  1. Azura's "death" was done right as well in my opinion. There's some subtle foreshadowing to it earlier, and then the final boss has her sing a special version of a song that she's been singing the whole game that causes her to kind of degenerate. At the end, she completely disappears. Not bad at all honestly.

Scarlet's I'm honestly going to put as "horrible." I played Revelations first, so I was just like "why does she only have like...1 support?" My Corrin was already married so I ignored her, and she didn't quite fit on my team, and then bam she died. I can understand why Corrin is upset though, because it was someone her brother seemed to really like. So I can see why she'd feel bad.

I didn't mind his death. I was under the impression that it *was* supposed to be funny. Honestly, I feel like he didn't actually die and just did it so they'd go away.

Agreed. Elise, Ryoma and Azura all had the best deaths in the game due to them being around all game (so you could get attached to them), them all sacrificing themselves in some way or another, and either the suddenness of it (Elise and Ryoma) or the build-up you can see but can't stop (Azura). They all had cutscenes too, with great cinematics and voice acting, which definitely helped.

Xander, Takumi and Kaze's were okay. I was sufficiently attached to the first two to feel bad when they died, but with Xander it was overshadowed by my exasperation by his insistence on fighting, and with Takumi I was just frustrated because he's such a tough boss. For Kaze, I think it's kind of dumb that Corrin doesn't just turn into a dragon and fly them away, but him living in that scene is a lot stupider than him dying--"oh hey a crystal I dunno what it does let me hit it and hope it's useful", and the shock factor of it, plus the fact he'd been with me for a while, did make me feel something.

Izana, Lilith, and Flora's were dumb. Izana drops dead for no reason, I literally forgot Lilith existed so when she died I was like "am I supposed to feel something"?, and I already explained why Flora's is bad.

Scarlet is in this weird in-between void of "okay" and "dumb" for me. Unlike the "dumb" category characters, her death actually did have a purpose in the plot, so it wasn't pointless. But it was so fast you couldn't get attached to her--they were obviously banking on players feeling something from Birthright--and it was on the golden "no one dies" route, which makes it sting even more.

  3. I'll keep it in mind, thank you! Also, the reason I never married Ryoma to someone is because I had a full team and I didn't like bringing someone who was just pairup. In my conquest run I can perhaps have some units on rotation in order to get more people married. Also, is keaton worth using in this run? I've never bothered with Kaden because he was a 1-range glass cannon and Hana already had that role.

I did recruit all the kids I had in Birthright, indeed those paralogues (which I did after chapter 22) made the remaining chapters so much easier. And like you said, I used the first few paralogues to finish supports. So I definitely intend on doing that again!

If you put units on rotation, make sure you prioritize promoting the ones you intend to be on your endgame team so you don't end up screwed over. Keaton's not a Glass Cannon, but a Stone Wall--bulk, STR, and DEF in abundance. He's definitely worth using, in my experience.

  4. Glad to hear you enjoyed the game!

Units you overlooked: Ryoma's kid Shiro is usually really good, so yeah, marrying him off would have been a wise move. You had Rinkah and Kagero left over, and both of them are really fantastic moms for Shiro. The Avatar's kid, Kana, is nothing special, but Shigure is pretty solid, especially when fathered by the Avatar. You were fine this run since you had Hinoka, but in Conquest he's going to be your only Pegasus Knight, and since Azura supports so slowly with anyone not the Avatar you might want to marry her again (their supports on each route are different anyway) so you can get him at a reasonable time.

Conquest kids to be on the look out for: Keaton's daughter Velouria is basically Keaton+++, Odin's daughter Ophelia is extremely good and her Paralogue has very useful loot. If you want to recruit Benny's son Ignatius you need to do it fast, because his paralogue is difficult and after a certain point becomes hair-tearingly frustrating. You should really recruit all the kids though; even if you aren't going to use them, the extra EXP and support grinding that can be done in their Paralogues is good.

  5. As others say, Garon puts him in charge in Conquest, and given Xander's devotion to Garon it's unlikely he'd question it. It's possible Garon was hoping Corrin's inexperience would cause him to screw up and get himself/people he cares about killed. Which if so is actually some clever thinking.

In Birthright, I'm not sure, but as someone else pointed out Ryoma seems to like letting others lead (Scarlet, Yukimura), so maybe he just didn't want to and figured "Corrin's running things fine, no reason to change the chain of command and cause confusion."

