  1. Every character in the game is a cliche, even the ones you say aren't. Nyx, as the above poster said, is the legal loli, the one who looks like a little girl but totally isn't so people don't feel bad about waifuing her; Soleil is a particular type of trope in Japan, the girl who fetishes other girls as a phase before moving on to men as is proper (JAPAN'S DEFINITION, NOT MINE)l Mozu is the orphan, a character who loses their home in a monster attack, gets sucked into an army, and becomes part of something greater, usually the hero of a story, but not always; Kagero is the loyal servant, normally a maid, who has served her master for years. Etc.

(Nitpicky, but it was Corrin/Azura's REV supports where the bath thing happened, not CQ. And I definitely didn't get a "mother soothing her baby" vibe from the dragon scene. It was a classic "maiden calms the beast" literary scene. "Mother soothing the baby" is most of Camilla's stuff)

Now, just because they fall into a cliche/trope category doesn't make them bad, because nothing is truly original--everything draws inspiration from something else. It's only if they don't have a rounded personality, but are defined by that trope, that is bad. And that's where I disagree with most of your list--a lot of the girls you called cliche are pretty fleshed-out, while some of the ones (cough Soleil cough) you said aren't cliche, are flat and one-note.

  2. You can see some influences of this in Birthright and Revelations with the (once again poorly executed) traitor mystery.

I'm hesitant to blame Kibiyashi because it seems like he was barely involved with the writing. If he gave the general framework of the story, it was up to IS to refine and develop those ideas into a strong plot. The biggest problems seem to be rooted in "Kamui must be a morally flawless Mary Sue" and "We gotta find a way to sell Revelation", which I doubt Kibiyashi played a part in.

I'm gonna disagree with the "Corrin is a Mary Sue" aspect, or at least that it's the root of the game's problems. The real root of the problem lies with Garon and the writer's inability to make him anything other than a one-dimensional villain. Make him more similar to Lyon and Travant, and suddenly all the problems with the game's morality and (especially) Conquest disappear.

  3. 1.If Gunter can commit Seppuku and survive after healing then what's the point of having Ryoma's dramatic death scene, I get that he stroke himself with lightning but it was not what killed him because death by lightning kills you immediatly since the brain gets blown up. I mean if they faked Hinoka's death, they can fake his as well by having Xander take the body.

I assume Gunter survived because there were healers on standby, while Ryoma was in the same room as Garon, so Corrin couldn't send healers to him, so he bled out.

    2. Anankos what's to kill everyone right ? Destroy all kingdoms then in this case why not summon Zombie Mikoto and Sumeragi to the real world to team up with Ganon Garon.

+ Why bring Takumi so late in Conquest's ending if Anankos wants to get the job the done he could simply do that.

Because it would unite the kingdoms against him. He really wants to manipulate them into fighting each other.

    3. The Rainbow Sage said Yato needs to react to the power of the legendary weapons, It's suppose to emphasise on their bond as brothers by their bond I mean the one that Xander,Corrin, Ryoma Blond Marth Leo and Takumi but in the fight Corrin just says he wants more power then all the weapons get out of nowhere and create Omega Yato. The way they executed it in Conquest was great as Leo and Corrin had a brotherly moment and Xander defending Corrin and make this epic speech about the real Garon was a good brotherly moment as well. Couldn't we simply have them unite by having Corrin get blown that and get supported by his brothers.

Yeah, no, this was just laziness on the devs parts.

    4. Alright so that's more personal but it's regarding the after-battle against Anankos. Corrin becomes the Wise King of Valla, he told Azura that she was supposed to be Queen but Corrin beating Anankos is the reason why he deserves to be King more than her.

That's cool and all but what if you are like me and you married Azura for Revelations ? She is the Queen of Valla and has the same role has Corrin so why this conversation.

