If the story does involve going against the church, one thing that I thought was interesting was that the "home base"/MyCastle type area that we see Byleth running around in looks very church-like:

The inside even has the pews and the altar and everything. Not sure what it means for the story though. Maybe you start off the game on the same side as the church?

That's what I think! Since the church rules the land, I think the three key characters are with the church initially, then Edelgarde will rebel against them (since in the trailer she asks the teacher if he'll go with her down that dangerous path), and then it'll be a matter of convincing Claude and Dimitri to change sides. That's just my take, though, haha.

Thank you for the insight and for posting the images !!

  2. ... how do you think it would work? What plot elements or mechanics do you think will remain or change?

    This is just for fun!

So, I honestly believe there will be a Jugdral remake in a few years from now. I didn't think it possible at first but then the Gaiden remake came, and if a Gaiden remake is possible, more so a Jugdral one; Seisen no Keifu is a lot of people's favorite entry in the series as well as one of my personal favorites too, and I'm sure IntSys is aware of the former.

That being said, there are certain elements I don't think will make it in this time and age, but that are nonetheless of critical importance to the plot of the game (mostly the incest bit). So this is how I think (or hope?) the remake could make it:

    1. Genealogy and Thracia chapters will be all in one game. FE4 and FE5 are games that complement each other, so much so it would be hard to sell them separately, as opposed to when they first came out, since Thracia was released 3 years later. Also, they're not really that long because of the limitations of the console back then, and this time the remake would be in the Switch. This is something I've seen done in other games, or like in the remake for Devil Survivor 2 in which they added a whole new arc where there was originally just one, so it is possible.
    2. I don't think the maps will be as big, although I actually liked that and would prefer it to stay. But generally speaking, people didn't seem to like that, so they'll probably make the maps smaller (I don't think they can divide them). This would also fit well with my two-games-in-one idea :P:.
    3. They'll tone down the incest thing, maybe turning them into cousins instead of siblings, since the important part is the blood more than how closely related they are. Although, I know the cousins deal is taken differently according to the country and culture. Where I come from, it's whatever, kinda weird but not considered incest.
    4. There will be no mention of sacrificing babies. They'll probably change it to older children or teens. Nintendo isn't ready to mention babies or toddlers; otherwise, if we were to be realistic, Garon would have tried to kill Corrin off since the beginning instead of locking them up  :P:.

As for the game mechanics, I think they'll stay the same and they'll blend some from both games, like adding that mechanic in FE5 about mounted units being on foot when inside a castle or similar.

But how do you guys think it would go? would you like a FE4/FE5 remake? Or maybe you think it would never make it into existence?

  3. Welcome back :D:!! I also made this account two years ago but hadn't participated until less than a week ago, after the release of the new FE teaser trailer.

I hope you get the chance to play the older games as well as the latest one (Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia), I think all Fire Emblem games have their own charm and are incredible and fun in their own way.

    Have a great day!

  4. This is not a good title... it's hard not to get offended by it. It also has a very personal tone.

But anyway... I think you'd like to know that Echoes was successful. Remakes and spin off are held by a different standard in the industry, they can't ever sell the same numbers as the main (and original) series. As I said in another topic, the statistic and estimates made for remakes and spin offs are very different from those made for the main titles. So IntSys wasn't discouraged by the fact it didn't sell as much as Awafates, they know that's impossible for a remake/spin-off. In that sense, Echoes did great, and it's not crazy to imagine a Jugdral remake in the future.

Good luck getting the game you want, I guess...

Shipped effectively means sold to publishers, so this is more or less a moot point.

What. Warriors games have always been fairly niche (for example, DW9, released on three platforms, has only sold 750k). FEW's sales are about on-par with HW, and both of them had 80% of their sales in the West.
And as a general rule of thumb: when do spinoffs sell as much as main series titles?

Anyways, I'd expect 1.5 million sales or so out of it.

It's a fact HW has been more successful, regardless of shipping statements. And in regards to that "general rule of thumb", that is exactly what I said in the same post you quoted from me. Spin off and remakes never sell as well as games from the main series, so the statistics and estimates they make for them in order to be considered a success are always different. That is why I said Warriors and SoV don't serve as a forecast for 3H.

  6. 1 hour ago, Cysx said:

They're not wrong though. That's some impressive good will from the resellers(which isn't a thing) at play if both of those numbers are real.

