It's in Awakening because that's what I'm playing atm and it's way easier with a small cast, but you're more than welcome to expand if you like :3c

LMAO YES I did Sully too actually. Gr8 taste my pal. The other one was Libra, who I'm 99% sure is the human embodiment of Depression Comedy. Like seriously someone check on him.

Multiquote's choking on mobile, so I'm gonna respond with tags, sorry:

@uniqueme too :( thassom relatable content right there.

@NinjaMonkey feel free to tag a mod or something to have them move it, then.

  2. Ya gorl got her data back today. Time to waste it on another long, incomprehensible dumpster fire of a thread =)

This thread was really fun when we did it for main series games, so let's do it for our fave mens and womens in this particular bad boy. Without using names, tell me about your favourite characters as poorly as you can. (You guys could turn this into a guessing game or s/t, I don't care. I just wanna see what you silly sonofagunz have for me.) And MAKE IT FASHION.

I've got two files running right now with two different spouses, and they're both tied for fave at the mo', so here they are. Spoilered for pg-13 language again, sorry mods. :) istillloveyou

    Spoiler

Fave Wife probably has 35 tank tops in slightly different shades of grey and washes her bras four times a year. 90% of her blood is caffeine at any given time. She's responsible for running inside jokes and memes into the ground until no one wants to hear them anymore. Don't let her mix you a drink, because it's just going to be two different brands of whiskey. If I had to guess, I'd say she's probably the reason Fredster is so damn tired all the time. It's ok tho I lov her anyway

    Spoiler

The Favourite Man is the kind of guy you'd find alone in the back of a barn, dissociating and listening to Cher's hit single, Believe. He's really weird and has no friends; the inside of his mind probably looks like the feeling of staying up until 5 am watching vine compilations. He's king of the creative depression meal. Raw blueberries and crackers? Sure, that's a depression meal now. When you ask him how he's doing, it takes every muscle in his facial region not to respond with "Dead inside and ready to fuckin' party". Also, can't support with Chrom, which makes me wonder if Chrom even knows he's in this army. Probably not, actually.

K go, make me chortle. Bonus points if you use the word "chortle" in your post.

  3. Yknow, for a hot second there I was confused at all the people saying Nolan was anywhere close to Boyd, because my last Boyd was an unkillable god who no one except maybe Gatrie (who I baby the hell out of, 'cause he's my bro) and Aran/Nephenee could compare to.

Then I remembered that I gave Boyd Vantage, and he barely took a hit for the rest of the game. That was a trip.

Anyway, long story short, I don't think any of the DB are explicitly better than the Greil Mercs, though it does depend on how you take care of them. My Laura and Rhys have wound up pretty equal in almost every run, as have my Aran and Nephenee. There's no reason not to use DB over GM, but using all of them is probably gonna put some of your Laguz units at risk, and Janaff is too precious to me for that amount of snackrifice.

  4. This topic could have gone in General or in FFTF I guess (and if it ends up there I won't be surprised ffpgpft) but this is the installment that brings out my Regina George complex for whatever reason, so it's here.

Anyone else do that thing where you have a character you don't like, so you just let them suffer in whatever silly, petty ways you can think of? I don't mean killing them off; just reclassing them, benching them, or setting them up kinda goofy because you're Game God and you can do whatever you want? (It'll be really awkward when the responding response is "no" lmao oh well)

    Spoiler

Personally, I am absolutely the kind of person who will abuse the hell out of Azura's sing ability to grind up supports, and then bench her before she gets a husband of her own, because Shigure isn't allowed to be born. Likewise, my sister has kept Benny single in every single playthrough she's done because she doesn't like his kid's hairstyle. Hayato inevitably gets reclassed into Oni Savage, because it looks silly on him. Corrin also always gets reclassed into something different every time (though I do like the merchant, personally; don't h8 it's a cute outfit) because of how ugly the dragon is and how much I don't wanna use it.

    Savage, right?

And as for things that have basically no effect, at least in my files, you can bet my Xander in every run is gonna have the effigy mask on, just so I don't have to look at him and wonder how we got here. That noodle-hair ho looks like he stans the Chainsmokers, the fuck. Get outta here.

(...please come be petty with me. I'm very lonely and we're between rpdr seasons.)