    1) Dev laziness in not changing plot dialogue, and 2) It's possible their roles will be different, ie Corrin will be the one doing the public speaking while she does the behind-the-scenes paperwork, hence why he asks her if she's still fine with that since he'll be getting all the credit.

    5. If Corrin worked for making Valla a better place with Hoshido and Nohr's help, how did they do that ? Did they drop the ressources from the Great Canyon ? In this case does that mean everyone knows of Valla ? This makes no sense to be honest.

He says in his speech that Hoshido and Nohr gave land to make a new Valla, so it's somewhere on the surface.

    6. I know it's told in Dlcs but couldn't they have Anankos reveal his identity as Corrin's father however have the nice Anankos talk to him when Corrin is about to kill him or something " he somehow reached his heart and hears a Thank you son ".

The good Anankos has been completely absorbed by the evil one, I believe.

    7. Silas is still Corrin's best friend, why didn't he join Valla's army ?

Because the epilogues are lazily-written generic pieces of crap.

    8. Everyone in Valla was an Anankos pawn, how could there possibly be any remaining survivors that aren't zombies.

Some may have escaped and fled to the surface during the first destruction, while others may have been taken as slaves to keep the army's equipment in order. That's the reasoning I used for my fic, anyway. Anthony at least was completely human and not a zombie, so there were at least some humans in Valla.

9.What's the point of keeping Gunter alive if it's for disapearing out of nowhere. Couldn't he sacrifice himself for Corrin and join his wife and child..

I assume it's supposed to be a character arc, but it's sloppily written.

    10. Why isn't that it's only now that Garon comes out of nowhere to get eaten by Anankos, they had all those scenes where the Hoshidan Royal Family cried for Mikoto and Sumeragi, at least have the Nohrian Scums Royal Family have their emotional moment, maybe near the moment he was about to die have us see Garon's original face before becoming a pawn of Anankos {Leo said he used to be very nice and also handsome with a lot of ladies at his back}. It would have been great to see Garon's ugly face crack into the handsome man he used to be before getting eaten like dragon treat.

    Dev laziness.

  4. Went on a quick reread of what I missed and omfg thank you for drawing this. I've been looking for art of Nohr Noble MCorrin. I really prefer it on the male version, because it's basically "my aesthetic" but the FCorrin version is a bit too open in parts. So when I can, I usually make MCorrin (or MKana) one.

    Nicely done image.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it! I love the male Nohr Noble armor too, and the lack of fanart about it is pretty depressing.

    And now, fanart time:

  5. I didn't know about the Nyx one, but I do know that he's nothing if not respectful to royalty. It's everyone else he's usually a jackass to. XD

In a more negative way, one could interpret it as him being nice to Corrin's closest friends/relative as a way to suck up to the boss :P

  6. corrin/azura rev is probably the worst i've seen

"nohr is warlike and attacks hoshido which is a perfect country that does no wrong"

"well it's understandable that nohr would be terrible because hoshido is so perfect"

"let us consider our nohrian allies, which at the moment are gunter gunter and gunter"

it's also hilariously hard to miss because you have like, four good units in the earlygame and azura is among them

    And Felicia/Jakob.

But you're misconstruing the support. It was intended to show that Hoshido's indifference to Nohr's issues played a part in starting the war. An attempt at moral grayness that should have been in the plot itself, but better than nothing.

  7. M!Corrin/Hana - All my problems with Fates rolled into one support (Royal bias, Azura/Corrin push), which is a damn shame, because Hana is my number one favourite character in the entire Fates cast.

Still doesn't stop me from marrying her to male Corrin, though, if only to spite IS, who clearly didn't want M!Corrin/Hana to be a thing or Hana to be a fan favourite. The reason for that is anyone's guess, but I think it says something that Hana went from 'second coming of Mia' before the games' release to 'victim blaming bitch' among fans.

Wait, how does M!Corrin/Hana have a royal bias or an Azurrin push? I don't see either of those in it. The only royal even mentioned is Sakura, which is a given since Hana's her retainer.