If what you mean is that they went overboard with the statistics of how much they thought the game was going to sell, then yes, I agree :(:. It did sell well by general standards, but not nearly the same as past warriors games did, and not even close to Fates (1.6 million sales in it's first fiscal year) or Awakening (1.9 million sales in it's first fiscal year). Since it's a crossover and not even a strategy game, they should have been more realistic with the shipping. Hyrule Warriors didn't have that problem since it's got similar rpg elements to the main Zelda series, even with the hack n' slash.

1 hour ago, False Prophet said:

So, can we learn anything from Echoes and Warriors' sells to make a forecast for Three Houses?

I don't think SoV nor Warriors can serve as a forecast, to be honest. Warriors because it's a crossover, not everyone cared for it (in regards to the FE fandom). And as a general rule, spin-offs and remakes don't sell as much as the games from the main series, so SoV was never going to sell as well as Awafates did, and they knew it.

I think 3H will sell at least 1 million.

It's not about the likelihood of them returning, its his reasoning that's the issue. If he had said 'with the likely return of a player avatar, we can comfortably assume that romance options will be returning as well' then that would be a fair and accurate statement to make.

I agree. Also because I have this little candle of hope for base conversations (the way they were in New Mystery) instead of support conversations... of course not exactly the same but an improved version, with all that marriage stuff and A+ or whatever :>_<:. Base conversations as in New Mystery were just so much easier...

Sadly, I see the "That is Tiki" or "That is Nowi" post almost everywhere now a days. Really wish people wouldn't jump to conclusions. The idea of getting another green-haired dragon girl is hardly unusual. Fire Emblem likes to re-use tropes and homages, like with all the blue-hared lords.

I feel pretty sure that Mercedes and Hilda are just a work in progress and generics were used in their place for now. Game really looked incomplete, which probably contributed to it not appearing at Treehouse Live.

I'm a little surprised at how few people on Youtube are noticing that the enemy general guy seems to be using the same sword the woman is holding, as they have the same hilt. Really, I'm surprised how little people seem to make that observation.

Haha, don't worry, people did noticed! I know I did, but many others did too, and it's even mentioned on the analysis Vincent posted :D:

  8. KONO DIO DA!

Sorry, I couldn't stop myself :P: I really hope that's a location we can go to.

To be honest, I think gamexplain has lost it's touch a little bit :(:. Not counting the Claude thing which was something small (and the second time they misidentified I think they meant to say Dimitri), there are obvious clues in the trailer they missed or misinterpreted. Like for example, having no idea who the old man was fighting against when we see him attacking soldiers from the church, and also the surnames of both Dimitri and Claude already link them directly to the other two houses, so they can't belong to the same as Edelgarde's.

That being said, they are incredible when it comes to detailing gameplay! There are many interesting bits I didn't know. I so wish the troops do work like in Advance Wars and it can decrease or increase your prowess in battle, it would be awesome. Or I just miss AW that much :>_<:.

Thank you for posting the video!!

While the handling of Fates was sometimes inelegant, it can't be ignored just how problematic the source material was. Wedding and bedding children is...frowned upon in the west, so they had to awkwardly write off Elise and Midori as "technical adults" and M!Kanna got his romance supports rewritten because he's like 10 years old. A bait-and-switch lesbian would not go over well in the west, so Soleil was written into a lesbian leaning bisexual, even though she isn't. Xander was written to be more heroic than he really was because cowardice and blind obedience are not seen positively (which ended up backfiring because his actions don't change, making him a hypocrite). Swimsuits, hot springs and skinship all got neutered because the metric fuckton of fanservice that is par for the course for Japanese media is not what the west is used to (broad strokes, but you get the point).

If I were Treehouse, you would be hearing groans of increasing discomfort from me being asked to make Fates presentable.

I agree with all of this. Also the changes in Forrest personality were made taking into consideration people in the west weren't going to be happy about Forrest apologizing and accepting the bad treatment just because of who he was. Same thing happened with Niles x Male Corrin, and Rhajat x Female Corrin, in which Niles and Rhahat both feel bad and rejected for being in love with someone of the same gender. Western audiences would have taken it badly.

I do think Treehouse is localizing 3H but I don't think this new game will be as problematic. Also, for the stuff Treehouse did wrong they received a lot of backlash, so much so that even other localization team mocked them, so I'm sure they know they have to be careful now.

