. Don't think there's any chapter before the timeskip Edelgard did not have at least a hand in. Oh except for the Remire Calamity, I believe her when she said she would have tried to stop them if she knew.

To get back on topic, does explaining the plot a bit better at some point count as a minor change? Like have Edelgard explain everything she did like a classic villain or something?

  13. 31 minutes ago, RainbowMoon said:

Edelgard could potentially get him to stand down and gain his support as a Kingdom lord

Doesn't this kind of go against certain things happening in the background? Could be some things that were only implied or maybe I'm reading to much into certain things, but...

    Spoiler

Since Edelgard knows about most of the plans of twsitd, her being the flame emperor and all, she'd know Lonato dying is part of their plan. She wouldn't so obviously go against their plans as to save Lonato, no matter how she feels about his ideals. The Lonato uprising was mostly to make the assassination note less conspicuous, I'm not even sure Lonato knew about the note? I think Lonato surviving would mess up a lot of their plans, meaning character-wise Edelgard wouldn't save him, and story-wise Ashe couldn't save him unless they split the game into 2 paths from here. Might just be me though.

  14. Different animations for each combat art, or at least for the special combat arts.
    ...
Okay that's not really small I guess

I'll go for a Quick menu for explore. When you'd choose Explore you can choose to have a menu instead of loading the entire monastery. From this menu you can select your activities rather than running around. (Obviously not everything is available here, like picking up lost items, but who even does the lost items stuff after the first playthrough.)

  15. I'm happily surprised I'm not the only one here that dislikes profanities. Many people I know have told me they're just normal now and I should get used to them, but I will actively avoid people who curse a lot.

Other than that, not really. Some words make me uncomfortable, some I don't like being called, but no words besides curses I hate.

Regarding the mastered ability, I was trying to make a unique ability that would make the vanguard unit benefit from being in the thick of the fight; make them specialize in being the first one out there, surrounded by enemy units and all that stuff since, well, it is in the name Vanguard. I didn't realize that it would promote the unit being alone rather than in a group; perhaps there's a way to rework it so the unit gets stronger from being in the thick of the fight without it mattering if they're alone or have allies nearby. Perhaps instead they're stronger for every enemy unit for which they're within attacking range?

Hmm, fair. a vanguard skill should incentivise the unit actually being a vanguard. Maybe something along the lines of "For each enemy within attacking range range, protection +2 and damage dealt -2", That way you incentivise the unit being thrown into the fight head first, but can't expect them to finish it by themselves.

Interesting, though I'm not sure if that description fits what most people think of when they hear "inquisitor".

Yeah it was tough picking a name for this one, eventually went with the unit of the same name in Heroes of Might and Magic, which is basically a promoted priest with a hammer.

    21 hours ago, vanguard333 said:

What does it mean by "White Magic Range -1/+1"? Is that a typo?

Nope, I explained it after that. It's [minimum range/maximum range] which means for a spell with minimum range 1 and maximum range 1, range becomes 0-2. 0 Range in this case means it can target itself.

    21 hours ago, vanguard333 said:

Interesting. Does the summoner gain exp if a summoned or controlled beast fights an opponent, or do they only gain exp from direct combat? If the latter, that might dis-incentivize summoning for the player.

I'd say make it like in FE8, the act of summoning grants XP.

    21 hours ago, vanguard333 said:

By the way, what did you think of my idea (vanguard)?

You pretty much made what I wanted to make, except I wouldn't take Ike's lord outfit, but actually take his Vanguard outfit as a main inspiration (even though I like his lord outfit the most). And I'm not too fond of his mastered ability, don't actually think it needs one as the combat art is strong enough. But if you want to give it one, maybe go for something promoting teamwork over a skill that promotes throwing the unit in alone, like maybe it makes linked attacks deal +2 damage or something. Maybe call it Radiant Leadership as a fun nod.

  18. Okay sure, I resisted posting here long enough.

    Inquisitor

Protector of the weak, fighting on the frontlines

Suggested Ranks: Faith S, Axes B+, Armor A (is armored)

Bases: high HP, DEF and reasonable RES

Class abilities: White Magic uses x2, Weight -5 , White Magic Range -1/+1 (Not just for attack magic, so yes, heal spell becomes range 0-2 meaning you can heal yourself too)

Mastery Skill: Guard (You and adjacent allies receive 2 damage less from all sources)

    Whisper

Like a whisper in the wind, you won't hear your death coming.

Suggested Ranks: Sword S, Bow S, Flying C+ (is not actually flying)

    Bases: High SPD and DEX

Class Abilities: Steal+ (includes locktouch), Pass, Stillness (so long as an enemy can attack another ally, they cannot attack this unit)

Mastery Skill: Backstab (After combat, if your opponent survived, deal 5 irreducable damage)

    Summoner

A powerfull magic wielder that can summon monsters.

Suggested Ranks: Reason S+, Authority B+ (or be Hapi)

    Bases: High Magic

Class abilities: Black&Dark Magic damage +5, Rescue (grants spell or uses x2), Summon (summons a demonic beast to the battlefield, it is not allied to any group, gives no experience or items)

Mastery Skill: Control (Brings a demonic beast without shields to your side, story and boss monsters are obviously immune, only 1 at a time.)

  19. I'm sorry if this is not the right place to ask, but I've been following this topic and the Bush vs Trump discussion is making me wonder. I've been following a bit of American politics since Obama, so don't really know a lot about Bush.