One thing we should absolutely not do is implement trashy cutscenes in the style of reality tv confessionals. If you're not familiar, that's these things:

     92E7A41C-508D-4F1C-8DB0-288759476785-1558-000003A88C518811.gif.8b25b81d464a8f057857f2495f6d1510.gif

Concept being, whenever you get a new unit, defeat a boss, go through a support/base conversation, whatever, you get a little scene of one of your characters snarkily telling you how they feel about the thing that just happened. And in true reality tv fashion, these should be as sassy and over-the-top as possible. "So she's coming up on this dragon, right, and I'm like BITCH! But girl, that dragon was not playing. I cannot believe she died in that moment. Legendary."

(This is actually something I'm using in a personal project lmao but the idea of it being in fe made me laugh, so here we are.)

This... is the most incredible thing I have ever seen. You should make a thread to expand just on this idea, like an entire system based upon the shallowness and unintentionally humorous drama of reality TV.

I lost it at "I got dogs to put through college."

This is how I write my own stuff c': it's dumb and shallow, absolutely, but I'm glad you find it as funny as I do! Hey, hit my inbox up, we'll make this dream a reality. (I'm absolutely reading your blog right now, lmao.)

Also, everyone on this thread is savage AF but also no chill, uh, like that one vine. You people are sadistic and I LOVE it.

  6. WHAT!!!!! girl same I beat you to this by like three days

Frozen yogurt is going to be your friend for the next little while, for real. Get the yummiest froyo you get find and watch Heathers. Heathers is always good. Try not to play around with your stitches too much. They will come out soon, on their own, but if you rip at them they're gonna sting like hell.

Also, if you just wanna chat, hmu!

  7. Why am I not surprised that this thread is also a salty mess. Jeepers.

Y'know, Lyn is a character that's hugely recognizable outside of the Fire Emblem fan base. Do you guys maybe possibly think that featuring her in a trailer reveal like this might be a way to draw attention to the game for fringe fans and people outside the fandom? Remember, it's a crossover title. It's designed to appeal to a general mainstream audience, not just veterans who are going to be picking it apart for every anti-FE sin it commits. On that note, on the Ike discourse: he will almost definitely be a late reveal or available a couple months into the game, to get people talking about it again after hype has started to die down.

As of right now, are weapons and game representation unbalanced as hell? Yes. But at this point, marketing is a much heavier force than balance. Shit, a lot of the game's initial audience isn't going to care about balanced weapons or game rep at all. You're all taking this way too seriously. Don't be a clown.

  8. I was gonna make a personal art thread, but after a conversation that happened in the Unpopular Opinions thread over in General FE, I decided it would be more fun to do things a little bit differently. So, welcome to my "Chill Room" thread! Here's a place where we can just kind of toss around & chat about ideas for fan content (or, hey, if you're feeling it, original content too.) if you want feedback on a smaller idea and don't feel making a whole thread for it, come on in and throw it at me! We can have a cool time together.

Something I've been slowly working at is a personal RPGmaker project that involves criminals being pardoned if they participate in a RPDR-style reality competition. I've also been developing this paper doll-esque art style, which I only have one example of but will toss in the box below. Thing is, I'm actually considering revamping them into FE OCs instead? Or at least giving them an AU as such. If I do that, I'll be back with more art to ask you guys what classes they ought to be for sure :)

Unpopular Opinion: I like Peri. A lot. And I am not able to defend myself for it. She's just psycho, adorable, and I married her my first Conquest playthrough and then married Peri!Selkie my second playthrough because I needed Peri's genetics in my child o_o I have a problem.

I like Peri too, actually. She's so out of place and strange that I can't take her seriously, so any conversation involving her comes across as incredibly surreal. Also, her support with Odin is one of the few times I like Odin, and it's pretty funny IMO c':

Hm…I wanna say you're gonna like Mae once you get to Echoes, but she has a couple moments where she worries if maybe she's doomed to the single life if she doesn't sweeten up, so that might be a problem.

This is not so unpopular, actually - there are a lot of people who dislike the portrayal of women in these games, and it's not even only the feminists so we know it's a real opinion and not them making noise(sorry to any feminists who may be offended. Quick info for those who are: I don't care, don't waste my time telling me I'm sexist or a woman-hater because I'm just going to ignore you).