  6. So having flaws doesn't prevent one from being a Sue, though Corrin is more of a Black Hole Sue http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlackHoleSue

Only in that everyone likes them and the ones who don't are jerks or evil (which, let's be real, is a trait of nearly all Fire Emblem lords. Ike, Ephraim, Eliwood...). The "laws of the universe bending so they can succeed" part is laughable because Corrin screws up more times than I can count, to his own detriment (unlike a real BHS).

  7. - Corrin: I was more neutral towards them in the beginning, but could see myself growing to like them as an individual character even. But they turned out to be a horribly, bland Mary Sue. Much disappoint.

I don't want to drag this off topic, but no, Corrin's not a Mary Sue. As an Avatar, they're a self-insert made for wish-fulfillment, but they weren't dropped into a pre-existing story to ruin it (unlike you, Kris). But they themselves as a character are very flawed and screw up too often to be "perfect" which is what people seem to mis-define Mary Sue as nowadays.

    To stay on-topic:

Silas: Like a lot of others, I thought it was pretty neat how his friendship with Corrin was so strong he was willing to side with him no matter what. Then it turned out Corrin didn't remember him, which was, okay, a little weak, but not a dealbreaker. Then it turned out that all he talked about was his friendship with Corrin...and that on the rare occasion he wasn't he was kind of a judgemental ass...and that just sunk him for me. I don't hate him or anything, I just couldn't care less.

Effie: I was a bit annoyed at her prevailing gimmick in the JPN version, but when it wasn't around I did like her. I thought her design was quite nice, and was hoping with a good VA and localization, they'd make her better. Boy was I wrong--she got the worst VA in the game (except Male Kana, maybe) and was exaggerated into an even bigger meathead.

Flora: I dunno, I was shocked by her actions my first time through Birthright and I felt pretty bad for her, but my second time they just seemed dumb and laughable. I guess I don't really see what other people see in her because she's basically a copy of Cordelia, a character I hated in the first place.

  8. Yeah, Corrin can be a bit of a jerk. It's why I prefer the cinnamon roll that is M!Corrin.

Agreed. Between the fandom's portrayal of Fem!Corrin, how mean she can be, and my weakness for sweet dorky guys, I genuinely like M!Corrin more.

  9. Edit: Lady Corrin does come across as being mean to Odin for sure! Hinata, I think their support can be interpreted differently. She's also pretty mean to Arthur and Kaden has My Room lines that suggest she's mean to him there.

According to some of the responses from Fem!Corrin's spouses when she wakes them up roughly in MyRoom, she's actually hitting them. Like legit hitting them. M!Corrin just shakes his spouse awake

So yeah. Fem!Corrin's a lot meaner than M!Corrin.

  10. … Speaking of which, is there anything Corrin can do for the brothers as their wife that s/he can't do as their brother/sister? Other than give birth to their child? Because I fail to see any romantic chemistry between Corrin and any of the brothers (and the siblings as a whole, if we want to extend it in general).

She can heal them through sex of course, because her wonderful magical woman parts can cure ANYTHING, how DARE you not get that she's speshul only her love can save them blah blah blah.

Have I mentioned that the fandom portrayal of F!Corrin irks me beyond belief? Because it does. Especially when they ship her with her brothers, and especially when they use that to "fix" them, completely dismissing the power of platonic and familial love as if Corrin would refuse to help their siblings unless they get laid.

(Also, I completely agree that Corrin completely lacks romantic chemistry with any and all of the siblings, both in story and in supports. Especially Takumi, who just goes back to being snarky and distant in their support chain for reasons I can't discern.)

  11. I'll second that except for Corn/Azura. I personally don't see why they'd make a good pairing, but eh.

Agreed especially about Corrin/Azura being great

I can kind of see why people would go for Leokumi--their support chain was pretty great and had a good transition to friendship--but honestly most of it seems to be based off of "they're pretty boys who argue, let's turn it into sexual tension leading to steamy porn!" rather than any actual interest in their dynamics. And it's everywhere, so I'm not surprised people (including me) are getting sick of it.

It varies. I haven't seen a lot on FF.net or DeviantART, but it seems a lot more popular on Ao3 and Pixiv.