  8. Hmm... I'm not really seeing anything, though in fairness, I'm only opening up topics that look like f!Corrin's waifu status could actually be relevant and I stopped clicking through after about 12 pages of topics. Like... there are other things I can see from the titles (GFAQs sure likes talking about pairings, waifus, and Camilla), but even the potentially gross 'is Corrin alpha/beta/omega' was surprisingly tame thank god (and mostly he pronouns to boot) and 'Me and Corrin are pretty hot together' is actually about m!Corrin.

Maybe it's buried in the bowels of GFAQs, I guess? At first glance, there doesn't seem to be a large male fanbase seriously claiming f!Corrin as their waifu.

It's in the archives. I hang out there, and I remember seeing a lot of "F!Corrin's totally hot so she's better" comments. Search for stuff about her vs M!Corrin and you should find it.

  9. Azama/Sakura. Bullying a woman until she cries is not okay, and I can't buy it turning romantic at all.

Soleil/Ophelia. Sexual harassment is definitely not okay.

M!Corrin/Hana is (as you already said) terrible. Being mad at him or distrusting him for being Nohrian I'd be fine with, but because he got kidnapped? Blaming him for something he couldn't control? Is a shitty thing to do.

Peri/most people, but especially M!Corrin and Keaton. She makes Keaton regress as a character and say "I guess killing humans is okay", and M!Corrin is so horribly out-of-character it's not funny. Yeah, sure, he's going to be okay with her killing people. As much as I despise her S-support with Kaden, I'd still put it above those two because at least he doesn't suffer for it.

  10. Also the top five doesn't necessarily mean what my "best written" top five are, just my favorites. I also really am growing fond of M!Corrin x Azura. I may have mine paired up with Oboro but I'm slowly opening up to the Hell of Azurrin I guess.

    Yes, embrace the dark.

I'll try to limit mine to the top ten, otherwise I'd go on for a really long time. So, in no particular order:

    Romantic:

    M!Corrin/Azura (any route)

    Ryoma/Elise

    Leo/Sakura

    Xander/Nyx

Laslow/any female (What? It's not cheating, he's really just that good)

    Niles/Camilla

    Odin/Orochi

    Takumi/Oboro

    Azama/Effie

    Benny/Charlotte

    Platonic:

Azura/any of her sisters (Also not cheating, they're all good)

    Laslow/Xander

    Laslow/Odin

    Odin/Leo

    Leo/Niles

    Leo/Xander

    M!Corrin/Fuga

    M!Corrin/Shura

    M!Corrin/Xander

    M!Corrin/Leo

M!Corrin's Hoshidan brothers sadly don't really hold up to his Nohrian ones. I guess because he's getting to know them, while he's known his Nohrian brothers for a while, so the supports can explore their existing dynamic instead of establishing one.

  11. She's popular with the guys simply because she's good-looking. And with the female players tend to play as female Corrin.

You know why F!CorrinxLeo is a popular pairing? It's not because they think it's a good pairing (it's a pretty bad one actually) or because they F!Corrin and Leo have good chemistry (they don't), the reason why it's popular it's because the female players ship themselves with Leo, not F!Corrin.

It's the same thing with F!RobinxChrom.

    Agreed x 10.

It's come up before, but it's pure wish-fulfillment; wanting to have a 'relationship' with the angsty, sensitive and troubled guy without going through all the things that in real-life would make such a relationship difficult to handle. Notice how in many fanfics, Takumi and Leo's complex issues, faults and insecurities are reduced to generic anime-angst so that F!Corrin can heal them with the power of her 'inspirational' words and/or sexy times?

    Agreed x 10.

Unless you're reading fanfiction, in which case F!Corrin is either a generic moe-blob or a one-note character who exists solely to help Leo or Takumi get over their angst.

    Agreed x 10.