I think the real reason people hate on Camilla isn't her body type per se, rather it's the fact that here we have a character with a chance to have a really in-depth background explaining her…unique?…personality, and instead they literally just used her to push the sex appeal of the game so we end up with a rather disturbing one-note character with no explanation for why she acts so disturbingly obsessed with her siblings and Corrin. I mean, she isn't wearing pants. If you look you can totally tell she's just wearing some kind of armored leggings and panties for her legs. So no, we don't all hate on her for her body type or breast size, at least some of us are more pissed at her one-note-ness.

You wanna explain those in greater detail? I'm not sure what any of those mean in this context.

(I'm on mobile, so I can't chop this up, sorry!) I might like Mae, actually - she seems alright from what I've heard of her. Azura is the one that annoys me most and she honestly suffers from the writing problems that doomed Fates as a whole, so if Echoes is even moderately better in that regard, there probably won't be a problem with her.

The feminism thing is why I expected backlash tbh :/ There are definitely places where it's hard to bring up writing/design issues that involve women and/or minorities and not immediately be dismissed, regardless of the actual points made, which is why I'm glad Serenes Forest is such a chill community. I was looking at this from a "butch girl who really likes other butch girls" and a "longtime fan who wants to see the series improve and expand" perspective tbh, and that second one is probably pretty relatable to most of us on here.

Yeah, see, and those points about Camilla are totally fine and fair. No issues there. The issue lies more with the occasional "Camilla and thots like her should die, A cup brigade is pure and wholesome"-type comments. (I know a guy who says that exact kind of thing IRL tbh. He keeps sending me pics of the younger girls in bikinis and yelled at me for marrying a dude he disapproved of in Fates. Ugh.)

Sure! The Lords are pretty much just as repetitive in the looks department as their girlfriends tend to be. This comment was more in relation to the concept of other types of characters also suffering from relative sameness, but I'll explain anyway. For male Lords, there are the thinner, younger-looking Lords - Marth and everyone with his body type, basically. Then there's the bigger model, like Ike, who might be a bit "rougher" but still has relatively the same design concepts going on in terms of attractiveness, form, and even colour palette. Then, female Lords all tend to have roughly the same shape, age, and even mindset to a degree. (This could be averted with female Robin, which was a hugely nice change, and then we lost it again with Corrin ;n; ) On the one hand, I get this is partly for marketing purposes; it is, of course, easier to sell a product featuring a main character who looks similar to previous characters who the fanbase liked. On the other hand, the similarity across so many entries at this point is indicative that the creators aren't so willing to break away from the tropes people are starting to notice an overwhelming repetition of.

Anyway! I have a cool concept or two for new Lords and other things like that, so I'm gonna go make that thread in Creative once I'm out of the shower.

I absolutely and totally agree with you. That's one of the reasons I don't like Celica. The gentle maiden thing is so tired.

Yes! You get me. It's not like we're asking for them to take out gentle maidens entirely, either. They dominate main/major character slots, though, and are almost always portrayed as the most beautiful, most kind, most intelligent, most valuable women in their respective stories. Snore.

Couldn't help but think about Final Fantasy XII. Looking at the plot, Basch is very clearly the main character, but Squeenix would rather be tarred and feathered than forced to put a scarred (gasp!), 40yo (doublegasp!) man at the center of the cover.

Anyway, I'm also kinda bothered that Fire Emblem plays the "Good = Beautiful" trope straight like 95% of the time, usually with a rather specific beauty standard. I supposed they think they would only confuse the players if they didn't have the visual cue for a character's alignment.

I'm not very familiar with FF, so I had to look up Basch - and dude! Why not?! With zero knowledge of his character, he looks awesome. I especially like the version with the full beard.

If the responses in this thread say anything, it's that more of the fanbase is alienated by this than I originally thought, which is both reassuring and depressing. I would chalk it up to just being a JRPG thing in general and leave it at that, except Pokémon - which is aimed at a much younger/more general audience - has no problem with professors, gym leaders, elite four members, and general "good guy" authority figures being old, ugly, or just nonstandard.