And Tumblr (though Tumblr has a really big LGBTA+ fanbase and a lot of weird stuff shows up there. I must have seen the only Fem!Corrin/Velouria art piece in existence there the other day).

  12. yeah, when i was typing the list i noticed that ao3 said xander/f!corrin had eleven works, which is definitely not right - there's like, 30something or more

i would've expected m!corrin/azura to be higher myself - i thought i saw it one time on there, but overall f!corrin has more works iirc, so i guess i wasn't real surprised

what i find hilarious about the list myself, though, is that leo/takumi is so popular it makes it on there twice and somehow i'm not inclined to think that it's entirely incorrect :p

It makes up roughly half of the overall "Corrin/Azura" tag, with F!Corrin/Azura the other half, so they're actualy about equal. But the other big fanfiction site, ff.net, doesn't have nearly as many F!Corrin/Azura (like maybe 3?) and more than double M!Corrin/Azura, so I chalk it up to AO3 being the breeding grounds for porn and same-sex pairings. Leokumi, most notably, is popular on other sites, but it doesn't dominate them nearly as much as it does on AO3.

  13. out of pure boredness and curiosity i checked the ao3 tag for fe14, which gives the 10 ships that have been written the most

    1) leo/takumi

    2) xander/ryoma

    3) m!corrin/niles

    4) camilla/hinoka

    5) leo & takumi

    6) leo/f!corrin

    7) takumi/f!corrin

    8) leo/niles

    9) azura/f!corrin

    10) xander/f!corrin

irt i don't really care myself about whats overrated and whats not now, it was just something that i kinda felt like sharing lol

AO3's numbers are actually incorrect--M!Corrin/Azura is as high as Azura/F!Corrin, but for some reason it doesn't show up at all in the "Relationships" menu. Corrin/Azura as a whole should be around #3-4, but it's not up there either.

But then again AO3 is kind of crap anyway why won't you let me exclude tags from my searches I am so tired of those stupid Alpha-Beta-Omega dynamics okay?

  14. ^This. I could draw some ship art if my art didn't suck/take ages to finish but I barely have enough time to, which sucks even more for the underrated ones I ship. I'm so sorry Subaki/Sakura, you'll have to remain artless :<

Come to think of it, I don't see as much art for, say, Corrin/Azura or Saizo/Kagero compared to a lot of F!Corrin or yaoi ships in Fates. You'd think the pairings that so many people do in their playthroughs would get some art on tumblr or pixiv, but nope. Just shows how passionate those shippers are, I suppose.

Corrin/Azura actually gets a lot compared to the rest of the Fem!Corrin or yaoi ships. Not as much as them, but more than Takumi/Oboro. Take it from someone who digs through that tag all the time

I chalk this up to fanart being dominated by female artists, who are going to be inclined to draw fanart for "their" character and male/male because Yaoi Fangirls.

  15. I completely agree with you. The amount of hula hooping to justify Kamui not being related to the Hoshidans at all so that people can marry them was just utterly stupid and unnecessary. Not to mention, a previous FE game has had two pairs of genetic half-siblings who are really cousins be able to marry each other, in the same game where two half-siblings can get married by glitch, so technically FE has gone there before anyway. And that still doesn't address the big issue of "family" and "sibling love". If IS wanted to make a story on sibling love, they should've kept it that way and not let you marry siblings.

Azura is an odd duck in that as the way she is now, I could technically see her marrying Marx or Leon without too much squick? But Ryouma and Takumi, she grew up with and they see her as a sister and that's what their supports are about. It's just dumb. I personally think Azura should've just been another half-sister to the Nohrians in the first place.

    And then they do

    the cousins reveal

which just makes the whole thing seem pointless. Yes,

Japan and the medieval ages have different values than America, and I don't really mind cousin marriage, but it's just ridiculous after all the hoops they went through to avoid sibling incest. I don't mind stories including incest so long as they do something with it rather than making it an after-thought, and don't go back on their genuinely good themes! Otherwise it's just a fetish! That's the real difference between FE4 and Fates.

I'm kind of okay with her marrying Xander and Leo since they all know they aren't related and weren't raised together, but the step-children thing is still a bit leery to me and their supports weren't that great. And there's definitely no justification for marrying the men who were raised as her brothers and who she views as her brothers. I agree, she should have just been another of Garon's bastards who happened to stumble across the information about Valla. Before the plot or during it, it doesn't matter.