Seriously, the overall preference for Fem!Corrin seems to be "she's hot" (in Smash and sometimes Fates) or "wish fulfilment" (in Fates). I'm not saying those are the only reasons for her popularity, but they have a pretty good chunk in it. Too many fanarts and fanfics ignore her canon personality and reduce her to Generic (but totally speshul) Moe Blob Princess #3, while amping up how ~sexy~ and ~hot~ she is, for the purposes of healing Poor Prince Leo/Takumi without getting anything out of the deal or actually analyzing how hard it would be to deal with someone with their issues. It's infuriating and it's honestly just sealed my preference for M!Corrin, even though I myself am female.

Which is ironic, since it's actually F!Corrin that comes off as generic hero.

Just compare the times M!Corrin and F!Corrin have different quotes.

M!Corrin comes off as shy and awkward, where F!Corrin comes off as pushy and headstrong.

Even their main-game dialogue, while shared, has a part in this. Corrin's got a kind, naive, and overall "soft" personality that you see everywhere for female princesses in the media, so Fem!Corrin seems run-of-the-mill. But that same non-macho personality is pretty rare in media males, so it ends up making M!Corrin seem more unique and interesting. It's another reason I prefer him over her.

  12. Hinoka. I literally forgot about her in Revelation despite playing Birthright AND Conquest beforehand. The plot just drops her until Ryoma's return from Cheve. I mean, yeah, it's justified because she was a late addition and Kagero was originally the sister, but every other royal gets SOMETHING. Even the other females, who get left out a lot, have more than her: Azura has her song plot in Birthright and her mom in Revelation, Elise has That Moment in Birthright, Camilla has her pursuit of Corrin in Birthright and Revelation, and Sakura has Fort Jinya in all routes. Hinoka's personality is extremely understated and boring in her supports, too, at least to me, which just makes things worse.

Leaving Hinoka out? Ehhhh...Sakura. I feel bad about it since I actually do like her, but she has the second-least plot involvement and Shy Girl isn't as memorable a personality as the other royals.

Gameplay-wise, Leo. It's just...the other brothers are either a nuke or a mounted wall, Hinoka (for all she's screwed in the plot) and Camilla are great fliers, and the little sisters are pretty sweet once you get them trained up. And if we count Corrin and Azura, then Corrin's Corrin and Azura has refresher utility. Leo's just...what is his role? He's not as good a mage as Elise, not as good a swordsman as Xander, not as good a magic tank as Elise (again), not as good a mage-killer as Hinoka...and his personal weapon is pretty sad, too.

  13. Or he marries a Corrinsexual. Otherwise, Heirs of Fates never happened (though there's the whole crap of each kid being from a different world despite each kid within their respective faction acting like they're from the same world).

Besides the "different worlds" thing, there's also stuff like the kids being divided into factions. So, since Sophie and Dwyer never appear on the Birthright side and Fem!Kana never recognizes them, Silas and Jakob might never have gotten married in each Birthright world, which lets him marry Azura a first-gen.

Of course that's only if you consider Heirs of Fate canon, which I don't.

  14. Hmm... if going by support growths, male avatar's "canon" options are Azura, Felicia, Hinoka, Sakura, Camilla, and Elise. Of course, Felicia and especially Azura can be seen as having a significant lead due to story bias (Azura showing up in lots of story scenes as a fellow protagonist and Felicia having her share of lines and the fact that she sticks with the male avatar for much of the story).

I'm not sure how much stock I'd put into support growths this time. In Awakening it was an indication of ship bias, but here it just seems to imply characters have a close relationship among each other--(almost) all the royals have fast growth with their siblings and retainers, and I certainly wouldn't call something like Xander/Elise romantic.