In some of the newer games, I'm starting to sense something of a rut with these Barbies, too. It feels like they're kind of trying to go self-aware with it, with characters like Charlotte existing and poking fun at the beauty = good ideology. Yet in the same vein, the arguable """""""canon wife""""""" girls in Awakening and Fates are still Sumia and Azura, who have gotten more than enough flack for adding nothing new to the trope from what I've seen. (Again, I wish I could talk about Echoes here too, but oh well. It's not like Awakening and Fates have become obsolete just yet.)

    Spoiler

I almost wanna have a thread in Creative or something for drafting out ideas & characters who break tropes and subvert pet peeves. Would anyone drop in if I made something like that? Like a chill "let's play wish fulfillment and doodle some ideas" thread?

The only offensive thing about this post is the fact that it's really hard to read on Night Forest.

This could be expanded to attractiveness/body types in general.  How many plain/ugly people are recruitable in FE?  What about the bosses? Especially the non-sympathetic ones.  It's something that's annoyed me for the longest time.

Right!! I specifically only mentioned lady peggos because that's such a common archetype and I was already talking about it, but for sure it covers most of the overall cast. The Lords in particular have it bad, too. They come in three flavors: "Twink", "Hector", and "Girlfriend", and all of them are young, hot, and wholesome. I think a Lord on the older end of things (and I mean actually older, not Sigurd "old" lmao) would be a neat twist, for instance. Sure, they have to be appealing to sell the game, but they can be appealing in lots of different ways. Or, barring that, I would still like for the next avatar, if we get another one, to have a skin tone slider and/or the ability to have a beefier body type than "high school soccer player" (thanks for being a sign of progress once again, Corrin.)

20 minutes ago, Von Ithipathachai said:

Gonzalez and Arden are literally the only "ugly" recruitable characters that I can think of.

Aw, I love Gonzalez! Benny comes to mind too, but then, I never even found him ugly - his design is actually pretty cool imo. The game just tells you he's ugly for some reason.

There's also Devdanveddvenavdann but um, I'm not sure if he was intended to be ugly, or if he's just off-model? His spray tan is a little silly but he isn't that bad either.

I really enjoy all of the above characters, haha. They're memorable in a different way. I guess that says something, doesn't it?

  13. 5 minutes ago, CriticalMiss said:

@Chad Radwell I second your wish for future games as I also feel FE has done very poorly in that regard.

Right!! Just once I'd like them to shake it up a bit and have the main gal/love interest be bigger, tougher and less designed to appeal to traditional waifu qualities, just to see how it goes. We almost got a secondary one with Scarlet/Ryoma...and then she died. Sigh.

  14. Uhhhhh this one might start fights so I'm gonna put it under a spoiler. If you don't wanna see me getting semi-emotional about the portrayal of women then don't open this lmao

    Spoiler

Okay, I have another one that's like, semi-related to what I said about fragile feminine peggos in the other thread about overused tropes: I think the reason that bothers me so much is because I'm super tired of the fetishization of pure innocent maidens that's so prevalent in JRPG culture, Fire Emblem included. It's alienating, as a girl who's pretty rough around the edges IRL, to be given characters like that time after time and told that women who lean more masculine, or stray away from shy housewaifu traits, or even just have a physically larger frame, are less "pure" and therefore less beautiful/worthy of leading roles. (And it makes me sad to see this reinforced by parts of the fandom, too. I get not liking Camilla as a character; there's a lot you can pick on to dislike about her. I don't get giving her shit for her body type or implying that her boobs are what make her bad, because I look like that, lmao.)

And honestly, this was a totally subconscious thing with me until Awakening, because Sully was the first character I saw in these games who made me actually stop and think about it. Yes, there were obviously characters who weren't all teeny waifs before that point, but Sully was the most accessible and it was super fun to get to know her in game. She's like me! I haven't played Echoes yet, so it's disappointing to look at Fates as the most recent game (in my mind) and see it still doing this shit with Azura, acting like she's the best girl for being graceful and thin and feminine and frail and...not much other than that.

Let it be known that I'm not pulling a Sarkeesian on you guys or anything; no one is in the wrong for liking these characters, OBVIOUSLLYYYYYYY. I even like a fair amount of them. Personal preference, and the fact that this is an unpopular opinions thread, just makes me RRRREALLY want to see more cool butch women in important roles. (Hinoka is kind of disappointing because she's such a bipolar, volatile disaster with little consistency in characterization between paths, but that's for another day.)

Please don't shit down my throat for saying this, loool.