Did Bush ever discredit certain news stations like trump did? Did Bush ever dismiss science as opinion like Trump did? Did Bush ever undermine democracy like Trump did?

This is my opinion, I know, but if the answer to these questions is no, then I believe Trump to be far worse than Bush. There's no telling how Bush would have handled the pandemic, or how Trump would have handled the situation Bush was in. But what Trump did was actively poisoning the minds of his followers, both inside the USA and outside. I think that deserves to be mentioned.

  20. Oh interesting topic. Like many said before, I also wouldn't cut anyone, but let's see.

(Chronological order, in a spoiler tag because I plan to go all out.)

    Spoiler

In chapter one we get quite the team Roy as our swordsman main unit can obviously not be dropped. Wolt is framed as his best friend, and while underused in the story, I think deserves his spot. I'm not a fan of Jeigans myself, but Marcus also has a big enough role not to drop. That leaves Bors, Lance and Alen who all seem expendable to me. But having Roy have no knights with him also leaves something missing, and at least one cavalier would be nice to have. I'll write down Lance and Bors as possible sacrifices, since Alen seems to add more personality to me.

In chapter 2 we have our first healer leading us to plot. Ellen can't be scrapped completely in my eyes, and I really like her, but if she were a green unit that left after chapter 3, that'd be understandable, since Clarine joins there. (her AI would need to be written well though) As others have said just having one of Wade or Lott is plenty for early axes, and they both kind of add the same to the story. Dieck and Thany can't be scrapped imo. Let's say Wade and Ellen are possible sacrifices. (and I actually like the Merlinus idea, though it could be improved upon.)

For chapter 3 and 4, Chad and Lugh introduce necessary new gameplay mechanics, and the Rutger and Clarine story is too much fun to scrap, they're keepers.

Chapter 6, the role of the church comes in with Saul, which makes him a keeper. He can't be traveling without a bodyguard now can he? Dorothy stays (maybe I'm biased because I like her too much). However, 2 archers in 1 chapter? Better make Dorothy a soldier class or something, because we can't scrap Sue, she has too much potential importance to the story.

Then Zealot, Treck and Noah come in with chapter 7. Do we really need this many cavaliers? It pains my heart to say this, because I recently read his supports and noticed what a great character he was, but yes, Treck can easily be scrapped here.

Chapter 8, oh boy. I never really got the point of Astohl, except that they suddenly hit you in the face with massive amounts of chests. If they chapters weren't designed around having 2 thieves here, you really wouldn't need a second thief. Let's sacrifice him. Then the knight squad rolls in, and yes, Wendy is terrible as a unit, but I just love her being a female knight. scrapping Oujay would mean we possibly only have 1 mercenary, which would be sad. Plus having Wendy come in alone seems like a bad idea.... Oh right, Barthe was there, yeah no, he can be scrapped. (and make Douglas part of the knight triangle attack if we want to keep that) Also, Lilina is Lilina, give her more story importance while we're at it.

So what's the point of Shin? Fir can carry the plot this chapter, no need for Shin, I'll gladly sacrifice him.

Not going to give many words to this, I believe Gonzales, Geese, Klein and Tate add enough to stay.

As for the Lalum vs Ellfin debate, I personally prefer Lalum as a playable character, and Ellfin just as a plot device where needed, but it really doesn't matter much, one can go to the npc corner.

Bartre/Echidna are fine, keep them, no big opinion on them.

Cath! Yes keep her! Except make thieves gain exp from opening chests and make them promote and stuff, make her a bit of an Est archetype too, I just like her okay.

    Raigh is cool, keeper.

Milady, Percival, Cecilia, all keepers, no question about that.

Sophia, I just like the challenge she gives, I'm just going to say keeper (even though, objectively, yeah she could be cut).

Igrene and Garret, sure cut them, I don't think either will be missed, they don't add enough to not make this list.

Don't even want to mention Fae, I mean, come on.

Hugh, I guess we could use another mage at this point, but his story really doesn't add anything to the game. drop. Zeiss adds a little, and more wyverns is good. If they were to make Gale recruitable though, dropping Zeiss would be a small price to pay.

Douglas, Niime, Yodel, Juno, they all add plenty, keepers.

Dayan and Karel, not so sure about these guys, let's see how far we get to 10 without them.

Okay, now let's see who that leaves

    1) Lance
    2) Bors
    3) Wade
    4) Ellen
    5) Treck
    6) Astohl
    7) Barthe
    8 ) Shin
    9) Elffin
    10) Igrene
    11) Garret
    12) Hugh

Oh that's 12, okay sure Bors and Hugh can stay since they fill the biggest gameplay roles.

  21. It adds character. The better the animations, the easier it is to think of these pixels as people. The animations really add to the emotional experience imo.

(Not that I had any problem becoming emotionally invested in GBA pixels, but it helps.)

Though yes, after some time they do get repetitive, but promotes help with that, giving new animations and such.

Yeah but Gaiden/Echoes doesn't have staves, so no staffbots.

    Checkmate, Duma Faithful.

Cleric animations in Echoes use a staff, take your chess pieces elsewhere you Mila worshipper. =P

But if Echoes and Three Houses don't count, I guess Clarine gets the prize for me. In FE6 healers are absolutely necessary, and Clarine gets a horse. (Though I personally still prefer Ellen.)
