You really need to know the mechanics to make the characters roflstomp things. As much as I may like FFII, the stat stuff makes very little sense. Deist was the big wake-up call that shields are very helpful.

Things get extremely easy once you get Ricard back. Just stay in the Not-Jade Passage for a bit. Aside from stuff like Glasya Lobolas, you should be able to handle the enemies there.