If we do collect them, I wish they could be items that we could use, whether as individual pieces or as a combined whole.

In Awakening, we were collecting the five gems to complete the shield, but it was strictly an element of the story so it does not really do anything for Chrom gameplay wise.

I get what you mean, like in Mystery of the Emblem the star shards and the Fire Emblem itself at least give the holder significant stat boosts (and for some reason the Fire Emblem gives Marth the ability to open stuff without a key). Strangely enough, even though it's the same Fire Emblem, it has no stat boosts or anything in Awakening.

How exactly "somehow key to the story" equal "literal"? By using word "somehow" you already creating leaveaway that IS might use imaginery from famous chinese poem (That I can't find anywhere) in it's own way. This poem apparently also refer "peaceful utopia" Which is something I am quite  certain is  not what we will get in it's literal sense of word for example.

FE16 is not direct adaptation of it, it use it uses it to tell own story and give it depth. Trying use every single possible meaning could do it diservice even.

What's this? Please, don't derail or change what I'm saying. I never said the game was an adaptation of the poem or an adaptation of anything, nor I said anything about them "trying to use every single possible meaning", so please don't put words in my mouth. And before you say something like "that's basically what you said", let me answer straight away: no, it isn't.

I simply think the japanese title has an important meaning, and that's it. There's no need to agree with me.

EDIT: Also, I used "somehow" because I myself don't know what the story is, I don't work in IntSys to know that. "Somehow" does not equal "somewhat".

Interesting read and definitely one of the more compelling theories attempting to pin down the story that I've read so far.

I will definitely be keeping tabs on this so that I may compare it to details in the game as they are released. Nicely done!

Thank you very much!! I appreciate it :D:!!

More or less yes. Poem itself is flowery metaphor, so I don't think we need take literaly what is vague alusion in first place. It need  just to get mood right to make it's tittle justice.

I disagree, actually, I believe it is important. They're already using the poem as the symbols for each house (the flower, representing spring in the poem, is in the house Edelgarde comes from, the snow representing winter for Dimitri's house, and the moon representing autumn for Claude's), so they are being very literal about it. And the fact they didn't named it with some generic title but specifically took it from a famous chinese poem indicates the meaning of this poem is somehow key to the story or the characters.

I can't speak about the localization of the title being Three Houses, though, because it's not the first time a localization team (specially for FE) kills the original meaning of a name, phrase or entire conversation just because of some lame reasoning :(:

  12. Every aspect of the poem doesn't have to apply to all of the protagonists. It could be that Claude fills the third definition about a wasteful life; Dimitri looks like the idealistic yet ultimately wrong kind of character, so maybe he could fill the first definition about elegance on par with shallowness, or it could be Edelgard. And the one left would go by the second definition.

guh...I know it starts out with something electronic, but I don't know if the classification would be dubstep...

Once we're at the shot in the trailer walking around the castle we get horns more in line with previous games. Definitely curious if they'll do the Fates/Awakening thing where the music has an in battle and out of battle variation that we switch between seamlessly.

The dubstep part he refers about is at the end, just before the sleeping girl appears, not at the beginning.

I personally really liked the song; at first I was put off by it because it sounded a lot more modern than what we've been getting until now, but then I realised how awesome it is :D:, and I'm guessing that's what we'll be getting for the most of the soundtrack list.

What I found interesting is how the beginning starts with a voice chanting in like a creepy ritual-like or demonic way.

  14. 8 hours ago, Cysx said:

I'm wondering if the "harsh, irrational world" line might have more weight than I originally thought. Since we get a large-scale battle in the background at this point in the trailer, I initially shrugged it off as a relatively generic line about how war sucks and the church is making everything terrible..., but I'm not so sure anymore. That being said, outside of that iron maiden thing, we saw no signs of monsters or natural catastrophes whatsoever, so it's hard to say for sure.

It does seem likely that we're going to oppose the church for potentially the whole game, but the reason might not simply be that they're ruthless. And we could also be running around collecting/destroying the crests in an attempt to restore a lost balance of some kind, not opposing the church directly but ultimately having to fight them anyway.

I'm just really hopeful that line actually means something.