Though then again it could still be seen as pushing Azura, since she's not Corrin's sibling or retainer yet still has a fast support growth

  15. Azura: Love her. She gets screwed over in the plot, but who doesn't? She has a fantastic design, good voice acting, lovely singing, refresher utility, fantastic supports and a great character, which more than makes up for it. Her loneliness and social anxiety issues are honestly something a lot of people can relate to, and she's one of the least gimmicky and most rounded characters in the game. Her relationship with her sisters and especially Corrin are too cute. 10/10.

Mozu: Another really good character. I don't find her very deep, but she is likeable, and sometimes you don't need deep. Survivor's guilt is a guilty pleasure of mine, and she's well-rounded. Design-wise I like the roses in her hair, but other than that it doesn't stand out. Her voice acting is fairly good (though I've heard her crit so many times I actually hate those lines now, haha) and she kills as a unit. 8/10.

Yukimura: I honestly couldn't have less of an opinion on him if I tried. Little personality, little story presence, and I don't recall ever using him in combat. What a waste of Paul Eiding. 0/10.

  16. But since Corrin was originally a fixed character and not a player avatar (well, probably), maybe Azura was created with the idea of being his love interest in mind?

I believe this is true, or at least heavily implied, in The Making of Fire Emblem, since everything about the Fates drafts has him drawn, set and referred to as a male, with no mention of female. So it would seem he was originally supposed to be a non-customizable lord like Marth (seriously, I will resent that change to Avatar forever, it's almost certainly what screwed over the rest of the plot), in which case Azura is the big candidate for main love interest. Heck, she still is.

  17. It's not that rare of an opinion, although I find that shipping 'culture' can be pretty toxic regardless of where you find it, it's just made worse by Tumblr's other flaws.

Yeah, I've noticed that F!Corrin x Azura is more common on Tumblr and Ao3 while M!Corrin x Azura is more popular on FF.Net, Pixiv and Deviantart.

Well, that's not strictly true. Fem!Corrin x Azura is more common on those sites, but there's a fair amount of M!Corrin x Azura there too, while you pretty much never see Fem!Corrin x Azura off those sites. So while there's more for it on there, it pretty much exists only there, whereas M!Corrin x Azura is found in a lot of places.

  18. Well yeah, I guess.

For azura's case, I would say no, even though they have a really deep relationship with one another. Through all the scenes, they act like friends. I married her in the Conquest path and Corrin and Azura STILL ACTED LIKE THEY WERE FRIENDS. In Awakening, it's a different story when Lucina and Robin are already married.

It's rather that Azura isn't meant for Corrin OR they forgot to bring it into the scenes.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that. The dialogue works fairly well whether they were married or not, but it still leans romantic. Especially in the JPN version:

Kamui (Birthright endgame): It feels like part of me died when you did...

Something a man would say about his dead wife...but also something that hints at romantic feelings. Then even in the ENG version, you get things like "I couldn't stop thinking about seeing you again", "Did I make you uncomfortable? I just feel really close to you", "I want to tell you how much you mean to me", and while none of that is changed like the Lucina scenes in Awakening, they're definitely not something you say to a completely platonic friend.

And that's still not factoring in how IntSys went out of there way to give her, and her alone, unique supports and confessions when they didn't have to.

Not only would the people who have different waifus get angsty, but IntSys/NoA would be torn to shreds on Tumblr and other sites if it was a hetero relationship.

Let's be real, Tumblr is going to rip apart any company that dares to not canonize a homosexual relationship.

  19. I wouldn't put too much stock in "I loved you since I first saw you" since that happens in several different S-supports for several different characters, perhaps so the romance doesn't feel shoe-horned.

While I agree that there is no strictly defined canon, I'm going to say Azura is the one the devs intended as canon. Three unique support chains and confessions, close and instant friendship in the plot, lots of screentime and Ship Tease together, and apparently she was supposed to have unique supports as Kana's mom before that got cut. There's clear favoritism.

As for the cousins things...values dissonance. Cousin marriage was pretty common in medieval eras, especially among royalty, and it's still legal in Japan now, so they wouldn't have a problem with making a cousin pairing canon.