Well, there's the theory talked about here before saying tge crests could be the remains of the goddess' mortal body. If so, maybe reuniting them all would make the goddess appear/revive like a final boss, something that sounds to me VERY Fire Emble-esque, and I hope it's not the case because that would be a very simple and straightfoward storyline.

Or collecting them could make the Fire Emblem.

I thought I would like to add that translating the Japanese title into 'Four Seasons' really doesn't do it justice in terms of showing what the meaning of the phrase is. That word/phrase originated from a Chinese idiom that does refer to the four seasons. But I feel like there are also other definitions of that phrase (in Chinese) that can also be applied to the game. To keep it super condensed, the idiom itself can be used in three different ways. The first is to describe poetry or texts that are very flowery, elegant or grand in terms of the choice of words but in actuality mean very little, shallow or be 'hollow'. The second definition is used to describe a beautiful romance. The third definition is how a person is living a wasteful life of various 'pleasures'. My translations aren't perfect since it's really hard to translate idioms into English without writing an essay but I feel like some of these definitions can also come into play in terms of shaping the plot of the story.

Of course...it might not matter at all because those are the phrase's original definitions in Chinese but I'm not sure if the Japanese version of the phrase includes anything beyond describing the seasons..

Ohh, thank you su much for sharing this info :D:!! I was really curious about the chinese poem itself! since it's the name of the game, it should mean a lot. I hope they gave it that name more for the content of the original source than for the japanese interpretation of it, since what you describe sounds very very interesting, and I would like to see it applied somewhere in the game.

    For real though.

The first time I watched it, I was kind of unimpressed. The lore still doesn't impress me, but I think the first time, I let it put a bad taste in my mouth and then I didn't like the way the gameplay looked either. After watching it a few more times though, I am pretty excited for the gameplay. I hope the formation thing doesn't end up being just another obnoxious gimmick, because right now I think it could definitely go that way. The avatar looks pretty cool, and even though I was sort of hoping we wouldn't have one this time around, I think the teacher role is a GREAT place for the avatar to be.

    What are your theories?

I think the teasers and trailers for Fates really set the bar high, they were truly well made, had me obssesed for a year and a half straight, haha :P:. So maybe we were all expecting a teaser as tense and dramatic as those, and that's why people aren't as hyped by this one (yet!).

So I understand! Even though I found it awesome, it didn't make me feel the same those Fates trailers did. It's more my love for the series what makes me so excited for 3H :D:

As for the theories, I already posted them Here ! In case you'd like to take a look :):

This is a pretty interesting analysis. Although I thought some of this, I didn't realize the possibility that Mila 2.0 could be in fact, evil, and Berserker Rudolf will be an ally. This makes me a lot more interested in the characters of the story, because Fire Emblem has a tendency to make the pretty & flower-y characters good guys while the fire & brimstone types the bad guys. It's usually very obvious who's good and who's bad, but now I'm realizing that this may not be the case with this game.

Furthermore, looking at some of the other enemy NPCs shown (Mercedes, Hilda, and some of the other guys), this definitely seems to be true. Because the more I look at the trailer, the less they look recruitable. This is pretty interesting, because this makes identifying recruitable enemies harder, and there's a lot more female enemies as well. The enemy definitely looks cartoonishy evil, so the characters seem enough to get excited about.

    Thank you!! :D:

I hadn't thought about the recruitable aspect, but its true! there seems to be more enemies with a specific face and name now, so that will be very interesting. And I do hope there will be more female enemies in general as you say, that would be cool!

And yes, I get what you mean, evil characters in Fire Emblem tend to be so easy to spot, and with that whole "being pretty equals goodness" thing the overall message is not good, haha.

You know, it's possible that the sword and whip-sword aren't the same thing, but are just both made from the same spine.

Oh, you're right!! I haven't thought of that! maybe twin blades? But yes, it could be, a dragon spine should be very long. I do hope the tokens are different objects, though, maybe one of them being a bow for Claude, an axe or sword for Edelgarde, and so own.

Maybe she's nuzzling the blade, that looks extremely similar to the one the Rudolf-esque character wields, because she loves him? Or loved who he was in the past?

I really like everything you had to say here, and appreciate the screenshots.

I think major organized religion tends to be kind of questionable. I don't dislike religion, and I believe everyone has a right to practice whichever religion they see fit.. but I'm excited at the prospect of 3H dealing with this issue. Why it can be a bad thing to have the state controlled by the church, what things can happen if religious zealots are left unchecked, even enabled. I'm not fond of "religion BAD!" stories, but I hope that they can handle this angle with nuance and grey-morality.

I don't really want to judge the supposed queen's design based off of the 3D CG. I mean, think back to how.. gross Mila looked in SoV during cutscenes vs. her official art.

      Reveal hidden contents

https://imgur.com/a/ixGMDCC (sorry for use of thumbnail, couldn't find any other decent img of CG Mila. Its from Pheonixmaster1's playthrough and the video is here.

If you watch Mila cutscenes in action, she looks especially weird. And since they haven't learned their lesson from SoV's bad cutscenes (at least for this trailer's build, I hope), I'm not gonna jump the gun on judgments.

    Thank you very much :D:!!

I also think a theocracy can't be perfect, realistically speaking, and history proves it. So it would be very interesting to see how they portray it in the game. It doesn't have to be the "the church is actually evil" trope, it could be them just being wrong, which is what I think it will end up being. I just really hope they don't make everything black-and-white.

  19. 1 hour ago, Enduin said:

Great write up, this has been my general belief about the story as well

What I really hope is that the Church isn't Evil with a capital E, but more so that they are just really zealous and fanatical to a major fault and won't/can't see the error of their ways.

I really like the theory I saw on here or Reddit that the "Crests" from the Goddess aren't simply emblems or tokens imbued with divine power of some kind but are actual relics/weapons made from her very bones and remains. The chief evidence for this is the bone whip blade we see in the trailer that the barbarian/highlander Leader uses to devastating effect, but which we also see this supposed Seiros, or Church Leader, embracing in a very creepy and eerie manner. Kind of like she's embracing the very bones of her Goddess. The idea that the Goddess is dead is great to me as I really would like a game where the main antagonist and final boss isn't possessed by Evil itself or Yin to some purely good Deities Yang, but rather just a messed up person. Let the gods be dead, or at the very least in the background, and let the people and their own imperfections and motivations rule/ruin the day.

Have Seiros and the Church/Kingdom just be a group of fanatics that revere these regalia made of their dead God and have taken whatever Dogma they follow too far, twisted and corrupted through years of dominance and power, with just a bit of every day greed, lust for power and megalomania coloring that. I really don't want a whole "the Church and religion is just a lie and a front for something nefarious" or "the god is actually evil and tricking/possessing everyone." Rather "Hey the Church is out of control and doing more harm than good and have lost sight of whatever mission and message the Goddess may have bestowed upon us."

But we probably won't get that. There's way too much stuff in the trailer that hints at Deities or higher beings of some kind are going to play a role and that there's probably some big bad Evil pulling some stuff behind the scenes. Even if they do try to subvert expectations by having the Church and this Seiros maybe not be the good guys.

That's what I want, not a blatant evil, but an imperfect religion. And that theory about the crests is incredible! I really hope it turns out like that, and it would make sense because the whip blade does look like a spine, and the crests are supposed to be tokens that signify the "power of the goddess", which could truly mean her very own bones. It would be so great if she were dead and gods were not to interfere, but then we have that sleeping manakete girl at the end, which I personally don't like because it just looks like she's going to fullfill the same role as Tiki, or maybe she's the goddess herself. I hope it's something else entirely, but...

    1 hour ago, halvey said:

I agree with everything you said, but I would like to add some of my own thoughts. First I want to note that the sword-whip the old guy is using in one scene is the same sword the queen lady is holding in another scene. So some things don't add up here. How is the sword in the old guy's hands one second and in the queen's hands in another? My answer is that before the game's setting, the queen and old guy were at war, the old guy loses and the queen gains possession of the sword. So in the early game the queen holds a lot of power over the continent. Because looking back at the reveal trailers for Awakening and Fates, they mostly show scenes from opening cutscenes and the early game. So I think that the cutscenes shown in the trailer are part of the opening cutscene for the game. Thus really focusing on the story and the world through events in the past.

That's actually what I'm suspecting too! that it could be that old man either dies in the first chapters of the game like Mikoto, or is dead since before the game even begins. What I'm sure about is the fact that no matter when, he dies, and that's how the queen gets the sword. That's why I don't even consider him that important. What I believe is that the three key characters will eventually continue where that old man left or something.
